please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We'd been meaning to try The Old Nun's Head for quite a while, and finally got round to it following a visit to Nunhead Cemetery (as you do). Since it was around 2.00pm when we arrived, our experience may not be representative of what the pub is like during evenings and weekends. But I'd have to say this is one of the best pubs we've been to in a LONG time. A friendly welcome, a decent range of real ales (five or six on during our visit) and a good general atmosphere - what more could you want? Sadly, we only stayed for a couple of pints due to having to head back "north of the water" before we got bogged down in there for the rest of the day.

A shocking confession that I am born and bred Peckham but I have never had a beer in the Old Nuns Head, poor I know!

This is a real community pub with a large % of the customers on my Saturday afternoon visit being families with young children, I am happy to report they were all very well behaved.

Lovingly restored pub back to what appears to be it's former glory.

8 pumps, dispensing 7 beers. Saltaire Brewery were on take over with 4 selections offer, Amarillo Gold, Pride, New World Red and Cascade Pale Ale. Also on offer were Sharp's Doom Bar, Westerham's William Wilberforce Freedom Ale and Twickenham's Vanguard.

I opted for 3x 1/3 pints of 3 of the Saltaire offerings, leaving out Pride. Excellent beers and perfectly kept / poured. All 3 beers together priced as a pint, which was £3,85.

Food was being served pretty frequently and smelt good though I did hear a 'mushroom' complaint.

Excellent pub that I won't leave another 41 years to visit!

There's a constantly rotating choice of four ales in this pub. Usually from smallish breweries, often ones I've never heard off.

The bar staff are very friendly and are more than happy to let you taste them before buying.

It can be difficult to get a table at the weekend, due to high percentage of "reserved" tables.

The posh spoilt brats are starting to get a little bit out of hand, but not on the same scale as say The Herne.

Still one of the best pubs in the area.

I visited again in the hope that time had healed this establishment. Sadly, it had not. I experienced the same off-hand service as I did about a year ago. Bar maid couldn't serve us as another customer informed us she had the shits and was still in the toilet. The place looked decidedly grubby and I felt totally unwelcome. How a place like this functions as a business is beyond me!
We declined to wait any longer to be served and didn't fancy the idea of the fat bar maid's shitty fingers touching our pint glasses. So we promptly left.

Waited more than 15 mins at the bar with a skeleton staff to pay my tab. The landlord turned up with his friends and proceeded to serve him and his friend drinks and ignored those who were all waiting at the bar. Complete ignorance and arrogance displayed to those who are customers. Won't be back again. The Rye Hotel has reopened around the corner and will be drinking there from now on. Shameful. I have been to this pub several times. They just don't seem to care!

Mock-Tudor style gastro pub located on Nunhead Green. Seems a bit out of place with surroundings but a safe haven from what looks like some dodgy pubs nearby. Interior is wood pannelled with a modern look - prints, sofas and chill-out music playing etc. Early evening mid-week it was very quiet but lots of activities advertised for other times including an Autumn Beer Festival. Good selection of beers, lagers, wines etc. Quantock Brewery Sunraker was very good if a bit on the expensive side - 3.30.

Food menu extensive but pricey. However, ingredients appear to be of top quality with produce sourced from Borough Market and direct from farms. Couldn't judge quality of meals as dididn't eat or see any food coming out of kitchen.

Looked like somewhere you could spend an hour or two relaxing and would certainly visit again if in the area.

Slightly upmarket pub attracting middle class couples and families. Football was showing on the TV in the corner. Ambient music was being played. The walls are wood panelled. Beers available were Hopback Summer Lightning, TT Landlord and a World Cup themed beer called Football Fever. The Aspalls cider pump was misleading, as the draught cider was in fact Strongbow. Aspalls was however available in bottles. The pub has a good selection of spirits.

"There is another pub across the green called the Man of Kent which does not feature on this site - that one I would steer well clear of as it seems to be home the SE London pikey element."
As an ocasional user of the Man of Kent I strongly object to this description. I have many criticisms of the licensee but the customers are somewhat above "pikey". If you only go to watch football you can expect the violent subspecies that football attracts. Otherwise they are standard working class drinkers in an old fashioned working class pub.
Regarding the Nun's Head, it used to look like a pub but some yearsago went down the gastro route with the trendy minimalist
deco, bad acoustics and high prices like a clone of Lordship Lane.

You are quite correct.

Mostly Irish-wannabe-Celtic supporting pikeys to boot.

A pub in a part of London that is normally well off my beaten track but was in here for a football match last week. A single U shaped bar with chairs and tables scattered around and some of the despised sofas off to the left which also appeared to be the main footy watching area.

Clientele and pub itself were perfectly acceptable and the food that was being served looked very good (although I didn't eat). It's fine for the area but not worth making a special effort for.

Great pub - nice relaxed atmosphere - yep, it's got a bit of that 'gastro-pub'feel, but not too much. Two distinct but connected areas- one more for food, one more sofa / relaxed with large Sky Sports screen. Nicely decorated without being overly fancy. Live music is ok, a bit hit and miss at times. It's the kind of pub you could happily take a book / paper and sit in a corner with a pint and read but also go with a group for a night out - achieves a good balance.

Food here is consistently good. Doesn't try to be too clever, but good, well cooked staples, very good sized portions (almost embarrasingly large) and at a reasonable price.

Selection and rotation of beers can't be faulted - they keep a good cellar.

Dog and child friendly as well.

Not quite my closest pub, but the one I'm more than happy to walk a bit further to get to.

Agree with one of the earlier comments, about mixing the music and sport, they pull it off very well. Very nice pub all in all, and seem to have different beers on tap every weekend, have eaten twice there, one roast and a full english on saturday, both excellent. Highly recommended!

Why do these places think that sofas & low tables are comfortable in a pub, and how do they make money from the glass-of-orange-will-last-me-all-match types that this stylee attracts? That said, the other side did have better wooden tables & chairs and there were four ales on incl Spitfire & Everards Sunchaser, albeit 3.10.

Very good - you could compare it directly with the Dolphin in Sydenham and it would win on every count - particularly beer quality and cosiness.

Cool pub. We go most Sunday afternoons. One half of pub has live music ... some weeks keyboard jazz, other weeks a fiddler and guitarist combo. Very chilled out, with a lot of families dining.

At the other end of the pub are people relaxing and reading Sunday papers or watching the football on SKY.

Only pub I've ever been to, that manages to successfully mix live music/live football/Sunday lunches. Strange, but it does work.

Aspall's cider available in 500ml bottles is also very nice. 4, but worth the little bit extra.
