user reviews of the Nelson, Wood Green

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Rattle & Hum has reopened. It must have cost a fortune as well as its decked out in large screens to watch the live sports and has its own pizza bar inside. Great interior and decent prices to boot and has a pool table. Can't talk about the food but they have draught red stripe at £5.50 and a very well stocked selection of spirits. Its even has 2 dart boards and is def styled as a sports bar. Busy as well this place could turn out to be the best pub in Wood Green.
ganger - 14 Nov 2023 15:23
Up for sale, but only the pub,not the accommodation upstairs .
Can't see much enthusiasm for a "walk in" outside of the square mile.
Still, we may get someone that actually consistently stock at least one real and at a proper price and barmaids that don't both go outside for a cigarette while several people are waiting to be served. I live in hope, until then i will drink elsewhere. And with the newly refurbed Nags Head selling several superbly kept ales at £2.85, i dont have to go far.
tottenhamsean - 22 Mar 2018 11:48
It''s almost as if they want all the old locals to go(many have)
The Ale was over priced (as stated below),but they reduced it to £2.50!! Brilliant!!...Trouble is ,they ran out and haven''t replaced it. Also, they will have one bar staff on and they will watch you walk up to the bar, then decide to go for a cigarette. Also,a bit rude to ask for the money as you order the drink then start rearranging a few bags on the floor, then wandering to the other end of the bar to share a joke with their mates(probably at my expense) before going to the till and only after all this pouring the drink.Disgraceful.
If i was a betting man,i would put a quid on that this pub is deliberately being ran into the ground so the owners can do other things with it.
I refuse to believe the bar staff can be this awful.
What was once a great pub is now deserted and depressing.
tottenhamsean - 14 Sep 2017 12:36
Oh dear, it started so well but it''s a return to the dark old days. But much worse. Doombar @ £4 a pint is a bit of a joke, or it would be if they could serve it. Beer pump out of action for over a week and the management can''t get their arse into gear to get it repaired. Same with the ice machine. You want ice in your drink then go next door and buy some! Not joking, it happens.
Bandersnatch - 11 Sep 2017 15:04
Still a pub.Decent Ale,well kept.But over priced.£4 for a Doombar??
tottenhamsean - 7 Aug 2017 12:30
Open again under new management. Late opening hours, happy hour 5-7 Mon - Thurs, new DJ at the weekend. A work in progress.
ShenaniganOFlanaghan - 26 Jun 2017 14:36
Last day for this place. Been sold, possibly a trendy bar/Diner type place. It was the best pub in N22,such a shame. Another one bites the dust. I hear the palmerston in Tottenham is going as well.
Why is it always the decent pubs with decent locals
tottenhamsean - 29 May 2017 16:11
Great pub.Well kept Ale,and not silly prices. The best boozer in N22 by far
tottenhamsean - 8 Apr 2017 15:47
Using this pub more and more these days.
Decent pint of IPA and good service.
Conveniently placed for a bit of respite from the madness of Wood Green.
Locals are ok as well. Though why the Ginger/Grey Welsh bloke never takes his coat off is a mystery..
tottenhamsean - 13 Jun 2016 15:36
I like this pub.
Tend only to use it to watch Spurs away games, when they are on the box.But a good crowd of locals in the side we watch games. The lot round the other side leave a lot to be desired though.Sadly, most of the real ales seem to be off.but the Frosty bells christmas ale they have on at the moment is not a bad drink. As i said ,i like this pub.
tottenhamsean - 27 Dec 2013 16:52
I concur with previous posts - a missed opportunity and potential goldmine. The landlady has a cracking arse tho and I'm always glad to see the back of her! ;o)
Wiccaman777 - 1 Mar 2012 01:42
Great location, decor not to bad. Drinks are limited, toilets are go in at own risk !! basically the pub isnt to bad... But staff are abit tired in the approach to customer relations... Fri & Sat nights always seem to end up in trouble, i saw one of the worst fights ive ever seen in there so i tend to give this place a miss due to that reason
outsidein - 1 Apr 2011 19:07
There's no reason why The Nelson can't be much more successful. It's in an ideal location just a short walk from Wood Green tube station. All it needs is for its management and staff to serve, not themselves, but their customers.

