like diamond, 125 is yet another one post merchant with an axe to grind. now its drugs in the Leg - and 25 minutes to get served! had a great night there as usual on saturday night; no delays - plenty of real ales - and excellent atmosphere. but, no drugs...
wtf wtf wtf wth
Me and my family/friends came to this place on friday 9th december and even tho it was very quiet it took nearly 25 minutes to get served. Only 1 member of staff on and the real ale was off, we complained and asked to speak to the manger and was told that he/she does not work in the evenings, we had to pay to replace the bad pint for a lager. Before we left we asked the young girl on the bar if they were showing the live football on saturday lunchtime and she did not know even tho they advertise sky sports. We turned up saturday lunchtime, it was a little busy and again only 1 guy working the bar who was huffing and puffing. No food and when we asked if we could see the southampton match we were told No, only to find out that they showed only the last 10 minutes of it. No food, off beer, very expensive, bad attitude by staff, to long to wait for a drink and signs of drug use in the female toilets. NOT a pub we will ever return too. Terrible show.and this place has to be one of the worst places we have ever visited. wtf
Diamond has had a bad day; this pub is quite acceptables, but with numerous managers over the years. The present incumbents are keen and run a tight ship and who is concerned whether they open on Christmas day, or not?
I, for one, am glad that diamond will not be returning anytime soon - and that Chelsea games are not shown in the Leg; I much prefer Crewe Alexandria (a better class of supporter!)
The pub may be closed on Xmas day! So what?
A decent pub overall - the last poster (one post) is well balanced, a chip on both shoulders.
Not showing Chelsea games shows the management's good sense; they have simply seen the local louts before........

