Bit disappointed when we visited yesterday, only 1 real ale on, Punter. Not bad but not at its best I'm guessing. Anyway, not a bad pub overall but like loads of others in the area way over £4.00 a pint.

As a regular visitor to the UK from Australia I have had many pints in this place, given its proximity to the tourist hotels in Sussex Gardens & Norfolk Square. Best of the pubs on London Street as it does not try to provide a tourist experience; rather it caters to whoever walks in the door, be they construction workers, local residents or indeed tourists. Squarish main bar area, a few tables outside, music videos or sport on the screens. Cheery staff and a pint of Pride for 3.70, a good pub.

one of the better pubs near the station
various real ales which are eminently drinkable
had a breakfast here once which was good value- not eaten anything else though
bar staff are pretty good and the choice & variety of tunes on the jukebox is excellent
big screens for sports- mostly football
you will get a cross section of people but weekends there is usually an assortment of football fans of various clubs in there

This pub has obviously had a make-over and looks nothing like the photo above now. Popped in at lunchtime. Was served a cloudy and off pint which I sent back. Ordered some food, nearly 6 for a miserable dry sandwich. What must tourists think of "The English Pub"? Sad.

Guess this is the only "real pub" on Paddington's doorstep ... sure the clientele seem to be guys working on engineering & construction contracts in London, but who mostly have roots / homes as far away as Newcastle or Aberdeen !
Wine choice is "do you want red or white luv ?" ... !
Their beer choice is ... well ?
Really like the place 'cos its unpretentious, shows football in a big way, and it really scares tourists off !!!
And whenever I'm brave enough to go in, I never end up sitting there on my own, as I'm always drawn into "dubious" company and really enjoy myself ...

Yes, we called in here on the 1st July, whilst waiting for a Train home, and had a nice welcome indeed, and a great bit of banter with the locals for an Hour or so. Will certainly call here again instead of the dreary Sawyers Arms next time we are waiting for a Train home. Great Pub, with a lovely friendly atmosphere !!!!......

Lively , tv's, jukebox. I wouldn't call it a proper pub, bombardier was ok as far as that goes. As it was the end of a saturday night they were keen to close by 1130 . Its a one square room place, (i think, didn't venture to the loos at the side of the bar) with the bar at the back . Good place to be noisy in.

Was in here with the UGLY1- see below, and several mates. We were all passing through Paddington on the way to a Beano in Bristol. We unfortunately had 3 1/2 spare hours which were all passed in the Sussex. The place was absolutely great, we were allowed to get a bit drunk and have a laugh which, as the landlord rightly said, is what pubs are for. He repaid our custom by treating us all to Sambuka each- TOP BLOKE!

The beer in here was very cheap for the area, Carlsberg @ 2.20. Not my beer of choice, but at that price I'll drink meths!!!

Anyway good bunch of regulars drinking and great music on the duke-box- Barbie Girl and Jake the Peg!

Recently spent a couple of very enjoyable hours in this "proper" pub with some mates before catching a train to Bristol. Made to feel very welcome by all the staff including the owner despite the fact that we were a bit on the loud side. Their attitude was first class, didn't mind us putting silly songs on the jukebox and when we tried to apologise when a few people left - maybe not our fault - they said that pubs are for having a good time. Would recommend a visit without hesitation.

Beer well-kept. Good Sized Screen. Keep out the dodgy punters and get in some decent grub.....

Well worth a visit for that finnish girl who works there, absolutely brilliant.one of the friendliest atmosphere's you'll find in London. The drinks are cheap too.Great Pub!

The Sussex ars is a brill pub. Cheap beer, the staff are great. Never had any problems with them. The atmosphere is good, especially when there is a game on. I'd rather be there than in anyother pub near my house....saying that, i'm in the Sussex more than i am at my local. Give the girls a break, they may struggle with English at times, but they're lovely. And you can see they work really hard.

Thats a load of rubbish. Since the manageress barred one of them Geordies, the place is a whole lot better. They were nothing but trouble. It's a cheap pint, the atmosphere is brilliant, no trouble (well not now she barred him). It's still open later than any of the other bars around that area. Granted the staff had trouble with their language, but things have picked up. They are really friendly. The manageress is the funiest woman i have ever met. She's doing a good job in keeping us lads happy

sack the staff hire the geordies

if you can speak polish you may get served
why anyone would employ these people as barmaids is baffling
anonymous - 7 Oct 2007 21:43
the Sussex arms represents an exercise in making money plain and simple.
the staff are ill mannered, untrained and speak several languages but not english.
the bar is cramped and over crowded.
and the atmosphere is poor in no small part to the staff
the pub gets better the further away from the bar you get with the ideal position on the seats outside with the geordies
anonymous - 7 Oct 2007 21:33
THE WORST PUB IN LONDON , the only way your getting served here is if your one of the eastern block staffs brothers or boyfriend .....if you have to go sit outside with the Geordie fish mongers and the Yorkshire sparkies at least you will here a funny tail or two .....keep your ears open for kev ...the guy is superb

If anyone thinks this is a good pub then the Paterson Wing in St Marys Hospital is just up the road. The bar staff don't seem interested and if it says London Pride on the pump then that's what you should get. I have on previous occasions tried the lagers but I have had better. AVOID.
Wee_Paddy - 19 Jul 2007 07:27
great pub for sports on tv and a late night drink
seems to be open until 12 o clock every night
good staff and a nice mix of clientele - locals, tourists and shopfitters all seem to mix well
mj84 - 18 Jun 2007 16:28
A decent enough place, appears to be the only thing open late (closes at 12.30) around Paddington station that isn't a fast food joint.
teacup - 27 Nov 2006 17:24
Lots of tourists here. Decent brew, but tough to watch football with all the racket.

A refuge from the naf corporate pubs in the station.
Youngs beer OK and a good mix of clientelle - not too shouty
MilkTheImp - 15 Nov 2005 20:29
Nice friendly welcoming pub, not far from Paddington station. Would rather drink here than any other pub near the station.

Lots of regulars, friendly staff, great sports pub showing action all the time on the big screans.... good pub for a night out with the lads, ladies may not be impressed though... best of all... cheap... cheap... cheap !
GIVEBLOODPLAYHOCKEY - 7 Sep 2005 19:58
...and quite possibly the campest barman in London! He's brilliant though.

very good frendly staff and regular customers

Probably the best pub in the Paddington Station area. A friendly nice pub to visit every time I'm in London.
Arild - 15 Mar 2005 18:18
Haven't been here for years but judging from Stevo's review, it hasn't changed much...

Used to live in South Kilburn and walk down here regularly, always friendly and welcoming, a great place for PEOPLE WATCHIONG on a summers evening.
shelfman - 28 Jul 2003 12:17
One of the better pubs in the Paddington Station area. Smallish square front bar and a tiny "snug" at the back. Satellite TV but not too obtrusive, good mixed clientele and not too touristy - has a 'local' feel about it, but the service is always friendly.

Oh, and the little blonde barmaid with the specs is gorgeous :-)
