user reviews of the Market Tavern, Lewisham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This is now an Antic pub called Suttons Radio. It's fairly typical of Antic pubs, with a mish-mash of furniture, but an overall pleasant drinking environment. Volden Session is the regular ale. Guests were East London Vienna Pale & Nene Valley Egyptian Cream. I chose the real cider, which was Thatcher's Cheddar Valley. There's lots of things to admire on the walls and the pub seems to host plenty of events. Being very central in Lewisham, this is a decent addition to the area.

This pub had a starring role in BBCTVs The Sheriffs are Coming earlier this week, when the High Court Enforcement team evicted a lot of squatters.
The_Heavy_Fandango - 18 Mar 2015 09:59
Closed many months ago, another poor pub.
notrom - 1 Sep 2013 11:16
I thought there already was a KFC on Lewisham High Street not too far away from this location?
Searching_for_H_Files - 12 Oct 2012 12:29
Apparently planning permission has been applied for a KFC - obviously that's what Lewisham is short of, fast food outlets!
flashharry1965 - 11 Oct 2012 10:07
Closed. Windows whitewashed.

Went at the week end. Quiet but clean. It can only get better, Heard Mr X is taking on the pub and for anyone who doesn't know it will now become a place where there will be something for everyone; from arm wrestling tournaments to West end DJ's putting on a good night. It will become a safe place for girls on a night out and a good starting place before clubbing.

During a weekday this pub is busy with stall holders and shoppers from the market outside and serves a good, cheap all day breakfast.
At weekends the place always seems on the point of kicking off and the disinterested staff don't seem keen on keeping the tables clear or clean.
Beerwise: usual keg rubbish.
Only really to be recommended for a couple of pints and a bite on a weekday afternoon.

I agee with Shaft and midnightpoolchampion wnt in her about a month ago. Thre ar some weird fcukers in here. Look like thy have a bottl of meths between pints. Services is crap as well. Beer was very cheap but with cheap beer u attract scum like this.
birdnhandroger - 25 Jul 2009 08:37
In there today and positively surprised. A lick of paint as the previous poster said but a few months on now and it still all seems to be in good condition and not getting wrecked. Also there are some good drinks promotions on (buy 4 Stella get the next free, recorded on a card so you don't have to but 4 at the same time or on the same day, and at 2.95 a pint that means after you get the 5th free it is cheaper than Wetherspoons) and the food looked OK and was very reasonably priced. So all in all a very pleasant surpise, I'l be back and hoping I didn't just get very lucky on this one visit !
nrj746 - 20 Jan 2009 14:59
Now changed it's name to 'The Market Tavern' but despite a lick of paint it's still a grim hovel frequented by raddled old chavs looking for a fight. Avoid.

This pub has some strange customers, I went in there the orhter day, and was not sure if I was in a care centre. Everybody seems to be acting as if they had somethin to hide. No somewhere I would like to take a friend to.
midnightpoolchampion - 19 Feb 2008 19:37

I'm with H_files on this one. It seems Lewisham is in the grip of a slow but probably not so gentle terminal decline, most notably visible through it's pubs. And this one is certainly no exception.

Way back in the day, the Quaggy as it once was, took over from Yate's as Lewisham's unrivalled meeting place, yet 2007 see's it as a somewhere you'd go for a DIY facial from one of the local plastic "geezers". Still it keeps them off the street mugging old ladies.
PigPen_in_the_Fens - 22 Apr 2007 17:48
full of kids stupid kids that cant handle their drink
anonymous - 18 Apr 2007 17:30
marlowes closed it cant be becoz i was in there yesterday and plus they are having a relaunch party this saturday.
anonymous - 4 Apr 2007 13:55
Finally closed after years of downward spiral. Was once a great venue with a ten pin bowling lane at the back of the pub.
DrWatson - 29 Mar 2007 12:37
marlowes aint closed it was boarded up becoz the windows were smashed. (no real loss) its one of the best places in lewisham.
anonymous - 27 Feb 2007 20:41
Finally boarded up then according to Shaft. A poignant symbol of the urban decline in Lewisham Town Centre, but agreed that it is no real loss. See my previous post.
Searching_for_H_Files - 21 Feb 2007 12:48
All boarded up now. No real loss.
Shaft - 21 Feb 2007 12:00
Michelin star ? The closest thing to Michelin about this place is probably the steaks.
nrj746 - 22 Dec 2006 12:14
Great pub on a friday and saturday night. Good dj plays a great selection of music. Danny and nikki the landlords are great people and i love what they are doing with the place.
hinez - 13 Dec 2006 11:44
I have only one thing to say about marlows that it is the best pub in lewisham.

