What a change since my last visit. Four real ales on which makes a change for this type off pub, I had White friar from Abbey Ales. Spoke to the landlady Fran who seems to have some great ideas for the place. well worth a visit and the food looked great.

A recently refurbished Abbey Ales pub just north of the main shopping district. Youre presented with a choice of two bars as you walk in, the City Bar and the Sports Bar. In practise the dcor and ambience in both seemed quite similar, the only sports concession being the addition of a pool table and a couple of quiz machines.

Its an attractive enough place, although not in a traditional pubby sort of way. Theres newish looking wood stripped flooring, a couple of large sofas in front the fire place and various rugby photos dotted around the wall. There were a couple of plasma screens around, although these were not in use on our visit. The food offering was very basic, with just four or five pub grub dishes to choose from. The music seemed slightly too loud for the character of the pub.

Beers on tap were predominantly from Abbey, with their Bellringer, Hells Bells and Winter Warmer. There was also BFG from Black Country Ales. The solitary cider was Thatchers Gold.

Bloody Hell! Whats happened here its brilliant completely refurbished wooden floors sofas etc but done stylishly.Recognise bar staff from Pig and Fiddle and Adventure Cafe and they are really helpful. Bar food is limited however pizzas etc but excellent. Brilliant range of beers Bellringer from Bath and foreign lagers no Fosters rubbish. Well worth a visit

I'd read the blurbs in previous posts about an upgrade on the old Assembly and having heard that it had been bought by Abbey Ales, I entered eagerly hoping to find a new pub bursting with Black Friar and all of the trappings of Abbey Ales success?? Sorry to report I found an Assembly still struggling to extracate itself from its own old skin. No Abbey Ales seemed to be on, and the old girl seemed tired and a little worse for wear honestly.... And, this was a Saturday night when Bath's pubs really look to make their week pay off? The Assembly of old used to be a bit of a dive to be honest, but now it's just a bit sunken in the mouth. Come on Abbey, give it a face-lift!!

I don't know what to make of this place really - I think it needs some serious attention to bring it up to the standard of most other Bath pubs. 2 beers on offer yesterday plus a cider. Lady behind the bar seemed more interested in her computer than the customers or empty glasses lying around. Kitchen door open to the pub showing a less than tidy kitchen - not terribly inviting really.

Currently being refurbished. Has been bought by Abbey Ales who brew Bellringer up the road.

Nice enough pub, not to crowded or rowdy. The prices have gone up, but not expensive, just no longer cheap.
Beer choice is now much better.

A nice pub. Never eaten there but often begin nights out in town. Popular with students (the uni's water polo team go there a lot) and the landlord is always friendly, as well as making sure that people dont have too much. On the last visit he swapped my drunk friend's remaining half pint for a pint of water and refunded the price of the cider!!

I go here several times a week. Under new management and prices have gone up - but they now stock Doombar, Old Rosie and Stowford Press and a few other real ales. Great place to watch the rugby or football. And because it's not in the centre you don't get many chavs there! New food menu too.

i used to go here in the early 80s when i was a teenager, went there recently when i was back in bath, it's no longer the choice of the younger drinker, it's one of my dad's favourite pubs, and he won't see 60 again...

Sometimes crowded but usually not as bad as the pubs/bars at the top of Milsom street. Pool tables a bonus for a pub so close to the centre. If it wasn't cheap it would be nothing special (sweaty+smoky+naff food) but its about 50m from the Circus on a nice street so 6/10 from me.

This place is famous for the drunk Steve Ryder lookalike who stumbles around shouting and threatening the youth of Bath whilst swigging from an always empty bottle of Gold Label, Of which most of it has gone down his beige Pringle pullover!

I've been going to the Assembly since I was yay high (though for legal reasons we'll say that was because I was a short 18 year old, and have since had a growth spurt to my current 5'11), and even though I don't currently live in Bath, I still consider it my local. The last review on this site was done about a year ago, and since then the pub has changed a bit- the menu has changed (it's now good, yet reasonably priced- and has unlimited chips!) there are more TV's and more weekly events (eg. Kareoke) and there's sofas! It's still cheap- 1.69 for a pint of Carlsberg- which is very good for Bath, and the Atmosphere is more lively and cheerful. I love this pub, and would recommend it to anyone.

Think I must have got comments on the wrong pub originally..

This place is cheap, but not that cheerful - There are many other nicer pubs to go in around here.

Cheap, swlightly sweaty and student filled. Cheap is the key word though.

Cheap!

This is a tiny, overpriced, overrated place. Avoid, there are so many better pubs in Bath to go to.
TheGP - 10 Aug 2004 15:04
Probably a very good pub run very well by to people missed very much

Good, cheap beer on offer. Usually one "mainstream" real ale on tap (e.g. 6X). Great quiz on Sunday nights, usually very competitive.

One of the few 'real' pubs left in Bath. Now known to be THE STUDENT PUB in Bath. The food and drink prices have to be the lowest in the area without quality being compromised. Also has a Pool table and big screen TV.
