Was always a very busy irish pub 30 years ago.Now a Tesco express.
talesofthebar - 21 Jul 2013 19:23
Tragically this busy and thriving pub has ended up in the hands of Tesco who want to convert it to a Tesco Express.

if they go ahead this branch of Tesco Express will be a whopping 0.1 miles away from the nearest branch of Tesco Express.

Closed and boarded.

easystep, mildly Cetlic is fine but mildly IRA ?
HoppyWomble - 26 May 2011 14:58
i feel the way to see the grove is it specialises in being low key which is reflected by its beer, music, comedy, patrons etc.yes mildly celtic,if this does not suite you then you then you must not use this pub.yes an aquired taste, but you will find anything that any pub has to offer will be found at the grove but as said on a low key basis !!!
easystep73 - 31 Mar 2011 13:08
Went into The Grove on Sunday afternoon after Celtic were on T.V. Large numbers of people singing along to a folk band playing playing IRA songs.

Wont be going back. Nasty :-(

HoppyWomble - 21 Mar 2011 10:15
This pub is full of trouble, if you want a fight you know where to go! Im part of a band and even the soundman wanted to fight with us. We got there everything seemed to be ok except the price of the beer at 3.20 a pint, which is a lot considering there is a weatherspoon about 5 minutes away, we got on stage at around 22:50 something around that time with absolutley no one in the pub except our photographer and some blonde haired kid sitting at the bar. We got on anyway and done our first song which went well, then the blonde haired idiot got onstage started telling us to F*** off the soundman actually done his job to get him off. The we went into our second song as we finished it our drummers cymbal stand fell to the ground knocking over the mic which set off the soundman, telling us if we wanted to bust s*** up he'll bust us up. Then the blonde dick came back and started again. That long story cut short... JUST DONT BOTHER GOING IN THERE UNLESS YOU WANT ONE THING.
daverotting - 20 Dec 2010 23:13
mmm, funny old place this. Has a very colourful history does The Grove. When mentioning the Grove to anyone in Merton in the know so to speak, one is usually met with a knowing look best or a smirk.

I have to say the new'ish management team are working hard to shed the old image and good luck to them. If you catch it on the right night you will definately see a buzzing live music venue, possiblt the best in South London on the right night. For example, British Sea Power played there a month or so ago and it was a memorable gig, for all the right reasons. The venue contributed hugely, as did the bar staff who were great given that the place was packed to the rafters.

Only downer is the ale I'm afraid. They need to get that spot on, at present it has a yeasty presence suggesting that attention needs be paid to the pipes etc. Other than that I hope it keeps moving in the right direction. Merton needs an indie music venue. Rock on...
onepotscreamer - 15 Dec 2010 14:21
Went in on Saturday night and was not impressed. 6 entry for the pleasure of listening to crap original bands, and the average age of the punters looked 16.
The only good thing were the doorman who managed to stop to kids from killing each other.
Never again.
DaOx - 24 Nov 2010 09:13
Popped in here on saturday night to catch some live music. Was really impressed with the quality of the venue and bands. Normally live music in a pub constitutes an old man playing on an acoustic guitar to 20 people. Not such the case at The Grove. Brilliant live indie music with a packed crowed and a nice pint of landlord. I was supposed to go with my friends to the watershed that night but We happily stayed in The Grove. Definatly a cheaper option then going clubbing with a very friendly crowd- I have found my new local.
tillythewall - 26 Oct 2010 03:45
Popped in here for the first time last night.
Good pint of Landlord and good music. Could of been a bit more atmosphere but will be going back
jeffriesgraj - 16 Oct 2010 15:45
I have - admittedly - not been in the Grove for a while, however I agree with the recent comments. The new Grove is a vast improvement on what it was before.