The reason you don't see anyone in here unless there's a big football match on is because the management and staff can't be bothered to engage customers. Period. Once they've got your money they uniformly swing away - even when there's no one else to serve. How to win customers's loyalty and bring them back... Not.

Sad.
goodtimeguy - 17 Dec 2010 17:39
I have been using this place as my local for well over twenty years now, and every landlord has had their good and bad points, as does this one. Usually they start off being keen on the job and willing to serve, but after a while they become slipshod and leave the running up to the bar-staff. For want of a better name call it 'The Nelson Syndrome' and it gets to everyone in the end. Some sooner than later. Billy has been here longer than most and it now shows in attitude and service, both of which have declined from very good beginnings. At one point this pub had three regular real ales on sale, including a mild, with an occasional guest ale. Mind you this was a few years back when real ale was becoming popular once again. Again last night (a Monday) there was none with scant chance of having any before the weekend! This place still has a lot of potential which has still yet to be recognized and released, and in my opinion will not do so if it continues to focuses so much on football and fizz to the exclusion of other interests. I am told that there is no demand for real ale in this place. Well if it is not on offer there will be no demand as people will have gone elsewhere. A self fulfilling prophecy that much confused thinking is based upon. The other pubs in the area that still continue to sell real ale have bums on seats and are earning money. The other pubs also sell food.
I could continue but looking at some of the previous posts I find that they cover most of the salient points that I would like to make.
This is a pub that needs a bit of direction.

andys_beer - 8 Sep 2010 19:03
I'm so glad DollyBoy that someone else has picked up on the lack of cellar craft in the Nelson. Only one proper beer (IPA) is ever on offer and it's not rocket science to have a fresh barrell ready to go when one runs out. Not so here! One, two, three or maybe four days go by before someone gets around to putting the new barrel on. I thought the idea was to sell beer so that your customers could piss it out, not piss on (off) your customers. Consistency, quality of service and stock control seem to be concepts that have yet to filter through to the management here, but what do they care. Lazy, bone idle or what, I don't know, but other pubs seem to manage the trick of having some beer in stock and ready to go. If you really need a pint of IPA around Wood Green you do not go to this Greene King pub. Still the summer holidays will be here soon and landlord Billy will be off to his villa in Cyprus leaving the great Pete in charge. Everything seems to run much more smoothly then. Billy idle as a landlord, now there's a thoug
BigClair - 29 Jul 2010 12:56
Hot and empty. The air con is just two industrial fans that drown out what conversation there is and only one is for the public. The other is just for the staff. No cooling, just moving the air about. It's beyond belief that they can get away with such conditions these days. Still there was ice for our gassy drinks at least. Yes, there was no beer, Unless you count keg IPA smooth as beer. A charmless place.
PlumbAl - 24 Jul 2010 18:27
No wonder we lost the world cup if places like this don't sell good British ale but pander to foreign larger drinkers. This must be the only Greene King pub in the country, nay the universe, not to sell any Greene King beer. Four hand pumps and more often than not only one in action, and that for only a few days a week. Something must be wrong if the only ale ever on offer is bog standard IPA and that only if the wind is in the right direction and the phase of the moon is correct. You don't get real ale here just excuses. Still a great pub if you like it quite, very very quite.

