Under new management but same old story keeps running out of beer, prices are highest in Sutton, time someone took on this pub who cares and wants to make it a long term project
kgb - 5 May 2018 23:05
New to the area and called by the plough with my old man last friday. The pub is full of regulars and has a proper community feel. As is previously stated the locals are friendly and we were made to feel welcome. There wasn't much in the way of real ales which was only disappointment so made do with the lager. At one point 1 lass she must have been in her twenties entered the bar in a dressing gown which was surreal for given it was 10.30pm but she was given short shrifit by one of the regulars who told her to go home and get changed or not bother coming in. Regarding the decor I am sure Orwell would have approved of the no frills look, the characters and atmospheric feel. Will defo call by again.

When I'm not putting my weeks wages in the jukebox dancing around like a bafoon you can catch me locking lips with the saucy treacle behind the bar Trisha she's not much to look at but she's kind hearted.Don't be alarmed by the chef he may look like a nonce but he makes a mean bit of grub .overall a great drinking establishment full of charismatic down to earth characters pisses all over rival pub the gander which is run by a pair of rug munchers who have no conception of what a pub should be run like !!
TrishasASort - 25 Jan 2015 23:49
If you have a silver spoon up your Gary or expect a locals pub to be like the ritz hotel it is probably not the gaff for you. But if you enjoy a decent beer and a friendly atmosphere then come down to the Plough. In seven years I have hardly seen a row in there and the people that are slating this pub have obviously never been in there on a Friday night where mr deacon is being the legend he is. By far the best local b

The best boozer about! Full of geezers with lots of banter, a good mix of people as well, could always do with some more birds so if your between 18-30 and Atleast a 4/10 come in and have a drink with us.
If you miss behave in this pub you don't get barred you get a slap, there's no school like old school. This is a one of a kind pub- truely magical place! And you've gotta experience it! Pool tables 2nd to none lovely beer garden. Lovely all round. Live entertainments the nuts and there's a naughty Chinese next door. Quiz night on a Thursday! And the best baby guiness you've ever had! So come on down. Yours truely the local drunk

If ever a pub deserved to be bulldozed to make way for a Tesco Express then it's this place. Truly awful. The punters wouldn't know what a good pub is if it bit them on the backside. The same could be said for those who run this shambles of a boozer. Real ale lovers will have a better chance of finding a decent pint in the middle of the Sahara. I had to resort to ordering a pint of Stella and even then I was told it wasn't on draught and had to drink two bottles of the fizzy stuff. Terrible beyond words. It pains me to say it, but this has been a pub in decline for too long. Close it down.
theinnspectre.com - 4 Oct 2014 20:18
Interesting to read postings from people who have never stepped into this pub posting comments with a Zero rating.

I have used this pub for 18 years, If you want to know about the pub come down and see for yourself but here is a quick discription

Typical out of town locals pub with beer garden, 2 Dart boards.pool table and Juke box.

Entertainment QuiZ night,Bingo.Live singers and Disco nights.

Locals are freindly and dont bite Away supporters for football matchs always welcome.

As with everthing in life you get out what you put in, if your looking for a gastro pub or a country pub this is not for you but if you enjoy a good locals pub then come on in

Me too

Dear oh dear oh dear. One of the most blatant examples of puffery I have ever seen. I have given 'you' a rating of zero to try to counteract the tens you have undoubtedly awarded yourself.
philanders - 14 Jan 2014 18:31
Lots of entertainment for all ages. They have a Quiz Night & A Bingo Night, regular Saturday night entertainment to. Went to their Country & Western Night and must say had so much fun, pub was packed but staff handled it well and the pints of Guinness were great :) quiz night is a good laugh and they also have a Tuesday poker night which I also attend :)
HunkiH93 - 14 Jan 2014 15:46
Gotta Say I Herd They Have A New Entertainment manager who put's on a lot of good stuff. when I went in they had lots of posters of upcoming events, stuff for all ages e.g poker, quiz nights, bingo, Saturday night entertainment. went to their Country & Western Night haven't had that much fun in ages wow what a laugh. Staff were friendly, beer was good, prices were fair, have been back since and I like it :)
suzuki1964 - 14 Jan 2014 15:40
Great atmosphere, family friendly, people friendly, staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, the owner and his partner are very friendly, the beer is tasteful, there is plenty of selection of draft and bottle, two types of real ale and plenty of selection of bottled ales, plenty of entertainment during the week and weekend, lovely sized beer garden for the families to use during the summer months, I have noticed that there are two dart boards and a pool table. I will definitely be coming back here again as I thoroughly enjoyed my time here
suzuki1964 - 14 Jan 2014 15:29
Went in here on a Saturday daytime and the Youngs bitter was only just about usefull for your chips. The worst i have tasted in a long time.
rpf1955 - 12 Jun 2011 10:23
full of crap people. & crap beer
obviously the owners /guvnors are happy to let people constanly swear wont be goin back never again.
rogcs47 - 10 Jul 2010 18:37
i liked this pub. seemed very quiet for a saturday night, which was worrying but pool table, darts board, dodgy 80's carpet add to the charm. exterior as of 70's, interior 80's. contrary to report below youngs was very good. hope they can carry on!
richieboyo - 23 Feb 2010 20:16
Reargunner, how do you like your beef? Rare by the sounds of it.

