user reviews of the Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

As traditional as Pie and Mash,Tower Bridge and the Artful Dodger. An absolute gem of a pub, untouched and unspoiled and an amazing experience with very nice staff. When people wonder why pub’s struggle they should visit this place and see how pubs should be and how staff should treat customers
wooser - 9 Dec 2023 14:44
Popped in here on a warm summer evening as part of a crawl. The only place where you could get a pint for under a fiver. A busy, traditional pub. My pint of Adnams, although drinkable, was 'on the turn', not unusual in this warm weather. Other people's beer was okay. As the pub was crowded, we had to drink our beer in the piss covered, litter strewn alley outside. Not a favourite on mine.
HornchurchJohn - 2 Jul 2019 07:18
I visited the pub on Saturday the 16th May 2015 but found no sign of the totally mad barman ‘Grotesque Morrissey’ which was detrimental to the running of the pub in my opinion.
The two attractive female staff members seemed to be more interested in conducting social media, and in fact had reserved two stools at the end of the bar by placing beer mats on them – I assume to make their life even more comfortable. Come back ‘Grotesque Morrissey’ and sort the service out, all is forgiven!

pubwatch - 20 May 2015 16:42
Have always loved this pub, it's a real gem. Should be interesting to see what happens if it is actually changing hands. Hopefully the aforementioned barman will be making an exit. Started going there a few years ago with a bunch of mates but eventually stopped going after seeing him 'in action' one too many times. Didn't want to be contributing to the wages of someone who seems to get his kicks bullying young women. Disgraceful. Glad someone else mentioned it below, because people like that need outing!
sat_suma - 5 Feb 2015 18:49
its small, hard to find and has no natural light. But, this is a cracking London Boozer! what makes it great aside from the above? had to sign up to write a review as I heard a rumour its changing hands in the near future

The staff are ace: Fiona who's always there when I'm in, doing a million things at once, always with a smile on her face. The young actors behind the bar make it a fun place to be and gives it an ambience you'd hope for (but rarely see) in a Theatreland pub.

Oh and check out the fantastic, idiosyncratic selection of Gins and Malts, you don't see those in many London pubs these days. To see a pub that has such thought and love put into it, makes me love it too.

jonny_utah - 5 Feb 2015 13:28
Such a fantastic pub. Real old London charm. Been in a few times now and only spoilt by what seemed to be a total mad man behind the bar. Didn't catch his name but he sort of resembles a groteseque version of Morrisey. SO disgustingly rude to the other bar staff and not much better to the customers. Genuinely never seen anything like it. Shame.
lampodini - 2 Feb 2015 13:41
This pub is not particularly easy to find. It's up a narrow alleyway just off the Strand. But I believe the entrance is currently obscured by scaffolding. I've wandered in here and walked back out again, disappointed by the range of ales. But on Saturday, I was determined to stay for a drink. Tea & Hophead were the 2 ales. I opted for a bottle of the Old Engine Oil from Harviestoun. The landlord seems quite a cheery chap, if not a bit loud. There was an interesting range of customers ranging from football fans to theatre goers and romantic couples. The interior is dark, as there's not much light from the alleyway. But this adds to the ambience. The trip to the toilets is certainly not for the faint of heart - a very interesting experience. Whilst the ale range may not be the best, this ended up being my favourite new pub of the day and is well worth searching out.
blue_scrumpy - 26 Jan 2015 21:47
Marvellous little pub, not easy to find even if you have been there before. On my first visit in 2013 I was the only customer; the barman & I watched a bit of Ashes cricket. This year there were a few folk scattered about, Commonwealth Games on the flat screen. Contrary to some commentator's opinions, all were, or seemed to be, tourists. We're not all wealthy lemmings flocking the streets gawking at tacky souvenirs, some of us use websites like this to navigate the real London. My pint of Tribute was fine, 3.70, service friendly & efficient; the whole experience was pleasant.
Queenslander - 26 Nov 2014 21:56
It's well worth suffering both the suits and the paucity of available seating to grab yourself a pint in this little wonder. Stuffed down some back passage coming off of The Strand, glance towards the south side of the street and you'll miss it. We're talking traditional boozing here: high ceilings, dark red walls, dim lights, a jukebox, and Victorian artwork. It is great place to visit during the winter months, but any time of year will do. Nell Gwynne was apparently the mistress of Charles II, among other things. 9/10
TheKindnessOfTrees - 24 Oct 2014 19:33
Very dark and unlit pub with friendly bar staff and inaccessible Gents. Three real ales on offer including St Austell Tribute and Tea, both of which were very tasty, although my guts were feeling pretty bruised the next day. A hidden gem which is difficult to find down a back passage, and mercifully free of tourists.

