Looking sad, and still shut.

Would cost a lot to bring back, from the dead...

Nice olde world pub, well worth stopping of for a pint.
Right by Dorking brewery.

When in Dorking there is no other pub for me. Friendly, great service easy parking, excellent food, comfortable, relaxed and Rugby on the TV not football!! At first sight the food looks expensive but the portions are large, the food very high quality and well cooked. The local high class butcher was delivering as we left after a long lunch.

Great pub, great staff.

This is a very friendly pub with a relaxed atmosphere. I am not a local boy but always feel welcome. Please note that so called Oyks are actually normal guys having beers after work, so dont make asumptions on appearence. This is the view of one person who has possibly led a sheltered life.

Located near West Dorking station, it has a fair sized car park in front. The central bar has 4 real ales, including Sharps Doombar, Ringwood Best Bitter and Old Thumper. The lounge stretches around both sides of the bar, the large area on the left seems reserved for food. There is a very mixed assortment of furniture including church pews, sofas and padded wooden wall seating. Even the flooring varies, carpeting in the food area, wood opposite the bar and stone flags in the righthand bar lounge. Seating was generally comfortable and the pub has a good atmosphere.

Fabulous and oh so friendly with John and Richard - the best food in dreary dorking by a mile
lynnsa - 27 Jan 2012 21:34
nipped in here again recently. not much has changed. They still do a decent pint of ale (Doom Bar) and have a great reputation amongst locals for sunday lunch. very much a local's pub, but not unfriendly at that. HOWEVER it did really strike me how tatty the decor is looking... a ceiling that doesn't know whether it's brown, orange or red, in places once-cream walls with tobacco stains from before the ban. Very dated wallpapaer in the dining area. Just generally DINGY and a bit unloved. Given a lick of paint, could be a lovely little pub. SOMEONE please spend a bit of money on it.
properpublover - 28 Nov 2011 14:00
Just realised i'd never reviewed this place. Last time i went, the beer was well kept. I had sunday lunch here a year ago and the shoulder of lamb was really excellent. Toilets a bit grotty from what i remember and the 'lounge area' that replaced the pool table is ok but no great shakes. But it feels like a proper pub and a local pub so i'd still recommend it. I nver noticed any 'oyks' whilst i was there.
properpublover - 17 Mar 2011 19:32
The Pilgrim, grim by landlord and grim by chef! It his pub so he does as he likes, which is what he does! The 'chef' has his own rules and woe betide if you transgress any of these, no food for you! Nice enough, a pub for locals by locals if you know what I mean. If you don't fit just turn around and walk out. As for the loo's, they are plain disgusting! Smelly, don't flush, dryer has not worked for years. Yuk yuk yuk!
nicktheflick - 25 Feb 2011 18:24
We love this pub and call in when in the area food, beer, staff all good what more can you ask for 8/10
anonymous - 24 Oct 2010 15:56
From the outside looks like a rambling pub, a bit shabby. Four real ales, Ringwood Best and Old Thumper, Pride and St Austell Tribute. Inside is quite smart, public style bar as you enter, sofas and armchairs to the left and a restaurant area to the right. Pleasant to sit outside in the sun in the extensive garden. A locals feel to the place but not intimidating. Ok

Best pub in Dorking and a real local

Great for families when the weather warms up as big garden where kids are allowed to be kids and run about.

A little bit Royston Vasey but that the way the locals like it, outsiders beware
Shamrose - 14 Apr 2010 13:15
What a shame about this pub. Nicely tucked away from the crowds but unfortunately on the door step of a commercial builders yard, so its full of fouled mouthed oyks

Walk/Drive up and its a flowery, pretty cottage looking garden pub, very welcoming, then when you walk in all you can hear is .. f*cking this f*cking that, that c*nt this, that c*nt that and thats the parents with their uncontrolled kids in hearing distance before the builder oyks walk in

Kick the weak Manager out and replace with one thats got a backbone to put it back to how it used to be!

This pub is generally a good bet. The beer on tap is usually good, and when I went recently they were serving Dorking Brewery DB1 for a pound a pint. You can't go wrong there! They usually have something on from the Ringwood Brewery too, so I'm usually quite happy on that front.

