Large & wonderfully decorated pub in the Newcastle Railway Station. As my hotel was over the road (& its bar was dire), the Centurion became a short term local. On both of my visits it was rammed, but the efficient staff coped well. I drank Black Sheep Bitter (3.80) which I have had several times around the country, very tasty.

Grandly decorated place with lovely tiling.

However music detracted from the ambience. OK for a pint before a train though nearby Wetherspoons would be the better choice.

Still a decent enough pint pre or post a train journey.

A gorgeous space that used to be the waiting room for the upper classes, the beer selection is great with Black Sheep and the local Black Gate on tap. The music was rubbish and intrusive though. A few tweaks to up its game and this place could join the ranks of the Sheffield and York Tap as peerless northern station boozers.

Totally agree the previous comments, was here on Wednesday night, just before the football and Thursday afternoon waiting for a train.

Good selection of ales, had Black Sheep, but price was high compared to other GBG pubs nearby.

Why, oh why did the music need to be so loud at 2.45 in the afternoon.

Worth going to whilst awaiting your train but not in my opinion a venue in it's own right. The handpumps seem a bit dominated by the enormous keg fonts and the place seemed a bit grubby. Even though it was freezing we chose to drink our ale on the platform 'garden'. 8 handpulls in total and we had Big Lamp and Jarrow Rivet Catcher which were OK but I wouldn't rush back unless waiting for a train.

Very ornate and grand station bar which is just the place to go while you wait for your train or,like me,just after you get off your train. I was served quickly and enjoyed local ale though I though £3.30 a pint was a bit steep for this ppart of the country?
The handpumps are at each end of the bar which is actually dominated by hideously huge keg lager fonts!! Access from the forecourt or the platforms and right next to the Metro station entrance. Worth a look and a pint.

Quite good for a station bar with a lovely interior (apart from the naff little balcony over the external door to house a DJ or something). Three or four cask ales, the one I sampled was well kept.

Interesting refrubed station bar in Central station. Last stop before getting the train. Busy with crowds watching the rugby. Ale was decent enough.

Fabulously restored tiled gin palace. However, the prices are exhorbitant and why the management have removed the huge, ornately-carved seperating unit from behind the bar is an absolute mystery. Nicest sampled on a quiet afternoon - gets rammed on weekend nights, with appalling music to boot.

Visited yesterday morning, only one real ale on, a Wylam beer, in good condition served by the campest barman imaginable, not really sure why this establishment is in the good beer guide, no choice although a great preserved interior. Would only visit it again if I had 10 mins to waqit for a train.

I can only echo the sentiments of the previous poster.

The management have a few questions to answer:

I was in the pub on Saturday 5 March - the real ale available was reduced to Theakstons Mild before 12:45. Nobody bothered orinterested to even explain why the barrels were not being replaced to meet obvious demand

There were more staff on hand before the pre-match rush c 12:30 - two of them disappeared by this time for their break leaving three staff to deal with the masses.

Needless to say my group went elsewhere after the game.

Extremely poor in view of previous enjoyable visits to Newcastle.

Was very disappointed in this pub on our lunchtime visit yesterday. Only one real ale was available alongside the mass marketed lagers. Theakston Mild was the extent of the real ale range with no real cider either. Deuchars and Black Sheep pumps were both covered and other clips were turned round. The beautiful tiled interior is to be admired. But sadly the drinks selection is not.

One of the most impressive station pubs in the country but 3.10 for Black Sheep bitter?? In Newcastle??? Wouldn't pay that much when you get off the train at Kings Cross.

Consett White Hot, Deuchars, Black Sheep bitter, Jarrow Rivet Catcher, Mordue Workie Ticket. Very good pub for a station and atmospheric.

What a treasure in such an unlikely setting. Coming from London where all the major station pubs are Wetherthings or rip off imitations of the bar from "Star Wars" complete down to customers this is a very nice surprise. Down south this place would be ruined in a day.
Seven seperate real ales on, samplers on offer and the guys behind the ramp offer some good suggestions, a little on the dear side for up here but most people in a railway station bar are only killing a short amount of time. A particular surprise was one of the local beers with a touch of chili, just a hint but enough to warm you up. Jarrow brewery was to the fore, but all ales were well-kept and presented and the licensee obviously knows how to treat his cellar. I managed four seperate ales in an hour and reluctantly dragged myself away to get the train. Jarrow beer Rivet Catcher is still on and still good!
Bar itself is splendid in architecture, there obviously a lot of good British history here, all in all a relaxing atmosphere, apart from the pinball machine (not working), and all in all well worth a diversion if you are in the city for any reason.
Well done all round, what all pubs should be like!

For a station bar i suppose its ok. Lovely room but itis expensive. Its not bad for a couple.

Certainly one of the prettiest station pubs I've been in. If you catch it at a quiet period and have some time to while away before your train then this is definitely worth a visit dor a drink (or two, or...). Careful though: like all station pubs the pints can be on the expensive side.

One of the best station bars I have been in - and I have suffered a few :-( Excellent selection of real ales - rivet catcher always being on top form. Staff friendly and effiecient so rarely have to wait too long. Additional bonus ( for me at least) was it has a pinball machine which is very rare these days. Great for all the sport and a quiet bar to escape to if needed. Also can sit "outside" in the station.

Agree that this is superior to the usual dreary station buffets. The splendour of the tiling is tempered by the modern ambience- one large drinking area, mostly catering for the circuit crowd with leather sofas, plasma TVs, bouncers in the evening etc. As a result it is best appreciated in the daytime. There is a smaller room to the rear of the bar, with the same impressive opulence. Usually 2-3 predicatable real ales availalable , generally kept to a high standard but expensive. Not a must-visit but you can certainly do worse whilst waiting for your train.

And great beer as well. What a place to get anaesthetised before braving the dirty trains.
Gerremin - 15 Apr 2009 17:24
Great train station bar in what used to be the 1st class lounge. The ornate tiling has been fully restored & lifts this bar way above the usual train station dross.
