Seven Stars, Bristol

user reviews of the Seven Stars, Bristol

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Completely unspoiled pub - very lived in a touch shabby. Pool Table and Dart Board. Unfortunately, only two other punters in - so not much of an atmosphere. We were periodically joined by trampy looking fellas who came in just to use the facilities, to the visible annoyance of the bar staff.

Beer was good and unusual - Cheddar Ales Totty Pott Porter.

Would come back.
Mappiman - 6 Jan 2020 17:37
Please ignore my previous review - that should have been for the Three Tuns. The Seven Stars was quite a lively place quite close to the station. It was packed and a local band was in full swing, with plenty of songs about cider, which went down a treat. The ale choice was Prescott Hill Climb & Super 6, Yeovil Summerset, Plain Ales Bitter, Boss Six & Black Yeovil Stout Hearted. I know I had Ben Crossman Dry. But I believe there was probably a much larger selection. But by this point I was too drunk to care. Possibly the best pub I went to in Bristol yesterday. I certainly remember enjoying myself here. But I must endeavour to go back when much more sober.
blue_scrumpy - 5 Jun 2016 18:47
The Seven Stars was closed until 4pm yesterday, as it was close to the central riot zone and all of the police baracades. But I made the journey back here before starting my way towards the station. This is a larger pubs than it looks from the outside and has a courtyard garden. The ale range was mostly golden type beers - Vibrant Forest Vienna Rye Pale, Dorset Piddle Piddle, Arbor Motueka & Hoploader, Beerd Gambit, Black Flag El Dorado & Firebrand Graffiti IPA. Ciders were Westons Rosie's Pig & Worleys Mendip Hills. The latter cider was enjoyable. Another place offering CAMRA discounts and another good Bristol pub.
blue_scrumpy - 5 Jun 2016 18:23
Went to the pub yesterday. Only visit the pub once a year after visiting the Hi-fi show at the nearby Marriott Hotel. A great pub with an excellent selection of beer and cider. A shame I can only get to the pub once a year but well worth it. Roll on next year.
Boyne - 28 Feb 2016 18:07
Absolutely superb range of beers on our last visit, 15 in all, at their Beeriodical which is like a monthly mini beer fest. Loos need sorting.
Steamer1 - 13 Dec 2014 09:41
Like the Cornubia very hard to find but worth a look. We stopped in here before the train home and was quite lively. A selections of decent beers and a juke box.
yamyampublover - 21 Jul 2014 20:26
The position of this pub stops this being a through road.
In front of the pub is a narrow path and benches. Inside its small with a pool table and a corner set up for music. A very rough and ready pub.
8 Hand pumps on the bar all in use and you can bring your own takeaways/food in to eat. Tickety Brew-Stout £3.00 .
rpf1955 - 24 Mar 2014 14:29
The interior is a bit scruffy, but I don't think that always matters and it certainly didn't offend us. (If you want a nice sterile environment there are plenty of others to choose). I think this pub is all about the beer of which there is a grand choice of ales and what was sampled was well kept. Nice bunch of people too, although this was the first of hopefully many visits.
RGJ - 17 Mar 2013 16:06
Tucked away in backstreets but worth seeking out. More of a boys pub as bit basic inside but good range of beers. The Cheddar 'Goats Leap' was a proper 5.5% IPA and full of flavour and Stroud Bunning was very nice too. Many local breweries including a Bristol Beer Factory representative.

Quiet on a Tuesday night but weather inclement so a night for diehardy fools maybe. Friendly and knowledgable barman.

mikey64 - 22 Jan 2013 21:38
Visited for the 1st time on Saturday. Does not look anything special from the outside, but once inside it is fine. Very friendly barstaff. CAMRA discounts available to card carrying members. Good range of ales available. Visiting Blackpool football fans were enjoying the quality ales pre-match.
PoorBeerHater - 21 Nov 2012 10:39
Should be called the Temple really, best choice in town for real ale , arguably the best quality, beriodical at the beginnning of each month, good cider choice, loads of charachters , staff with a knowledge of Beer, okay the interior is a bit tat, but that gives it the advantage of keeping the suits out.
beatles38 - 21 Sep 2012 07:08
The Seven Toilets!
Wife refuses to go to the pub because of the smell.
Bugger, as the beer range is wonderful.
Keep hoping that they discover drain cleaner or bleach.
If they do let me know and we, the Royal WE, will be back for a session.
inkywebber - 10 Sep 2012 16:37
At last I have found this pub. And it's well worth finding. 8 real ales, apparently there is a monthly beer festival, and also cider and perry are well promoted. A friendly bunch of customers and good staff too. This must be one of the best in Bristol, which has plenty of good pubs anyway. An essential pub to visit on any pub crawl.
beerpilgrim - 18 Jul 2012 12:09
Great bar. Happy hour is always a good idea, great staff as well. Although I have to agree about the toilets :(
frankw5 - 16 May 2012 17:03
Visited after the recent Bristol Beer Festival, and found this to be a good place to spend an hour. It boasted several decent real ales at the bar, friendly locals and a few decent musicians who were part of an acoustic guitar evening.
It did take some finding, but persevere, we did, and it was worth it.
It's near to both the King's Head and Cornubia, and if you visit these three pubs as part of your crawl, you cannot wrong if you like real ale in real pubs.
SouthYorkshireman - 20 Mar 2012 22:43
Excellent range of quality & ales, but vile toliets. The electric water heater in the ladies is partly uncovered which is really dangerous
reynedd - 17 Feb 2012 13:25
Great range of beers for Bristol. Not far from Temple Meads. Could do with a deep clean but otherwise a nice spot for a pint.
bamberg1 - 14 Feb 2012 14:53
Great pub, one of the best in the city. Friendly staff, and an excellent range of cask ale. The music is usually great, although I have been in once when a customer put an hours worth of terrible crooning bilge on. A very mixed crowd but as it's off the beaten track, this pub doesn't seem to attract many dickheads.
LukeD - 2 Jan 2012 17:54
Geat back street pub good beer reasonable prices recommended
Jeffwc - 28 Dec 2011 20:55
The recent Beeriodical London was one of the best ever, although they are always very good. I like the fact that Beer choice is always good though, and quality remains , both of which can lapse sometimes in other contempoaries, after a Beer festival ,which is probaly one of the reasons why it has been Bristol's camra pub of the year for the last two years. The fact that you will always get a great beer in here , also means that sometmes the fact that the pub has a good choice of cider and perry is overlooked.