FOR THE ATTENTION OF MITCHELL AND BUTLERS.
WHAT IS GOING ON IN OUR LOCAL PUB. THIS PLACE HAS BECOME THE PITS OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS. TAKE FOR INSTANCE FRIDAY NIGHT, 1 MEMBER OF STAFF ON THE BAR, OVER 20 MINUTES TO GET SERVED, ANOTHER STAFF MEMBER SMOKING IN DOOR WAY TOTALLY WITHOUT CARE OF WHAT IS GOING ON INSIDE. THE BEER IS DISGUSTING AND FLAT WHEN YOU DO HAVE BEER. LAST WEEK NO BECKS, STELLA, PERONI, CIDER OR REAL ALE.. THE TOLIETS ARE NOT FIT FOR HUMAN USE, THE PUB IS UNCLEAN AND IT SEEMS THE MANAGER HAS HAD ENOUGH AND GONE ON THE SICK. WE ARE LED TO BELIEVE THAT A COUPLE WHO OWN THE PERCERVERENCE IN LONDON HAVE THE TENNENCY, A SKINNY GINGER WOMAN AND HER PARTNER TAKING THE MICHAEL OUT OF THE RESIDENTS OF ASHTEAD.
SATURDAY A GROUP OF A DOZEN OF US WENT THERE TO WATCH THE CHELSEA GAME ON SKY ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THE OWNERS HAD DECIDED NOT TO SHOW CHELSEA GAMES ANY LONGER, WHAT A DISGRACE, AFTER ARRIVING IN THE PENNY BLACK IN LEATHERHEAD WE FOUND ALL THE FACES WE WOULD EXPECT TO SEE AT OUR LOCAL. NO MORE MUSIC NO MORE FOOD, NEVER ANY STAFF ON DUTY, INFACT LAST WEEK WE SEEN A CUSTOMER BEHIND THE BAR SERVING HIS OWN PINT, OK HE DID PAY FOR IT BUT WHO CAN BLAME HIM WHEN THERE WAS NO STAFF TO BE FOUND FOR A GOOD 5 MINUTES OR SO AND THIS IS THE NORN EVEN IN THE WEEK.
THIS IS A SMALL VILLAGE AND WORD GETS ABOUT. THIS PUB BECAUSE OF THESE OWNERS HAS BECOME A LAUGHING STOCK AND THE OTHER PUB ACROSS THE ROAD IS RUBBING ITS HANDS AS ALL CUSTOMERS ARE DRINKING THERE NOW AS THEY ARE GUARENTEED TO GET A DRINK WITHOUT A LONG WAIT.
THERE IS TALK THAT THE PUB WILL BE CLOSED ON XMAS DAY. COME ON MITCHELLS AND BUTLERS GET THESE OWNERS OUT, COME TO THE PUB AND SEE JUST HOW UNHAPPY THE STAFF SEEM. LONDON PUB COMPANIES STEALING FROM US ASHTEAD RESIDENTS AND WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH. I CERTAINLY ALONG WITH MY GROUP OF FRIENDS WILL NOT BE RETURNING UNTIL WE HAVE 100% COFIDENCE THAT THE OWNERS HAVE LEFT.......ABSOLUTE DISGRACE
oops sorry, one last comment, choice of real ale could be better, only 1 on offer tonight tho having said that i left skint again and the one ale they did have was very well kept.
The manager here is not everyones cup of tea yet we have to hold our hands up to him for the way he stands up to certain customers where previous managers have hidden away "deathwish", rather him than me"and put up with here for years these certain customers have thought they owned the place and made the bar a very imtimidating place at night but we have been very pleasently surprised over the last few months to see alot more females frequenting the pub, seems the manager has done alot of barring. The pub, Its still very tatty with a horrible school green colour, whoevers idea was that and the toilets still have no running hot water or loo roll
I have to agree with the recent comments where i had no problems getting served, had a wicked soul night a couple of weeks back and watched my beloved arsenal tonight and because we won yes we won, i even treated myself to a hot-dog in there which was lovely, good idea! sky sports legally now too wonders never seek.
There is alot of talk about the pub getting new owners and turning one of the last real pubs into some gastro place, why!!!!!! Ashtead has 2 food pubs and a host of restaurants which to be frank are mostly quiet all week so why change something that isnt broken. In general a good night out to found in here and yes females are allowed in again hooray and also best looking staff for a long time. Heres to many good drunken fun nights ahead down at the Leg
This has changed ownership and apparently is to be changed back into a gastro pub. The old stools have been removed and replaced with more comfortable chairs. However the major refurb is due in the autumn when the pub will close for a few weeks. It needs it because it has bare floorboards throughout which give a very austere look and make it noisy when busy. There is a poor choise of real ale which hasn't changed for years. I was served by a barman who was very surly.
This has been through a down patch, but have been back here a few times over the last few months and has been really good. The music offering has been great too and we like a good band. I note the comments re service and there have always been at least 2 on when I've been in so maybe lessons have been learned. Now back to one of my favourite pubs.
What has happened here? The pub is grubby, badly needing decorated, the beer is badly kept (that's when it is on) and the bar staff cant be bothered (that's when you can find someone to serve you). I hear that many of the regulars have deserted and now drink elsewhere. Wake up owners! - this pub could be turned round and into a little gold mine - it used to be!!
On visit before Christmas ,no staff evident at all when I entered, went round the back calling for staff, told she was in the loo. After 7 minutes got served !Pretty poor atmospere.Had a good Thai meal in restaurant where staff got the rest of my beers !
