user reviews of the Crown, Borough

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I first visited this pub yesterday. The new manager is trying, successfully, to create a clean, pleasant area for drinking and chatting – not noisy.
There are 3 draught beers on and, I noticed 3 beers from the Czech Budvar brewery. The ales were all in top condition (much better than in the nearby Charles Dickens, which we visited next).
We didn’t eat, but the menu, and the wine list, looked interesting,
I’d suggest checking this place out.

Super pub, three real ales which tonight are Fyne Ales Creel Ale and Jarl and Windsor and Eton Guardsman. CAMRA discount but not obvious and you will need to ask. American bottles and the free wings they were doing were lovely. No beer list of bottles which would be helpful. Recommended.

Top place for Team Quizzing, the home of TWO QLL sides and the Kiwi Guv'noe opens specially on a Sunday for the home games of the London side in the President's Cup.
Picked specially as a venue for a semi-final of the QLL ALL-London Cup 2011 largely on a ccount of its splendid quiz supper.
Good ale and a good, quiet room for Team Quizzing

Good beer. Decent food. Awful music. Shame...

I agree with the The_Pub_Inspector who is describing the Crown that I know. Always liked it when I've gone in for a drink after work.

I think the previous poster must be a bit mixed up, the crown is definatly not they have described.
it doesnt open on weekends
it doesnt normally have loud music ( sometime no music)
most customers are very nice and come from the local workers of the area.
it has a sign saying no workboots, football tops or tracksuits.

I wouls say that the crown sometimes is more of a restaurant than a pub .

maybe southwarker is trying to mislead people or has simply got the wrong pub.
Also the mentioned "rose and crown" around the corner is in fact a good 10 min walk closer to the henry or the albert, both of which are at the top end of blackfriars rd.

I like the crown, its clean and well kept, it does 3 good ales and keeps the guiness ( my tipple) in tiptop condition.

I'll have to give it a 1 for at least they do serve beer. Second time in to give it another chance on a weekday, but...considering your choices in the area you'd have to be drunk since tuesday to have a good time in here, which might explain the regulars, who look like they've been drinking at the Crown since the mines shut up, and the smell suggests they haven't bothered to wash since. On the weekends, the management must be deaf or desperately trying to drive out the perverts and polyester suits with the horrid music they pump through there. Or maybe it is their attempt at "pumping up" the atmosphere. Who cares? Unless you're trawling for toothless crack wh*res, steer clear and head round the corner to the Rose and Crown for an honest authentic pub or if you want a lively one try Gladstone Arms (a bit further into Borough), and if youre lazy like me, anything on the Cut will do better, even the rather generic Ring. However, if you simply must spend quality time with the homeless, you'd be better off handing out soup at London City Mission on Webber Street than drinking with them here.

Black sheep & adnams on the pumps , new menu starts monday. tv's up and ready for 6 nations rugby in 4 weeks time.
The crown is now officially Pub & grill. no longer restaurant and bar ( as per previous owners)

call in if you are in the area, ale is always in good condition

cheers

Next to my office, this pub is a pleasant enough place for a lunch or post work drink. Big, open and 'woody' (more pine than oak) inside - looks like it was knocked through once but not in a plush way. As others have said, staff and management are very friendly; we have used the upstairs room for meetings on 2 or 3 occasions and they refused to charge us for it.

Food quite reasonable in a burger/steak/soup kind of way and they try to make an effort with the menu on theme days (like St Andrews, St Patrick's etc). Only real disappointment is the beer - one real ale, usually dull (eg Flowers) and often served a bit warm for my liking. They do have a good selection of wine, though.

back in the day this pub was a local gay haunt, and populated entirely by very butch looking ladies

I like the carpet, the way it jumps out at you, crawls up your torso and squeezes your neck so that one can almost imagine wearing a giant ruff. This sensation is particularly pleasing if you are alone or have arrived early ahead of others. Strong lager can be consumed on the premesis, as long as a receipt from the Tesco Metro can be produced on demand.

Seems also to be a pick-up joint - for policeman seeking building materials. I've been propositioned in the gents many times - the last occasion was asked for 'any 4 by 2 you can spare'

Has this place been taken over. Went in last night and ate some really good food from the special board. The place was really busy but the staff were very friendly. Good bar

Alright pub, boring beer, a cosy beer garden/patio. Regular barbeques in the evening - even if you don't eat it's a nice smell.