Number11 - 20 Sep 2014 22:01
One of London’s hidden gems, the Nell is a small but homely boozer tucked down an alley off The Strand. Blink and you could miss it. This pub is always dimly lit inside, which I like because I always feel I look better in the dark. Usually three or four decent ales on tap - on my visit they had St Austell’s Tribute, Bombardier and Deuchars IPA. Get’s busy on nice evenings when the work crowd spills out into the alley for a pint and a puff. Be careful when heading to and from the loo, the staircase is just as tricky as the North Face of the Eiger.
theinnspectre.com - 16 Apr 2013 11:54
Can't believe I have never been here before! Cute compact London-style pub down an alley. Friendly atmosphere and not too touristy considering its location.
mozzzzzz - 21 Mar 2013 19:04
My wife and I used to frequently visit this pub when we were in town with it's prefect location tucked away on the Strand and it's friendly bar staff always making it an enjoyable experience. However my last visit wasn't nearly as pleasant I was in on Saturday for a quick drink with my wife before going to see a show and we were shocked and appalled by the way the manager (I assume) was shouting at one of his staff behind the bar. From what we heard it sounded like an airing of dirty laundry rather than anything to do with the pub. Regardless of the issue it was iannpappropriate to use such an aggressive tone and such vile language. Needless to say the bar maid walked out after his tirade (good on her.) We left shortly after as we felt so uncomfortable as did many otehr customers. It is unacceptable for a manager to treat his staff with such little respect in any environment, especially in front of paying customers. We will not be returning anytime soon.
rodneysmith - 18 Mar 2013 20:31
A welcome antidote to the tourist hellholes around the Strand and Covent Garden (or Covenant Gardens as an American outside a cafe in Leicester Square called it). The interior is really gloomy (because it is down an alley surrounded by tall buildings) and the journey to the toilets is fraught with danger: stairs almost vertical, steps at the bottom raise the floor level at the same time as the door height drops so going for a pee is like getting into the engine room of a ship. Good beer and welcoming vibe though.
Schwalbe - 1 Oct 2012 14:16
Skipped it tis time as there was only one beer on and I can get Wells Bombardier anywhere - so noting to get excited about. I will go back again though as it is a nice little pub tucked up an alley just off The Strand.
mcroyal - 5 Jan 2012 12:34
Was very busy on the Friday night when I visited. Probably best to visit away from the usual peak times.
dpaajones - 12 Nov 2011 21:52
Great pub tucked down an alley. Trouble is too many people find it.
Its very small but perfectly formed.
rpf1955 - 6 Nov 2011 18:45
I am re-visiting London for the 1st time in nearly 4 years in November and have very fond memories of the Nell Gwynne. On many occasions thought of it as the only place to drink in the city. All the staff and regulars make the Nell what it was and hopefully still is.
Didnt like the negative posts on this site and well in favour of the manager standing his ground. No nonsense pub with what you see is what you get. A great atmosphere with crowds of people having fun. In a nutshell great music, great beer and great memories!
Use to drink with Jules (Rob if you remember me) and looking forward to drinking there again this winter if only for one night .

strongbow1 - 31 Aug 2011 01:32
Its a shame that some people actually end up finding this pub !, anyway never had a problem in here always drop by when in London and i did sign the petition a few years back to keep it open as did er indoors and if she likes the place it must be a winner !
winchesterclub - 22 Aug 2011 14:20
Dear Mr. Duck, First of all may I express my deep sorrow and concern for your mule. I know how heavily the west country folk depend on mules for transport and farming. I have called Rolf Harris and hope he will be round soon with the rest of The Animal Hospital crew in tow. Until then I will be praying for a speedy recovery

Secondly, thank you for your support. I felt like The Lone Ranger. Now it would appear I have a Tonto. Even though I'm sure it's politically incorrect to mention Tonto. But you see what I'm getting at

If Muffin does make a recovery and you ride with him/her into London, rest assured you will be welcomed with open arms. Free drinks are guaranteed. Muffin is welcome too, but only if he is on a leash. Rules is rules.

I would like to make a joke about giving Muffin a drink of Moscow Mule, but sadly, it is no longer in production

Please keep me informed of Muffin's welfare

Kind Regards

Nell Gwynne

nellgwynne - 19 Aug 2011 18:44
I'm a neutral !
I have never visited The Nell Gwynne nor am I very likely to given that I'm a carrot-crunching big-eared in-bred living way out west with only a lame mule for transport.
I have read and re-read the last few posts and felt compelled to show support for the standpoint and equally fair comments displayed by the manager - nellgwynne - as far as the little dispute herein is concerned. As he says, why should he not be allowed to defend an 'attack'.

Q: If the mule makes a miraculous recovery and I one day make myself known to you, can I have a free pint please ?
FuzzyDuck - 19 Aug 2011 15:45
No problem. Will get it in by the end of September
And as I have said, I am completely open to any suggestions regarding The Nell
I'd rather not get involved in any of this again, so if anybody has any problems they can contact me directly either through this website or at The Nell

nellgwynne - 19 Aug 2011 14:26
Ok, fair enough Nell.

I really like your pub as it happens.

Would it be possible to get a decent cider like Addlestones or Aspalls rather than Wrongbow?
Pat_Bateman - 19 Aug 2011 14:12
If Scoobyroo had chosen to address to complain directly to me or the pub, none of this would have been necessary
I have the right to defend my staff and my pub
You can read into this and call it borderline aggression. It's easy to spin
But if you choose to publicly slate a pub, surely one should be prepared for the pub to not just take it lying down?
I feel very passionately about The Nell and it's staff
If passion is to be confused with aggression, so be it

nellgwynne - 19 Aug 2011 13:55
"Do you realise the potential such negative reviews have on my business in a time when pubs are struggling?"

===================================================================

Do you realise the effects your rants may have on your business?

I'm sorry Nell, but you've got this quite wrong. Your responses are overly defensive and bordering on aggressive.

A much better solution would have been a calm explanation in the form of a personal message to scoobyroo.

Now anyone wanting to read about your pub, will have to scroll down past this meaningless fall out, to find any positive reviews.

Pat_Bateman - 19 Aug 2011 13:46
In response to your posts..
@mikey1234. I have, over the years, read many a negative review on this website
I'm fine with that. As I said, I'm aware that some people may come to The Nell and not enjoy themselves. To each their own
I only responded to this particular post as I felt upset as it was an attack on my staff during the London riots. Yes, I carried on, but maybe it was just the straw that broke the camel's back
Do you realise the potential such negative reviews have on my business in a time when pubs are struggling?
You ask why I didn't respond in a professional manner? Had the issue been raised in a professional manner, and not displayed on a public forum, then I would have.
People think it's acceptable to come on here and criticise, yet when a pub defends itself, all of a sudden the pub is somehow out of order.
What gives you the right to attack without my right to defend?

nellgwynne - 19 Aug 2011 10:59
sorry nell your out of order.
guv2 - 19 Aug 2011 03:55
"You say you won't be back. That's fine. It's a shame you couldn't just leave quietly with some dignity" - Wow. What great feedback that is. You talk about dignity yet dont seem to have much when someone posts a negative review of your place on here?

People dont "hide behind usernames" - They simply post their reviews of pubs up on here. I actually really enjoyed my time in your pub but just because someone else did not why attack like that? You made your point about the riots and could have quite easily left it at that but instead had to carry on.