beatles38 - 10 Dec 2011 08:08
Eeverything you would expect from a proper CAMRA style real ale pub! Great range of beers at reasonable prices in a typical "alehouse" setting. Always something going on and a good mix of customers (although I did wonder why two couples came in and asked for 2 white wines and 2 Fosters??). Just off Victoria Street and a short walk from Temple Meads station and close to The Cornubia; Kings Head and Bridge so a nice easy pub crawl!!
mcroyal - 13 Nov 2011 12:34
A great pub. Top stuff. RCH PG Steam on tap and delicious. A local Porter too. Four others looked good but not enough time, sadly. A treat in the heart of town
inkywebber - 24 Oct 2011 13:29
Great find awindy day in Bristol. Beer selction pretty good, though not many of the 'trendy' breweries. Atmosphere excellent
bamberg1 - 22 Sep 2011 12:40
Great selection of interesting beers, all served in excellent condition from a knowledgeable bar person. What more is there to say? 10/10
Dandillus - 17 Sep 2011 17:23
"Are you a CAMRA member?" "Yes." "Discount on the beer then." "Bingo!"

Seemed to be a decent enough selection of beer, although I only had time for one.
Wilson_MacDonald - 18 Jun 2011 17:43
I have been to this excellent pub many times. It has a real friendly atmosphere, a great team behind the bar and the beer itself is great. When I first visited I drank only fosters but I found real ale later on during my stay; I should have turned to the dark side when I first got there!! I have now left Bristol but I have many a good memory from the Seven Stars. Fonejacker once told me "never look back always look fwd", well my friend this time I disagree, I look back at my times at the Seven Stars often and with a smile on my face.
Bally9001 - 25 Apr 2011 11:31
Went here during our visit yesterday and this is a place full of character AND full of characters. Marianne served us and my Ale of the pub was RCH PG Steam. I also had Dark Star Partridge whilst my friends drank cider and mild. Discounts for CAMRA members and I enjoyed the pub immensely.
dotball - 17 Apr 2011 19:05
No nonsense real ale drinkers pub , with an ever changing range of beers.
Had a festival on when i was there, think the theme was shropshire.
Bar staff who seemed to have a good knowledge of what they were talking about , especially the one who looked like a viking .
Will visit again especially as they seem to have a number of dark beers.

"Bristol & District branch Pub Of The Year 2011 results: Winner Seven Stars, Redcliffe"

Big congrats to all @ Seven Stars!
MisterX - 20 Mar 2011 10:06
Still as good as ever and an ever changing range of ales all in great condition and at great prices. A proper pub that concentrates on what a pub should, beer!
MisterX - 9 Mar 2011 21:04
Bristol CAMRA POTY 10. Good selection of beers and ciders. Jukebox was blasting out "metal" when we called in....must have been an antidote to the acoustic afternoon they had just had!!
LickeyEndBooze - 6 Mar 2011 18:14
Single room pub with horseshoe bar. Brightly lit interior, wooden floored. A jukebox that could be called eclectic, I'll just settle for plain weird (Boyzone and crappy 80s 'dance' music?)
The pub was having a Cornish ales festival on my visit. Beers on offer came from, among others, Lizard, Keltek and Driftwood. I tried Coastal Erosion, a strong old ale and Penpot Shipwreck Coast which was very fruity. I saved the best till last - Tintagel Gwaf Tan, a 5.8% porter - whch was excellent.
This is a PUB and I'll be back.
holbornboy - 22 Feb 2011 22:19
Welcoming to us 'down from London' tourists and great range of beer and cider. The Janet's Jungle Juice was in perfect condition - as good as I've ever tasted. Will go back each time we revisit Bristol.
mark555 - 5 Feb 2011 19:18
Thesasaurus out , its becoming difficult to find new words to describe how good it is .A great choice , like the fact they have one strong un on as well , beer quality great. A regional beer festival usually at the start of the month . real cider also served , like the fact the bar staff when not on duty are often found drinking this side of the bar. In Beatles talk truly fab
beatles38 - 27 Dec 2010 10:06
Well worth it's award as Bristol's CAMRA Pub of the Year ! Good range of beer, typical alehouse decor, friendly welcome and handy for the station as well. My Otter Bitter was just right for my first pint of the day and I shall recommend this place to my friends for our next trip to Bristol - another good example of a pub which a big brewer could not make a go of but which has been brought back to life (and thriving) under independent ownership.
mcroyal - 24 Nov 2010 23:08
Fabulous pub with a cracking range of ales and ciders. Always seems to be something going on (a weekend music fest when i was last there in August). There's some good pubs in Bristol and surrounds, but none touch this place.
SteveinLondon - 7 Sep 2010 11:38
if its quality of beer you want , ive never had a bad pint in here ,don't go any further
beatles38 - 6 Sep 2010 21:59
Ignore review below, that's for the Trumpet in Bilston!!
GuideDogSaint - 5 Sep 2010 15:17
Seasonal special was the Wharfinger with the usual range of Holden's being Special, Mild, Golden Glow and Black Country Bitter. Dusty jazz and music related paraphernalia all over the pub. Jazz playing every evening and Sunday lunchtimes. Not much room inside but plenty of room in the beer yard.
GuideDogSaint - 5 Sep 2010 15:15
Searched this place out whilst visiting Bristol a couple of weeks ago.
No surprise really that this is the local CAMRA branch pub of the year. 8 ales on hand pump, another three on gravity out the back along with an offering of Ciders and Perrys. Mainly regional and Micro brewery ales on which included Budding from the Stroud Brewery, Vale Ale and Cotswold Spa Old English Rose and Apricot Ale. The couple I tried were very well kept, but I think I will be sticking to brews that dont have real fruit as ingredients in the future.
Gann - 1 Sep 2010 23:04
Cracking traditional boozer. Eight real ales which yesterday were art brew monkey ipa, Chedda Gorge Best, Moor Revival and Peat Porter, Plain Inspiration, Saltaire Cheeky Kriek, Thornbridge Lord Marples and Severn Vale Blake's Severn. Real cider and perry are kept out back. Also have live music at various times. Shame we only had time for one.
GuideDogSaint - 29 Aug 2010 12:41
Beer is absolutely excellent, staff are really helpful, prices are good, it is just a great pub. Maybe not a place for a romantic date, but ideal if you want great beer, cider or perry. Hard to fault.
Dylanwing - 9 Jul 2010 22:20
stopped in here on our trip and had a couple pints, very nice pub and at 2.20 it was well worth the trip. the bartender was a pleasant young man.
shamus52 - 22 Jun 2010 21:37
Great - the boring Irish guy, aem, rarely comes in now!
dolphoxe - 15 Jun 2010 11:37
Visited again yesterday with a bunch of friends. As always the beer range and quality was excellent, prices (even without CAMRA discout) reasonable and the service great.
cheshirecat - 15 Jun 2010 08:21
beatles 38 are you that boring irish guy?? im thinking maybe you are seeing as you have the same lack of sense of humour!!
phonejacker1 - 14 Jun 2010 22:53
Steve advised me last time I visited that the new licensee, Paul, would keep the place in good order. And all evidence found last week seemed to suggest he has. Beers still varied; still kept brilliantly. Convivial, relaxed atmosphere was intact. Friendly customers and staff. No unwanted or inadvisable alterations. Simple, and still so effective.

