please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Pub has now closed down. Rumour has it that an Indian restaurant (just what we need) will appear here in future weeks, but whatever happens, it is another sad demise for the area's pubs.

Pride and Landlord are not the best that I've tasted, but not the worst either. Pub is good for free music, but as a previous reviewer mentioned, the bar can be a struggle to get to, especially if the band are popular. Can get very hot when crowded, but there is a very good smoking area, where most people head for when the temperature rises.

Looks like quite a large pub from the outside. But inside, there are just 3 rooms - 1 main bar and another 2 smaller rooms. There are 5 or 6 handpulls, but only Pride & Landlord was being dispensed. A band was preparing on our visit last night and Thai food is served. The menu looked reasonably tempting. A fairly average pub.

We started of with some Fuller's London Pride that was way off. (Think "vinegar"!) But, importantly, the friendly landlord changed Pride casks and replaced our beers after we politely and discretely commented. Also had a Timothy Taylor Landlord which was pretty good. The Thai food smelled great as the last order came out of the kitchen, but I did not eat.

Friendly Pub, there is FREE music on most nights of the week.

Good Beers (London Pride) and the Kitchen is back open and serving good food.

There is also a car park

Last went here on a Friday in Sept '10 when they had live music - we had a good evening and pub was packed. Prior to that had been on a few Sunday evenings when they have live 'open mike' sessions. These were good but I think they have fizzled out?

Thai food is now gone. The traditional pub menu is back. The food is better than the menu looks. Still the best pint of Pride in Harrow to wash it down with. The bar staff are top notch, the new landlord hires and fires quickly so if they last more than a few weeks they must be good. Its a friendly place, but getting to the bar can be a problem.

Oh dear! Saturday, 5.30 a few mates and I were having a mini crawl through the finer parts of South Harrow and happened upon the Half Moon. There was no one in there apart from the barman. Beer was OK, but that was it.

Pub has improved so much over the past year.
Timmy Taylor's Landlord usually in good nick

half moon harrow on the hill
Fantastic 'Parlour night' every Thursday run and hosted by Mary the Fairy who coined the term...all kinds of music...very skilled musicians ....all nice people plus the friendly vibe created by the lovely interactive hostess is very refreshing....good food.....cosy parlour with fire place leading onto traditional Victorian courtyard for smokes......top recocmmendation for this one......
marythefairy - 12 Mar 2010 10:14
Can thoroughly recommend their Parlour Night on a Thursday. "Mary the Fairy " makes everyone welcome.... you can do anything : sing, play, tell jokes, whatever you like. Standard is set by The Waltzing Matildas until about 9,30 when it's open mic and always varied and entertaining for the rest of the evening. It's encouraging to see quite a few youngsters gettting up there too.
Trad Jazz is good too, mostly on Wednesdays but watch out if there's an "important " football match when start can be delayed . This week it has been changed to Mon.

good food, nice people and friendly service.

old fashioned pub not trying to be a wine bar/restaurant with enjoyable entertainment in the evenings.

what more do you want from a local.

Had a great enjoyable night in this pub recently. It was a family gathering and we started the night by having the thai food for dinner. The food was excellent and the service very good. The atmosphere of this pub is so cosy and warm. There was live music which we really enjoyed. We found the bar staff very friendly and welcoming. Would definately recommend this pub for a night out with family and friends. Well done.

yummy food very good beer and very good music nice polite staff one of the better pubs in the area, had a good time will definately return,
mandyjane99 - 15 Sep 2008 22:59
I have been there alot recently and the thai food is really good. I ave been to thailand and its the closest i have had. It's only six pounds for a main.
I have been for a live band recently and really enjoyed it also. Nice to have a local with good prices and nice atmosphere....
The new manager is trying at least.. Well compared to the local and the rest...........

Now that the Bar manager has left due to the Landlord being a complete penny pincher this pub will be lucky to carry on.

Would be a far better pub minus all the bleedin' Elvis memorobilia and pictures of the guvnor with random celebrites adorning the walls. I hear the boss is
a bit of a fool and this just goes to confirm it. Eating a Thai meal with a novelty Elvis clock gyrating above you is amusing for all of 0.003 seconds.

If you like pubs that looks like someone's living room then it's OK

But went there on Saturday it was a pretty poor pub - service was slow - they serve Thai food but the prices are really expensive given the surroundings and the portions small. Had the shared platter for 2 which was almost 10 and they literally give you two of everything (about five things) - we were so hungry we even ended up eating the garnishings they used to decorate the plate.