as a regular of this pub for many years i am very disappointed to see it going down hill rapidly! the staff almost seem to change on a monthly basis and after the initial enthusiasm has warn off after the first few weeks none of the staff look like they want to be working there...and i say who can blame them with a manager like the one they have! he seems to be permanetly drunk or never around to give them a hand...and only seems to put the tv/sport on that he wants to watch! i would like to know if the owners are aware of the fact that football is streamed on hd from a normal sky box...which would give the owner of the pub around a £17,000 fine if they are caught! i have seen over recent months many locals leaving this pub and making the decision to frequent others in the area, mainly due to the attitude of this relatively new manager. also as a cider drinker i have been very annoyed that for the past 4 weeks they have had no ice for very long periods and they seem incapable of going to any supermarket to buy any, especially as those weeks have been some of the hottest we have had so far this year! hopefully this may be rectified very quickly! and another point to make is the unfortunate leaving of the Thai Kitchen! this was a very popular restaurant both with diners eating in or take away, they left 2 to 3 months ago and yet there is still to be a replacement! i hope the owners make some very swift changes before the reputation of this pub is completely dragged through the mud so that those regulars can go back to drinking in their much loved local!
This pub is not what it used to be the staff are all leaving and cannot be retained; the restaurant is no more and nobody seems to care.
Christmas Eve was a shambles, half hour wait for a pint, ran out of glasses twice and only three bar staff were on, but apparently this is a success.
Not great management for historically one of the busiest nights of the year.
By all accounts New Years Eve will be the same with only three bar staff but apparently there are more glasses. This is probably down to people buying their beer in The Brewery and bringing it over.
Get ready for a long wait.
superb improvement in beer quality with the new addition of kronenborg 1664 super chilled. thai restaurant consistantly good very helpful staff and quick service
A real turn around - much nicer atmosphere. Thai kitchen a real winner. Looking forward to Summer when we can bring little one and sit outside.
It is nice to read that most of the residents of Ashtead are giving their support to this pub. It is a sad fact that in the past the manager's that have been put in have neglected their duties and let the reputation of the pub - as well as the interior go to ruin. It is excellent to see a manager like this new guy, Matt to be the driving force behind getting things fixed. Yes, the prices have gone up a little - but the turn around in the food which is now brilliant and the fact that he has helped to fix the smell so that now the pub smells great is just one of the turn around factors. Now we have regular entertainment and a crowd of regularly friendly faces drinking at the bar. I whole heartedly support the pub and will definitely recommend it to anyone travelling through Ashtead,
Management making a good effort to improve the pub from where it was at the beginning of the year. The Thai food is very good and the restaurant staff very friendly. The pub, though, is still sometimes understaffed, the barstaff still a bit more likely to stand and chat rather than see if there is anyone to serve and the whole bar area could do with a lick of paint. Maybe the high prices (which are keeping some people away) have been imposed to swell the redecoration fund.
Smells really bad. Management should do something about it fast.
I believe this pub has come on leaps and bounds of late, yes there it still some work to be done but its slowly getting there. The staff situation has greatly improved, gone are the grumpy students who seemed to once run the place now its a more mature group who are always happy and friendly! something we have not seen for a while
pony2 - 25 Mar 2009 08:48 |
We had a lovely Sunday roast, food was excellent and the service from the young waitress was very good, making a big change from recent times. She was genuinely pleased to get a tip as opposed to expecting one like staff of the past. My only complaint was that it was a bit dead for a Sunday afternoon and the devil was clearly making work for idle thumbs as the barstaff annoyingly let the music play for 10 seconds before skipping to the next song for the entire time we were in the pub, a small point but one that should be addressed by the new management who appear to be making a good start. With the promise of a Thai kitchen starting in March I do hope the management have a good Thai cook recruited and should aim to match the original architects of Thai kitchens, "Churchills", in Kensington for both quality of food and price (£6 all meals) Lets wait and see, but a good start and best of luck....
Had nothing better to do on Monday after the snow fall so called into The Leg in the evening. The place was lively and full !!!!.............this Matthew bloke may just be turning things round ........we shall see!!!!
No...the jury remains out on this place. It would be impossible - in a three week period - for new management to correct major problems, which went on for a very long time. We'll see.
New management been a BIG improvement......noticeably busier with people who gave up drinking here months ago. Nibbles placed on bar in the evenings - had some food there as well the other day, and it was a great english pub burger and chips.....just what is needed.
This is a our local pub and we agree with the other comments posted, however hopefully with the new management things are looking up. BUT something has to be done about some of the barmaids. Most are friendly and chatty but we were served by the rude, miserable one who frankly couldn't be bothered. Dont understand the comments about the locals we are lovely!