The only slight downer was one excessively inebriated punter who my mate reckoned tried to grope his arse.... I should say that this person was male and so is my chum so that didn't go down too well, but landlords can't go handcuffing drunk and frisky gay customers so it's not the pub's fault!

Keep it up.

TWG - 9 Jun 2010 17:18
Nice to know aem is still about......but what other pub review sites are there ?
I always looked forward to his reviews as he clearly knew what he was talking about.
Blue_Moses - 8 Jun 2010 16:55
i'm sure you''ll all be pleased to know Aem is alive and well , but chooses to do his reviews on another web site these days.

Dandillus - 31 May 2010 21:28
Pleasant building just off a busy road, nice interior, live music if that's your thing (I don't think they need an amp in such a small place), good range of ales. On the downside, ale was much too cold, the outside seating area is smoky and messy, and the Fleece (large teenagers' pub next door) had some extremely loud and not very good rock music on, causing the whole neighbourhood to vibrate. I have a feeling I caught it on an off day, will give it another chance sometime if I'm in the area.
newbury_drinker - 29 May 2010 23:36
I'd be most happy to translate , when you can sort it out which name you "wanna use" ie phone jacker 1 , sussex fox , watsonworld , snarling mallard or BS8 DRINKER

pps, the blonde barman is not a tramp! some say he is directly related to jesus!! others say if you cut him he will not bleed??? some think he has a platinum primark card entitling him to free socks for life?? but all we no for sure is he is the saviour of the south west free house and he goes by the name of the moginator!!!

Sh*td*ck, P*ssm*onkey,F*ck!! sorry honestly it could improve if they removed more of the furniture! less is more i say An*l W*rts, Sp*nkF*nny,C*nt!! oops again! If you want furniture go to F**ckin DFS!! Only Drip Is the Licencee needs a haircut!! and the bogs need a refit, Hairy N*ts, wa*k Sock, Nut cracker ar*e!! 5 *****
phonejacker1 - 13 May 2010 20:12
The upside was that it had some excellent beers we hadn't encountered anywhere else, the barman invited us to tasters before we even asked and the price was a knockout 2.20 (and didn't have to flash my CAMRA card).

The down side was that there wasn't much furniture and what there was, was fairly grubby. Me and my Doris could have done without the swearing from some locals whose vocabulary seemed quite restricted....and I can swear for England. But I do object to abuse of Abuse! Now there's another campaign......
JBGatelad - 26 Apr 2010 20:33
Dropped in during a busy afternoon session complete with live music. Terrific range of beers all well kept and very agreeable!. The live music drowned out most of the whingeing around the pool table which was a blessing. The pub could be even better if the table could be dumped into the docks tout suite! All round good pub which could be one of the best for miles if brightened a little paintwise. Can't fault the beers at all!
steamraiser2 - 19 Apr 2010 14:21
Complete and absolute beer heaven. Huge range of beer of all colours, styles and tastes. 10/10 for knowledgeable staff who looked after my wifes "only drink Porter or Barley Wine" tastes. My pint of Yeovil Ruby was superb. My one slight gripe is the furniture - or lack of it - but its a standing up (whilst you still can) sort of pub.

Interested to read Articums post. I didn't disclose my membership (nor was I spotted) so missed out on any discounts offered. Better go back and try my luck albeit a long way from Essex for a short hop.