The only person acting without dignity on here is you. If you want to respond to criticism then do it in a professional manner - whats the point in doing it the way you have?
mikeyr1234 - 19 Aug 2011 00:51
I am the manager of The Nell. I have been for 14 years
A friend of mine pointed me to this website a few years ago
I appreciate that while these forums are always going to contain negative as well as positive reviews. I feel duty bound to respond to the most recent criticism
The reason why the staff were so eager to finish up was in light of the London riots
They wanted to get home safely and as early as possible. I'm sure people can appreciate this
I see you feel that the pub is on a "downward spiral" as you so eloquently put it
It's a shame you feel you have to go onto a website to vent your spleen. These sites are perfect for those who want to hide behind a username to criticise
By all means, please mention to me or the staff any problems you may have
We are more than happy to take on board any constructive crticism and act on it
As I said, I'm aware we are not everyone's cup of tea and we are open to constructive criticism
But the joy of London is that it has a wide variety of pubs to cater for everyone's tastes
You say you won't be back. That's fine. It's a shame you couldn't just leave quietly with some dignity
My staff were putting their own safety before all. They are more important to me than any customer will ever be
Enjoy your new watering hole
The Nell has been around for centuries, and will remain so
Even in the face of cowardly critics like your good self
nellgwynne - 17 Aug 2011 22:50
This used to be one of our favourite little haunts however it is sadly in a downhill spiral thanks in main to some very poor staff, they're friendly but sadly lacking in understanding good pubmanship. Popped in last night to give it another try, only Bombadier or Best on, had the Bombadier (it wasn't great!) but stuck some tunes on the Jukebox anyway. At 22:50 the jukebox was switched off, most of the bar stools were placed on the bar and sweeping up commenced ......there were still at least 12 punters left, we certainly felt very unwelcome. Sadly this isn't the first time we've had this experience in the Nell recently, we won't be bothering again!
Scoobyroo - 11 Aug 2011 10:57
We visited yesterday afternoon and enjoyed a couple of pints of Deuchars delivered by a friendly young barmaid. The beer was in good nick. The pub was very quiet and we were the only ones in there for a while but it can get busy. I'm not sure why it is hard to find as they have a big sign hanging in the Strand at the entrance to the alley. One important point is to be careful going to the toilet downstairs, as this pub has possibly the most challenging loos in London, particularly after a few pints.
Sussexcrawler - 16 Jun 2011 06:59
Went here last night. VERY busy and you could hardly move and the slight stencde of 'toilets' hits you as you walk in which isnt great.

The Guinness was good and reasonably priced at 3.50. the staff were friendly and I would go back, just not at peak time on a Saturday night...
mikeyr1234 - 30 Jan 2011 23:59
Lovely little pub just off The Strand.

Not sure if the red lighting is for Christmas only, but it creates a really warm and cosy atmosphere.

The lunchtime regulars seem to prefer standing around the bar, so, although the pub is quite small, I still had a choice of 2 tables.

Was a bit warey of the bar staff due to previous reviews, but they couldn't have been friendlier.
One of the barmaids was doing a funny and very acuarate impersonation of Stacey Solomon. The only downside being that she seemed so proud of it, that she didn't want to stop.

Being a Free House, I was kinda hoping for some Cider other than Wrongbow ... sadly, it wasn't to be. Still, even that wouldn't put me off a return visit.

For bearded types, there was Deuchars, Rosey Nosey and 2 others that I can't recall.

Pat_Bateman - 16 Dec 2010 13:41
I was there on Saturday 11th December and it was well and truly open ! great little pub to be in ,if you can find it that is !!
winchesterclub - 15 Dec 2010 09:27
Couldnt find the place! Went down Bull Inn Court from Maiden Lane but only found a building under construction and a load of workmen who didnt know where the pub was!!
Scousefire - 13 Dec 2010 22:21
A hidden gem of a pub, with lovely friendly staff. Hoping for a second visit this weekend, if family matters don't get in the way (my wife's father is sick). Nine out of Ten!!
ManBat - 9 Nov 2010 17:47
Best pub in the west end!
Well kept beer by well kept, salubrious bar staff. Its hard to find a friendlier pub in central London. Very well priced compared to the tourist traps around Covent Garden, always a good tune on the duke box, except when the footy is on. A warm and cosy pub, especially on a winters evening, pretend youre in a Dickens novel!
Bar staff usually serve a few people at once, so you dont feel like you need to use the elbows to get served
Cant recommend this place highly enough. Favourite pub in Central, favourite pub in the whole of London? quite possibly

JoeA90 - 3 Nov 2010 15:22
Have been into this pub a few times over the last year, normally ok, as others have said it's compact but that's ok, the atmosphere's always been good, and a decent pint. However, on the last two occasions the bar staff have been slow to the point of ignorance, no acknowledgement that you'll be served anytime soon, and in fact made to feel like a pain for wanting a drink.

The last time, just this weekend, we went in and after waiting 10 mins (yes I'm sad I did check my watch) and watching what seemed like "friends" being served, my husband politely said to the sole barmaid "Excuse me I think I'm next" - she replied with a toss of her hair "Actually I'm serving these next". His response was to tell her to poke it and we went somewhere else. A shame really as the pub is in a handy spot!
ChimpyT - 26 Oct 2010 15:24
A lovely little pub, slightly off the beaten track and the Deuchars is still very well kept.
Unfortunately the bar staff isn't, went in there twice last week early doors and was made to feel very guilty as I asked for a beer.
Apparently the telly on loud with "The One Show" was for the amusement of the staff.
A place to avoid until after 1230 or whenever that car crash telly is over and the barmaids have to work.
Simples.
harrythebastard - 28 Jun 2010 21:53
in last sat 22nd good pints of Courage Best and Theakstons Mild easily missed as you stroll down the Strand but well worth seeking out
lilscse - 28 May 2010 20:46
nice little pub - packed with regulars...........quite small. but not bad.
adamwalsh - 21 May 2010 19:35
Excellent pub small, but good music and beer off the beaten track and does not appeal to all which means it is not too crowded.
timengland - 7 Apr 2010 19:16
Nice little old pub hidden away down an alley between maiden lane and the strand. Beer selection was a bit ordinary but my deuchars was fine. Crystal palace v cardiff was on tv with the sound down, theres also a jukebox with a good selection, volume not to loud to intrude nice chatty barstaff. All in all a pleasant port of call. Will happily return.
Picasso09 - 28 Mar 2010 20:49
First stumbled on the Nell Gwynne when down T'Smoke for a theatre break weekend. Have stumbled in and out of it several times since. Cracking little pub that is a must visit on any trip Up West, as they say on Halfenders.
scoobybooze - 1 Dec 2009 15:00
In last night, polite friendly service, and while the stairs to the toilets are a bit of a nightmare there was no bad smell at all. Juke box has an OK selection and volume was fine. Not sure about the staff having Wagamama's behind the bar though.
camraman123 - 6 Oct 2009 14:11
was in here last sat on pub crawl , toilets were fine, football was on tv , but with music on, bar staff were lovely and helpful , we stayed for 2 pints,
have always enjoyed this pub. will be back.
The_Pub_Inspector - 6 Oct 2009 11:08
i wandered in here on friday evening and, having fought my way through the city boys braying at each other in the alley outside, i wandered straight out again.

