user reviews of the King and Queen, Hamble

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I choose this pub because the Olde Whyte Hart was booked full.
Now I understand why. We arrived at the King & Queen to find they had no record of our booking. In the event that did not matter as we were the only ones in the restaurant. And it remained that way. Three ales on offer, Otter, Doom Bar & Ringwood best. I had the Otter. The young barmaid placed the cloudy pint on the bar. One sip & it went straight back. Instead I settled for a fairly mediocre pint of Doom Bar. That's a reflection on the way it was kept, not the brewer.
The restaurant was cold though a young lady did light the fire. The menu was very uninspiring & things got worse when the food arrived. Because of the limited menu we went for simple choices. I don't really want to ramble on but there were so many little things wrong. My tagliatelle had so little sauce it was dry. I left most of it. Another of our party had white bait with no bread & butter. My wife had a salad when she asked for a dressing they had none. Quite honestly we were glad to leave.
Later we were told that they had no chef at the moment. If that's the case they had better hurry up & find one. But as far as I am concerned it is off our list. Next time I will book earlier to make sure I get a table at the Whyte Hart. My rating only a 4.

Not bad but the beer chice is rather uninspired consisting of such dull offerings as L.Pride, Doom Bar and a very sulphurous 6X.

Visited this one a few times, overall, not a bad pub, I've actually always forgotten to determine to which brewery this pub belongs, that might be because for one fleeting moment this pub allows you to drift into a make-believe, 'Britain isn't strangled by the brewery system world', as, indeed, it does have some individualism. This is first evident by the nautical theme, but also, and refreshingly for the UK, they seemed to be playing music which wasn't ordered and piped in from the brewery- although the good taste wasn't maintained long. The beer selections are nothing more than average- about 3 ales, but the Best was fine. Bar staff, friendly and chatty, again unusual for Britain, and it all seems pretty relaxed. Britain suffers from a capacity problem with 33 pubs closing every week, and once a few people crowd in then our 'first past the post bar system' means things rapidly spiral out of control- but, that said, we were allowed to eat at the bar- a rare treat indeed in H&S obsessed Britain. The Sunday roasts looks a little like a boiled mush fest to me- although the sandwiches are huge and the fish and chips fresh at least, but the jury is out. Nice crowd of more mature folks, and some scumbags were turned away whilst we were in there, which was great to see. If most pubs in Britain were like this, then it would be a boon for the country. An outstanding grade from me results.

Situated in the high street on the cobbled road before the waterfront it's an OK sort of pub serving 6X, Doombar and Ringwood Best. Sign outside saying "probably the best roasts in Hamble" is pushing it a bit far as the Ye Olde White Hart would lay claim to that. Bar staff always seem a bit more preoccupied with the local sailing crowd and I suppose the fact that they have a laundry on site says it all. Not the best or the worst pub on the Hamble.

Agree with Temperence! Sign outside says "probably the best roasts in Hamble". I would change this to "probably not the best roast in Hamble"! Cheap, but tasted Cheap. Don't advertise what you cant deliver!

Spent a pleasant Sunday here sat out front on the little patio'd area. Quite busy because of the warm weather, and everybody seemed to be enjoying their drinks, and the food, although slightly expensive, seemed to be coming out in large portions. A lot of people were walking up and down the little cobbled road towards the waterfront, and it reminded me of a Cornish holiday scene rather than Hamble, Hampshire. Not too much on offer for the ale drinker, just 6X, Doombar and Ringwood Best, but the pint of 6X I had was fine. Will return again to try the food at a later date. Overall not bad, I give it a 6.

Had a drink and meal In a May weekend at the King & Queen Hamble le Rice. Good selection of Real Ales I had Ringwoods Best Bitter, excellent, had their Ham Egg Chips, on a nice big plate, I enjoyed that, try one of their sandwiches. Could do with a bit of organizing behind the bar, customers were nearly dying of thirst on a hot day, though they did have a large crowd of possibly college students at that time, but eventually sorted out, has an out side drinking very pleasant in the sun, This pub has two unique attractions, their range of rums, I think they get help from the suppliers during Hamble week which is in July. The other I believe is they have a laundrette below the bar, catering for the sailors

Probably the worst bar staff in Hamble, they (with one or two exceptions) would rather talk to their friends or each other than serve customers. They claim "probably the best roast dinners in Hamble" but in truth they are without doubt the worst - usually overcooked mush and roast spuds full of grease but it has to be said that they are possibly the cheapest in Hamble. There is a good selection of real ale although I have been served some dodgy ones (so I'm not too sure about the cellar keeping). Not a bad pub by any means but there are others nearby it that I like better.

My local. Dogs welcome, beer good and excellent real Westons hand pulled cider. Food good value and good quality. Often live music at weekends. Unpretentious so if you are wet, muddy, been sailing or walking don't worry. A proper pub!!

Worth a visit if you are passing. Good selection of ale (Doombar was top drawer) and reasonable prices. Got served quickly but perhaps the bar staff could also spend a little less time chatting to each other/friends and perhaps collecting glasses and wiping the tables down (had to peel my arm off the table when I went to leave!).

Suprised at the low average rating since randomly stopping in there the other day. Had a couple of pints of Ringwood which was excellent. Sharp's Doombar was on as was London Pride and Wadworth 6x. Food was also really good and to top it all, there's a laundrette there in case you need to wash your smalls.

Popped in for a drink not so long ago, nice atmosphere with freindly staff. Top pint of ringwood best. Understand they do food here but didnt try it. They also have a laundry downstairs. Worth dropping in.

I prefer this pub to the Bugle, not that the Bugle is a bad pub, i just think there's less pretentiousness about this place. The beer is well kept here, and the clientelle are welcoming.

Hamble is a very nice place to wander around if you're down in south Hampshire. It'd be rude not to check out the town's pubs. Once darkness falls, you can witness the spectacle of the town's wannabe chavs lurking around the bit of grass by the road junction as well. A source of much amusement when the weather is a bit nasty.

Very quiet when I was there recently which can be probably be explained by the somewhat inclement weather. Ales were well kept and staff friendly and efficent.

My local for many years. Great food, ales and people. Into yachting, ready for a pint? Step into the "office", and don't forget to say hi to Kelly and Roxy.

True yotties pub. This place even has a laundrette in the basement.
Good food and an open fire too.