Will be back one day, promise.
twineyboy - 12 Apr 2010 22:50
The pub may not be pretty to look at but this is a top notch real ale quaffer's delight. The beers are from far and wide, some from fairly obscure micro breweries. There are usually a range of ale types, for example, tonight was an IPA, Yorkshire bitter, Stout, Mild. They were all, ALL served in tip top condition. Surely a contender for CAMRA pub of the year. Oh, hang on........ well done all around. 10/10
Dandillus - 26 Mar 2010 22:29
visited last night for a quick one and ended up going back later and had far too many, 8 hand pumps with Berrow Topsy Turvey, Yeovil Spring Forward, Stonehenge Sign of Spring, Plain Innspiration, one from Jollyboat, Arbor Hornbeam and Teignworthy reel Ale. This pub has just received Bristol CAMRA's pub of the year award and I can see why. Beers were all great. No food here mind
brewguru - 19 Mar 2010 11:43
Good pub when that sad Oirish bloke ain't in......
sussexfox - 18 Mar 2010 22:01
Numerous ales on and I unwittingly went for the Butcombe Bitter - not that this was a bad pint, in fact it was excellent just that I didn't realise that Butomcbe would be my only choice in other establishments later in the day. Probably Bristol's 'premier real ale' pub with friendly staff and clentelle. It's nice to drop in to a pub where you can converse with the locals as well as having a decent pint.
anonymous - 14 Mar 2010 09:37
During a weekend based at Temple Quay, this was definitely the best pub we found - tucked down a back street on the way to Bristol Bridge. Recent reviews are accurate, and to them I'd add splendid welcoming and friendly staff. We got in early on a Sunday evening when it was quite busy but not heaving and with a good mixed clientele. The barmaid twigged immediately to the fact that I was probably a Camra member (all too obvious maybe) and offered without prompting a discount, meaning beers ranged from 2.10-2.35 a pint. These included Severn Vale "Session", Tudor "Blorenge", Coastal "Winnie's Honey Heaven", GWB "Edwin's Ruby Porter", Kingstone "Challenger" and Arbor "Hornbeam IPA". Also a good place if you like blues-influenced classic rock. Basic but comfortable boozer with good loos.
Arctium_lappa - 5 Mar 2010 21:24
I think the fact that this pub has got so many reviews speaks for itself, so I can only really echo what others have said.
Relatively small L-shaped pub which can get packed, particularly when there's a popular gig on at the Fleece next door. A pool table at the back wastes a lot of space. This is a basic no-frills boozer, but none the worse for that. I was struggling to get to the bar, and squeezed in between two Camra types having a very animated discussion of the various beers they were sampling. One was on the second pint of his 9% Russian Stoat and kindly offered me some to try!
The beers that I noted were Bath Ales Dark Hare, Nailsworth Mayor's Bitter, Ha'penny Ale, Wessex Russian Stout, Sharp's Abolition, Otter Head and Tudor Sugar Loaf. I think that was the lot, apologies if I missed any.
After that lot, the ciders were slightly dissapointing - Thatcher's Gold, Symonds Founders Reserve and Blackthorn. After such a good variety of beers it seems a bit odd to have three broadly similar ciders, and not a "proper" one amongst them.
Blackthorn - 20 Feb 2010 16:29
After many recommendations finally made the Stars. 7 cracking beers on ; the three we tried were in excellent condition. All that it needs to be perfect is to lose the TV and poole table
Latitude - 20 Feb 2010 13:45
Good beer and prices, nice gesture with the CAMRA discount, which I didn't even have to ask for.
daveinbrum - 16 Feb 2010 17:56
What a great pub, minimalist back street boozer with 7 ales on. Good jukebox which was faded as a band took to the stage The Cheddar Potholer was great and they also had beers from Cotleigh, Downton and Sharps. 4.40 for 2 pints. I'm giving this one a 9.
Booze_Allen - 8 Feb 2010 17:18
Popped in before and after the sky blues game. Tried Downton-dark delight, Blindmans- 2010 odyssey, Cotleigh-honey buzzard and Vale-seven nations. All were in excellent condition. The beer was very reasonably priced also. Cracking, friendly pub with a lot to recommend.
spookyhead - 7 Feb 2010 14:54
a spit and sawdust type pub, live music is sometimes played, beer was excellent quality & very reasonably priced with a great range.
Abteilung - 6 Feb 2010 17:55
Good range of good value ales(especially for CAMRA members). Noisy and bright and clearly very popular. Landlord seems friendly. Still prefer the Cornubia as my final pub before heading back to the station.
baxterfish - 12 Jan 2010 15:29
Still a great place.

Prices changed earlier this month - CAMRA members at all times, everyone on Wednesdays and happy hour (1430 -1830 weekdays only (I think)) now 2.20 with stronger beers at 2.40 plus one changing beer at 2.
cheshirecat - 8 Jan 2010 10:28
Yes - there has certainly been no sign of a down turn in quality since LL change. Seven ales on - a really good range of different types. The Rudolph from Stonehenge and O Hanlons Port Stout were served in tip top condition and enjoyed the eclectic range of music being played. The service was excellent - the welcome was warm and really, this is a pub really worth the effort of going out of your way to visit. A ten out of ten from me.
Dandillus - 17 Dec 2009 20:14
We had 2 weeks sampling Devons delights but ts always good to be home. Only stopped for 1 after the train journey but the Pint of heritage was top draw. Ahhh Home sweet home
bobbeer100 - 14 Dec 2009 18:12
From a real ale point of view , if you could only ever use one pub for the rest of your life ,choose this one , excellent choice , excellent quality , and reasonable prices , plus a pub that a does music at the weekends . if your coming from temple meads turn left just before the bridge
beatles38 - 2 Dec 2009 20:11
First time back to this pub since the change of landlord, and was pleased to see there was still a good range of real ales. Enjoyed the Abbey Ales Heritage and the Avon Beer Company Gurt Port Stout. Both in good condition.
gillhalfpint - 21 Nov 2009 14:14
Visited this afternoon. Seven ales from seven breweries on offer, and the Wolf and Glastonbury beers I sampled were top notch. Looking a bit cleaner than previously and the landlord had things well under control. Hard to fault.
downender - 18 Nov 2009 17:41
Not commented on the Stars since we said bye to Steve and Katie but Paul is doing a fine job. The range has expanded and the service is good. Had excellent Kelham Island and Glastonbury ales here lately. All thats needed is a bit of a refurb.