in the past this has been a great boozer. sadly it now suffers from the two most annoying blights of modern day pubs - televisions and smelly toilets.

i know that the smoking ban has unmasked what was previously a hidden problem but, not to put too fine a point on it, the gents stink like a fleetwood trawler's hold on a hot summer day with the hatches shut. surely it's not beyond the wit of man or woman to fix it.

porcus_volans - 4 Oct 2009 18:03
really enjoy this pub as it does not have lots of tourists or groups of city bods as it is hidden away in covent garden's back streets. the staff are friendly and are happy to chat to you which is something you don't get in many other pubs in the area. the jukebox is great and is a nice place for a quiet drink.
londondrinker101 - 24 Aug 2009 21:49
I love this place, a nice atmosphere and a great jukebox. Slightly odd in that you can't quite tell when it'll be rammed full and when it'll be empty.

The normal barstaff are really friendly, but unfortunately last time I went there we had to leave because they really cranked the music up too loud (i.e. couldn't even shout at one another). I hope that's not a trend.
Captain_Mainwaring - 12 Aug 2009 18:38
First and last visit here. Very small pub, could be atmospheric, if it wasn't for the loud music and TV screens packed in here. Draught beer was warm. Caters for the lowest common denominator.
Disley - 2 Aug 2009 00:00
Nice pub. Cool music. Shame about the substandard beer
doncaosdelanada - 16 Mar 2009 17:25
On the minus side: the dominant aroma does remain of a lavatorial nature (or at least it did on my recent visit), and the bitters could be kept to a better standard, though at least Deuchars has been added to the range.

On the plus side: one of the most atmospheric and iconic pubs in London.
Good friendly service.
Great jukebox.
And above all else - I gather that the Nell's future has been secured (as a pub) for at least a good period of time.
Dartitis - 15 Jan 2009 16:55
Nice small traditional pub with good beer and very friendly staff. Space to drink outside in the lane when it's too crowded.
bitman - 3 Sep 2008 12:36
The whole place used to smell like a toilet, but this problem seems to have been resolved. However, the Bombardier was on the turn and could hardly be recommended. One day I'll call in and find it to be the good pub that it obviously has the potential to achieve.
rpadam - 31 Jul 2008 15:02
Nice little place to pop in, good for a couple of beers but maybe not a whole evening. Found the bar staff pretty friendly when I was there.
OldRogue - 24 Jun 2008 13:59
I like this pub for some reason. Tiny little pub but room to drink outside on a sunny evening. This was pub 8 of a crawl and despite that I managed to visit the toilets without breaking my neck. Must have the steepest steps to a toilet in London.
TheHorsesMouth - 12 May 2008 08:46
A good pub with an eclectic juke box...

Pip-pip!!!
Pillbean - 3 Apr 2008 14:55
Couldn't not go back, and was with a knowledgeable friend (he seems to have an almost encyclopedic A-Z / OS co-ordinate feel for all pubs in Central London) one late afternoon t'other week. Beer was fine, and guy behind the bar happy, and then one of the earlier encountered bar persons came in to work. Said hello, nice to see you, or words to that effect. All quite friendly and welcoming, so we enjoyed another beer before leaving. So happy to re-rate upwards, and look forward to another visit next month.
zorrodp - 18 Feb 2008 17:02
2 bar staff tonite, more interested in chatting to their mates; one had a friend 'on tv' switched off (very good juke box) and resented objections. And then had one of their friends star giving grief. Questioning their customer focus - glass removed still with beer in, and then ignored by both of the women chatting to their friends, and when someone else came in and was served I tried to attract attention, to be informed that one was rude (as the barperson hadn't been allowed to see their friend on TV, and one shouldn't use traditional methods to attract attention) ... and wouldn't be served .... DON'T GO THERE!
zorrodp - 10 Jan 2008 22:52
Visited this pub on Saturday evening. It has a serious problem with the smell eminating from the gents toilet, which could do with a deep clean. Staff not very friendly so will not be returning.
hoppy123 - 11 Dec 2007 09:22
Well worth a visit - friendly staff, limited but tasty choice of ales,a jukebox that seems to play only great stuff (and at an acceptable volume too),and a thrillingly precarious descent to the toilets,of the type I'm discovering more and more while visiting London's hostelries!
virginiaplain - 10 Dec 2007 16:24
Nudging the top40? I dont get it. Nice to find this little old pub down an alleyway, but the beer choice is very limited and that descent to the loo may as well have the Styx running down it.
trainman - 11 Nov 2007 10:24
I visited this place for the first time yesterday and kicked myself that I'd missed it all these years.

Good atmos, good music, and the right sort of punter. Wells Bombardier well kept, and bar staff efficient.

