user reviews of the Royal Exchange, Camden

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Not closed or converted to "residential housing" as stated by the previous reviewer - the Exchange has re-opened as what looks like a very snazzy wine bar called "Fake Club" - I haven't been in yet but must do so soon to check it out. Better a conversion than complete closure, I always say. Back in the early 90s I spent many chilled afternoons divided between the Exchange and the former Stag's Head nearby, a forlorn sight these days in its grisly re-incarnation as "Stag Apartments".

Looks like I discovered this place two years too late, dammit. 'Now residential housing', as they say.

Yes, the pub is gone! Closed down a while ago. A shame! The pub was quite something. It was great!

This pub is still going??Or has it stopped and closed down.

A pub that resembles (or should that it past-tense now?) a squat party. Friendly staff, and a pool table, but loads of dull punters with dreads from the continent having one drink but hanging around for hours. As long as it keeps them out of other pubs I guess.

Amusing that the bloke below blames this website for the place getting raided. Like the cops are that stupid that they get their tips off the internet. Everyone in the area knows what went on at this place - the cops just busted it when they could be bothered.

Strangest pub experience i've ever had. Heartily recommend it. Like a very small piece of Glastonbury - in Camden Town.

Steer clear if you don't like crutsies, bad smells and a complete lack of sophistication.

Dingy, crusty, full of pschycadelic tat, but kind of nice. The staff seemed friendly.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the FAME of the Royal Exchange will come back soon, probably in two or three months, we have to calm down, just for a short period of time. And please get back to the Royal Exchange and do not desert it, though there is no smoke there..

What a pitty !! The Glory of Freedom has been removed from the best pub in London, Ladies & Gents, we shall not leave the Royal Exchange dissolve, we shall fight and be there, even without the smell of the aroma, I know it is hard not to see the clouds of smoke anymore, perhaps the place became too famous worldwide, People talk about it in Italy, France,Brazil,Israel,Japan,Morrocco, perhaps everywhere. The most important is us keeping this place with good reputation. The music is fantastic especially on Sunday night, thanks to all the great talented DJ's and in particular to the great great live percussionist (I do not know his name)...

I will keep on coming around for sure. Still the best pub in Camden anyway. But what a shame this friendly, harmless smoky environment has disappeared. Any idea where i could get my kicks now...
anonymous - 23 Feb 2004 18:31
They got busted so are lying low for the foreseeable future. Get yr kicks somewhere else, but still come down - it's still a nice place

How come there are no longer "interesting" smells ?...
Went there tonight and it was very quiet indeed. What happened ?
anonymous - 20 Feb 2004 21:09
sadly the smoke no longer smells interesting. Very much the end of a beautiful era.
Lavender Fairy - 12 Feb 2004 11:16
how is the exchange?
Is BaBa still trying to be the best at pool! and booboo ( the silversmith/ designer) still alive, and as for Paddi well there#s a strange pack of cards!

ON eof the more interesting pubs in camden. Don't be put off by the crowds of Italians with dreads thereat the weekends. The acoustic night on Tuesday can leave a lot to be desired aurally. But a rarity of a pub
paul - 22 Dec 2003 14:27
It's quite a good pub, dark & dingy with very "Interesting" scented smoke, and lovely mosaics in the loo