If you like your folk music with a touch of racism, brian (landlord) is your man.

I challenge you to find a pub you have been to which is as bad as this place.

SurreySprite - 18 Oct 2009 13:11
Well what can i say.................

possibly the best pub in the world fact!!!!!!!!!!!

a palce where beer is served as beer a fresh rewarding pint after the long slog up the hill, if you like gunners ale (especially rear) then this is the place to go.

The last person must be anti rear gunner, he must be stupid or not have a socail life i bet he is a chelsea fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!
reargunner1 - 18 Oct 2009 12:55
Well what can i say....possibly the worst pub i have ever been to.

The Youngs resembled a tacky holiday gift with lots of sedemnt floating in it. The fosters smelt of yellow human water so had to resort to a bottle of carling and then left.

If you're going to watch the football across the road, use the bar in there as it's alot better and you won't get stared at like you're from outer space.
SurreySprite - 12 Oct 2009 12:20
The zone is nice and safe, the food is very good. Friendly staff. The manager is a nice man and very funny. The food is lovely. I recommend this pub. You can celebrate here your birthday or the birthday of the child. There is a very good chef. The cake is so delicious.
geo38 - 19 Sep 2009 20:25
All in all this is a brilliant pub.
Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere. Great live music every saturday.
Would really reccomend this pub to anybody, any age.
Tottally disagree with makeminelarge1 . By the looks of all his other comments he had a day where he must have been very bored as he has commented on a huge amount of pubs and given all bad reviews within minutes of eachother.
Either this person is just very hard to please, or clearly has not got a life.

Beer_lady_08 - 18 Sep 2009 09:50
Does anyone remember Johnny Mitchell that used to drink in this pub? What a legend. RIP.
NJJ - 21 Jun 2009 02:03
over the year has had some good live music, also a dj who plays some of the most awsome music and gets everybody dancing i think his name is brian...keep on rockin'
liquidgold - 8 Apr 2009 09:24
went to meet a friend last month ,if u want to listen to the manager talking shit to the customers then go and listen , customers are rough same sort of customers you get in the sydney ,the customers like to be heard and the swearing is nice for the children that are running around this pub should have been put on a council estate
makeminealarge1 - 12 Mar 2009 11:58
I've been going to this pub for at least 7 years now on and off, I'm not a local but have family in the area. The pub staff and its locals have always been friendly towards me, never seen any trouble occasionally some who have wandered in and had too much to drink have been politely asked to leave as is required by law. Always been served quickly. Every pub must have a bad day when things kick off but I've never seen this happen in the Plough. It may have but I have not seen it. This pub is a good clean friendly pub with nice locals and good bar staff.
Scorpio1994 - 13 Sep 2008 15:02
On par with the Sydney arms in Collingwood road.... an armpit of Sutton
MrKennedy - 23 May 2008 11:20
I went in there recently and was pleased with the way I was treated, as a girl on my own some places dont make you feel welcome, staff and customers were very freindly and the outside decking is great. Will go in with my friends another night.
anonymous - 8 Aug 2007 19:56
this will be my last comment on this page as i have the understanding that my opinion is upsetting some people so to avoid arguments and hard feelings ill just leave it. i belive that the pub is well run and the staff and customers are lovlyey ppl i apologies if i have offended andybody

bye for now

lil_landlady - 12 Jan 2007 10:13
well who ever seems to think that i eat my dinner behind the bar is wrong for a start, so get your facts right and the only time i'm on my phone is when wayne aka the boss calls me and you said to anonymous no to single people out then how come you single me out
paulploughbarstaff - 11 Jan 2007 17:59
i don't think i mentioned any names in regard to talking on the phone while serving ?

it's wrong - simple as that.ask anybody with a modicum of sense.
anonymous - 9 Jan 2007 15:32
so just hayley being picked on here is it?

