The Hackney Brewery New Zealand Pale Ale currently on offer is excellent. Replacing the equally excellent Hackney Brewery Golden Ale. Really well kept cellar.

Enjoyed a couple of excellent pints of Dark Star Hophead on Sunday, surrounded by the boisterious supporters of the boat race teams, all good spirited.

Regarding the seating arrangements, while it is primarily a food pub I never have a problem getting a seat. Of course when the summer eventually arrives it is always a pleasure to sit outside.

Foodie-type pub in the backstreets of Barnes. All tables were laid out for food, which makes drinking uncomfortable unless you sit at the bar or by the window. Only one other table was occupied on my visit. Service was friendly. Beers on were Mad Goose & Wandle. The cider was Stowford Press. The interior is fairly nice. But it would be far more welcoming if at least some of the tables were set aside for drinkers.

If you charge high prices, you must try harder.

I have been in couple of times during the day in the last few weeks. Pleasant pub, nicely tucked away, with friendly staff. Not a bad drop of Twickenham.

Not sure what it might be like at weekends and in the evenings. Obviously set up to meet the demands of eating, rather than drinking, clients.

Took the hound there today for Sunday lunch with The Blonde.

Down side first - service was a little too brisk for my liking. All be it very polite and welcoming.

Up side - Obviously very dog friendly - i think i counted 5 including mine there. Everyone kept them under control and there were no problems. Small children seem to be the noisiest there . Had the Roast Beef which was an excellent cut of sirloin and nice and rare. Had a pint of Twickenham with it which was pleasant without being memorably good/bad.

Convivial place to go for Sunday lunch after a good long walk in Richmond Park - not sure i would go any other time though.

Excellent gastropub. There's just about enough separation for me between the drinking area and the eating area, so good place for a session or a meal. Top quality food - agreed it's not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Friendly, warm feel with top staff. Never seen the brown dog although I am assured it exists! Beers not to my liking, although they are from local breweries which is a plus point.

Glad I made it here, word of warning it's not easy to find. Cracking little gastro, run by clever people, bit on the expensive side, just about get's away with it. Begs the question though, Is it really good, or have I missed something obvious??

This is more of a bistro than a pub and I felt like I had been transported to Paris when the French music CD went on. I found the governor to be friendly enough and the people eating seemed to be having a good time.

Westerhams Grass Hopper and Sambrooks Wandle were the two ales on during my visit. The Grass Hopper was excellent and the Wandle was a little fruity for my liking, but maybe thats more to do with my palate. The ale was 1.70 for a half so Im not sure what sort of price the premium lagers were selling for. Most of the floor space is set up for dining, but there are a couple of stools at the bar and some more seating in the garden out the back.

If I was a dog I would want my owner to take me in here as there are doggy treats for sale behind the bar and hopefully the pigs ears werent for human consumption. There are also photos of all the regular dog visitors along with their names spread up the arch that separates the main dining area from the bar.

I like a more traditional pub so I doubt that Ill return, but I wouldnt mind popping back to sample the food.

A funny place this is, a little bit pub and a lot cafe/bar. Lots of tables set for meals, white linen etc, but still ok for a pint. A bit like a Cafe Rouge, TBH. A Sunday afternoon venue for the local yuppies I reckon, papers, books and board games are there. Hepworth Sussex...lazily poured on high, and Sharps Doombar on HP. Beer just acceptable but slightly hazy.

This is an unusually good pub. The beer is kept very well and to call the food "gastropub" food is an insult. The food is simple, fresh, seasonal and the menu changes frequently. It would not be out of place in a more expensive bistro or restraunt. The service is superb. My personal highlight is the bread, which is made fresh and is out of this world. There are cheaper places but it's a first rate venue in a wealthy part of west london, you can't expect them to give the food away. I think it's good value.

A real find! Small and cosy with a buzzy atmosphere. Sunday lunch was fantastic. Friendly welcome and service with a smile. Can't comprehend previous comments of rudeness... people aren't rude without reason! Would definitely return.
mbjc - 24 Feb 2008 15:48
It hurts me to see this pub so busy! The staff are rude, the badly executed "gastro" food sucks, and the prices are exhorbitant. Too many people in Barnes have more money than sense!
monkeyjungle - 9 Feb 2008 21:04
What a wonderful pub! Excellent food, wine, ambience and value for money - and dog friendly too! Go along and give it a try. We will be back very soon.

Unbelievably different to anything that went before on the site. Great pub, great food, good - if small - selection of real ale: usually Pride, often some Hopback as well. Have never been there when it's been less than completely full; a very good addition to the area.
swchairman - 27 Jan 2008 20:36
Serves possibly the best steak in South London and a decent pint of London Pride (difficult to find on this side of the river) Highly recommended

Nice pub, friendly locals including George Best's ex wife
anonymous - 23 Sep 2007 14:55
A gastropub indeed, quite a nice addition to the local scene for local dining.
ludovic - 18 Sep 2007 15:28
This is not a great pub at all. Main reason is that the manager is arrogant and rude. They need to be friendly to the locals and remember these are the people who pay their wages.
anonymous - 2 Sep 2007 12:51
This is now called The Brown Dog . More of eating house than a pub. Quite pleasant but expensive.
anonymous - 17 Jun 2007 14:48
sorry now called the Brown Dog
jq699108 - 19 Dec 2006 23:01
re-opened last week, now called the Rose, excellent refurb, serving good food and good beers

Pete and Andy have sadly sold up, the pub is currently closed for refurb and will do food when it opens under new ownership. Hurray!

sharkbite - 29 Aug 2006 13:04
A lovely little pub. Great for a quiet beer on a sat or sun afternoon. In fact at any time.
Staffs attitude has been a bit hit and miss in the past though.
ASHERS - 4 Jul 2006 10:02
This is an excellent pub. Yes it's more residential but the it's very inoffensive and doesn't get in your face. An excellent place to start a beered-up evening or to enjoy a quieter pint.

Since its refurb, business had picked up and it's a top spot for the current World Cup...!
Boesky - 29 Jun 2006 21:46
Came here on the Sunday evening after the Boat Race. Good vibe but beer was awful - sent it back and had two free refills.
So the service made up for the initial bad pull.
Good enough, though residential location.

anonymous - 13 Apr 2006 09:35
Great little pub. Nice range of well kept beers.
Shame there's no food though.
anonymous - 11 Feb 2006 12:26
Nice refurb. Funny sort of place to find on the backstreets of Barnes though. Visited on a Friday and it was fairly quiet - holiday season so most locals away in Tuscany/Bordeaux I expect. Good range of beers, friendly locals (including the biggest dog I have ever seen in a pub). Large TV, but somehow I doubt that this is the sort of place people go to watch the football. Probably really good when busier - must pay another visit.

Had enjoyable evening on a monday, quiz night, good mix of ages, very good humour
barbbate - 1 Aug 2005 16:27
Had a fantastic time in the pub, great place for a drink, fully recommended!
mpelmore - 4 Mar 2005 14:04
Just had an amazing new year there! What a find. It's now become my new local and by the looks of it it's the local for celbs too (just seen Ralf Little, Namone (radio 1), Martin Offiah & Anthony from Blue!!!).
l_powell - 2 Jan 2005 20:56
Went there the other night (a Sunday) - friendly atmosphere. A definite improvement on the last venture on the site.