A Note to All Our Valued Customers from the NEW MANAGER - Matthew Tillson:
I just wanted to write a quick note to you all to let you know that the Leg of Mutton is under New Management. As of January 12th 2008, I took over as Manager and have already begun to put new practices into place to encourage our customers to want to come back and spend time with us.
Due to the credit crunch our restaurant is closed in the evenings Monday to Thursday. But if you would like to make a booking for one of these nights then just give us a call and we will arrange a table to accomodate your group. Alternatively, why not come and have a bite to eat over the weekends when we are open for both lunch and dinner Saturday and Sunday - with a fantastic, homecooked Roast on offer Sundays from 12 - 5.
As the Manager, I have made it a priority to make sure my staff are welcoming and attentive to the customers - no longer will you be stood at the bar waiting for service - come back often enough and your drinks could be ready and waiting for you! We have also implemented a No-Under 21's policy so that poeple under the age of 21 are only allowed in when accompanied by an adult.
The pub itself has had a clean up and is again the inviting, characteristic venue the village was once proud of. The drinks are free flowing. And I would really like to get to know all the customers and show them that this is once again the venue not just for a one off meal but also for their regular pint or two!
Hope to see you at The Leg soon....
regards,
Matthew.

I have regularly frequented the Leg over the past 30 years and can honestly say that in my opinion the current regime is comfortably the worst (or maybe a dead heat with previous one). The first time (and last) that I tried to attract the current landlady's attention, she ingored me completely and went right round the bar and sat and drank with her mates. The only way to get our pub back is for regulars to leave in droves and drink elsewhere. I haven't met anyone yet (including the stalwarts) who have a good word to say about the place. It is an absolute disgrace that such a lovely pub has been allowed to slide from an excellently run establishment only 18 months ago to a dirty, badly run pub that sells beer (if it hasn't run out) when the staff can be bothered.
Well done The Fox - you said it all!! This pub used to be one of the best in Surrey. What are the owners doing? The Leg has enormous potential and with the right management could be a very successful business.Get rid of the new manager - if you can call her that. To be in the hospitality industry you need to be dedicated, hardworking and above all welcoming. Not sour faced sitting on the wrong side of the bar making your customers feel that they are an inconvenience and please stop putting the chairs on the tables at 9.25pm. People who have been regulars at the pub for decades are migrating in droves to other pubs in the area. That just about say it all really.............
Hi - 3 months on and what has changed since my last comment? A new landlady has arrived and things have changed .......... for the worst!!! Never thought a change of management could make things worse in this pub, but it has. I hear 12 people celebrated the New Year in this pub - surely an all time low!!! When the crowd of local blokes that congregate at the bar eventually get fed up and go to another pub "The Leg" will surely close. And maybe that's the plan ........demolish the pub - extend Alldays next door - and there will be no need for the proposed new Tesco's up the High Street!!! Why didn't I see that before?
I'm sure the owners have outdone themselves here - a landlady worse than the previous one - something we all thought impossible.
There have been more fights in the last few months than in the last few years - indicative of the clientel now being served.
Alarmingly, they run out of beer on a regular basis.....it really is a complete shambles. God knows when the place last had a clean - it is disgusting.
Never do you find staff looking to serve - they all group together doing there best to avoid eye contact - and this includes the landlady - so much for trying to increase profits! Even when it is busy, she is never to be seen serving, but either drinking, or having a fag - never does she try and help her staff. Beyond belief how she has the front to take a salary for what she does - it does resemble state benefits, as she gets a roof over her head, gets paid for doing sod all, gets out of bed when she feels like it and drinks and smokes all day.
What even makes you laugh is that they do have a half decent chef, trying to dish up decent pub grub.....but then they allow people to bring in takeaway burgers from the kebab shop over the road - nuff said.
If you picked up this pub and placed it in a deprived area of Bolton, then you might have an idea of what its like. Maybe that's what the landlady's idea of a Surrey pub is, but alas, is it too hard to find someone to run the pub who can;
1) Count - and work out that when you're down to a few barrels, ORDER SOME MORE.
2) Employ a cleaner - surely, there must be loads of people looking for work? Its not like hiring for a Alan Sugar's next apprentice - its cleaning sodding toilets.
3) Manners - yes, just a simple hello and goodbye. Maybe when the landlady can see you waiting for a drink, instead of gazing into space, maybe, just maybe, burn some calories, and pour a drink. ITS YOUR JOB. Oh....you can smile, it won't hurt.
4) Try and promote your own food instead of letting kids eat take-away burgers from over the road.
Is it too much to ask for?
Well I would love to have the finances to own the Pub. I would shut it down, spend some money on it, head hunt a reputable chef, train the staff to a high standard, and get rid of the scum who have called it their local because they are banned from everywhere else. The pub is lovely as a building it has so much potential as a good local eating place in an excellant location. The problem is that it is a joke, the manager is on the missing list, the staff well they dont know what work is, and customer service is a not in their dictonary. I walk in the place and wish I had the finances because I would aim very high to bring the pub back to what it should be. A good food and drink place, a place where my customers would be proud of socialising in.
This pub was reborn under new management about 8 years ago when it was rebranded and given an excellent restaurant. A few years ago the management team moved on and a guy called Richard took over and somehow managed to improve it! He left a couple of years ago and a series of managers have succeeded in undoing all the good work and more! Meals and the level of service behind the bar have dropped to new undreamed of lows. It is quite normal to be told "We have no ice!", "We have no lemon!" even "We have no beer - only larger!".........and don't head for "The Leg" on a Saturday night expecting it to be open .........it now closes for private parties when "The Management" feel like it. Unless you are a local and go to the Leg to see your mates, this is a pub to avoid .........until the management changes again!!!!
This place stinks, literally
Visited again last Friday and wish I hadn't bothered.
The speed, diligence and tenacity of the Leg team are akin to the board of Lehman’s or HBOS. There is little chance of short selling here as they are just not quick enough to take action.
A personal worst of 21 minutes to get served....The only pleasure being that there was absolutely no communication from the Leg team member (not even a grunt) - they were more than likely just carrying the worries of how to plummet standards of service in the hospitality world to new depths. I don't think that this is possible.
The locals had to help out behind the bar the over evening as the Manager left the pub leaving just one member of staff. Enough said really.
Very ironic that the food aspect of the pub is being lost as the name of the pub would have been intended to show people that this was no rough beerhouse but somewhere where the traveller could get a proper meal. It were better as a restaurant.