10/10
AshingdonMan - 10 Nov 2007 14:15
Visited today for the first time on recommendation - what a wonderful pub! It would be a huge tragedy to lose it. I expect to be back tomorrow :-)
sussexred - 25 Oct 2007 22:40
A national institution. No one should be allowed to knock this place down.
Winkleman - 19 Oct 2007 14:27
Petition now signed. By the way the sandwiches were excellent.
canastajim - 11 Oct 2007 13:03
Visited yesterday after a long absence, still as welcoming as ever. Bombardier on good form. Somewhat niffy inside, maybe it was always like that and not noticable in a smoky atmosphere. It would be a crime to destroy an individual establishment like the Nell, I'm off to sign the petition.
canastajim - 11 Oct 2007 12:59
Thats good to hear. Hopefully the tide is turning in favour of the Nell.
PigPen_in_the_Fens - 7 Oct 2007 19:08
Thanks for the news JohnBonser
Where there"s beer there"s hope !
winchesterclub - 2 Oct 2007 07:53
Went there on Saturday - barman said that they would remain open till Xmas - after that it's all up in the air - so I guess it's watch this space for further news
JohnBonser - 1 Oct 2007 10:01
Do any of you other posters know how the petition and the situation regarding the Nell is going?
thanks for replies in advance.
winchesterclub - 25 Sep 2007 11:56
Yes, save the Nell, or it's a 'spoons pub for all of us!

Anyway, for those on Facebook (if not, why not?), there is a group dedicated to saving this most treasured of pubs, so come on and sign up!

On the petition front there is now just over 1600 signatures there,if you haven't already, please sign up!
PigPen_in_the_Fens - 22 Aug 2007 15:59
COME SEE THE PARADISE !
(that is the nell)
winchesterclub - 11 Jul 2007 14:54
A gem of a pub amongst the bland places which proliferate in central London these days. If it survives, perhaps a more interesting beer choice would be welcome. The Courage Best was perfectly drinkable but tasted not much more than coloured water. The Sky Sports News on the TV looked very out-of-place but the sound was turned down and loud music was the order of the day.
Yes, a good pub, but it could be better. The most important thing though at the moment is to ensure its survival.
southdown12jack - 6 Jun 2007 12:16
As of today, 30th May 2007 @ 1520Hrs, there are 1,186 signatures on the petition. Which is great (would never get us all in the Nell at the same time though!). Still think we are going to need more names on the list to save ourlittle pub..........KEEP IT GOING!!!
PigPen_in_the_Fens - 30 May 2007 15:20
what's the web address for the petition?
bulky - 18 May 2007 17:32
It was a bit loud. And I'm not sure about that picture up in the toilet. Otherwise, another great night in the Gwynne. Can't believe it might be gone soon.
anonymous - 11 May 2007 11:58
Great pub, though last night's bitter was borderline. Good, very loud music. Well worth saving
bulky - 11 May 2007 09:54
Got the other half to sign the petition re:13 FEB
if she can be moved to save a pub it must be worth saving!!
A pub is for life not just for christmas!
winchesterclub - 9 May 2007 09:59
And my signature today made the number the same as Boeing's famous jumbo jet!
RexRattus - 6 May 2007 12:41
I live in Clerkenwell where there are loads of great pubs within a few minutes walk. I try to avoid the West End as much as possible but when I do head down that way the Nell Gwynne is the only pub I look forward to being in. The 'only' decent boozer in the West End, Great Pint, Staff and Juke Box.
anonymous - 4 May 2007 09:38
Great pub.
seasiderMM - 3 May 2007 15:29
637 signatures as of just now...shamefully, I have yet to visit the Nell, but will now make it a high priority...
Gristy - 3 May 2007 13:15
My name has been now been firmly planted on the growing list of petitioners. Keep it up everyone!
RogerB - 3 May 2007 13:10
589 signatures on the petition as at 12.45 pm today
JohnBonser - 2 May 2007 12:47
Well, the John Bonser roadshow reached this pub yesterday evening - probably my first visit since the early 80's.

Well, what can I say that hasn't been said already it's a gem of a pub and is well worth fighting to save.

Incidentally, the Wells Bombardier was on fine form.

DO SIGN THE PETITION IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY
JohnBonser - 1 May 2007 14:03
Petition signed and email sent to friends who I have taken here to get them to do the same.

Surely they can't close my favourite pub in London ... can they?
kevins1966 - 1 May 2007 12:46
We had the pleasure of visiting "The Nell" twice last weekend.Upon our return we promptly signed the petition hopefully slowing the dismantlement of our pub infrastructure.A real gem of a pub tht reeks of history and times long gone by.Spread the gospel and try to save this little diamond of a boozer. We'll be back there soon.
ginner - 30 Apr 2007 20:45
Signed! Bringing it to the attention of all my pals who drink in the Nell as well.
PigPen_in_the_Fens - 27 Apr 2007 23:26
In the Nell on Friday afternoon - all the talk was that the development is going ahead, sometime in July or August. There was also talk of a legal challenge on the cards.

PigPen_in_the_Fens - 22 Apr 2007 10:04
Cramped, small, dark and smoky - that's the Nell Gwynne. Plus a sortie to the toilets is an adventure in itself with the narrow, steep stairs and head-banging beam. A tall girl wearing high heels and who has had a few has got no chance of making it - she'll probably go head first into the ladies! But the beer is OK and the place has undoubtedly got atmosphere and character and is certainly worth a visit to see one of London's most historic hidden pubs.

Surelt the developers are not going to get away with getting rid of the Nell Gwynne are they? In my borough - Merton - at least one planning application to demolish a pub has been given the thumbs down by the planning committee on the basis that it would be a loss of a valuable local amenity. But maybe different considerations apply here - there is not exactly a shortage of pubs in The Strand area. CAMRA tend to object to the loss of pubs generally, and I can't believe that they would condone the loss of a pub with the history of the Nell Gwynne. Let's see if the local committee know any more.
RexRattus - 17 Apr 2007 09:22
It would be a great shame if this pub was to close and is there really any need for more office space in this part of London can't the floors above be kept as flats? sounds like yet another greedy landlord trying to make as much money as possible. I would suggest applying to English Heritage to see if they can help.
david737 - 10 Apr 2007 18:17
I hope the Nell doesn't close it would be a crying shame if that happened.I live in North London but when I'm in Central London I try to pop in for a few, this is one of my favourite London pubs.
It's atmospheric, historic, dark and serves good beer.
What is wrong with these people who are hellbent on destroying our heritage and traditional pubs.
Long live the Nell.

nickchug - 8 Apr 2007 16:42
This news is unwelcome and unacceptable to those who have come to love the Nell. We must do something to persuade these faceless jobsworth's (read "Developers") That we won't sit by and watch another of Londons historic pubs be consumed in the name of "modernisation" and "Development".