IMPORTANT NOTE THOUGH-
Contrary to rumours circulated from a certain pub by a river not far away(WHERE THIS POSTER WON'T BE VISITING AGAIN YOU FOOLS) the place is open and has been open all along. So come along for good beer and good times. Well done.
an_ecunemical_matter - 17 Nov 2009 16:21
Great Pub, Hopefully be in contention for Bristol and district C.A.M.R.A's pub of the year again. Good Luck to the New Landlord and keep up the good work Paul.
steve_stars - 17 Oct 2009 13:26
New ll but quantity ,quality and of course price extremely good , ensuite ll. only slight reservation i have always had is that sometimes its a little 2 crowded esp fridays , a victim of its own success sometimes , but really there's nothing wrong with that, have only just become a camra member , but go with the flow , that if not camra pub last time , then certainly must be there or there abouts next time.
beatles38 - 17 Oct 2009 07:13
Has become a new afterwork favourite for me this place with thank's 2 a recommendation from a_e_m . For only 1pence more a pint than my other afterwork favourite(The Knights Templar JDW),the beer selection usually has at least a couple of new beers i aint tried, plus the service is fast and friendly. It is certainly one of Brizzle's "hidden pub gems",and long may it continue! 8/10 p.s. one downfall is the bad drainage in the vicinity, and the smell of sh**e can dominate the entrance on a warm day, but this is entirely out the pub's hands so cant mark it down 4 that...
fat_beer_badger - 15 Oct 2009 16:28
A little off the beaten track so we were lucky to have a local guide with us as I would have hated to miss this place. A proper pub with a good range of beers in excellent condition, worth taking your CAMRA card as discounts may be available. Its clearly run with a passion and it was good chatting with outgoing (in both senses) landlord Steve and interesting to hear about the influence of BITE from his perspective.

Millay - 11 Oct 2009 19:29
A proper beer-drtinkers pub, with a basic, unfussy wooden interior. It had a friendly atmosphere, helped by a folk music session going on which gave a very timeless feel. A decent selection of real ales on from various local breweries. The Yeovil Ales Ruby went down very well, and was just 2 per pint (for CAMRA members) too. All-in-all, I really enjoyed my brief visit - thoroughly recommended.
rpadam - 10 Oct 2009 11:15
We came looking for this pub as we had a good time here on our visit over Xmas/New Year, and enjoyed the Blue Bear Re 'session' beer that was on. Not a large choice but they had just finished their beer festival. The sad news for Bristol drinkers is that Steve and Katie are leaving Bristol, but the good news for me is that they are taking over a pub not far from my neck of the woods near Worcester. Good luck.
gillhalfpint - 9 Sep 2009 10:11
Was in for the Festival, a couple of times - and sampled a few new ales. Didn't see the beatles, Father Jack or Mr Gervais (!).

Good quality beer, reflecting the effort put in. Not perfect (but where is?) but currently deserves 7/10.

It will remain on our list of Bristol's best.

beatles38 - 29 Aug 2009 23:35
Sorry i've never been to the sacred cow , as i'm not a camra member , but idf u can give me directions ?
beatles38 - 29 Aug 2009 23:01
Great selection of beer & certainly better than CAMRA's sacred cow across the road. Dangerously close to the office.
aleisgood - 29 Aug 2009 21:18
A pub i've drunken in for about twenty four years on and off , so able to appreciate the vast improvement steve ,and partner have brought to the place , good choice of Beer , and good Quality , my favourite was reach for the ,knew i'd disagree with AEM on something , but joking apart I tried 5 different one's , and they were all pretty good. Moreover in regards to the place ,found it a great place to chill out ,and relax, and chat to other people with the same interest . This was the first time i'd been in for a little while , but will certainly make the effort in the future to visit more . pleasant evening
beatles38 - 13 Aug 2009 21:34
Back to the point-the Dark Star Hylder Blond was impeccable last night and the staff were pleasant. Two other renowned BITE contributors were in and no fault could be found by them either. So shut up and drink up all of ye!!!
an_ecunemical_matter - 13 Aug 2009 17:30
Well I didn't think my first day putting comments on this site was going to cause such heated "discussion". I certainly didn't mean to start anything and I honestly didn't join up just to post negative comments about the Seven Stars. Perhaps I am too nieve when it comes to a system where you can hide behind "userids" (of course I know not all people choose to hide).
Next time I am in the area (which will be soon), I will make a point of introducing myself to Steve & Katie and hopefully we can have a productive chat.
neptune06 - 4 Aug 2009 23:11
Our regulars know better than to take on board your review dolph, I noticed you have just signed up to BITE today along with neptune06 yesterday. If you have something to say, come and see me, If you know me then you'll know i am more than approachable until then i dont put much weight behind your review.

1. I posted the only other review neptune wrote for BITE regulars to make up there own mind and who knows it might also bring some custom to the Bridge.

2. I wote in blocks to emphasize to staff that may be reading this that i do not and will not tolerate this behaviour. If they are off duty then they are more than welcome to play the fruit machine/quiz machine and play pool as i like to do also.

3. If Neptune had asked to speak to myself about the range and quality and service I would be more than happy to resolve his queries and yours also. As to what planet am I on m8, as i say come and see me before ranting which if you are a "bored reg" you would have done by now. im always here!

