Apparently it re-opened on 1st June. Interior has been re-done and the old-world style pub has gone and it's now much brighter and more open. There's still the large restaurant at the back. Larkins & Doombar on pump, both good. Food was excellent and reasonably priced, overheard the chef offering to cook "anything they wanted" for the next table - probably not on offer normally, it was pretty empty at the time. Hope they make a go of it this time, don't know how much trade this place attracts as it is in a bit of an out-of-the-way location.

Purely for reasons of convenience, or lack of, I hadn't been able to visit this pub for around 7 years. Upon entry it became immediately apparent that a significant refurbishment had taken place. Previously it was a warm, welcoming, traditional and cosy local. Now, it has the distinct whiff of interior design about it, with a more open-plan layout and decidedly contemporary twists such as flowery wallpaper on some walls but not others, "comfy" furniture and so forth. Despite its modern makeover though, it doesn't lack warmth, and some key traditional features have been retained, such as the log fire and chimney breast. A vast range of pictures have been affixed to the ceiling, which is an unusual but not altogether unwelcome addition.
As for the food and drink, only 2 handpumps now remain, but happily the Larkin's Trad is still served, and to a good standard too. The usual range of lager adorns the bar. Although the friendly barman denied the pub has "gone gastro", it clearly has upped its game with regard to victuals - a range of very appealing modern dishes featured on the specials board (shame I had already eaten).
It is plainly no longer endeavouring to be a farmer's local any more, which in a way is a shame. That said, I imagine that to secure increased trade (and survival) the owners have opted for the food avenue as the best means of achieving this. If they fail, it won't be because of the food or beer quality/range, or the decor: it will simply be the remote location. A notice had been placed in the gents to say that they will no longer be opening on Mondays - I do hope that doesn't denote a flagging business.

Went on Friday night for some dinner and a couple of pints. Not busy at all, but we both had good quality tasty food and the Larkins was well looked after.
Friendly bunch running the pub, good refurb in line with a few of the places in the area now - but defo retains plenty of the pub feel. Would recommend.

After its refit last year, this pub has changed a lot and only for the better. First, a really warm welcome.
Our waking group was made to feel really welcome, including offer of some complimentary potato skins after a Saturday afternoon walk on a damp afternoon. So, this was the pub they wanted to go back to for their Christmas Social (shame that the ice and snow at end of 2009 put paid to that for the time being). Good ales (the Larkins much enjoyed)

I had lunch in here on Wednesday and was pleasantly surprised by how warm and welcoming the pub was. Unless you know where to look this pub can be hard to find. I remember the pub many years ago when it was run by a German Landlord called Rolf and it has changed a lot since then. It is much brighter but has a cosy feel, very clean. Staff friendly. Good selection of freshly cooked food. I had Salmon fishcakes on a bed of salad and roasted beetroot and they were excellent. Quite a few customers passed good comments about the beer and my house wine was good. The interior dinning area is a number of smaller dining rooms although interlinked does give you a more cosy feel. Worth the trip.

I didn't really warm to this place - probably because it doesn't feel much like a pub. Another problem is that the outside seating is by a fairly busy junction, so not much opportunity to relax. On the plus side, they had three ales on offer and my pint of Larkins Traditional was very presentable.

Remote country pub, refurbished in typical Surrey gastro-style which is rather at odds to the brief glimpse you get from the adjacent railway line. Nice pint of Harveys, though.
