Certainly a lot of old dark wood in here. Formally dressed barstaff. Two bars & a side room. The back one reeked of food, dont go in there just for a drink. McMullens AK was OK.

The bar food is reasonable but, alas, that is as far as it goes. The beer is substandard, (and I have to admit to being passionately anti-McMullens products), and grossly overpriced. They even managed to serve me a gruesome pint of Guinness on one occasion.
But the building is stunningly beautiful, a gem in Hertford's architectural history, so a visit is worthwhile. No need to stay long, though.

Excellent little place. I ate there and the food was above average. Good service, good staff and good beer.

I have no idea why anyone that wasn't staying in the hotel would want to drink here.

Gods Waiting room with a G&T thrown in. Dark, Dingy, smells of old people, musty and depressing. Would fit into the storyline of an old agatha christie plot!

We stayed for the weekend to celebrate both my husband's and my birthday in February this year. We had a celebration meal especially for all our family for my husband as it was "special" birthday. The whole affair was brilliant. The staff, the meals all weekend and our bedroom was perfect. We would definately return.

Dull as ditchwater. This is the place for you, if you're ready to die. And while you're waiting you can pass the time watching crumblies suck beef sandwiches to pieces. Not a place for the squeamish.

Dingy and dark interior needs brightening up serving McMullens beer and coffee for the well to do ladies of town...reminds me of a trainn station waiting room.

Expensive hotel, middle class hangout and bar. Good beer, and food but the service isn't always great. Surroundings are very nice, and it's a pleasant place to relax for a quiet night out.

very good food, decent little pub, not as soul-less as many hotel bars. decent ales as far as i could see.

Not bad. Has a bit of character. But the smoke was unreal, primarily because of the low ceilings.

I whole heartedly agree with my Amigo Jake, a nice cosy pub on a bleak night.

The excellent food is very reasonably priced for the quality. The beer is overpriced. Superb non smoking room. A great range of wines by the glass and even more by the bottle.

This pub was great when I came with a mate a couple of years ago while on a summer's crawl in Hertford. The food was (in 2002) quite reasonably priced and the beer was in good condition (McMullens Ak and Country -?-) If it is still the same I will visit again when in Hertford.

A beautiful old McMullens pub/hotel serving tasty (if a little expensive) food and locally brewed beers. Very cosy on a cold Winters day.