4. First negative post in nearly two years...FACT. I am more than willing to listen to complaints if they are justified and generally resolve to the needs of both parties, This is why we now offer our ale at 2 per pint to all camra members and will be offering ales from further afield along with locale ales. Our Beer quality is second to none and the awards and financial benefits are there to back this up (we have just purchased our second pub due to the success of the Stars).

Look forward to hearing from you.

Steve

steve_stars - 4 Aug 2009 15:46
Steve

1. there is no need to quote what other posters have said about other pubs; its on the BITE system

2. why BLOCK 'in no uncertain terms....' we all know this.

3. 'appraoches ourselves with any gripe' neptune tried to do just this - but the person was on the fruit machine! (and you find this HARD to take in!! - what planet are you on m8?)

4. first negative post in two years? watch this space....there will be more.

D (a bored reg)
dolphoxe - 4 Aug 2009 08:52
sorry to read that we seem to have lost a regular customer (one who never posted on this site until now) This is Neptunes only other post......

The Bridge Inn, Bristol

The Bridge has been run by some young Polish people for a while now and they took sometime to settle in after Rab left. But now I think it has got excellent again.
The basic Gem & Spa are always on good form and the third handpump now does regular (and unusual) guest beers. A fourth handpump for guest beers is planned, Prices are very good for a city centre (Spa 2.40 and Guests 2.60). It has not turned into a Polish pub and a very mixed clientele drink here (suits & hard hats in the same pub!). Food is good basic pub fayre. Always worth going to when doing a Redcliffe crawl.
And don't forget the turntable and the very mixed collection of vinyl that you can play yourselves!!

3 Aug 2009 22:26

If this is genuine review of the Stars I can only apologise, as Luke D of cornubia fame has mentioned it is always nicer if a customer approaches ourselves with any gripe first before posting on this site (this is our first negative review in nearly 2 years) especially if he/she thinks our standards are dipping.

IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS SHOULD STAFF BE PLAYING FRUIT MACHINES WHILE ON DUTY. I find this hard to take in and will be bringing this up to clarify the issue with our staff members, customers should be getting our full attention when requested if warrented

Our world famous pub has built a huge reputation over the last two years and with your help we can maintain it. To respond to Neptune we have decided to offer camra members 2.00 per pint on all ale on production of there camra membership card all day 7 days a week, we are also organising more ales from my home country(Scotland) plus many other surprises.
steve_stars - 4 Aug 2009 02:39
Until recently I have used this pub almost daily due to the high quality and unusual selection of ales along with the friendly staff. But (and I don't know if I have just been unlucky) recently the quality & selection has been pretty poor. And the other day wanting to talk to the staff about the beer he seemed more interested in the fruit machine.
I think I'll leave it a while and re-visit at a later date to see if I have just been unlucky.
neptune06 - 3 Aug 2009 22:36
So I went back last month and found that my initial review was pretty much spot-on. Quality beer is plentiful and cheap, my Dark Star was sublime. Enjoyed a few games of arrows plus some live music. Perhaps the downside is that interior can be politely described as 'basic'. Personally I'd want to get a pot of paint out and give it a good going-over.

Takes a bit of finding in the backstreets, it isn't obvious to the uninitiated but well worth it - the best beer in BS1 I think (just shades the Bag O'Nails). Given it's proximity to the Bridge Inn, Cornubia, Kings Head and Old Fish Market you can have a good quality crawl here for little effort.
Quinno - 1 Aug 2009 13:01
Finally got round to visiting after seeing this pub recommended in a camra publication. The three of us each found an excellent (and unusual) real ale to our liking. Very busy indoors. so we decided to sit at one of the outside tables, from where the live music was about the right volume to enjoy and have a conversation at the same time. Definitely another on the list of "must visit" pubs for Bristol city centre.
fromedrinker - 30 Jul 2009 15:49
Well worth the short walk from Temple Meads station. I make a bee-line for this pub whenever I am in Bristol. Great selection of cask ales mostly from West Country micros and very friendly staff.
Real ales 2 a pint all day on Wednesdays and in afternoons on other weekdays. A no frills pub with well kept ale.
porter - 12 Jul 2009 22:12
Dashed in on a rainy afternoon, so didn't get to study the new plaque outside. This is certainly top notch, ale appreciating, territory, there is a great range of beers, the punters and owners knowledgeable and the beer was in tip top condition. Certainly the best Bristol pub I visited on the day by a considerable margin, but there certainly isn't much competition.
My one crib would be the continuous Horse racing on the dominating T.V, if a wanted to be in a bookies I would go in one. It appeared people were studying form and the betting slips were being fetched, but I suppose its a way of getting punters in so who am I to complain nyway.
imdownthepub - 21 Jun 2009 11:13
Only popped in briefly before having to rendezvous with my lift back home, but liked what I saw.

A good selection of well-kept beer, buzzing atmosphere and a warm welcome. Pub interior is on the basic side but that's well made up for by the beer.

Will be popping back in sooner rather than later and will leave a slightly more comprehensive review!
Quinno - 21 May 2009 18:54
I just popped in for a quick one on saturday night, first time for way too long, as usual landlord and lady really friendly and the beer and cider was top form. It was really busy but got served quickly by the lovely landlady. The only down side of my quick visit was i ended up chatting to some mad irishman. Will be back soon just hope i can avoid the little irish one.
thebighairyone - 26 Apr 2009 16:57
Always been ok in here, but nothing special to comment on. Music has been fair, clientele ok with a few drunken individuals on occasions, staff are fine, its as I say ok
hammers101 - 13 Apr 2009 18:18
Popped in for a couple of jars last week and was upset straight away, not by the pub, not by the beer, not by the excellent hosts or any of the punters. So what was wrong then? Finding out that the greatest Beer Emporium Bristol has probably ever seen has just been voted "runner up" by the Bristol CAMRA branch as pub of the year. As a CAMRA member myself of several decades I can only say the Bristol branch members who voted for the *restaurant* over at Mayshill as POTY winner are smoking some seriously strong weed that has distorted their brains usage beyond all reasonable normality!

