user reviews of the Uplands Bar and Brasserie, East Dulwich

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This pub is now called The Actress.

It's bright and airy inside and decorated in a modern bar fashion.

3.90 for a pint of Symonds Cider, which tastes pretty much like Wrongbow.

This part of South East London is getting very expensive for Cider drinkers.

i think you are slightly out of your depth as i am writing once again - one of the crappy regulars are we ??

touched a raw nerve did i ?! when you can write something of vague interest , write it
mikeh1 - 27 Jul 2009 21:07
A snob you maybe and good luck to you but you certainly cant write.

jilly50 you really should stay in sidcup...

this pub is rubbish and full of knarly chav types in the whole. A bit mean but its the reality . I may sound a bit of a snob, but hey -maybe I am !!!

i think barton inns the freeholders should be ashamed and sell it on .

They could move all the punters to the castle as i am sure they'd all feel at home !

My God , what has happened here?? , One of the first in the area to be bar/brasserie not its one of the first to go back to being a dump. I was taking some friends of a tour of some of my old pubs , they have seen photos of this place and couldnt believe it was the same place, all the work that was put in by myself , Louise (assistant manger for 1st 2 years as a bar), Janicke, Mari, Maija, john and others is all down the drain. very sad , we had some great times , lovely customers, and a very nice pub... all gone now..... very sad.... beer lines were in desperate need of clean by the way......

What a truly dreadful place! I would describe it as Spartan, except that Spartan can be synonomous with clean. Which this isn't. Agaisnt my better judgement, a friend and I did order food, simple lunchtime snacks.
A plate of Nachos, and as they call it "steak heaven"

Well.

Doritos welded with cheese, insipid salsa, sour cream that if churned for five minutes would produce Wedneslydale. umm.
The "Steak Heaven" wasn't at all bad, except for the minor mishap of the steak being roast lamb, presumably from sunday. This was Wednesday.

I'm not a food snob at all, but I do expect the food I order to be from the species I specify.

Avoid.

Not the friendliest of pubs, the bar staff rarely understand what you are asking them.
The music quiz is good fun but pretty impossible, it's not a very welcoming pub.
Needs to do something to sharpen up, its in a great location.

It is really hard for some pubs to shake off the mysterious thing that makes them really grim and terrible. No matter how much they might try to turn themself into a 'bar brasserie' (or whatever) they just end up being nasty and scuzzy 3 minutes down the line. Someone else will come along and try to re-theme this place now that this area is so trendy - but it will be doomed to failure.

I used to go here regularly. Since Miray (the Fench Manager ) left it has gone steadily down hill. Last Time I went with a friend they started putting chairs on all the Tables around us at 10.30 (friendly!) And my last meal there - a breakfast was the worst I have ever had. Cold Baked Beans. Toast only toasted on one side and over cooked fried eggs. Shame as it was great!

Paid my first visit here in almost a year and was amazed at how badly it has gone downhill. At 7pm yesterday, there was no ale (real or otherwise), no Guinness and no cider on. (Kroney was the only draught available!!!)The reason all the ales were off is that none of the staff knew how to change the barrel!!

Popped in Saturday lunch time for a drink & a meal. It was nice and clean, and a fair choice of beers, plus the food was good.
The only thing that let it down was the place was full of 3 wheeled buggys and the noisey kids that go with them.

New manager has brought back the great food and service with her, changed the music and has kicked out the bums! A joy to go to now after a bad few years.

Argh. Used to be nice a few years back with a fun atmosphere, but it's simply awful now. Avoid.

Nice airy boozer with a slight european feel most of the time (if you ignore the alchies in the corner). Really good food. Nice influx of late drinkers after 11pm on the weekend.

Shame to read recent comments about this place , i am the kiwi manager refered to in previous message. Shame how things change when you move on , not surprised to hear the local low life back in, they must be running out of pubs in dulwich.
kiwiphil - 21 Sep 2005 18:42
Used to like it a lot but for the last few months has gone downhill. The staff seem very uncaring. Food was sitting at the counter for 10 minutes with the staff walking pass it without taking any notice. There is also a rather loud and drunken local lot who dominate a lot of the bar. Restaurant area looks like a Little Chef with horrible chairs. Outside area is nice but bins are right there and often overflow with rubbish. Suggest they build a fence around it. Decent wine and beer but snacks are limited. Has still potential but must have urgent rethink.

A few years ago this pub was run by a kiwi bloke who believed in good honest cooking at honest prices. Sadly since then it has just gone downhill. Where their used to be homemade burgers there are now grey cheap "economy" burgers. Havent been there for about a year and a half as a result. Also way too many kids and a large part that resembles more of a Motorway Serive station restaurant than a pub.
Shame too, about the gruesome crew that inhabit the far right side of the bar!
brittste - 23 Feb 2005 12:08
The food is really awful and over priced. It was very bland and tastless, i think i remember my school dinners being tastier than that!! We were also grossly overcharged for drinks, which we brought to the manageress's attention, but all she could do was apologise, there was no offer of a refund. We would not visit again which is a shame as it is our local!!
ashbyc - 21 Feb 2005 17:02
This pub is so so dull i wasn't gonna bother writing anything about it. however it's beer n wine selection isn't too bad.
anonymous - 25 Jan 2005 18:49
All right, not the best in the area though. Ok for one or two, but i suggest to move on after that..
Mrs_Kermit - 27 Nov 2004 18:49
Its a great social place, good wine and food.
Suzi - 29 Sep 2004 17:37
7.5/10, good pub grub.
Carly - 29 Sep 2004 17:36
The French lady (owner) is very friendly and makes you feel at home.
The bagettes are very good. I just wish they still had the mozerella and tomatoe one on their menu.
Katie - 29 Sep 2004 17:34
awful, awful food, everything is very overpriced and there is no atmosphere to speak of, not a good pub.
london punter - 19 Sep 2004 15:01
Had breakfast there twice, both times cold eggs and sausages.
Patty sign on door saying things like 'foootball shirts are for a football pitch, baseball caps are for a baseball diamond' (add own nasally whining voice here).
Still the beer is fine and there's a beer garden of sorts, but service perfunctory
piersy - 7 Sep 2004 17:18
The food is at best OK, serves less than ok but the beer is cold and there is a bit of outside space. 5/10
