user reviews of the Spread Eagle, York

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Ordinary locals' boozer a walk out of the city centre. It's real ales come from the Marstons/Jennings range, and Pedigree and the seasonal Jennings Cross Buttock available. the latter was OK if not excellent, but Jennings rarely are these days.
Opened out with an L-shaped bar at the front and a pool table area at the back. Some wood panelling remains towards the front of the pub but there is little else of architectural merit. Loud piped music also.
It's generally sound and serves its purpose, but not a York must.

We visited earlier this week upon reading the review below. The pub was certainly clean and there were two real ales on and both were in really good condition. The problem was that it lacked atmosphere, though at least it was far less threatening than the nearby Brown Cow. On a weekday evening there were only 7 customers in the entire pub so I don't hold out much hope for its survival, especially since there are several other nearby pubs that are so good and popular, but overall the Spread Eagle really isn't a bad pub.

The pub has been cleaned, painted and most of the idiots have been removed. Lucky heather is no longer on sale (she put up a fight though) and the only pegs are in the cellar and go into the casks of real ale.
The new licencees are in the process of returning the pub back to its former status of being the bes real ale pub in york, just need the drinkers . Come back and help the return

I used to drink in here while a student in York, back in 93-96. It was always a bit pricey, but you knew the ale was top-notch, with plenty of choice. Remember the landlord had a big Harley motorbike, but his name escapes me now...

Went in there again last week while on a reunion trip to York, and I was gobsmacked at how much it's gone downhill.

It seems to have become another "estate" pub now - baseball-cap-wearing chavs being the only other customers. My mate (Camra member, and real ale fan) was not impressed with the beer (neither was I).

Place looked dirty, paint peeling, filthy carpet, etc. No bottles were on offer, as the landlord was moving on at the end of the week, so was running the stock down.

We only stayed for one drink, but as we left one of our party, who had never been in the 'Spread before asked, "why did we just go in there?". It was a good question.

Good luck to whoever takes it on. It really is a crying shame.

Eeek. Please disregard my last ramblings on there only being one handpump. There were 4 or 5 handpumps which are changed constantly. Out the back of the pub there is a large aviary with about 20-30 birds tweeting away. However my comments about the friendly vibe still stand unchanged. It's a smashing pub.

Starting to pick up again through sheer hard work. Good luck to whoever's running the place these days.

Visited November 30 on our annual York pub crawl. Excellent pints of Archers Golden (guest ale). Also serves Banks ales etc. Surprisingly for a busy Saturday, an oasis of calm with unoccupied pool table. No 'dregs' as previously noted. Note, the Gents are after the Ladies, as I found out eventually !

This was a regular haunt for people from the University Physics department when I worked there, and has undergone refurbishment since then.

Fortunately, it's managed to keep the good selection of (well kept) beer and excellent food (the chip butties are awesome).

Unfortunately, the clientele often consists of the pond-scum that typically loiter around Walmgate itself (junkies, fences and other examples of the dregs of society), especially at weekends - pity, really.

Does live music and is worth a visit then, but can get very crowded.