If this is not the best *BEER* pub in the whole Bristol area by CAMRA's own critique of voting then there is no justice whatsoever - As a long standing member who knows what the judging critique *should be* I feel I can freely and justly state what I have done and frankly the above ridiculous decision to award a food pub (that I visit and like mind!) such a beer award shows I made the correct decision many years ago to not bother attending my local (and often biased to a farcical extent) CAMRA branch meetings.

Anyway rant over (LOL) and it's not important in the *real* world as anyone with more than 2 brain cells who likes good ale will decide for themselves after their very first visit to The Seven Stars that this is beer heaven. Where else in the whole county can you get to try the beers they serve here? Perfect condition time after time and at such reasonable prices. The Otley beers alone are worth a visit, Crouch Vale beers in the Bristol area?!? If you've never been here, you visit and you decide - I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed. The only other proper beer pub that ticks all the boxes anywhere near here is The Old Spot Inn @ Dursley (35+ miles away) and that's saying something - CAMRA national pub of the year a year back and on merit - Really, The Seven Stars is every bit it's equal in all respects. Match that *ANY* one single pub in the Bristol area because in the *real* world there is no other worthy winner.
MisterX - 30 Mar 2009 18:56
Visited on a Wednesday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to see all ales on offer at 2 a pint. Good choice too from Dark Star, Wolf, Harviestoun and Sharps. Barman and landlady were friendly. Will visit again.
downender - 24 Mar 2009 18:35
Came here a couple of weeks ago for first time in years (I used to have a pint in here before I went to gigs at the Fleece next door). Appears to be a better choice of ales now - me and my mate had a stout (don't know which brewery) at 2 a pint. Was very busy for a Sunday afternoon and a band was playing. Will try and visit next time I'm in Bristol in May.
mattbeer - 1 Mar 2009 16:37
been in several times and very friendly place staff and customers! planning to make it a regular stop-off even though i live a bit of a dictance away. the music is high quality and we all had a good time there on sunday afternoon

I just want to say thank you to everyone for making us the number one pub on the site as of today! Lots more exciting beers on the way, and I'm always willing to take recommendations for any beers/breweries that you may particularly enjoy.

If you do rate our pub, please leave a comment whether it be good or bad, so that we can deal with it appropriately.
Many thanks again and I hope to see you all soon

katie_stars - 18 Jan 2009 22:45
Totally agree about the MacOtter, top quality. A fairly basic pub, good range of beers, the ones tried were well kept, and the staff were very friendly.
Dylanwing - 18 Jan 2009 20:42
A return visit this weekend saw a vast array of interesting beers from different breweries. The ones we tried were in perfect nick and a mention must go to MacOtter which was simply delicious. This was our third visit in recent weeks - it is a fantastic pub run by lovely people who care about their customers and YOU have a responsibility to visit soon! Cheers!
Dandillus - 18 Jan 2009 19:09
Lovely friendly pub with good quality ales at a great price. Informative barman who told us a bit of the history of the pub. Screen showing footy results was not overbearing. One to go back to.
gillhalfpint - 4 Jan 2009 09:23
Popped in Sat lunchtime for brief respite from Xmas shopping and met with eight real ales; some usual suspects (Bath Ales etc) but also beers from further afield. Bit quiet in terms of other punters but nice relaxing pub to enjoy what was a tip top quality ale. Recommended.
Dandillus - 14 Dec 2008 14:26
Just want to thank everyone for their views of the seven stars and to those who have helped us rise over the last 18 months. Here's to the next 18. If you haven't been in here you are missing out. cheers guys.

steve_stars - 12 Nov 2008 23:42
guinness poured poperly nice bunch of people, winner.
badegg - 5 Nov 2008 14:32
Where do I start? Well for one the prices I guess are the first thing you notice once inside the Seven Stars and look around the walls - 1.50 a pint on ALL Sharps beers all-day every Wednesday!!! 2 a pint on ALL real ales between 14:30-18:30 every day!!! How do they do it? Beer must be stale or out of condition at those prices, right? Wrong! Great range of beers and in tip-top condition on all ales I and my friend tried and the landlord still wouldn't serve a fresh barrel of Doom Bar because its was still just "not quite" ready despite being asked by several punters, quality control seems to be a key factor at the Seven Stars I noticed. Bravo!

1:00 PM arrived and all of a sudden the pub was packed out with office workers from nearby who obviously know value when they see it and know quality when they taste it. Young & old, male & female all seemed to be having a great time and frankly (IMHO) this is what makes a good pub a superb pub. Just visit say Champion CAMRA pub of the year The Old Spot @ Dursley and you will see exactly the same ethos regarding beer and exactly the same clientele mix and the same great atmosphere and hear the cash register go kerching, kerching non stop. It's a wining formula and I'm surprised that so many other pubs just don't get it and copy it. It's not like the Seven Stars is on a main road even to get noticed by passers by, it is hidden down an alleyway so if a pub in that location can do it then others can too.

Very friendly landlord, nothing too much trouble and as they don't do food they don't mind customers bringing in their own on a dinnertime either which is yet another addition to a winning formula and something I have advocated pubs that don't do food instigate for years. It's common sense and reasonable too.