DollyBoy - 28 Jun 2010 22:40
Have to agree with ppworth79. If your face dont fit the policy seems to be get f**k out. Was in there a month or two ago for the football and the woman was going around checking the leval of beer in some peoples glasses and demanding that they leave or buy more. A bit steep in a full pub with less than ten mins of the footy to go. The little runt of a landlord was safe behind the bar just smirking away.
HeroKelly - 9 Jun 2010 20:53
The first impression was very good. Crowded with all kinds of people, but it took us just 5 min to have our drinks and the staff was not rude even thou they had alot to do. Friendly doormen, music very good. The only thing that ruined the music was a clearly unexperienced DJ, who changed music when people oviously was enjoying the song. I actually heard people cursing at him for changing and talking in the middle of good songs. Bad DJ. The price for a drink was good, no complains there. Didnt see much fighting and didnt feel unsafe. And big plus for being open late! Ill be back this weekend, thats for sure!!
bartendergirl - 28 Sep 2009 22:54
popped in there the other day with my gf, served by a very approachable aussie barman, who when i gave him the right money for the round, slipped it into his pocket when he thought no-one was looking.spoiled my visit a bit, dunno if the manager reads this, but youve got a bad apple i n the barrell!!
walthamstowgooner - 8 Sep 2009 12:50
Just seen ppworth79's post and I find the manager the complete opposite and this attitude is reflected in the staff who cannot do enough, and always approachable. I have spoken to the management in the past who have always been very reflectful and receptive. As for the pub itself, really nice to go to wood green and walk into a clean bright pub. Good hours at the weekend. Excellent D.J's here and theme nights. I have even been moved enough to start up a facebook group for this venue. (we love the Lord Nelson, N22). Peace out!
dustdevil358 - 18 Jul 2009 17:49
not a bad pub in itself, good facilities for football, decent beer etc..the only problem with the place is the landlord and landlady who are pair of little hitlers.the guy obviously fancies himself as some kind of gangster,/hardman,but at the 1st sign of any trouble he makes his wife go and sort it while he hides behind the bar..the woman also enjoys berating her staff in front of all the customers.dont avoid, but dont go when they are around
ppworth79 - 16 Jul 2009 17:30
Has cleaned up it's act a lot in the past few years but still not great. It's gone from being a cosy, shabby pub to a sterile multi-coloured one.

No atmosphere during the week and put off by the clientele hanging around the door at the weekends
LufthansaTerminal - 31 Dec 2008 18:48
Im always a little apprehensive when a pub I enter has one of its TV screens hooked up to the CCTV on full display to the pub. Granted there are plenty more for the football, but I dont understand why they feel the need to broadcast the fact that they are watching you. Is it really that bad in here?

The pub has a central bar and theyve gone for some sort of American Sports Bar feel. Even though the barmaid was very friendly I wont be bothering with this place again.
Strongers - 5 Nov 2008 06:35
Have been here a few times before and always found it a bit disapointing but this evening was the worst. After working our way up the High road it was a bit of shock to find a practically empty pub, miserable bar staff and no real ale. We went back to the Goose, the Nelson was that good.
PeteRains - 8 Oct 2008 22:42
this pub isnt gay but its gay friendly
cazza69 - 26 Aug 2008 14:12
Not a bad place. Have stopped by on the way home from work a few times. Pleasant enough, plenty of TV's for sport.
jonnylong1960 - 29 Apr 2008 18:59
Can be rowdy on weekends, not a bad boozer at all. Agree with the painting.....christ!
London28 - 30 Jan 2008 20:41
Passed it this evening en route and yes, the paint job is unbelievably awful - puke insporing in fact. it was really bare and hardly anyone in there. maybe the interior desginer is colour blind, actually no, just blind.
elllie - 27 Aug 2007 23:16
Still an ok pub, but has had the worst new paint job in north london, it looks like a childs bedroom.
Mattclary - 19 Aug 2007 21:53
Not bad boozer, not one i use a lot though.
And to the poster below, you were probably looking at me when youu came to your conclusion of the people that come in here........But you should see me dance!!
tottenhamsean - 9 Aug 2007 13:17
All I can remember about this place is that they need some air conditioning. Plus, it seems they only have ugly fat people in here.
anonymous - 4 Aug 2007 14:32
shame the place isnt very student friendly,as the barman is hott!!
claire85 - 28 May 2007 14:42
UGH!
anonymous - 26 May 2007 00:16
I use to drink in the nelson all the time. Lisa (the karaoke lady) is fab, Bill is such a lovely guy and when I was drinking in there the barstaff were great. (now rose has left I'm not sure whats gonna happen to the pub)
The only things going against this pub is the trouble it attracts (then again its wood green, there's trouble everywhere) and the girls toilets, put it simply I'd rather pee against a tree then use the loo's, this was one of the main reasons that I don't go in there now. If you want a great saturday karaoke night out (and girls if you can keep the urge to pee at bay) then I'd definately go to the nelson
girly69 - 8 Jun 2006 21:45
very crowded and the karaoke is repetitive
hollylianne - 8 Jun 2006 21:12
Been drinking in here for 6 years on and off. I used to stay into the evenings till around 8-9pm but I moved away and so just visit at lunchtime now.

