Friendly and large Wetherspoon/Lloyds No 1 pub.Good choice of real ales and about 40p a pint cheaper then the nearby Moon In The Square.Busy lunch times but very noisy at weekends with loud music and loads of stag and hen parties.

This lack of common sense (only putting an 'out of order' sign on the actual door of a malfunctioning toilet - often obscurely located on a different floor) is annoying and frequently occurs in Wetherspoons.

People have to make pointless treks - because of the sheer ineptitude of management. Unspecified/closed toilets are a frequent occurrence here at the Shelley.

On Saturday, one of the two gents toilets was out of order. Fair enough.

But, bearing in mind, it was at the every far side of this large pub and down two flights of stairs - it might well have been a good idea - to place an 'out of order' sign in a more prominent position, (instead of only on the toilet door itself).

This would have saved customers (hundreds of them!) making the trip to the toilet - and down the two flights of stairs, and up again; to begin their trip to the other toilet at the far side of the pub - and down two more flights of stairs.

Our suggestion was ignored and on Saturday, several hundred chaps made this wasted journey. Maybe on Sunday (and later?), as well. Sad that the management are unable to think on their feet.

Oddly shaped 'Spoons/LLoyds bar but the beer was fine and that's about it!

Good sized Lloyd bar which was bouncing, although there was a quieter area to sit in. Good selection of ales. No complaints. Had a few visits in here through the weekend.

Beer ok, servive iffy. Seemed to be a slapdash attitude around the place.

Much better than the 'Moon in the Square'. It's not as busy and the staff seem keener to serve. It's a Loyds so it is a tad loud. The only downside is that they serve in plastic at night.

Busy lunchtime but service was speedy. Not an exceptional Wetherspoons and looking rather grubby.

Found this pub ok. Very nice decor, a lloyds bar. Plenty of ales on but badly pulled sometimes. A busy place of an evening. Toilets were clean and the staff were ok , there was a trainee on when we visited who served us, so maybe she should be better at pulling pints soon?
Agree with the other revue about the coffee brigade. Worth a visit. All life passes by the large windows!

Guest beers often in poor condition. A lot of people seem to use it for the wifi

One of the better 'Spoons places. A little bit off the main area. Surprisingly quick bar service for 'Spoons, even on a Saturday night. Usual Spoons menu and ales etc. Worth a visit.

Staff more attentive than in the sister pub the Moon in the Square with a good mix of clientele.

According to the local paper, the Mary Shelley will employ 90 people. I found this hard to believe until I went in there on opening day when it seemed as if all 90 were on duty so keen were they to impress.

Subsequent visits have found staffing levels to be more sensible. The multi-national staff are keen and attentive. Thus far the real ales are being well maintained and the prices are only slightly more expensive than the Moon on the Square. Even the food is reasonable.

The decor is a vast improvement on the old Bar Med days with comfortable seating. Even the toilets are clean which again is something that wasn't always the case in the old days.

Screen on the wall was showing the Olympics last time I was in there. Couple of fruit machines and a quiz machine the latter of which doesn't seem to work.
