user reviews of the Moon and Cross, Waltham Cross

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Lots of locals exchanging banter gave this Wetherspoon's in central Waltham Cross a lively feel when I visited on Saturday, 7th May, after a walk from Walthamstow. While there didn't seem to be that many ales available (many had the dreaded 'available soon' attached to the pump clip), the Titanic Lifeboat Mild was nice.

I have visited this pub on a few occasions in the last couple of months and am pleased to say that it has raised its game somewhat. It is now a perfectly acceptable Wetherspoon's, nothing more but crucially given my previous visits, no longer anything less.
Drinks are of decent quality and as ever for this chain are very reasonably priced and there is always a good choice of drinks for almost any mood. The service is better than before both in terms of speed and friendliness. The furniture seems to have been given a slight makeover nothing drastic but at least there is some spring in it these days. Not what you'd call a destination pub, then again Waltham Cross really isn't very much of a destination, but it's perfectly acceptable for a few pints and maybe a meal. Oh and the customers are nowhere near as bad as some rumours would have you believe.

Visited at 1400h on a Sunday. Unusually for a Wetherspoons, pub NOT full of families with kids wolfing down Sunday roast, but more like a proper pub, with locals. Pint of Santa Paws in good condition. Mulled cider, advertised as a special, was "off" - they offered to put it on to heat, but as this would have taken 20 mins, we declined. Pleasant atmosphere.

Manage to visit here about once a year. I rate it as one of the better Spoons pubs.
The staff are very pleasant and the farther you enter the pub the brighter it gets.
The bill for the four of us having drinks, main meals and a couple of desserts came to 28. The average price in a 'proper' pub would have been 45. Was it worth saving 17?
The Bacon Carbonara Pasta was okay, as was the Chicken Chilli Noodles. I had the All-Day Breakfast. I suspected it might not be the best choice of meal............minutes later my suspicions were justified.
The All-Day Brunch probably means that it has been kept warm all day. The fried eggs were slightly hard and the bacon rashers tasted of plastic. If you ignore the brunch it was worth it............just.
The bar has two groups of hand-pumps of which about ten dispense real-ale. Unfortunately five had the annoying 'available soon' label showing.
And this is one of the better Spoons!!!

Called in here on a Saturday evening after a walk around the local countryside. This pub is long and narrow, and not particularly cosy. Moreover it was surprisingly empty and dead for a Saturday night. I am normally a Wetherspoon's fan but the atmosphere here was somewhat gloomy and the beer I had wasn't that well kept.

Plus points to the staff, friendly on both bar visits. Two Nethergate beers on, average condition each.

Really like this pub, have been there about a dozen times. Slight issue with the fact that they do a Sunday roast menu but if you visit after 3 that day, one option or other will prob be sold out. But it's a 'spoons, not one that does live sport either, and does exactly what it says on the tin. Gets the odd a-hole but mostly older folk like me.

This place may have 12 handpumps, but when four are four Greene King IPA... Still, its cheap and cheerful, the beer quality is fine, and you know exactly what to expect before entering.

Better than the average 'spoons with good, friendly service. Food is always good (for microwaved frozen pre-packs) and beer is kept well.

The only pub in Waltham Cross that I really frequent. Great food, decent real ales, and they cater for smokers very well with large umbrella kind of shelters and heaters outside in the courtyard garden.

Visited this pub to-day. One of the better ones in this chain. Good real ale selection. The service, both drinks and food, was quick and friendly.

Will without doubt visit again.

Breathtakingly average Wetherspoon's. It's a little bit grubbier and shows more signs of wear and tear than most pubs in this chain, but still has the good prices and range of food and drink on offer. Service is unpredictable ranging from friendly and attentive to couldn't care less but is slightly more positive than negative. Better than most of the local competition and therefore popular. Better in the daytime or on quite nights than when it's packed. Toilets are clean to the extent that they are almost preferable to drinking in the bar area, but not quite!

not a young place but definatly somewhere i would eat again. the food is pukka in this place unlike other wetherspoons. nice garden for the summer but not a place to be at the weekend.

Very decent pub offering standard Wetherspoons fare.

This pub has a fair range of patrons (skewed towards the older end of the age scale and postmen during the day) and is generally quiet and relaxed even during peak times (when it's still usually possible to grab a table).

The pub is fairly large so you don't get choked by smoke.

Nice and cheap and possibly the most friendly pub in the area.