Oh dear! The Leg of Mutton...smells like a jock strap which might be the dirty toilets or the sweaty builders who must keep the place going...Speaking of the loos- always nice to walk over a dog on the way...but at least there was no sign of 'charlie' on our recent visit, unlike some other comments...Staff was young and 'not bovered'...to top it off a couple were happily swigging away their pints with their 3 month old baby lying in its pram, losing its hearing as the music blared...but then again there was no sign of a manager who might theoretically raise some concern...I wonder if their trying to run this pub into the ground to sell on as housing? Why doesn't somebody buy this place and make it a decent restaurant again smaller bar and no work clothes would be a start!!!!!
the redeeming feature of this pub is the manager and the staff, both are friendly and helpful. the new manager is a breath of fresh air and has transformed the pub, with a new menu, new beers and live music most weekends. I am not a regular but on recent visits I have noticed that the main problem is the sad locals who spend their lives in there drinking carling then go off in a strop when occasionally they drink it faster than the pub can stock up! a great little pub, shame about the few who make the staff and other customers' lives a misery.
Have visited on several occasions over the last few months as just moved back to the area, used to use the pub years ago but it was a bit too studenty for me.Under mew management now and it has changed completely. Regular live entertainment is very popular and word is spreading, its quite rare to find this in a local pub these days. The Manager and staff are friendly and efficient and there is always a great atmosphere, myself and my friends are looking forward to spending alot of fun weekends here this summer. Can't comment on the food as have not sampled menu but lovely free nibbles on bar when there is music, which is again quite rare. Don't know when other users have visited but I suggest they get out more at the weekends.
Once upon a time there was a quaint little pub, set in the middle of a village. This little pub, was a an establishment of the highest quality, it had magical people working behind the bar and it was frequented by the gentry of the village.
One day a strange mist descended on the pub, forcing out the gentle folk; it made all the magical people behind the bar disappear and the good food turned bad.
This strange mist enabled all the bad people of the village and surrounding swamps to enter the pub; where as before the mist had descended, some mystic force used to keep the bad people out.
Now the bad people regularly drink in this pub and they don't always drink beer as they have arranged for soft drinks in the toilets, the locals often complain that they cannot get a soft drink in the toilet bar, as they cannot find the man selling coke - but they know he is in there, as they often hear the rogues saying "Charlie in the toilet".
None of the locals who are brave and bold enough to still frequent this establishment are sure what can break the evil spell that is cast over the pub, but perhaps it needs a brave knight - someone like "Richard the Lionheart".
More tales from the village and it battle with evil to follow….
Just Don't bother ! If your in need of a drink in Ashtead there are off Licences where they dont have to find a Glass for you and you can actually purchase what you want and not an alternative. Such a shame as it used to be one of the best pubs arround. You start to feel sorry for the staff No training No Management No drinks to serve. Just Give it a miss
This has to be the worst run Pub in Surrey and possibly beyond. No ownership from management or standards appear to be in place. No glasses, constantly running out of beer and bar staff that run away and hide when you enter the place. When you do managed to find a member of the bar staff it is highly likely that you will be served, pay for your drink and receive your change without any eye contact or verbal communication at all - the occasional grunt is a welcome reward for your custom. Standards of cleanliness are appalling and the place has a stench that is reminiscent of an unattended mortuary during the Black Death.
Overpriced average food and an average pub
Pub has gone down hill at a rate of knotts. Gone is the good food and friendly enviroment, replaced by crap limited offerings which took forever to arrive. Don't bother visiting to eat!
Walk in. No bitter. Walk back out again.
Could not believe how much this pub/restaurant had changed in a year. Used to be great restaurant with lovely menu and always really busy. Went recently and left before ordering food as only 4 people in restaurant on a Fri night, menu awful, shortage of staff, bar full of locals - not the same welcoming environment it used to be. What has happened? Give it a miss and head for the Derby Arms instead.
Don't bother with the food. This used to be great for a meal out. I went there for lunch - it was empty and after an hour and a half this still couldn't manage to cook me a burger!
The dining room right at the rear of the pub is worth seeking out, and we've always been pleasantly surprised by the food.
I,m afraid that a year makes a hell of a difference in this pub.Gone are the the good management, food ,ale, staff and customers. In their place, dross, for a captive audience.
At the moment it seem's that no one goes there!!!! How about getting some trade from Epsom or near by......What's on in the leg then? Why come? Great locals but nothing else... Sort it out!!!!!!!
Meant to be a quiz last night but lazy bollocks Jason couldn't be bothered
Now now, you wouldn't possibly suggesting foul play would you? Have to agree that the furniture is better outside though not that keen on it inside. Not a lot of choice on the menu though I don't think it is a "food place" anymore. The inevitable plasma screens on the wall and fairly brainless barstaff. However good on a friday night. Let's face it, where else is there in Ashtead
anonymous - 10 Oct 2007 14:12 |
Oooh! 3 comments in 2 days, that show the place has turned around - how unusual. I smell a rat. I wonder if the pub in Balham has favourable reviews now, too?
anonymous - 25 Sep 2007 14:29 |
More good things are happening here, the menu looks and tastes revived, new furniture outside and things to do for the kids, keep up the good work guys
anonymous - 19 Sep 2007 13:30 |
We live in Ashtead and its good to see the improvements at the Leg this summer.
Food is the best its been (nice to have something 'gastro'), beer's good and the manager (Jason?) and staff are friendly and helpful. Good atmosphere and great after work.
We've now got some proper furniture on the terrace out front (rather than those awful benches we had for years!) All good - we're there - keep it up!
i found myself in surrey the other night and was looking for a quick and filling pub meal
i have to say this pub fullfilled all my needs a great lamb dish which left no room for dessert a good pint of ale and a chat with the manager Jason who was telling me how he was recently promoted by his new owners
give it a try you wont be sorry
Ran out of Carling the other week, how difficult is it?
Went her on the advice of a friend and previous favourable comments on this site. The friend is now an ex friend! What a let down, little choice on the menu, they ran out of 2 beers whilst I was there, Tim Taylors was average at best. Overheard someone saying that it had gone badly downhill since some property developer had taken over. Says it all really
Went in Sat night, everything has changed. Place was empty, food terrible, new furniture is awful. What have they done to this pub? This was only recently a superb pub run by a guy called Richard who really cared about his customers and the community. Hes gone and so have all these principles I'm afraid. Never going back, Richard where have you gone?
anonymous - 21 Aug 2007 18:34 |
Calamity. Richard has gone. Replaced, somewhat dubiously, whilst on holiday? What's going on. The new owner runs a hovel in Balham and probably wants to turn the Leg into another anonymous bright lights and neon bar. Good luck Richard - hopefully we'll see you in a pub soon.