Their set Thai meals were around 16 a head which again given the surroundings is way over priced. Based on the quality, price and portions of the starter we decided to go elsewhere for dinner. If they reduced the price and increased the portions then would have been a lot better.

agree with other comments - this pub is vastly improved and has returned to traditional pub values under new management. one slight criticism is that they have dispensed with the adnams broadside - this can never be a good move but otherwise great.

Good news from JohnR. Back in the 80s I was there every Saturday night for the live jazz and the lovely beer. I may return!
SirGeoffrey - 21 Oct 2006 21:35
Real ale & food are back - well worth a visit again.

Has anyone else been to this place recently (March 2006)? I've just moved nearby, and wondered if it was worth checking out.
scissorkicks - 15 Mar 2006 21:24
A return to form for the Half Moon following a change in Management in early 2006. The carpets have returned!

This was once a very nice pub. The Indian cuisine was excellent and the beer reasonable priced. The inhabitants were a good mix and a friendly, trouble free atmosphere prevailed.

However, come July 2005, a new owner took over who promised to make it more profitable. What he did was basically scrap the food, bring in Karaoke nights, get rid of the beer and replace it with lager, stop cleaning the toilets properly, and generally invite the kind of chav scum who had previously inhabited the closed down dive that was the Timber Carriage.

Avoid.
stonesfan - 11 Nov 2005 03:08
WE WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT ON BEHALF OF "MUSICIANS WATCH" THAT ALL MUSICIANS AND BANDS SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THIS VENUE AS THE MANAGEMENT HAVE A VERY BAD TENDANCY TO CANCEL YOUR GIG WITHOUT ANY NOTICE OR AT VERY SHORT NOTICE (3DAYS) AND WILL NOT PAY ANY SORT OF CANCELLATION FEE OR RESCHEDULE THE GIG THAT THEY HAVE BOOKED WITH YOU WHATSOEVER. WE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO ADD THAT THE MANAGER SHANE IS EXTEREMLY RUDE AND UNPROFFESSIONAL AND WILL NOT COMPROMISE WITH ANYONE AND LIKES SLAMMING THE PHONE DOWN ON YOU OR IMPERSONATING SOMEONE ELSE.
MusiciansWatch - 5 Oct 2005 19:37
Chav city!!!
anonymous - 15 Aug 2005 17:58
You may like to know that there has been a change of management and a subsequent reversal of the No Smoking policy. Smoking is permitted in the lounge but there are other non smoking areas.
SILVERARROW - 11 Aug 2005 12:15
Went to this pub on Saturday night with the missus and they were serving pints of Hobgoblin which was lovely. The pub has a no smoking policy which is great and they have gained a regular customer from me because of this. Food was ok and cheap. All in all a good pub with good beers and I would recommend it.
will_beer - 31 May 2005 11:51
I like the pub. The food is very good value for a weekend lunch stop or mid week meal. Can get very crowded, especially in the smoking area, (tut tut). Has become a much younger crowd in there, much to the disatisfaction of the "regulars". 5a for a bottle of plonk!!! bargain.
anonymous - 29 Jul 2004 14:52
There are a couple of bigots at the Half Moon, no more than anywhere else. The difference is that most of the regulars will put them back in their box if need be.
Bottle boy - 27 May 2004 12:59
A nice locals bar with lively chat and debate , intresting decor and great beer , foods crap unless you like curry but the staff are wonderfull ( WELL DONE GUYS & GIRLS )
Phil - 23 May 2004 12:31
The sad truth is that while the beer and food in this pub is great. The locals are a bunch of bigots, and proud of it. And that's with an asian landlord who has actually made the effort to get different and interesing British ales in.
Pubman - 2 Apr 2004 12:35
I went in to the bar and was racially taunted before I had even placed an order at the bar, nice place to go if you are a racist. Didn't expect that as they famed for their indian cuisine
anonymous - 15 Mar 2004 15:23
The food in the Half Moon is very reasonable and they specialise in Indian Food great for a mid week treat.
anonymous - 23 Sep 2003 17:18
Good pub, new owners for about 18 months, Live music on a Friday Quiz on a Thursday and Open Mic session on a Tuesday.
Serves Indian/Mexican/English food. Good Service and friendly Staff. I mainly go there for the Indian food because its excellent, they have just brought out a new menu with more dishes than the previous one.
Close to the White Horse, Castle & Caf-Cafe which are the only four decent pubs in Harrow in my honest opinion and Ive drunk in all of them (except the new one round the back of Harrow-on-the-hill Station).

Definitely worth a visit for the Indian Cuisine.
