After a visit to the Flute & Tankard (not listed on here, but I've requested it to be added), our next stop was the Pen & Wig. Getting closer to the university area, there were a few students in and is was quite busy for late on a Tuesday afternoon. The interior was quite spacious. Ales were Bragdy Twt Lol Glo In The Dark & Cymryd y Pyst, Rhymney Golden Ale, Tenby Harbour Gatland's Lawm Gower Up 'n' Under & Bristol Beer Factory All Things Equal. The cider was Hallett's PX and the perry was from Ty Gwyn. Another decent Cardiff pub.

Nicely furnished, laid-back bar. Prices can be very steep - £4.05 for a pint of Afghan Pale Ale . Almost fainted when I was told how much it was. An excellent pint however, and a good selection of slightly cheaper real ales on offer.

All were craft beers, so I'd not heard of them. It's a shame that traditional beers like Wadworths 6X, draught Bass, Felinfoel Double Dragon and Marston Pedigree aren't generally offered as guest beers. Especially if they were sold by gravity, straight from the barrel.

Worth a visit. A fine run of beer pumps and all of them on. Nice touch of the offer to try and each pump had tasting notes too. My pint was good. The staff were eating during my stay, so there was not much chance to talk about the beers.

First visit to this pub and I had a pint of Hydes Bitter which was OK but not as good as in Manchester!! Decided to eat here and had steak and chips with a glass of wine for 5.99. As has been said it all looks like a Wetherspoons menu but the portion was not as big. I finished with a half of Ilkley Brewery Best Bitter which was quite hoppy and not unpleasant. The staff were OK and although the pub could probably do with a re-furbishment it wasn't that bad. Beer prices were in the region of 2.55 a pint which is about 45p cheaper than my locals at home so I can't complain.

The only good thing about the pub is its very large beer garden but it gets packed out most days in the summer. Not enough room inside when the weather is bad.

The food is average but does have some nice ales which change regularly. They do have quiz night but I wouldn't recommend it.

Avoid this if you don't like students.

Wasn't that impressed. Yes, they have lots of real ale on pump, but it's quite expensive and real ale isn't included in the food offers (grill + drink for example). Food is alright, but the portions are fairly small.

Inside (and the food menu) is like a Wetherspoons. But it's more expensive. 7/10... and that's being generous.

Used to be a fantastic pub, the Sunday roasts were worth walking a fair way in the rain for! Sadly, has gone the way of many of the formerly independent pubs, and the food now has a distinctly 'microwave' feel to it.

The ales are the major disappointment here, the London Pride and Old Speckled hen used to be really well-kept and made this pub one of the few reliable places to visit on any day. Now, despite there being four hand-pumps, you'd be lucky to find more than one or two ales on. Unfortunately it seems these days as if packing the place full to bursting on the weekend and getting rid of as much poor-quality ale is the order of the day.

A real shame...

Probably the best pub in the Cathays area - and just a few minutes walk from Queen Street. Very nice pub which usually has an interesting selection of beer on the hand pumps (though on a few occasions all real ales have been off). Also has a large beer garden - very pleasant to sit out in the summer before launching into a pub crawl around town.

The Pen and Wig - what happy memories! A few years ago it was one of the few city centre pubs with any attempt at a beer garden/outdoor area. So was very popular in summer, many an afternoon was spent getting drunk and sun burnt here. The inside is quite cosy too and they serve a good selection of wines and beers.
