Popped in on a sunday lunchtime and found it friendly, clean and tidy with a good pint of guiness.Nice to see the East End on the up and moving away from it's previous reputation.

A corner pub which is larger inside than I expected.
Very busy on my visit with plenty of people enjoying a drink in the sun at the many tables and chairs outside the pub.
A good selection of beers. Sambrooks Wandle, Adnams Freewheel & Five Points Pale Ale were all sampled and found to be more than acceptable.

Superb back street pub just off Roman Road.

Has been lovingly restored and is now a trendy pub with wooden flooring throughout and nice little retro touches.

4 ales on pumps, 2 ciders, 5 ales and lagers on draught and a large choice of bottled beers.

All brewers represented were even local or within 20 miles.

I had a pint of American Pale Ale from the Hackney Brewery, a new beer and brewery on me and it was of a very high standard.

A really good quality local...get yourself in if you haven't been before or for a while.

Not a fan of this bar at all, very small, bar staff seem more focused on chatting as opposed to serving drinks (I know that Guinness is supposed to settle during pouring, but waiting 4 minutes from it being poured to being given the beer is ridiculous, especially when me and the boyfriend are the only people in the pub)

Also when it does get busy it tends to be media types/hipsters, it is also quite expensive.

Not bad at all. Brewers Gold and Sambrooks beers on draft. Food was a nice selection of pies (served with mash, and mushy peas). Tasted good.Would happily go back.

Rather groovy, dimly-lit bar with decent ale and chilled out, youthful vibe. Barman was a surly slob, mind.

An ok pub, unfortunately only had sambrooks beers on yesterday which are not my favourites. But as pubs go it wasn't bad and would visit again

Good range of well kept ales and what looked like good food in this welcoming pub. Lots of exposed dark wood. Traditional pub menu including a choise of various pies with mash and veg. As previously mentioned the background music was Trojan ska which suited me fine - maybe it's a ginger thing. :o)

to quote ginger_beard:

'What a great atmosphere, very relaxing - couples chatting, locals reading the Guardian, soft reggae music in the background before a pianist and singer beautifully performed a few easy listening classics. The Adnams Broadside was delicious. Will be going back very soon....'

WHAT A HELL HOLE

popular and decent real ale pub - bit pricey for the area though

definately one of my favourite pubs in east london, simply for the Paulaner weiss they have on, although at 4+ a pop, cant afford to have too many. defo seem like west london prices but the pies are top drawer and the staff and punters make for a good vibe.

NIce little backstreet local with a pleasant laid-back atmosphere, although on a quiet Saturday afternoon the Indie music playing in the "background" was rather loud for anyone not enamoured of the genre.

Two ales on handpump; I had Crouch Vale Brewers gold which was well kept. (The other was Harvey's Sussex Best.)

Clientele mostly postgraduate types as opposed to the dyed in the wool cockneys one might expect to find in Bethnal Green/Bow. Decor slightly quirky yet still tasteful.

Really lovely pub. Felt like the interior of a cosy rail carriage. Tables and chairs outside. Didn't try the food but smelled yummy. Efficient, friendly bartender. Good beer selection. Nice mix of clientele with some pretty decent background music - not at all intrusive but loud enough to add to the ambience. Nice little find, shall be back.

This pub is an oasis in a desert for Bethnal Green. Really nice chilled out atmosphere, good drinks selection with well kept beer and friendly staff. The pub is a bit of a strange shape - long and narrow and it can be akin to walking down a tube carriage on a busy night. There's also no light in the gents (apart from the light coming in from outside) and I always thought this was some idea of alternative trendy ambience until I realised they probably just hadn't replaced the bulb yet! I really like the decor here as well - some thought has been put into it. Although it looks modern it does have the feel of a traditional pub.

My only problem with it is they don't have a late licence so it's the old pub closing time of 11pm.

Oh and apparently some weekends they have on a yodelling banjo player, which is pretty original...

Brilliant little pub in Bethnal Green just off the detritus of Roman Road. Tiny place so get here early if you want a seat or are in a group. It was smoke-free long before that was the law. Always heaps of atmosphere, good music, friendly staff, not too pricey. A great place to while away the hours, and within staggering distance of Bethnal Green tube.
stuartw - 24 Mar 2008 17:16
Very nice alternative to the majority of London which tend to be either: Dingy Old Man Pubs, Wetherspoons or overpriced City Bars.

The Camel is very nicely decorated, friendly staff, good mix of people, low, well chosen music and great wine selection.

A real gem in the heart of Bethnal Green.

Went here last Saturday (for the fourth time). Had a few pints of Guiness to accompany my Pie and Mash. Same good standard of Food, Drink, Music and staff. They also had the papers on the bar which was a nice touch. When I'm next in town I will go back. A decent pub, worth a visit.

This is a great little find of an East End pub. I love the interior design its cool, while still at the same time being a proper, old fashion pub. The clientele reflect this - a good mix of ages and backgrounds. I go there whenever I fancy a big tasty pie for dinner - they serve good veggie ones too.