The new owners have done a fantastic job of turning a failing, dodgy pub into a thriving place for live music.
bods - 21 Apr 2010 11:37
WOW, What a difference,
This pub used to be dark and realy dingy,
It's now bright and inviting, It has been re-decorated since the last time I went there,
They also have New beers and Ales,
The Toilets have been completly refurbished (like you would expect in a top hotel)
Me and my friends will be useing this pub more often.
misscool - 5 Mar 2010 21:28
Popped in here last night as part of a mini-crawl - quite a blokey pub but a good honest boozer given it's 'active' location. Food was great - chilli and chips was a winner - and TT's Landlord lovely...
Canarywharf - 24 Feb 2010 12:31
It's good to see people rally round to protect their pub, I heard the landlord in another pub mention that he'd commented on this thread after a bit of negative press and have to say I didn't realise that pubs still stuck together like that. From what someone else told me, the incident as already said would have taken place anyway - it was targetted and not alcohol related; I hope it doesn't ruin the pubs slowly growing rep.

As for the pub, I have to be honest I'm not really a pub person but when I've met friends from the tube, it's a perfect place to go for a quick catch up and very quiet in the daytime
bite_me_hard - 19 Jan 2010 10:27
I'd like to echo the previous two posts. From what I gather, the trouble the other night was caused by a small group that had only just come into the pub looking for someone specific and had nothing to do with the live music crowd that is starting to grow there. The new owners of The Grove are making a valiant effort to re-establish this pub as a quality live music venue, so it was just unlucky that this happened there. I hope this incident doesn't put people off The Grove as it is going in the right direction and could end up being a great live music pub in the future and an asset to the area.

The new owners have already put in a new gents toilet, repainted the exterior and made some internal alterations with loads more work to come from what I gather.

They are having top blues, classic rock, soul and funk bands on Friday nights such as Papa George, Alan Glen (Yardbirds, Nine Below Zero, etc.) and Fire & Water, which are some of the best acts on the local circuit. I'm told Saturdays are pretty good too although I've not been myself yet, and a look at the big blackboard calendar on the wall in there shows something on every night of the week including comedy, poker, jam session etc.

I was in The Grove last Friday (15th) with a few friends to see Papa George and we had a great night out. As a previous post said, they won't win a CAMRA award right now but it's OK and I'm told they'll be sorting out the beer side of things in the near future.
themusicman - 18 Jan 2010 14:18
Yes, a very nasty incident on the 9th/10th Jan 2010. To be clear though this was an isolated matter, commited by people who are not regulars which will all become clear as time goes by.

If you check the long term situation concerning trouble at The Grove you will find there is little to none, if it were otherwise the authorities would have had the place closed down.

So what is the real deal? I can tell you that as a transgender person it is a very easygoing pub. Outwardly a straight bar but fine for anyone.

The regulars? Try a Friday/Saturday for blues/rock band options and you will see a crowd who like these styles, not a type known for violence or trouble and that holds true for The Grove.

The beer? Well it ain't going to win any CAMRA awards but if you are happy with something to wet your whistle, then there are the usual options. Prices are ok as well.

The venue? Nothing flashy about the place but fine and and in good nick.

If this all fits your needs then you could do a lot worse I know.
FionaTG - 17 Jan 2010 17:48
I like this pub - It's a nice place to escape my venue to and listen to some bands that (realistically) we're too small to host.... It could do with a second pool table so people have a chance in hell of getting a game, and it's a bit spit and sawdust, but then that's where I feel comfortable on a night off!

As for the last comment, as both a publican and a "bouncer" for the last xyz years, it's just given people something to gossip about... From what I understand, it was a one off incident focused on a specific group of individuals that have since been rounded up - certainly not something that should put people off going to gigs at this venue.

I saw a band here the other week, and was really impressed by the sound quality. A shame there was no bitter, but it didn't detract from a good evening.
Captain_Mainwaring - 10 Aug 2009 19:55
Music pub but not really all that as a pub - no real ale.
rainlight - 18 Jul 2009 14:42
Blimey, this has changed. Always a decent venue for live bands, now even better with a larger stage & sound desk. No proper bitter, but bottles of Directors & Speckled Hen @ 3.50.
Wilson_MacDonald - 26 Apr 2009 11:58

Great Music Venue, also great place for sports though.
Lee & Libby have cleaned the place up a lot, friendly atmosphere thesed ays. good pool table.
staff are quite friendly and Irish barman is back from a couple of years back. good guinness btw.
puregenius - 12 Jun 2006 02:35
Another rainy bank holiday weekend ahead?

Don't worry - there's a great night planned for you this saturday (27th May) with my band "The Antidote" headlining a three act evening.