A triumphant return for 'The Leg!' (not lomac) The recent beer festival was great. Nice beer, nice food - both BBQ and kitchen cooked. The only downside was the weather but that isn't Richards fault. I took my family there on Saturday afternoon and a good time was had by all. Thank you. Nice new sign too!!
Of the three pubs in Ashtead this is the only place that allows young children. I have just visited for a meal with two children under 5 and a friend in a wheel chair. They were very accomodating of all our needs. With Great food - well presented and reasonably priced. Would recommend calling in advance for a table though. If you have special requirements they will only be to happy to assist.
I would urge the previous individual to persevere, the food is excellent and reasonably priced. The change of ownership has given the area back its local. I believe that there is a real ale festival in may with 30 real ales being offered, not to be missed

Having read the recent good reviews, my husband and I have tried to eat at this pub on two recent Saturday evenings. The first time there was no food on because part of the building was given over to a private party. The second time the whole place was given over to a private party. The new landlord seems to have forgotten that pub is short for public house. So, to avoid being disappointed, I would suggest you call first to check they are open before you try to eat, or even drink, here. We have given up on them.
This is back to being a REAL great, old pub. Richard, the landlord is making a really great effort to restore the atmosphere of a local pub. The staff are very friendly and nothing is too much of a problem. The Restaurant looks to be gaining customers very fast also. The food looks very appetising, but I have only tried the snacks. ‘The Leg’ as known locally, puts the other 2 pubs to shame. Ian
This pub went a bit 'gastro pub' in the past , but Richard ( the new landlord ) has now got a nice blend of traditional pub and good food . Sunday nights used to be dead but are now getting busier with the introduction of a trivia Quiz night from 7-30pm , which makes for a good atmosphere even if you don't take part .
anonymous - 13 Mar 2007 09:54 |
Recently, Richard the new landlord has taken over the Leg of Mutton and Cauliflower (I refuse to call it the "LOMAC"). The decor has changed just a little, but the main thing is the BEER - now Timothy Taylors and Pilgrim Surrey ale from Reigate (lovverly), plus London Pride.
Richard has changed the entire atmosphere, it's now a true local, very welcoming, great food and ale. Since it changed to "LOMAC" after a couple of visits I avoided it like the plague, but now it's a real local again and thank goodness for that. With parking round the back, great ale, a nice dining room for the missus and great atmosphere, I highly recommend this pub.