There are plenty who have written here who clearly love the Nell for what it is and amongst us all we surely have the skills needed to make our voice heard!
PigPen_in_the_Fens - 7 Apr 2007 19:38
A real London boozer, not many left now. Lets hope it stays that way...I love it!
avotech - 23 Mar 2007 23:08
A perfectly acceptable boozer in a prime location, but perhaps a little too lionized given the wealth of opportunities available elsewhere in Central London.

4 beers on Friday (Courages Best and Directors, Speckled Hen and Bombadier) which in fairness were served very well.

However it was so dark it felt like I was having a pint in a comedy brothel (yes I know who Nell Gwynne is) and I could easily imagine myself dropping off after a couple.

So we have the pseudo Victorian interior, but then have the two flat screen TV's on the go with no sound. Bearing in mind that this place has the same capacity as a midgets motor home, what's the point?

Jukebox is indeed a very Indie-centric creature, probably more at home in The Good Mixer than here, I would be expecting some Knees Up Mother Brahhhn, or maybe Flash Harry's theme from St Trinian's given the interior style.

Reaching the toilets is like a challenge from the Crystal Maze, though having the timely bash on the head gets you wakened.

I'd recommend it for a slow pint now and then, but not much more.
Quinno - 27 Feb 2007 23:40
This must be my favourite pub in London and usefully a work local. The staff are brilliant, theres San miguel on tap, footie on the telly, a decent jukebox. Its unitimidating, unpretentious and relaxed. What more could you want after work? Other posters are not joking about the stairs to the toilets after a few. Mind your head as well!
maccer - 14 Feb 2007 17:43
Found by my eagle-eyed other half on a recent trip to london.Really good little pub with loads of character and charm .We were going to stay for a cheeky pint but ended staying half the night!.The Directors and Guinness were on top form and the other half was happy stay there always a good sign in my book!!
PS expect to see the stairs to the toilet on an episode of Fear Factor soon!
winchesterclub - 13 Feb 2007 08:11
Great down to earth pub, down an obscure alley which doesn't stop plenty of people finding it (including walking tours). Beer in great nick, staff very friendly, stairs to the loos are an erection of rare beauty, not to be attempted by the clumsy....
TheMortyVicker - 4 Feb 2007 19:50
It is a clich but this is a very friendly, if undersized, pub, tucked away in an alley off the Strand.

The ales were nothing exceptional (Bombardier, OSH, Best and Directors) but it had a certain hum and buzz that is lacking in many places nowadays.
AleKing - 15 Jan 2007 13:30
Excellent little pub called in Sat 13th for one about 8pm not to crowded very nice pint of speckled hen they also had courage directors wells bombadier and one other which was off also has san miguel on tap which is a rarity especially in London will definitely be going again.
david737 - 14 Jan 2007 18:26
Fantastic pub smack bang in the middle of London, mind you not the best place for a session as after a few when you need that inevitable trip to the loo you are faced with a trip so hazardous that it should only be undertaken after a few weeks instruction on a local climbing wall!
Norealaleinorpington - 4 Jan 2007 19:06
A real pub in the centre of London. Excellent!!!
bulky - 3 Jan 2007 14:27
Friendly, cramped pub, all jewel colours and dim lighting inside. Good selection of beers, cracking jukebox and - if you are lucky - somewhere to sit. Tiny but fortunately not touristy, and with stairs down to the bog that require all your concentration. Not much fun to stand outside in the alleyway though, which has an unfortunate tendancy to smell like piss.
treehavn - 4 Dec 2006 14:56
good old pub with a nice atmosphere but not a great ale selection and they did give me a pint in a hot glass!! However, for some reason I didn't give a monkey#s!
mitomighty - 10 Nov 2006 23:09
Will be taking in a couple of "cheeky" pints when next in the smoke. Don't miss much about London, but safe to say the Nell is one of those rare things that I do!
PigPen_in_the_Fens - 6 Sep 2006 21:25
this is an ace pub. have had many good hours in here. good jukebox, frienly people, always has a buzz. and it has history. its great.
stoichkov - 11 Aug 2006 14:16
The perfect place for a long night with the boys. It has a warm atmosphere and the jukebox has one of the best selections I have come across. Topdog Andy is right, though. If you don't get yourself a seat, your evening can be disturbed by people trying to get past you to get to the bathroom every few seconds, which can be a bit frustrating. Get yourself in there early, grab a seat, bung some tunes on the jukebox and enjoy your night. A quick stumble to Charing Cross for the last train, too.
Wooz - 11 Aug 2006 12:37
To the people sat inside - congratulations! You have some of the most sought after property in London, and I'm very jealous. Enjoy your pint and soak in the warm surroundings. This pub is a gem.

To the people standing inside - I admire your dedication. In order to enjoy this beautiful pub you're willing to be constantly jostled and uncomfortable (there's virtually nowhere to stand out of the way, it's that small). A tip of the glass to you.

To the people standing in the alley outside (there's always one group) - Seriously.....take a good look at yourselves. You are one microstep away from being a tramp. Unless you have some kinda fetish for the smell of stale urine, I cannot imagine the attraction of drinking outside of this place. It's not like the exterior is impressive! If you want to drink outside of somewhere, wander down Villiers Street, go to Gordon's Wine Bar, and stand outside at the edge of Embankment Gardens. The two plastic garden chairs outside of this place can only be a cruel in-joke by the pub.
topdog_andy - 11 Aug 2006 12:09
Don't know WTF stamford is on about. Perhaps he got confused with another pub? Who knows?!

What I do know (and I've posted this under other names on this site) is that the Nell is one of London's greatest unknown pubs. It rocks. I've had so many late, late lunches (former Civil Servant) and even later evening's in the Nell. It just is everything a decent pub should be.

And as for the bar staff, well, i can tell you that without a doubt, the best in in any pub in the west end.