I really don't understand how anyone can say the food at this place is great. If I want to eat reheated food that's masquerading as 'homemade', I'd go to my local Tesco's and put it in my own microwave oven. At least then it might even be cooked properly!
MariaDavid40 - 3 Sep 2007 15:25
I always like this place; nice tables outside, great food, perfect for the baby since it's always been non-smoking; delicious food and friendly staff and better music than most pubs. Not so close to where we live but it's becoming our local. Give it a go...
wiiiiiiiill - 30 Aug 2007 11:48
This pub has gone downhill rapidly, it used to be my favourite local, but you'd have to pay me to eat there now - I was up all night with stomach cramps. I wouldn't dare to complain either as the service was less than friendly too.
anonymous - 14 Aug 2007 14:19
A great find this - approached from the north on a pub crawl from the famous Approach Travern, this place provides a superb link in the chain that is a very good "backstreets of Bethnal Green" tour. The atmosphere is very relaxed and there is outside seating on a street that sees little in the way of traffic.
BoehmBawerk - 30 Apr 2007 15:20
This is a really nice pub. Great place to go after visiting the Museum of Childhood - in Spring/Summer 2007 there is a Picasso exhibition there - well worth seeing. The pub obviously used to be a Boxing pub from the mug shots on the wall. I have been there twice and still not seen any children.
kpflude - 2 Apr 2007 12:31
This place is great. Go there. The food was fantastic - good pies, and the locals were relaxed and friendly.

Beautifully refurbished, non-smoking pub with good range of beers and great pies.

great new pub. small, friendly and obviously well run. the beer and cider excellent. good food (great ice cream) but just a very pleasant place to be.

mralistair - 15 Oct 2006 22:15
Quite clearly the best wallpaper in any pub ever.
This pub has great pies - with mash in the winter and salad in the summer, games to play and as I mentioned before great decor.
It is close to Bethnal Green tube and the busier Florist pub (owned by the same people). This place is perfect for chilling out with a bottle of wine, but certainly not for a party. The smoke free air is a relief, but beware the children.
ewebber - 16 Aug 2006 18:32
Youv'e mentioned orange juice and a pie, i thought this was a pub, what about the beer, or was you really in a cafe.
moncrief - 25 May 2006 12:00
The thing about Pie is you never know how good its going to be. . . When a mate suggested going to a pie place I was initially dubious partly because it meant a massive shlep for me and he lives less near (ish) by in Mile End. Met in Bethnal Green and went down to the pub and first impressions very good. Quite busy but not overly so; clean stylish furniture and an attentive barman. They do food till 9 we were told so plenty of time to peruse the ample Menu. I had Pork and Cider Pie and my mate had Lamb and Mint. (Steak and Kidney had run out boo!) all pies just under 9. Had some freshly squeezed (well, that morning) OJ which was great and the beer was nice too my friend informed me).

When the food came I was pleasantly surprised. Portions just right with Pie, Mash and Mushy Peas. The Pie crusts themselves were a little hard but I think they were supposed to be like that Im just used to softer Pies I guess. Gravy came over with a full compliment of condiments the little things really go a long way you know. Delicious overall.

Non-smoking as mentioned elsewhere which might be a pain if you smoke but nice to eat in a pub without having a fuggy cloud over you.

Jimmytwoshoes rating 8/10

JimmyTwoShoes - 24 Mar 2006 10:00
Pleasant pub, friendly staff, solid wooden bar with brass rail, 1970s lampshades, two real ales, seven or eight pies on the menu (three of them vegetarian), Poole gravy boat. When I was there a customer was served the wrong pie; the barman apologised and gave the customer a free glass of wine.
clissold345 - 22 Feb 2006 16:51
Spent lunchtime here. Menu is Pie & Mash only, but good quality pies. Will spend the next few weeks working through them all. Good wine list and and relaxed, smoke free atmosphere. Can recommend this recently opened Pub.
anonymous - 10 Jan 2006 13:02
Spent all of Sunday arvo in this recently renovated and re-opened gem in the East End. It's SMOKE FREE so blissful and the pie selection was outstanding. Friendly staff, clean loos, nice interior. Will definitely be back! Only bummer was the music (a Tracey Chapman CD) but maybe they'll accept compilations from punters?
anonymous - 13 Dec 2005 15:32
It opened last night!
dhandforth - 28 Nov 2005 15:15
I have just heard from one of the barmen at florist that the leaseholder of the florist has bought it and has just ahd permission granted to turn it into a bar/restaurant. Apparently it will be pie and mash themed! great news as the east end could do with a few pie and mash shops and also great news because the camel is a great little building.
samgordon - 10 Nov 2005 10:00
Looks like the new owners are now doing up the pub and it should re-open shortly. Will let you know what it's like as it's at the end of my street.
gary_arry - 7 Nov 2005 13:16
If anyone's interested, the owners are looking to dispose of their interest in the pub. The planners at LBTH suggest the building has no architectural merit whatsoever, BUT they did turn down a planning app to demolish it, saying that for cultural reasons, they want to see it brought back into use, and that this particular little bit of Bethnal Green won't be subject to anonymous bland housing developments. Maybe the owners of the Florist might want to buy it...?!
mikegray - 6 Jul 2005 14:32
I was gutted when they shut this down. You move out of the area for 5 minutes, and it's unrecognisable when you get back. I've used this pub from school days, had many a good night there.
anonymous - 5 Nov 2004 10:58
In fact there is now planning permission being sought to demolish it and replace it with flats. A travesty since it is a lovely little building.
Nick - 25 May 2004 13:36
I'm not too sure what planet Chris is on, or whether he has his pubs mixed up. But I have lived near enough next door to this pub for nearly 3 years, and it is very shut-down.
Chris from Globe Road - 5 Nov 2003 10:14
Great little boozer and there is also seats available, a great escape from the busy Florist
