I went to this pub yesterday, as I was visiting friends in the area. I was looking for a pub to have a relaxing drink and read my paper. I ordered a Doom Bar from a very disinterested barman. althought this appears to be a place predominantly for eating you can just sit down and have a drink. I really felt the whole atmosphere was stuffy and pretentious. Where the fact I was having a beer and reading a paper @ 12.30 made me some kind of social pariah.
I'm not from this part of London, so maybe i caught it on a bad day, but if i was in the same situation in the future. Then this is not a place I would look to frequent (shame given the location).

This place is in a fantastic location and it is a massive shame that it isnt a nice old boozer rather than a pretentious caf/bar. The barman was slightly snooty and my Pride was barely drinkable, but I stayed to finish it as the patio area by the canal is fantastic. Guinness, Stella and some premium lagers are also available, but the other customers seemed to all be drinking coffee which was quite pungent. There is a plasma screen on the wall above an impressive contemporary open fire.

This is the sort of place Id take the wife for lunch on a nice summers day and not the sort of place Id go for a beer.

Has anyone been in here for a while? I haven't been in for a couple of years because, like the other reviewers, I experienced such shockingly arrogant and slow service that I vowed never to return. That said, it's a damn good spot, so we can always pray for better. Seems to be owned by a restaurant group now according to their website. Doesn't bode well that beer is listed with snacks (cf all other drinks having their own section), though it does mention HSB along with Pride.

Did this used to be called the Paddington Stop??

Echo others, poor service (very very slow), pestered to finish and move off after paid, very overpriced (15 for a small steak and handful of chips!) and not that good either. Great location spoiled by the pub itself. Could have been so much nicer. 3 from me...

This week, on a lovely, early summer's walk along the canal with my girlfriend, we chanced upon this joint. Heaving with godless poseurs drinking rose and hiding behind over-sized sunglasses. Got a pint of Becks Vier and mooched outside. Almost immediately the pygmy bullyboy acting as security told us where we couldn't stand. We then proceeded to watch the 'door policy'. It seemed pretty random. In spite of the fact that there was ample seating inside and even some spaces outside, I watched the bully expressly exclude two black guys whilst the (white) yuppies slipped in. I guess he must have twigged this looked odd, so he then stopped a puzzled white couple. We drank up double quick and scarpered. Disgusting. As Groucho Marx said, 'I wouldn't want to be a member of a club that would have me as a member.'

Its in a great location. Little venice, but, the service and the bar staff were unskilled slow and unfriendly, moreover the manager in the main restaurant was so rude. They over-price everythings and they havd very very bad wine Ill never ever come again!!!

I went here yesterday evening with 4 girlfriends. The pub is a modern gastro, with a compact drinks and restaurant terrace, with a clean and chucky wood inside-decor. The location is great, so it was a shame about the bar staff and customers- we had a v disappointing experience. The manager in the main restaurant was so rude we left without even ordering any food- taking our money elsewhere. The bar staff were so slow and unfriendly we only bothered with one drink and the customer base is v 'Hoxton-esque' champagne drinking, 'over-paying for bad wine' drinking trendies. Say no more!

Service in the restaurant is terrible,
Food overpriced & slow.
Bar service OK
Far too dark - presumably they try to hide what they are serving & the outrageous prices for their wines.

I can imagine this place heaving come a nice summer evening. But sitting outside on a cold evening with the heaters giving it full tilt is not that bad.

Inside the pub the comment about it being full of Aussies whilst not true there were quite a few there. Bar staff usual east europeans, some ok some below average, although they do do table service with a 12.5% mark up on any drinks you order.

Comfy seating and nicely arranged, however there is a restaraunt area probably of equal size to the bar area. The food there is of average standard and above average pricing. Unless this improves then do avoid the restaraunt and go elsewhere to eat, although when i was there the chips were decent chunky ones and a nice bar snack.

Despite the criticism of this place the acid test is always would i return, and for now the answer is yes.

In the summer you can never get a seat cos it is so rammed, mainly full of Australians. Nice location though. The restaurant is quite over-priced.

was great on the opening night... dj/loud music/fit girls etc. they should have closed immediately after this and finished on a high...

River boozer!?,........Thats the Grand Union canal pal,...and a particularly shite section of it, it is too!....If you and Persephone are coming down on the tandem,..make sure you keep your cycling clips on when sitting outside or you're liable to get a water-rat up your drainpipes,....There was also a shocking float-by canoe shooting here last summer,..
kmcs - 6 Sep 2005 12:19
had good times at this place, it's a nice river boozer and there aren't many of them. or are there?
OllyMott - 30 Jun 2005 16:42
oh yes,..its a beautiful setting,..outside by the canal/facing the estates and the harrow road within earshot,...."4 pound a pint ya say Brett, me old hoxton fin/tight t shirt wearing mucka?",........mwwwwwwwwwwwwwwa,..bellisimo
kmcs - 6 Apr 2005 16:35
Slightly pretentious clientele sometimes, but hard to beat it on a summer afternoon out next to the canal. A beautiful setting. Not the greatest selection of Beers but the food is quite good.

Comfortable bar. Nice outside area in summer. Quite expensive. Good food in the restaurant.

a lot of peple had recommended the waterway and so a few friends and i decided to give it a go. amazingly we did get a table without a booking although we didnt complain about the 40 min wait. although getting drinks was an adventure. at the end of a delicious meal .. some of it didnt in fact arrive. we checked our bill to see that the 2 entree we didnt receive were acutally billed along with a rather expensive bottle of wine.. so i would say that dinner was fab.. the waiting was hell and the bill a killer.. all was corrected and we will give it another go, just incase it was just an off night

Miserable and rude bar-staff....avoid!

This is a lovely place to relax especially in the summer months, outdoor seating is comfortable and peaceful. Being served is not an issue if you enjoy a drink here out of summer months or before 5pm during the summer. I would like to let you know that when the weather is good the venue is packed to probably twice its capacity and this would be the reason for long waiting times at the bar. I love this place as do all my friends and we would recommend it to anyone, get there early, get a table and when your getting rounds in try getting two at once and you'll visit the bar half as many times!
Samantha - 13 Apr 2004 12:06
recently restaurant service has improved in leaps and bounds but bar staff still act like they are doing you a favour. amazingly the nearby Prince Albert as one bar person serving the same number of customers and you get your drink in a quarter of the time.
jim - 6 Apr 2004 17:18
very bad service, overcharging staff, don't run any tabs
duarte - 1 Apr 2004 00:54
takes about ten years to get served...
maida kid - 12 Jan 2004 13:01
Full of [insert your most offensive expletive]s. Really.

Service is atrocious.

A beautiful venue, even the council estates view isn't too bad. The service is terrible

This bar was refurbished early in 2002 and sits by the canal near Little Venice. Great for outdoor drinking in the summer on the veranda. BUT the service is rather slow sometimes!
ps - I like your website - better than most for finding a bar!