No food, but then if I wanted grub I would eat breakfast! The staff are really friendly and you can have a good worldly conversation with any of them. Always a good sign when you have staff that are also Pysciatrists.

Place is really clean and the pool table is un-obstructed (always a bonus). Beer lines are really clean and the prices are decent as well.

Decent sized plasma TV's with sport advertised each month. Nice to see the Nelson on the up again now that it has a permanent manager (Bill). Decent fella with good Eastend attitude, down to earth and no trouble place. Well recommended. Also check out the toilets. Never seen pub toilets so clean, it looks like an operating theatre, bright white and makes you feel like your in a hotel, cracking!
PeeHead - 2 Jun 2006 15:30
What a WASTE of an evening.... last time i went in there all the barstaff were happy and smiling.... now their faces make my pint turn sour!.....AND THE SERVICE IS INCREDIBLY SLOW!!!....WHERES ROSE??...come back Rose!!.....This pub is full of jumped up teenagers wanting to kill you if you so much as blink in their direction!.... The Management is nowhere to be seen!...no authority whatsoever. Never going back there again....And i'm not the only one who feels the same!.... The place has gone downhill since Rose left.
Jolly Anglers, here I come!
anonymous - 1 Jun 2006 16:11
I used to go to this pub quite a lot but on visiting it again I'm not going to go back. The bar staff were really slow and ignorant and the place was packed full of teenagers that wanted to fight. Avoid if you can.
stripytiger - 20 May 2006 16:24
An absolutely awful pub. First time I visited at night, the lights in the toilets had been turned off when time was called and the bar staff didn't know how to turn them back on. The second time, I popped in for a quick late pint and witnessed a fight and then nearly got my head kicked in outside (OK, so it was a case of mistaken identity). The third time I went with quite a large group of friends, there had been a change of management, but not customers. It was a Friday or Saturday night and it was packed and there were no bouncers. I got into an argument with some woman over an ashtray (I needed one and she had one she wasn't using), everybody seemed tense and the same teenagers were constantly wandereing in and out which never bodes well for a pub. There were some people who'd just left who looked as if they were going to kick off outstide. I don't usually get nervous in pubs, but I got so spooked out we had to leave mid-pint. We ended up in The Jolly Anglers which had very pleasent door staff and a really good atmosphere.
Iwannamonkey - 2 May 2006 14:22
Great Pub, Nice atmosphere, Great Karaoke, Good Prices, excellent bar staff, Amy, Pete, Paul, all pleasant and great bartenders. What else can I say.........if you want a great night out, head for the Nelsons
Nyitalian - 15 Mar 2006 02:16
2 of the best looking barmen in north london..nice atmos too
claire85 - 3 Mar 2006 15:02
Great pub, fantastic for the football since O'Rafferty's closed
anonymous - 15 Feb 2006 01:58
Great pub packed with a variety of friendly folk!
Great karaoke, cheap and reasonably priced bar.
Would deffo recommend for a lively night out on a Saturday evening.
Bar staff- excellent, efficient, fast and friendly, in particular, Rose....one of the nicest people you'll ever meet!
Going back next week!
10 out of 10.