Well I guess apart from all the above I liked the Seven Stars! :-) 10/10 - No brainer if you want the best central-ish pub in Bristol by a country mile. Keep up the good work guy's!
MisterX - 30 Oct 2008 10:39
This place goes from strength to strength. A combination of economics, quality and receptiveness to the customers needs is applied here. Welcome to probably the best pub in Bristol. And it all came from humble beginnings and hard work. ECONOMICS-2 for most pints weekday afternoons, consistently good Sharps and a guest ale are 1.50 a pt all day Wednesdays!!! QUALITY-well settled and quickly turned over ale at all times-Otley being star of the show lately. Full pints and efficient service. RECEPTIVENESS-it has a landlord and landlady and staff who portray a willingness to take your money.(Its funny how this is how so many pubs let themselves down!) They talk to the customers, they listen to the customers. They want you to be here, they want you to come back, they want you to tell your friends. Great jukebox, though the bandit never pays(ha ha ha!!!!). Just come and enjoy how a pub should be. Father Jack says DRINK.
an_ecunemical_matter - 19 Oct 2008 13:13
In its Ushers days, the Stars was always an interesting, but somewhat edgy experience. Whilst never witnessed by me, stories of loud lads using pool cues as offensive weapons more than for playing pool abounded. Nevertheless, clearly the old place was steeped in history, and potential, as an unpretentious quality local that could be friendly to the select few who managed to find it.
And for now at least we seem to have another happy ending. Friendly service. Wide range of interesting beers (the Otley Ole was possibly the most unusual yet appealing ale I've sampled in years!). Busy and buzzy. Down-to-earth clientele but no sign of trouble. Bursting with earthy vitality. And it won't fill you up between pubs!
Well done to these folks, they have struck gold.
TWG - 8 Oct 2008 18:01
A really good pub this, and one that needs new photos posted as the ones they have dont do it justice. Had some excellent ale here - lots to choose from mind - and felt a good atmosphere with no hassle - unusual in a small off city centre pub.
So will go back agin and would recomend. Peter.
travellingman - 6 Oct 2008 14:53
A vastly improved pub this , good choice of beers , friendly staff. reasonable prices .
beatles38 - 20 Sep 2008 12:14
Update: Apologies due re cans of Natch as corrected by steve_stars. Glad to see they are long gone which just shows how far this pub has improved. A hidden gem which lately could show other Hidden gems how to serve good beer...
curioushistory - 14 Jul 2008 08:47
Much improved (sorry boys, the barmaids in basques have been banished!) with good choice of ale and friendly service. Ought to lose the cans of Natch, mind.
curioushistory - 8 Jul 2008 16:50
Tidy and friendly, this rare example (for Bristol anyway) of a back street city centre boozer is hitting top form. Top quality ales at good value prices make it ideal for a swift one after work.
WebelMC - 20 Jun 2008 19:58
I expected good things. Did I ever get them! I had almost given up on finding a place like this. Tucked away - like all the best are -, a landlord with a genuine affection for his business and the building's fascinating history, and a tremendous ever-changing selection of ales. World class
getsit - 27 Mar 2008 23:27
A very nice pub that now seems a little out of place in its location (lots of new developments dwarfing a very old style building). A good selection of ale and a welcoming atmosphere. Considering that it is an historically imprtant pub (Thomas Clarkson anyone), the information on the walls is very low key and the toilets do not smell.
LennyBanter - 17 Jan 2008 10:55
Re my previous posting-

I am reliably informed the khazis will be sorted out for once and for all very soon, and I take the word of my informant as 100% truthful. WELL DONE!!!

Like I said the ale is good and the pub is good. A good area of town for ale,here-Kings Head-Cornubia and Bridge Inn.
an_ecunemical_matter - 15 Dec 2007 11:41
Had a visit with some good Sharps beer TOTALLY ruined by the disgusting smell from the manky gents. A total health hazard just laughed at by staff. Sorry folks but that just aint on.
an_ecunemical_matter - 10 Dec 2007 21:14
What a find! Friendly welcome, beers excellent both in range and quality, good crowd, charming interior and reasonable prices. Will definitely be back.
somertel - 9 Oct 2007 17:50
Lovely pub with a superb range of ales.Get there before six for beer at 2 a pint ! Really enjoyed the Bath Ales Dark Hare.Very friendly landlady too which makes such a difference. Will return when I come back to Bristol.
Miles007 - 8 Oct 2007 13:33
Well, GF & I returned here after 4 months from our first and up-to-now, only visit & the manager not only recognised us but remembered what we drank!!!
The place is spotlessly clean with a good pool table & they let children in. A range of seven real ales, three from Bath, three from Sharps and another that escapes my memory. Brilliant little place, although they can't do food yet until the kitchen is redone - seek it out anyway it's worth it.
Tracerfire - 3 Oct 2007 15:56
The new owners are a breath of fresh air, replacing the faint air of menace that pervaded before. Well-kept Sharps ale on my visit, the whole place spick and span even with the remaining can-of-Natch drinkers!
curioushistory - 18 Sep 2007 14:13
My GF & I were visiting Bristol for the weekend & stumbled across this little place down a side-street. It has recently been taken over & the new owner & manager were in there when we called one lunchtime. We were welcomed as long lost friends & they even got tickets for us for a gig that night at the pub next door! The place needs some work & has a neglected feel but it could turn out to be a real gem. Best of luck to the new owners - give it a go if you're in that part of town.
tracerfireuk - 30 Jun 2007 16:27
Don't hurry back, Clockworkpurple - the ciders have gone. So have most of the beers, the seven once offered now replaced by Courage Best (jeez) and a mere two accompaniments. It's had a rather bland and unnecessary refurb which has lost it much of its character. These stars burned brightly for a while but are now lost in the firmament...
WebelMC - 5 Sep 2006 13:29
i've spent a woefully short amount of time in this pub, but i will return to judge it fully.

first impressions: OH MY GOD they have THIRTY ciders! add in knowledgeable staff, friendly atmosphere, cider festivals (why don't i live closer?!).....i will be going back as soon as i can....