matt is brilliant i agree but new at the hole thing and hayley could serve you a drink blind folded walking on her hands in the time it would take matt to do a round no offense to im he is good but still learning

paul eats his dinner checks his phone just the same as hayley behind the bar probably doesnt talk for so long

but he does it on occasion sending a text or a little fhone call here and there
so dont nit pick
and how do you know who she is talking to maybe its pub related she is the manager so i thinkit is acceptable when nessaserry for her to be working behind the bar and making calls as the manager dont you?

i dont think you are being very fair picking and choosing favroites and deciding you dont like the new manager

you all bitched abou paula to hayley and now you are bitching about hayley to the nw staff

see a pattern? you liked her befor she ran the pub ...worked all hours of the day and early morning to keep the pub going but she still has to look perfect and smile evry second of the day i have said it once and ill say it again give her a break
lil_landlady - 9 Jan 2007 10:23
i don't want any special treatment i just don't want to be served by someone who is talking on a mobile phone.it's rude and ignorant.

the two lads who work in their on Sunday night are both brilliant.Paul and Matt i think ?
anonymous - 8 Jan 2007 19:31
and just a little add on to my previous comment ... no one under the age of 18 drinks in this pub you look under 21 you are going to get i.d checked

so the comment as to wether half of the staff and customers belong in sutton in the "younger peoples watering holes" is rubbish and just because some one is 18 20 22 doesnt make them to young to be in this pub any one is welcome
lil_landlady - 8 Jan 2007 09:20
well all that can be said is at the end of the day you dont like it leave..we have heard on a number of occasions the servise is shit you are all shit well go elsewhere the business is booming and you dont like the fact that you are no longer being given special treatment having some one sat next to you bitching all through there shift...you dont like unfamiliar faces and you dont like change...

so drink your youngs or jhon smiths as i gues that is what you drink and get on with it ..thw worlds changing and i dont think it would kill you to try and be nice once in a while

cheers
lil_landlady - 8 Jan 2007 09:11
this pub has its little old foggies corner but they are harmless and on occasion funny as anything.

it's FOGEYS and by the way a lot of them have been drinking in there for 30 years plus and are now being patronised by youngsters who should probably be in Sutton where there are loads of watering holes for younger people.

in any other job you would get the sack if you served customers while talking on a mobile phone or eating your dinner.

it also seems to have turned into a club for the staff and their mates.hardly anyone seems capable of working a few hours without their mates talking to them at the bar.

anonymous - 5 Jan 2007 17:01
this pub has made a massive turn around brining in old and new customers and making it a nice enviroment to drink in...
not going to lie to you catch this pub on a once in a blue moon quiet night and you would think its a bit of old fogggys joint. but any other day of the week this place is teeming with brilliant locals and brilliant staff.

all the staff are local guys and dead nice..special mention to Matt and Hayley...they are brill

And while im mentioning staff.. cut hayley some slack she is running this pub and has been for near to 4 months now so if some times she looks a bit tierd or doesnt smile as BRIGHT as always its only because she was in the pub at 3am making sure all is stocked and clean for you guys.

this pub has its little old foggies corner but they are harmless and on occasion funny as anything.

Lovly local pub lovly local people but just because your not local doesnt mean your not welcome come down for a drink with Wayne the landlord dimond bloke cant fault him
all in all Great Pub For a GREAT night out
lil_landlady - 5 Jan 2007 09:27
mobile phone using barstaff are now available on Saturday nights as well !
anonymous - 17 Dec 2006 19:44
if you want a noisy night out when you can't hear yourself think go in there on Sunday.
if you want to be served by someone constantly talking on a mobile phone while serving you the most expensive beer in the area Monday is the night for you.
eddie59 - 12 Dec 2006 11:46
Great news have lots of cofidence in the new team who I know want to make the Plough a place to enjoy and have fun, Will be back as soon as they take over even more as i'm missing my fav barmaid the very sexy Hayley who brings even the most dimley lit room to life.

