user reviews of The Duke of Cambridge, Twickenham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Bar maids were lovely but literally 8 chavs all around 18 years old were sat in a row at the bar trying to be intimidating
Should be a good pub in such an affluent area but too many idiots appear from somewhere and spoil the place

Still a lovely pub.
Lots more details on their new website "thedukeofcambridge.co.uk"

Overall a nice pub, best avoided on match day if want quiet drink. Always somewhere to sit outside and service good - good pint of Cornish Coaster had. Nice friendly local

Somebody was asking me the otherday which pub I would recommend if going to the Rugby. After some thought once again I was drawn back to my old favourite. I know the central twickenham pubs draw the crowds but how bigger crowd do you need on a match day. I mean you can not get closer to the ground.

I thought after spouting on about the pub I should probably post my thoughts for others to see.

So if you are a looking for a pub with the feel of your local you need not look further.

Popped in for a quick pint and a spot of lunch in my lunch hour last week. Beer was good quality and the food was priced well. Would recommend to others looking to avoid franchised style pubs.

I had the misfortune two days ago to be sat in this pub when I witnessed a totally unprovoked fierce verbal attack on an elderly man by a drunken oaf,a very large drunken oaf I may add, this oaf`s language was worse than I have heard on many a parade ground and he seemed to be intent on physically attacking the older man until some of the other customers dissuaded him.Pleas from the barmaid had no effect on him and there did not seem to be anyone in the way of management in the pub.Things did eventually quieten down.On leaving I returned to Kneller Hall where I had been attending a function and spoke with the Adjutant regarding the wisdom of allowing military personnel to attend these premises. If the victim of this abuse reads this and wishes to contact me regarding any action he wishes to take please reply to me via this website.A DISGRACEFUL INCIDENT THAT WAS ALLOWED TO HAPPEN WITH NO CONTROL OR INTERFERENCE BY MANAGEMENT !!

Nice beer but should probably highlight it's sandwiches only on a Saturday. We walked miles to go there before a quinns match to find they had no food on at all.

Once again used this pub for the England New Zealand Rugby match and also the Harlequins Leicester game which was on the 27th December. As usual we were made very welcome and it never took more than a few minutes to get served.

Funny thing I had never realised that the pub is only half a mile from the Stoop so will be using this place before Harlequins home matches.

The Duke is very much a favourite of mine and my friends and will certainly be our base before all the upcoming RBS six nations matches at Twickenham. I mean being the nearest pub to the ground you we be a fool to go anywhere else.

Should have said that it was in the middle of the recent glut of rugby at twickers so perhaps the locals were all peed of with it

Made a return to this pub after a seven month absence (working away) to find the regulars still moaning about the owners, cost of the beer, condition of the beer, coming second to rugby and concerts and all the usual moans.Makes you wonder why anyone goes there ? The beer was a bit pricey and not in the best of condition but i`ve had worse. One or two of the usual faces missing but the "corner" crowd still mostly there.I`ll keep using it until somewhere better comes along.

Went in here recently for the first time in years.. Enjoyed the front room vibe. And everyone turning round to look at you when you go in. Having said that, it's not all bad, and preferable to say, the Admiral Nelson..
TheGP - 25 Aug 2008 20:25
This might look and feel like someones front room, but I have enjoyed this pub every time I have visited it. It does not even get that busy on match days but they do have a policy of different prices for locals and non locals which can be really annoying, especially when you only live up the road. Most probably the best pub in the Whitton area (even though it is listed as Twickenham on this website)

Going downhill rapidly, owners only interested in rugby and concert money these days.Whatever you do ,do not have the temerity to criticise the quality of the beer to the landlady or you will be barred. Not that she will have the courage to do it herself, she will get a lackey to do this whilst she is not even on the premises. She has however been overheard discussing the fact that the previous landlady is in the habit of `bouncing` cheques on her,and this to non regular customers.BE CAREFUL!!

A very good traditional pub, Friendly staff and most probably serves the freshest pint in the whitton area.
Pleasent beer garden and friendly atmosphere between the locals.8/10

Had a great Pint in here today and last week when I stopped on my way to Twickenham. Nice to be in a busy pub but not one which is completely mobbed by the crowds like the ones in Twickenham centre itself. Two great advantages of this pub are one it must be the closest pub to the rugby ground. Two it is a great meeting up point, esp good for me as I was meeting up with friends from Wolverhampton.

They even have a pickled egg eating competi tion, unfortunately the greaseball wasnt as good as he thought. However it proved that he does have a sense of humour, well he made everybody laugh anyway. The poetry competition is next.Something new every day and great fun.

Sad to see that someone who makes disparaging remarks is unwilling to put his/her name to them. This is a lovely little local pub with friendly staff and regulars.
OK, their "in house" games may not be to everbody's taste, but a good percentage of all money raised by this and other efforts is donated to a local charity.
Well done to the landlord and his wife for keeping a well run house and excellent cellar!

I couldn't agree more. The service is poor and I was sickened to discover recently that the locals are running a regular sweepstake on the next famous person to die.

This was once a beautiful family pub but has gone right down hill.

Initially I was pleasantly surprised.

But on every occaision I've been there since the new landlords arrived...

* They've let the squaddies back in.
* Dogs have been allowed to run around in the "garden" area.

* & on the last two visits there's only been one lady serving behind the bar. She's really friendly and doesn't let anyone jump the queue but the poor thing's hopelessly overworked.

So last week I gave up and went elsewhere - had to wait ten minutes to be served which really isn't on.

This pub was runined when it was run by landlords who didnt look after it but now under new management it is a lovely little pub to visit. They have a good quiz on Tuesday nights, darts on Wednesday and the atmosphere is fab on Rugby days, it may be a small pub but its really welcoming. The pub is made up largely of locals who once you get to know them are also a good laugh and very friendly. The foods good and very reasonably priced. Its well worth a visit - the picture on this site doesnt really do the pub justice, it has a lovely sized beer garden perfect for summer and a good range of beers.

New owners just before christmas 2005.
now a good friendly local with great food.
Club sandwich highly recomended.
very friendly atmosphere great on rugby days, closest pub to the stadium.

Try it you'll now be plesantly surprised.

Beer and food both great. Theres a new landlord who seems like a nice bloke. Well worth a visit.
johnmullen - 18 Sep 2005 05:21
Yes, you too can wait patiently in line for your beer as two other completely ignorant and selfish people jump the queue and get served first.

Pocket your unspent money, about-turn, exit the premises, turn left and head straight on to the White Hart where they do seem to give a toss about customer-service.

Used to like it here, what a shame!

Note to the barman...

W A K E U P !!!!

I haven't tried the food but the staff are always friendly and the beer is always good.

However, I'm not sure I'll go back as I did see the landlords allowing their dog to foul the green seating/play area at the back. It put me off the place to be honest.

This is a great little pub. The food is just brilliant and the land lady is marvellous.

I am not surprised only 2 people have rated this pub, as you would be hard pressed to get more than 2 people inside this pub it is so pokey.
If you are not known in the area, there is not a reason to enter this place.