Can't wait to have another beer in here, when I'm next in London.
PigPen_in_the_Fens - 27 Jul 2006 17:03
This dingy pub has the world's rudest bar staff, who don't give a damn. They sneered at customers and wantd to chuck someone out because they were sneezing! The music was decent but this pub isn't.
stamford - 19 Jul 2006 10:00
Up an alley off The Strand, this dark little pub has acquired a reputation as a place of honest warmth and character. I've never been that impressed, yet it does have a tendency to linger in the memory - which does suggest it does have more appealing character than most pubs. It offers four standard cask ales - Courage Best, the Hen, Bombardier and Directors - in an indifferent and warm style, so don't come here for the beer. The raised wooden platform on the right creates a saloon area from where those seated can look down on the bar flies chatting with the intelligent and interesting bar staff. Some odd nik-naks and pictures on the peeling Victorian wallpaper, along with the general damp gloom create the feel of an abandoned old person's house. This is, to be honest, a fairly indifferent and tatty back street pub which every town has, and which most people avoid. But its appearance here in central London in a dark alley, and its associations with murder, Royalty and sex, give it a valuable character. As estate agents keep saying, it's all about location, location, location.
SilkTork - 8 May 2006 18:58
Walked in at about 2pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon to enter a scene my girlfriend accurately described as being like a 2am lock in at an Irish pub in a foreign country. Having said that I can see wby it would be some people's cup of tea and maybe it was just that we wanted somewhere cheery - but one scan of the bar counter revealed there was nothing I wanted to drink so was out like a shot and up the Lamb & Flag.
anonymous - 27 Feb 2006 10:55
Good good pub. Nothing amazing but location is good atmosphere is good beer is good the carpet is good. My opinion : It's good.
mitomighty - 10 Dec 2005 12:44
Absolutely brilliant. The best pub in the West End by miles. The trip to the toilets can be tricky after a few pints though!
SusanC - 10 Nov 2005 09:53
Easy to miss this pub as it's hidden down a narrow ally. But they have a great jukebox here! And not bad beer either. lol
edrok666 - 27 Oct 2005 21:13
One of the smallest and hardest to spot pubs in London, sandwiched between 2 theatres down an alleyway between the Strand and Maiden Lane. The weathered sign at the Strand end hardly advertises the pub and but for a small plaque on the wall and a humorously written blackboard, there is no indication that there is a pub within the locality and yet it is barely 10 yards from the Strand. If approaching from the Strand end, notice the wonderful old tiling on the walls before the alley opens up by the pub. A sign on the pub wall gives a brief history of Nell Gwynn and tells of the murder of an actor outside one of the nearby theatres. The pub is said to be haunted (arent they all?). The pub itself is one small room, slightly terraced to take into account the hill down which the alleyway runs. The first thing you notice is that its dim, very dim, with heavy curtains, dark wooden panelling and wall coverings. The walls are adorned with vintage prints and paintings, some barely visible in the half light. Whilst small, the pub is well laid out and makes the most of its limited space, even managing to fit in an unobtrusive dart board. There are 2 well positioned TVs usually showing Sky Sports. I picked a bad time to try the beers, they had just had a delivery and all 4 hand-pumps were out of action but there was the usual selection of lagers, Strongbow, John Smiths etc as typical prices for the area. At least I know they seem to take care of their beers, allowing them to settle before serving. The staff were friendly and welcoming. An excellent, if secretive pub, well worth checking out.
RogerB - 26 Oct 2005 16:06
Another great night in the Gwynne, or I should say out in the Alley Way. Good Beer as usual and when it got too cold and we had to move inside, what a Juke Box for an old Rock head
Gann - 19 Oct 2005 20:20
Last Saturday, before attending a play across the street, we stopped in. There was a good crowd and the staff were really on top of it all. We opted to have our "interval" refreshments at the Nell.. and everyone was so polite we went back after the show for a few more... beer and service excellent!
tutzt00 - 15 Oct 2005 22:26
Well, I think we can all raise a glass to that news! Was in the Nell last night for a couple of "cheeky" pints.

London without the unique charms of the Nell, wouldn't be london at all!
Robbo73 - 7 Oct 2005 18:41
I can confirm that the recent rumor, worrying a number of our regulars, that we are being bought by the charmless Hogs Head chain is totally false. Spread after one too many ales. The Gwynne is hear to stay as Covent Garden's most authnetic and welcoming pub. The Gov.
brynn - 7 Oct 2005 17:03
The wonderful Gwynne. Like a favorite pair of slippers, you can slip comfortably in and let the troubles of the day wash away. A great duke box, staff to die for and a fine selection of ales. Bucolic and welcoming this almost mythical tavern has everything. A.Giles.
anonymous - 23 Sep 2005 09:21
Fantastic on a Saturday afternoon watching the rugby and the footy scores. The Manager was fantastic (despite being a Palace fan!) and really friendly. An absolute gem of a pub despite the staircase to the loos!
Hucks - 18 Sep 2005 12:23
If it wasn't for the fact that I can't currently get in there due to "issues" around disability access, I would be in the Nell every lunchtime. Great atmosphere, great cider, almost edible sandwiches but the other bar snacks are fine. Some great staff over the years as well: Laura, Emma 1 and Emma 2 amongst many others, and let's not forget West Ham Gareth. Plus, of course, the multi-tasking Rob. As a pub manager, he makes a great stand-up comedian but even more so as a stand-up comedian he makes a great pub manager. No, I'm too cruel to be kind!
Martinl - 6 Sep 2005 00:50
Had a damn good night in there recently. Good music on the juke box and the cider was great. Decent atmosphere with friendly staff. Thoroughly enjoyed myself as did my partner.
bbbn - 4 Sep 2005 21:38
I was a regular in the Nell thoughout the 1980's and early 90's when Maureen and Charlie ran it like it was their front room.