A very old pub, originally a coaching Inn. Hasn't changed much over the 40 years I have been using it. It was briefly a Gastro pub when I stopped using it. Thankfully they have moved on. A traditional pub with some very nice Timothy Taylor Landlord and Fullers London Pride when I was there. Back on my list
The Leg Of Mutton And Cauliflower is back on my menu. This was my local 35 years ago,and a heaving scrum on Friday night! The new team with the policy of getting back to a pub with food ,rather than a restaurant with the encumberance of a bar, is greatly appreciated.Richard our landlord has recently introduced Erdinger Weisse and the wonderful Pilgrim beers from the local brewery. The food is good and the hand cut chips are to die for.More power to your elbow !!
Only pub I've ever known that serves Guiness in a straight glass!
The choice of food was fantastic. Although the service was a little slow at times. All locally sourced too!

It was an absloute godsend when this pub was renovated a year or two ago. Very good food in general and the decor is tasteful. Would probably appeal particularly to people in their 30s/40s. Puts the two other pubs in the village to shame.

great food and classy, relaxed atmosphere. Great decor, nice staff and owners. Nice beer garden in the summer months. Saw Jamie Theakston in there once, not sure if thats a good or bad thing! Worth a visit for a meal, more wine bar than pub if your just drinking - wine bar prices too, I guess something has to pay for the menus they print fresh everyday!!

first time I've been in, very impressed. Food was gorgeous and the staff were really friendly. It makes a change from the other bland pubs in the area

Visited LOMAC for a meal last week. Glad to say that they've finally redecorated the toilets. The meal (and wine)were lovely, and the cheeseboard a must (if you're not too full). Only wish their website would work.

This pub has been in Ashtead for years under the name of Leg 0f Mutton and Cauliflower and the new name LOMAC is cheap and nasty-it really pit me off

Didn't like the changes at first and I was always an old school brewery girl, but now its ok. Its mellowed alot since it first changed management. ;o)

I think this pub has become, a welcome breath of fresh air in a very narrow community.

After a bad start the pub has warmed slightly. Having been a regular for many years the change was abrupt but it is still a great place to meet old friends.

I really like LOMAC - nice atmosphere and great food - a real improvement to what the Leg of Mutton....

The name has been changed to "LOMAC" - an absolutely horrible place with stark decor, awful ales, no atmosphere and a bland set of nobodies imbibing.
Definitely a place to avoid like a ladies knitting club.

Perculiar Pub, never had much luck with the under aged drinking and alleged drug taking but now has been turned into a members only club for aspiring snobs and losers wearing ancient Cornhill test cricket ties. The beer is poor and the general atmosphere is poorer!