I can't comment on the food at large, but I can vouch for the steak and ale pie, which is consistently excellent. The staff seem nice enough, and the atmosphere is usually good, albeit a little 'local' at times.

It's a bit more of a walk from the town than the other pubs in Dorking, but I would say it is well worth the extra leg work!
marksw - 5 Jun 2009 14:39
Lovely Ringwood, atmosphere and huge jacket potatoes. Friendly bloke let me order my 2nd pint in front of him as he had a large round. Impressively tall red-headed Eastern European barmaid was very efficient. Tucked away, but well worth a visit. Large garden looks inviting for the warmer weather. Nice to find a real towel in loos!

Like many Dorking pubs, the Pilgrim is not in my view in any way exceptional. However, also like several other of its local counterparts, it is very good, and always well worth a visit. It is at its best at this time of year, as it offers a marvellously cosy little haven away from the elements, and allows one to prepare for the trek into the centre, for those who might be on a town-wide crawl. 3 good ales on offer, and usually at least 1 unusual guest offering. A friendly buzz seems to pervade the place, both behind and in front of the bar, and the interior is rich in character. It has a pleasant patina of reliable settledness about it.
In fact if you don't fancy schlepping into the town itself, you could do worse than pitch up at the Pilgrim for the entire evening!

A wonderful traditional pub. Well kept beers usually with an interesting guest ale alongside their regular ale. Stowford Press cider.

Absolutely fantastic quality food. Not a huge menu but that's not a bad thing. The lamb shank is scrumptious and a speciality. Last time I was there they'd sold out so I had a fillet steak which was the best I could remember eating. It could not have been improved!

Pool table, friendly staff and a warm welcome. Hard to fault.

Had a very relaxing lunch there yesterday. We had rare roast beef + horseradish and prawn sandwiches which were excellent. Great atmosphere - nice pint of Pride - sunshine - excellent service - lovely garden -what more could anyone want?
Dillamore - 29 Jul 2008 19:04
This is a lovely pub to hunt out, good beer and lagers not eaten here so no comment, but the pub on a whole is very relaxing.
Beersupper - 18 Jun 2008 19:19
Heading for Dorking West station (via this pub), I thought I was walking up the wrong road which started to resemble a cart track between a row of houses and an industrial estate. However, around the next corner, there was the pub which seemed to be reasonable place with a bit of character. Nothing special about the pint of Pride, though. (PS - The station was just a short distance further on, but really hidden away.)
rpadam - 17 Mar 2008 22:05
Booked a weekend birthday lunch for 10 people; the roast lamb was huge, and the best my brother had ever tasted, I had sizzling fajitas (delicious), our vegetarians were well-catered for, and the little ones had fish/chicken/chips. Fantastic food, lovely staff, good beer. They didn't even mind when my 93-year-old grandad started singing (well, it was his birthday).

pussinboots - 3 Feb 2008 13:01
Have visited this pub now two or three times. Beer is good, friendly service and excellent food. I will return!
JG1 - 11 Jan 2008 09:18
Advertised phone number is now 01306 880563.
No room in the inn last Sunday lunch time.
Booking advisable, me thinks.

Got banned here once, for picking flowers (tulips) from the front garden. I guess it was my fault for not noticing the landlord watching me harvest his plants while endeavouring to mount my bike. I had in my defence paid him a load of cash for his ale so I thought his decision was a bit harsh. Enough said, many a year has elapsed and he's still there though must have forgotten all about my little transgression as I can wander in at any time and not be chucked out. I like this place, no pretensions to being anything else but a place to go drink and have a nice time away from home. The food's not bad either but get in early.. Mid week is a bikers evening, though most of them must be grandparents as spring must have sprung a long time ago. Good entertaining place, good ale (when it's on!), Here you can hide from the world and its woe's in some forgotten time and place. Much like the landlords cranium.
nicktheflick - 23 Aug 2007 18:16
Good pub, good food and good people running it!!
I will be in for a cider sometime. Guess who.
Fatsdomino - 7 Aug 2007 15:31
so tucked away you'd have to be a local, use Dorking west station (to go where?) or use this site to find it. But well worth the visit ..good beer, lovely food and the friendliest bar staff and owner I have come across

