user reviews of the Rat and Parrot, Bath

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This place has had a complete refit. Like other reviewers I gave it a wide berth - no beer only lager, loud music etc etc.
Now it's quite smart inside. sofas, armchairs, fancy light fixtures all add to the atmosphere. The music doesn't give you a headache. The toilets are fine - tho' unisex, which might unsettle some.
Most importantly, they have some good beer on offer. Doombar, which I'm partial to and some Czech lagers served in the appropriate glasses. A good selection of spirits, can't vouch for the wine.
The food menu looks pretty good, tho' I've not tried it yet.
Upstairs are 2 big screens which can show different games, so handy for football watchers.
I can't think of much negative to say. No garden for smokers. And perhaps a little more pricey than some - 2.95ish for the Doombar, but at least you can see what they've done with the money. Well worth a visit.

Has recently changed to The Westgate (which is what it used to be years ago). Think it is pretty much the same inside, but apparently the toilets are better (I haven't tried them out yet though!)

whats there to say, could be a really nice place. its big with a good layout. beer wasnt bad but they are serving larger in ale glasses so it wont take long for your pint to go flat.
but the main thing has to be the TOILETS. WORST I HAVE EVER SEEN!!
anywhere in any country. and theres just no excusse for it. the manager should be in there with the bleach and rubber gloves.
shame on you.
But if the front of house is that bad then how bad are the bits you dont see like the kitchen and cellar?

If your really upbeat and need to reduce your euphoria then this is the place to go. It is completely souless and I find I am always keeping an eye on whats going on. This place also has the worst toilets in Bath. Don't know anything else about it, just save your money.

Nasty.

I haven't had a drink here for years. I've popped in a few times, but never any proper beer to be had. Plenty of screens to show sport, but never any sound.
Sounds like I've not missed much.

Avoid! Soul destroying plastic chain-pub with shiite beer and poor staff. Go elsewhere!
BigCol - 19 Jun 2007 16:35
what a load of ball, went in yesterday... had a pint.. blug. Order some shots and the manageress/boss person started serving me then stopped... served someone else as they only wanted a half and didn't want to wait!!! Ordered a combo to get tough chicken, and wedges so burned they were ash.... As for the toilets..... avoid this pub at all costs, if you are not from bath and you enter this poor excuse of a pub then Im sorry Bath pubs are not that bad!

I'd rather LIVE in the Lamb & Lion than go there (which I did once - I'm still undergoing therapy!)

why why why go to this horrible pub - there are many more within a short staggering distance

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
Then you may survive the Rat and Parrot.

decent pub and very nice staff, really cool new cocktail menu. food very decent but do not expect great cuisine. staff quirky but nice and helpfull, if they were rude to you, it's probably because you deserved it.
biggish_bob - 31 Aug 2006 18:58
Most members of staff are rude only a few that are nice.

toilets down stairs smell like they are never clean

tables are left sticky most of the night!!!!

empty glasses never seem to be cleared away till theres no room for any more!!!!!!

best avoid it on a night out!!!!!

I agree with previous posts, very rude staff who don't seem interested in the customers. Food was average. Would not visit again.
bathforever - 17 Apr 2006 17:40

Once you get in there, you'll never leave, as you'll stick to the floor, the bit that's not crowded with broken glass anyway.
MCC - 11 Nov 2005 22:47
Staff seemed to be awfully rude on a recent visit - best avoided if in the Bath area

This place used to be a nice little bar called the Westgate - They obliterated it with the chain pub. Food and service in here is pretty atrocious so I would avoid - Go over the road to the Grapes.
TheGP - 10 Aug 2004 15:08
I found the food very good, although if you're after fine cuisine you're in the wrong place! However, I have to say I've always found the staff (usually on a Monday night) pretty terrible - slow, sullen and more interested in chatting than serving! Haven't been for a few months though, so perhaps things have improved recently.
Karen - 12 May 2004 16:03
The standard at this pub has improved imensley, whereas last year it was not up to scratch this past few months everything has been enjoyable and food has been gr8, well done guys!
toni - 16 Feb 2004 10:52
I HAVE TO SAY AS A REGULAR CUSTOMER TO THIS PUB, I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS WITH EITHER THE FOOD OR DRINK AND THINK THEY ARE TO A GOOD STANDARD. I'D ALSO LIKE TO ADD THAT THE ATMOSPHERE IN THIS PUB PARTICULARLY IN THE EVENINGS IS VERY GOOD AND MAKES A GREAT PLACE TO START YOUR EVENING OUT.
LAURA - 19 Nov 2003 10:17
unfortunately the food has been repeatedly cold here.the staff and atmosphere is what drags me back but after experiencing yet another cold meal and dirty glass it may be a while before i return again.
Debbie Ashton - 23 Aug 2003 18:34
The beer was terrible. The food was worse, yet, but the service was adequate. That's just the high points. I'd never been to a Rat & Parrot, but if this is any indication, never again. The good news is that the food kept me from getting a hangover, since I had no desire to drink anything more.
martineaux - 28 Jul 2003 13:23
I used to be the 2nd chef here but left to become the kitchen manager at the R & P Woking ( also on this site ), I would like to say that the staff and management are great and the food is of a high standard, and it was a pleasure working with ya all, especially Mike, Harry & Rachel.
