Traditional Youngs pub in the well pubbed New Toewn area of Sutton. Formerly a Page and Overtons ( an old long gone Croydon brewery ) pub until 1919 - as evidenced by interesting photos on the walls. Pub was fairly quiet when I visited on a recent Saturday lunchtime.

Had Deuchars IPA on as a guest beer, unusually.

Note the unusual saloon bar on 3 floors.

I'd probably do this one again if in the area, although I did find the excessively prominent "no drugs" sign rather disconcerting.

If you're running a pub with a drugs problem, don't go advertising the fact - and, if you haven't a problem, take the notices down !

Interesting shaped pub with separate public bar, pool/darts room & three different seating levels in the Lounge. Beer standard but good Youngs. Sunday night quizzes are good fun & provide a nice atmosphere for a Sunday night. Other nights can be fairly quiet.

Have visited the pub on several occasions now since new management have taken over-not witnessed any underage drinking. Good atmosphere and like me previous local regulars are returning. Look forward to the new food menu.

Shame really, the new management appear to be allowing this pub to become a creche! Have been in there twice and was amazed at the underage drinkers in there, still had they not been in there it would have been empty

About time someone that actually can be bothered took over a once decent boozer

Hurrah! now under new managment Can only get better.

Public bar seems to be full of wannabe hard boys with about 2 brain cells between all 20 of them...

the saloon bar is full of good old boys reliving the glory days...although theres one bloke who likes to talk while everyone else clearly isnt listening...

I still remember the many evenings spent a this once-legendary establishment. Sadly it has now gone so far downhill, you can see people mining for coal in the souless pit it now occupies. Tragic.

Having been a local of the Newtown I was disappointed when turning up for an England game and found no decorations and about two people in there. We managed a quick half and then piled over to the Little Windsor up the road - shame such a good pub has been left to rack and ruin!

I've been drinking in many pubs in Sutton for many years, and the New Town is one of them. I was surprised to see on New Year's Eve, two astronauts walk in the pub with all their kit including their air packs, remarking to each other that of all the places they've visited in their space shuttle, the New town has by far the least atmosphere.
Seriously though, the Newtown is a pub with great potential but a poor atmosphere at the moment.

My old man and his business associates have used this pub for years, ive been going sice i was a kid and is always good to have our meetings in there.

Its gone a bit down hill lately but we know we can go about our discussions and transfer activities without any hassle..

I did a little Local research on what The other local pubs charge for coke:-

The Nelson 85p
The New Inn 1.00
The Little Windsor 1.10
The Woodman 1.20

I do not like to malign your pub but it does not sound about right to me!
kelvin - 8 Nov 2006 22:11
The pub wasn't empty because of the price of a glass of coke. What do you think pubs charge for coke anyway? £1.60 sounds about the going rate to me.
tobesure - 6 Nov 2006 11:53
I went into this pub on on sunday 29t October and they tried to charge me 1.60 for a small coke when i queried the price they just said thats the price!!!!

No wonder the pub was empty !

Don't know why you're moaning mateygirl.....pub's better than it was a year ago.....hardly any aggro and the food is very good....could do with more bar staff at times though.
tobesure - 17 Oct 2006 15:26
I have to agree with Steve from earlier, was a good local pub under the old management, but now under the new management it's crap...enough said

Local corner street pub, with three "rooms" in the lounge, a public bar & separate pool room. Beer standard Youngs fare.
Wilson_MacDonald - 19 Jun 2006 12:22
Been in a couple of lunch times, barman seems freindly enough. Not overly quick, but there was no rush. 1 good pint, 1 medeoche. Locals not overtly freindly, but not unpleasant. Didn't eat, but didn't like the look of the sandwiches served. Will probably keep trying this occasionally.
johnbabercomb - 1 Mar 2006 21:18
under new ownership-really friendly staff; if not a bit slow service! Great at lunchtimes. Consistently good bar meals and good pint of Youngs.

Similar story. Suddenly turned into an over 21 with no notice due to problems with local school kids (so I'm told). Upon arrival for some food after work, I was (as a slip of a 20 year old at the time), told in no uncertain terms that I wasn't welcome to bask in such illustrious company as the 2 inbreds at the bar. As I protested my ignorance of the new rules and apologised I was rudely informed there was a cleary visible sign outside explaining the rules. Upon inspection this tiny chalk sign had been run over by the manager's Mondeo and was only visible if you looked under his car.
Suffice to say I haven't been back despite now being 'legal' and don't intend to. I'd risk Wetherspoons over this dump.

After a 2 year absence (I used to go for the quiz), a few of us went in, wishing to avoid a stabbing/mutilation down Sutton highstreet on a friday night. On entry the entire collection of yokels (to call the locals would be too kind) attempted to stare us out. Small talk with the bar staff resulted in derisory snorts from said yokels and then come 11 o clock the manager came to tell us to 'hurry up and get out in 1 minute'. Given that we made up half the customers in the place you thought he might want to returning trade. Shit hole.

the funny little blonde lady is the only friendly thing about this pub
anonymous - 6 May 2005 10:52
The Landlady’s’ mother, who does the cooking, is a bit of a dish herself.
anonymous - 28 Apr 2005 19:39
with so many pubs in the area, it's quite shocking how little effort is made to be friendly to new customers.
the locals look down their noses at you, as does the owner. Oh well, their loss....
foods not that great either
stevie2005 - 24 Mar 2005 23:19
who's that funny little blonde lady that cooks the meals
mysteryposter - 22 Dec 2004 11:08
When i first went in the New town i was very suprised... The staff and the customers where very friendly, very very good atmosphere. Now i take my girfriend there every Sunday for there roast dinner, it has to be ther best in Sutton, also very well priced.... Take my word and try it soon
Richard Treadaway - 17 Aug 2004 02:30
quite disapointing, no atmosphere.
and some clicky locals, make this a pub for when your desperate for somewhere to eat.
colin - 26 Apr 2004 23:39
Friendly staff, good beer and children are welcome too
anonymous - 30 Nov 2003 15:46
Once legendary boozer, sadly spoilt following change of ownership. Worth the occasional beer just for old time's sake.