Lets make sure everyone comes back spread the word.

kgb - 4 Sep 2006 16:42
WATCH THIS SPACE!! this pub is about to get back to how it used to be and a far lot better too!! the new owners are great and have exciting ideas that will see this pub turn around very quickly.
The sky will be back on straight away, aswel as the entertainment and food is being introduced almost immediately (traditional english pub food, with early morning cafe!)
The opening night is as far i know... on the 18th september so hopefully we will see EVERYONE down there showing support for the new landlord and landlady!!
bestbarmaidever - 4 Sep 2006 12:37
hi does anybody know which brewery owns this pub thanks
sharondunne06 - 17 Jul 2006 18:23
this pub has completly lost the plot now most of the locals now drinking elsewhere so if you want to drink in a pub with no customers this is your place
kgb - 19 Jun 2006 17:14

March and things improving again
Live music back on March 18th and all through April on Sat nights
Some bar food available 12-3 (burgers, hot dogs and some rolls)

kgb - 14 Mar 2006 16:33
spoke too soon
The people who took over the food have gone thank god it was over priced and not very good kitchen is currently closed and we await someone else to take over.
Music on sat night has been stopped, the juke box is stuck on playing songs to commit suicide to and makes you want to slip into a coma.
Staff still ok but its been very quiet jan-feb and the winter blues are slipping in.
Friday afternoon and early everning still the most busy times but to be honest the best days seem behind this pub the initial feel good factor from the new management has sliped and needs a boost.
More effort needed this could be a great pub but it wont happen overnight and needs to have that wow factor to bring back the great people who used to drink here.
kgb - 24 Feb 2006 15:55
This pub is totally turned round all the staff are great now always smiling and good for a laugh, music on sat nights, food back on fun nights and more, All this and Haleys Smile what more could you ask for.
kgb - 14 Jan 2006 16:20
Much improvement in this pub been given a good clean and a lick of paint, Got some good staff now all the barmaids are top rate and a good laugh male staff not so good and dont really fit in.
Food is very good quality and value for money
Still a lot of old regulars staying away but with winter comming they might not be so keen to walk so far.
Desperatly need some sat night entertainment and have heard this is comming.
Congratulations Paula keep smiling and keep the improvements going on.
kgb - 16 Oct 2005 06:11
This pub has turned itself around 100% theh new landlandy is amazing such a laugh! Food is back on Traditional english food which is top class. also doing cheap shots and cocktails now!! the whole place has been totaly revamped including the toilets! Still needs some live entertainment but the landlady assured me it was coming.
anonymous - 13 Oct 2005 19:06
ok its been a week now so here's an update on pub now new management is settled in. Kids are allowed in until 7pm, all but one of old staff have left and the new staff are still finding their feet, but there seems to be a mix of experienced staff and some very young ones who havn't got a clue what a bar is and stand around doing nothing as if the bar is a cat walk.
Still no food available and the lack of sat night entertainment is showing in the number of visitors.
The pub is trying to be something it is not although its hard to see what it is trying to be as it is a mix of idears with not one idear coming on top and most of the locals have voted with their feet and have found other pubs.
I think this pub will get better with time and the new gov is learning all the time and seems to want to improve the pub so lets see where we are in a few months time.

kgb - 4 Sep 2005 19:09
Under new management as from 22/8/05 first steps have been to ban dogs and children so I guess they will not be looking to run a family pub any more. Also the good thai food has been stopped and at present there is no food at all.
Too early to tell if there will be any improvement to this pub which it badly needs as it is tatty and dirty the toilets are a mess and the decoration is tired.
The locals in this pub are a great bunch if somewhat noisy at times and deserve better than this pub has offered for a long time so lets hope we see some improvement.
kgb - 25 Aug 2005 05:38
i used to live nearby and only visited it on a handful of occasions. It was a reasonable pub, friendly enough, but there was something lacking that I couldn't quite put my finger on. You couldn't say it was a crap pub, but it is far from memorable. Sorry.
Mark - 25 Oct 2004 20:24
Seems to be some mistaken identity this plough is not and never has been a harvester that pub is in other side of sutton this pub is a nice locals pub with good thai food, live music on sat, happy staff and good gov
alex - 11 Oct 2004 20:44
No longer a pub - it's a resturant that happens to have a bar. Service slow and beers are far from fantastic. Garden great if you like inhaling diesel fumes from the sdjacent Sutton by-pass
Leslie - 25 Sep 2004 08:50
It's not a hatvester, but they do serve excellent thai food, still a great ilttle pub.
Dave - 17 May 2004 12:13
Now a Harvester and in common with all such places, totally devoid of atmosphere.

Richard - 7 Apr 2004 11:43
GORGEOUS BARMAIDS VERY FRIENDLY SPECIALY HAYLEY!! GOOD BEER GOOD VENUE! COME AND VISIT
BEN - 1 Dec 2003 10:44
Evil place. Rude staff, terrible beer, full of nasty individuals spouting racist nonsense. Wouldnt be surprised if they held NF meetings here. Avoid at all costs.
Paul - 3 Oct 2003 02:17
wicked ...guiness.......band nearly every night ,need to check
