I actually quite like this pub (The Duchess). It's on the high street so handy for lunch and a quick beer (to be honest it serves Rekorderlig on tap, so I usually have a couple of them, sorry).

The beer selection is fine, the food is decent (if not stunning), but mostly the customers cover a wide age range so that everyone feels comfortable (I tend to go in there during the day, occasionally on a Saturday the evening before 10PM).

The pub used to be much busier and noisier years ago, but seems much quieter now. The odd stag/hen do passes through, but for a town centre pub it feels quite relaxed.

Had six GK beers on the handle last time I visited. Looks like they are making an effort. Food looked good as well!!

Now called The Duchess. Soulless and crap GK house. Went there last Christmas and had the worst Christmas dinner ever, bland meat, soggy sprouts and carrots and spuds as hard as bullets. Don't even bother.

No good beer. Had half of the back stuff, that was no good either. the place has no atmosphere. Waste of energy even turning your head to look in the window. 1/10

Having worked at this pub for a nearly a year and a half, i can safely say that this pub is much better than the represenation that most people give it. it is a warm welcoming environment open to everyone from students to OAP's. in regards to the comment about the food order, mistakes happen, but i'm sure there would not have been as huge an uproar as you made out. The staff are fully trained in everything from waiting tables to pouring the perfect pint. Yes the pub has a large amount of the army drinking there but the security there is much better than any of the other pubs in the town. For example, which pub allow 15 year old to drink in the establishments. i know for a fact that we don't! All the bar staff have the backing of the management in such cases. the night life of the pub is as good as any other in the town, and it is a good pub to start your weekends in!

If you are in the army and like fighting other men who are in the army then this is a good place to go. Also good if you like standing up and being bumped into for an hours or two. I don't like it very much though, and the bogs are always flooded so don't forget your wellies...

The pub is acctually quite nice, clean and well presented. Its just a shame that the people working there dont seem to be trained in good customer service. They got my food order wrong, which at first they tried to blame on me, one older lady in particular was very rude about the matter, eventually they got it right and I got an appology off the girl who took the order wrong in the first place. It was apparent to averyone in the pub that the staff didnt realy have a clue. One lady couldnt even open a bottle of wine, they were even having ago at one another in front of customers. They could all do with some intensive training on how you should run a pub, they give others who work in the industry a bad name. Will not be going there again.

The Wig & Pen is a fav place for the Lads and I to go on a Sat night out after leaving the Playhouse, can get very busy (you might have to que for the pool table get it ha ha) also the ladies are fine but most have a partner when they go in, good music when you are drunk. not a lot more we can say,

Although it can be rough in here, the place as a little more character than some of the clone bars.Always trouble, and tacky DJ,but somehow endearing.

Give it a miss if your out for a night without wanting to be harrassed, full of ppl without a clue and all they are after is someone to go home with... many better places to go!

Lively large pub with a small dance area at the back and a kinda tacky DJ in the corner.. lots of laydeez with perms wearing black/lace outfits and dancing erm... slightly bad? A good local in the Town for drinks before going to somewhere better at least. Few rough looking ppl tho!