cazza69 - 1 Feb 2006 07:10
Went there about 11.30 so yes full of drunken fools and I was one of them - I shouda gone to the Quays instead
tullster - 17 Jan 2006 15:57
The Nelson is the hottest pub ever! I've never had so much fun on vacation in my life. The pints are warm and the bathroom sucks, but the atmosphere is incredible. I can't wait to come back and say hello to the great people i met while i was getting pissed. hey rose!
jerseysteph - 2 Jan 2006 17:12
Not as good as it used to be...

easyco - 27 Dec 2005 21:14
Nelson is the best pub in the world (well, in wood green). It's lively, there's lots of young people, good atmosphere, barpeople are friendly. There's pool, karaoke and a dancefloor - what more could you want in life?
s2thafizzle - 14 Dec 2005 20:06
Reasonable pub if you get in early, comfortable if unspectacular environment, decent bar service and a reasonable range of well looked after drinks. Price is pretty average. Has one of those internet jukeboxes so you can get a variety of music played at certain times but there is a tendency to show R'n'B flavoured music channels on the TV and play the sound throughout the pub in the evenings. Have seen trouble in here, but rarely in fairness and neither myself or my mates felt intimidated or in iminent danger of coming to any harm on any of these occasions.
Has a late license, so always an option for a last couple of drinks on the way home, but be warned that for this reason it can get uncomfortably packed with drunken fools after 11.30.
Mr.Monkfish - 12 Oct 2005 09:54
oh it's gone downhill so much. It's loud, horrible and completely characterless these days. Filling up with chavs and despite the new paint job on the outside, doesn't make you feel you want to stay for a 2nd pint. Still, it's in keeping with all the other dumps in Wood Green. There's nowhere without chavs or with good food.
elllie - 17 Jul 2005 11:30
Been going to this pub a couple of weeks now, just new to the area. Well never again lucky to come out with your life. A fight breaks out most weekends very scary place. Was told about the anglers last week and went there. Much better friendly place and atmospher and no bother.
icklemiss - 7 Jul 2005 17:19
Decent pint of Abbotts for 1.90 reasonable looking Aussie tart behind the bar and a pool table. You could do a lot worse.
eio - 30 Jun 2005 22:17
You could do a lot worse in Wood Green than end up in the Nelson. I've been using this establishment on and off for about 12 years. I remember the "Rattle & Hum" days when there used to be posters on the walls and the occasional live band playing, but i prefer it now. Great pub for watching live football on the big-screen (Can't be beaten when England are playing) and it has a Karaoke and late license Thu>Sun. Busy young crowd from the area but never any trouble. I highly reccomend the Nelson..
ganger - 11 Mar 2005 14:39
It's my local too but the latest management change has taken away the character it had. The previous manager Jez got live music in (albeit briefly), the walls were plastered with music posters and both gave it character. Now it's been sterilised with magnolia paint and bright lights....might not be my local for much longer I'm afraid
elllie - 10 Apr 2004 09:53
its my local, was great for late night drinks as was open till 1-2am @ the weekends, now its full of trash ! no atmosphere and expensive bevvies. had 3 new landlords in the lasy year.. so must be a handful to run.. 2 much sport and not enuff thought !
if u pass by - dont - run by !
dan - 28 Mar 2004 16:25
Named after Horatio, not Mandela, this pub offers cheap drinks with a late licence ('til 12/1am most nights). Good for sport with a big screen and a couple of other TVs. Shoot some pool if you can get on the table. A selection of indie album covers on the wall appeal to the youngish crowd. Like Wood Green a bit edgy with some attitude.