I think this is a fantastic pub hidden away from the mad mad world, the atmosphere is great & the draught drinks all well kept. Great!!!!!!!!
giveusabeer - 25 Jan 2007 17:30
The lamb shanks in this pub are the best around!! The cider and atmosphere are great. I want more of these pubs
ambajd - 22 Oct 2006 21:15
A good range of beers, including Old Thumper, and a varied mix of people makes for a good atmosphere - exactly how a pub should be.
GGG - 2 Oct 2006 16:25
Surprisingly nice food and drink.
p.death - 15 Jul 2006 12:06
A fantastic quirky little one bar pub full of atmosphere. Has a no TV policy, hosts a variety of odd events under the banner 'the culture conspiracy. Ian the manager has made a real effort to turn this pub around in the last year. You can order take aways to the pub and they will provide plates etc. Bring your own CD's and they 'might' get played
eziorgod - 24 Apr 2006 11:33
Hooray! What a find. The Pilgrim is a great pub. Really friendly, decent cider (Stowford Press 2.50), pool table and FANTASTIC food! I recommend the Lamb Shank!
goosegog - 21 Nov 2005 15:26
Great food, i mean GREAT FOOD! the landlord Tricky does the food which makes it so good, top place for a meal
drpressure - 28 Oct 2005 15:29
A tad expensive at 3 for a Guinness. Seems to attract a slightly older crowd during the week but may be different weekends

Will2 - 22 Apr 2005 11:09
Watch out for the assholes apparently. Interestingly decorated pub. Seemed alright though you never know what kind of late night entertainment they have. Also there is a signpost for it down the road where it isnt actually located. Why?, one asks
aleman - 22 Apr 2005 01:09
Best pub in Dorking by a mile!! Excellent food, great staff and a good selection of beers as well! Great mix of people, young and old and always has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere unlike some of the pubs in the town centre. Cannot find a fault with this pub at all - just wish I lived closer by, tho' I would probably be there every night!
A.P. - 17 Nov 2004 11:22
Yes, this is a great pub, the beer is great and very friendly staff. I went there last week after not going for a while. But now it will be the first pub in Dorking that I would think of if I was going out.
Gareth - 14 Nov 2004 18:31
was this pub once called the station inn? if so landlord in 1881 was my great great grandfather
valerie - 28 Oct 2004 19:44
the best pub in dorking. good staff, good food, good beer, what more do you want. no other pub in dorking come close to this pub.
dan brown - 18 Oct 2004 11:37
A great place which used to be my local watering hole.

Excellent food, great beer, and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The beer garden to the side of the pub is great on long summer evenings.

If you visit Dorking, go here!
Tom Booze - 23 Sep 2004 22:09
A real traditional public house. The food is excellent - large portions and it is very good value for money! The landlord will always make you feel welcome and the South African couple who work behind the bar, are incredibly friendly and very efficient. A wide range of people frequent this pub from builders to business executives and this makes for the special, friendly atmosphere. One of the better pubs in Dorking and be warned at the weekends, tables have to be booked in advance for the restaurant. All in all, The Pilgrim deserves a 11/10!!!
Scooter - 12 Jun 2004 10:03
Cosy little pub full of charm and truly excellent food. Must book to get in on weekends. Beer is fine and the landlord is one of Dorkings true characters. Lovely large safe garden ideal for kids in the summer
marky - 7 Apr 2004 16:12
Excellent food and well kept beer -- what more could you ask from a pub?? A little of the beaten track near the business park, warehouses and Dorking West Station. People who frequent this place are quite friendly and this makes a welcome change from the pubs in Dorking town centre!
Dorking Dave - 1 Sep 2003 15:36
We stayed at the Pilgrim recently and although their food was good, I was disappointed by the B&B facilities. The bathrooms were not particularly clean, there was an old kettle on the floor of the room, a few teabags, but no milk cartons or cups! We paid 30 per person and I do not think this represented good value for money.
Caroline Cross - 1 Sep 2003 15:33
This is a fine local pub tucked away by Dorking West Station. Good food too!