Once the bar staff finish huddling in a group at the far end of the bar they are really pleasent. The market traders take over early evening which can feel intimidating and clique. Especially loud Kim who brags about having tourettes F this F that. The locals are not offended indeed hold her in high esteem. Pikey sharon is a figure of local fun and also doubles as potwoman and table wiper, and is paid in vodka for her services. Real locals pub outsiders need to slowly gain acceptance. Worth a look in for a real Eastenders Queen Vic type experience
anonymous - 12 Dec 2006 20:54
Very pleasant bar and staff. Great on Friday and Saturday night. Michelin star food at reasonable prices and good cask ales. A good locals pub especially pikey Sharon and Trev. Danny the manger is safe but he needs to get a sun tan.

P.S. if your name is Reg you get free pint .
anonymous - 7 Dec 2006 23:56
not the worst pub ive ever been to. not great either. one bar maid (polish i think) was reasonably fit....she gave table service to some polish lads and to no one else.
strange mix of pissed old blokes and familes with kids charging about the place.
badger13 - 20 Nov 2006 13:38
I think the current landlord is trying to make this place even worse. On a recent visit I noticed that they had a raffle - the top prize was a 100 tattoo, sort of says it all really. Also the most recent addition is a pool table thst takes up a quarter of the downstairs space, and of course most worryingly the market traders are now armed with cues.
nrj746 - 22 Oct 2006 18:30

I popped in here with a mate a Saturday night after 10 (23 Sept) out of curiosity having heard poor reviews about the place. My mates who had warned me about Marlows Bar were spot on. Another mediocre Lewisham boozer, typically lacking character, vibrancy and female talent. The place is also dingy just like the street lighting outside. Asked for a pint of Magners and was told that they had Bulmers instead, which turned out to be a poorer version. Rubbish, just like Lewisham overall for the H-File search. Threw most of the drink down the toilet and left promptly.

Searching_for_H_Files - 25 Sep 2006 13:43
never actually ventured into this bar, so all i know is what i've gathered from others i know who have, as far as i can tell, if you're bored and feel like the only thing that can releive said boredom is hurling your fists into someone elses face, this place seems to be the best bar in lewisham to find an obliging person.
dwaine - 12 Jul 2006 19:20
This Pub used to be good, with some great DJ's playing House, garage, RnB, DnB, and older soul. But this was back in the summer of 05 now it's just gone downhill.
Nut.nut - 15 Apr 2006 20:06
The big screen is in a stupid place, not too bad on a saturday nite, not sure about the bathroom tites on the wall though.
Jamoo - 25 Nov 2005 10:23
the dj is wkd, not crap. fri/sat nites r cool, not if u like classical music n smoke a pipe tho! nothin wrong wiv marlowes!
anonymous - 24 Nov 2005 18:52
Was in there on Sunday for lunchtime food which was really nice and then came back in the evening for the best karaoke in SE London on Sunday nights...
RichLondoner - 14 Nov 2005 11:13
Crap expensive pub, only redeeming feature is that one of the Polish barmaids is stunning !
nrj746 - 10 Oct 2005 16:17
Agreed with the Rob, was much better and had more atmosphere as the Quaggy, and I still call it that now as it won't be anything but the Quaggy to me. All started going wrong when it changed to the Broadway, and just continues it's downward spiral.

Oh, now does karaoke on Sundays with a guy called Nigel who is very good actually. For people who like to sing have a pop down.

Dreadful on Fir/Sat tho as Rob mentioned below, aweful DJ. Can actually be virtually empty on those nites occasionally. Mind you it's not really my music as I tend to like the Fox's stuff better...

If ya see me in there, I'm the Fabien Barthez lookalike... Say hi...

When I visited this pub last week and went to use the disabled toilet I found that the mope and mop bucket in the toilet hampered my access in my wheelchair. The bar person did nothing nor could she give me details or the manager.
anonymous - 25 Oct 2004 12:34
agree with rob, the good old Quaggy was the best! But I like the big screen in here - very handy if there is footie or cricket on.
pb10677 - 10 Oct 2004 18:43
yes i agree the
dj is really good on friday, some really good tunes played that you dont hear very often.
anonymous - 15 Aug 2004 15:35
Good bar to go to, the dj is really good so check it out if you can!
Adam - 14 Aug 2004 18:37
Mmmm, another name change? Obviously doing well then.
Rob - 2 Feb 2004 09:10
A bit of a departure for Lewisham is the Broadway. A half decent (for Lewisham that is) drinking establishment.

Average selection of lager, and sprits, open plan drinking area built over two floors. Sofa's and armchairs, which although tatty and beer stained, offer a level of comfort not usually seen in Lewisham.

On the downside it is a mecca for the usual rum mix of the sick, lame & lazy during the day. In the evening it can get quite busy. What truly lets this pub down is the DJ who insists having the volume up so loud that it actually cuases pain to those in the pub. As well as playing hard "gansta" pap. Bouncers vary from being over zealous jumped up pot men, to East European "plastic gangster" who try to intimidate all comers.

Overall, probably the BEST pub in Lewisham, although this is not meant as a recommendation to visit.

Was a far better place when it was the Quaggy Duck.