Many happy memories of the only proper boozer in Covent Garden. Good to see you're all still banging your heads on the way down to the Gents!
twoleftfooter - 13 Jul 2005 15:03
Very nice. A great atmosphere in here. I'll give it an eight - and I'm not usually that generous !
Muffindamule - 20 Jan 2005 21:55
What a pub? It is one of the best in London. Real Ale at decent prices and a perfect place to socialise with the girls at work!!
Robert Seidu - [email protected] - 11 Oct 2004 09:35
The best pub in London!(followed by the Lamb & Flag)
avotech - 7 Oct 2004 21:09
Pub heaven. This pub should serve as a remider to all the chain pubs, that promise the world and deliver nothing.

Would live in the Nell G if i could!

Rob - 3 Sep 2004 16:07
Fabulous barmaids, excellent punters, doesn't hurt to buy the staff a drink... or two!
Marie Martell - 8 Aug 2004 19:08
Fantastic boozer this one. The perfect lunchtime venue, and good for the football as well. It also features those mythical London bar staff who actually want to chat to the punters.

Hoppo - 4 Aug 2004 13:10
one of the few last great boozers in london. top bar staff. contrary landlord. cheap beer. stonking juke box. it smells like a pub should. and those chalk boards bring a smile to my face on my way to work every day.
timmy hagan - 30 Jun 2004 18:01
WATCH YOUR HEAD GOING DOWN TO LOOS!!!!
Excellent pub
Small so frequently Drink outside (if more than 10 people drinking) all airconditioning and vents from nextdoor businesses/restaurants seem to blow hot air into alleyway so even in winter outside warm
Nice European al Fresco feel
Tom Williams - 23 Jun 2004 17:23
Very nice little pub, traditional and basic, perfect. Its stuck at the bottom of a dark alleyway and on a dark evening is very ambient.Good jukebox with elvis tracks available, never a bad thing.Good pub to take a bird and cozy up,if you know what I mean.
Nick Hamer - 22 Apr 2004 15:41
Nice pub with great atmosphere, quite small and cosy. Love the pressed metal ceiling. Trip down to the loo is not for the faint hearted (or seriously intoxicated) - low roof, so watch the head. Great service despite being packed on this occasion. Shame about the TV - unless you're a footy fan I guess: it tends to dominate the small space.
JamesC - 30 Mar 2004 16:04
best Jukebox in London?
Rob - 3 Mar 2004 10:32
Love the Nell! It's warm and cozy... great staff, friendly regulars and cheap drinks.
Jody - 28 Feb 2004 02:40
Everything that a "real" pub should be. Good beer, good jukebox, cosy feel to the place and most importantly.......friendly staff and punters. What a gem! Love this place.
Rob - 29 Nov 2003 16:53
As a student many years past this was a favourite for its character atmosphere, Guinness and friendly Drunk available to explain the deeper meaning of the Duke box Lyrics, and dam right, Owe watch out for the trip down to the loo if you’re taller than 4’6” beware!
Adam Aqua - 11 Nov 2003 10:53
I recently returned to this pub after a 20 year absence from London. Finding the pub was no mean feat as its tucked away down a tiny ally off the Strand (i.e. between Chicago and Stomp called Bull Inn Court, catchy eh not) and the sign on the main drag had been weather beaten to a plain white plaque. Nothing had changed, OK the odd light bulb, cable TV (bad move), loo roll, or polished brass have been added but its still a genuine friendly old ale house. Speaking of loos, I dont know about the ladies but the Gents damn!!
Miguel - 7 Nov 2003 09:47
Cool pub, cold beer, frosty atmosphere........or so it says on the board next to the Abbey National in the Strand.

Still very nice though!
Rob - 5 Nov 2003 13:21
a right little gem, me hearties... a throwback to the good old days when pubs were pubs and walkabout was something aboriginals did. anyone with style, arrrrrrr, will love it!
jolly roger - 5 Oct 2003 13:59
dont go to it leave it alone - you are cluttering up my lounge. tip top pub and u are welcome - just not all at once
TiptopJB - 1 Aug 2003 11:57
I work just round the corner. We like to call this place the staff room. It has the most character of any pub in the area. Completetly unpretentious, no nonsense, dimly lit wee pub. My only gripe is that the ale is never of a very high standard. Bests ticking to the Guinness.
Jim - 19 Jul 2003 14:12
this place is too small..and ive seen better class of fillies in sloane square-so there!

pip pip

belgrave square boy - 17 Jul 2003 10:56
It had such a high rating a few friends and I arranged to meet up there on Sunday. However, it was closed - all day! (perhaps this site could list each pub's opening hours??)
Joie - 28 Apr 2003 11:27
Small Gem Great Little Boozer
Morphy Richards - 16 Apr 2003 14:31
I drank here when I worked near by.....well worth a visit but don't tell too many people it can only hold about 100 people standing up.
stuart - 16 Apr 2003 13:41
Love this place-a real find. Hope they don't change it. Struggle getting a seat but it has real charm and atmosphere.
anonymous - 7 Apr 2003 19:46
Not bad, but not being a local (a Northener in fact) doe sthis mean my opinion don't count when I say pretty good barmaids but not too good ale....
Bob - 3 Apr 2003 13:52
Have worked in Covent Garden for 4 years and have tried every pub within a mile and this is the best by far. Excellent service never get hassalled beer always good and barstaff good on the eye and friendly. doesn't pretend to be what it isn't- doesn't try to serve food for example. Just gives me beer at resonnable prices
arturo_morales - 18 Mar 2003 14:40
Best pub in Covent Garden by a mile - always gorgeous barmaids almost always excellent service always bang head going to toilet(watch ceiling coming upstairs- that's the killer always forget after a couple)Cannot recommend more highly just avoid when Chicago is throwing out the place gets bombed
lincoln mowbray - 18 Mar 2003 11:04
Spot on about the 'heads up' - managed to smack my noggin 8 or 9 times before I learnt the trick. Who says alcohol kills brain cells...
Paul H - 27 Aug 2002 10:56
Very very small pub, just off The Strand. Cute barmaids! Just mind your head on the way down to the toilets.....
Phil - [email protected] - 19 Aug 2002 14:08
Small but perfectly formed - hardy band of locals often vying with theatre goers for an inch at the bar. And yes, the barmaids are lovely and there is a decent jukebox
Paul H - 9 Jul 2002 15:21
lovely barmaids...
...after 3 attempts
best boozer in London