We play the very best classic rock from the 70's starting at AC/DC and ending at ZZ-Top with loads in between.

Supporting us we have "Baglan" - a virtuoso guitarist/singer and "The Fore" - a great fun 60's/Mersy-beat originals band.

3.00 on the door is a tiny price to pay for 3 acts and a late bar.

See you all there.

Cheers

Gazzer
Gazzer - 25 May 2006 13:03
This is an up and coming music venue well worth keeping an eye (and ear) on, has the potential to become the area's premier music venue. Some excellent bands play here, look out for Georgie Pie - high energy blues rock three piece (playing Sat 5th May), and The Hoggz (play about once a month) - very entertaining and talented five piece rock covers band. Get there before 9.00pm for free entry, it's only 3 after though. This pub used to have a bad reputation a few years ago but the current management have sorted most of the problems and it's much better now. Peach are a good rock and pop covers band band BTW, ignore the earlier bad comment about them.
anonymous - 24 Apr 2006 13:42
This has the potential to be a great live music venue in time. Lee and Libby are doing great things to revamp the place and I'm sure the booze available will improve too. Sadly the person responsible for disrespecting two good bands on this page isn't courageous enough to display their name. This is a great website that can be used to share all sorts of information about pubs all over the UK, including great live music and shouldn't be used as a resource to post stupid comments about bands that are simply untrue.
anonymous - 21 Apr 2006 00:51
Not the pub it was more than 10 years ago, particularly the beer. Dreadful fizzy bitter, but then most lager heads cant taste anything so won't care. However, the music policy remains good & reason alone to go.
Wilson_MacDonald - 16 Apr 2006 17:51
Oi you lot!, Gazzer here from "THE ANTIDOTE". We play hard rockin' classic covers from the 70's.

Were are chuffed to be heading up the bill at The Grove Tavern on Saturday 27th May.

It wil be a three-band night and our good friends "The Fore" (a fun Mersey-beat band) will be one of the support acts and there will be one other yet to be announced.

This is a great boozer and Lee and Libby are working really hard to turn it into the liveliest and friendliest live music venue in the area. Good luck to them and get a bunch of your mates together and come along on the 27th May for a top night. First band on at around 9.00.

You can contact the pub for more information on this and other live music events.

Hope to see you all there - hundreds of you!!!
Gazzer - 12 Apr 2006 17:18
Who else is BORED STIFF of hearing about Peach and what a great pop band they are? It's a shame, this pub always seems rather empty because it does have some great bands on (but NOT Shit and Run or 'Peach' - are they all fruits or something?)- a good atmosphere on Saturday nights woudl be even better if they could get some crowds in there once in a while.... No cask beer to be had, just fizzy stuff, and miserable (and deaf) bar staff.....
anonymous - 24 Mar 2006 11:45
Had a very interesting visit last year. Visited with a couple of celtic fans to watch an old firm game and kept my mouth (complete with London accent) very firmly shut. A mostly republican contingent, some of whom, once fuelled by ale, launched into some charming IRA songs. Not rushing back myself, but some may enjoy...
patsy - 24 Mar 2006 11:25
Peach are here at the Grove Tavern again this Saturday 25th March.

We are playing from 10:15pm but come as this place gets packed !!!

Thanks for your support.

Great Pub. Llive music and good bear. Not always the most welcoming of pubs but woth it for the music!
lemonzoo - 15 Apr 2005 23:03
Fond memories of this pub. By far the best in South Wimbledon. I particularly enjoyed the cabarat from 'Crazy Legs Crane' and playing pool with the Kosovans. As for having your face re-arranged (earlier post)....there's nothing wrong with a 'bit of boxing' to liven things up. Long live the GPT.....
AltonCockney - 30 Mar 2005 16:17
now i'm actually a fan of this boozer, but it's not without its risks. picture the scene: bad day at work, i wanna go out for a cheeky couple.....i rock in and what do you know....they got bungee jumping in the car park. this is bringing me down, but not only that, as soon as i get a pint this geezer asks me to check out his conker. that's not a euphemism.....add to that the time there was a geezer sat in there on a sunny summer's day singing ``satisfaction'' at the top of his voice. Golf Papa Tango, we salute you.

Don't go in wearing a suit, unless you are bored of your face and would like it rearranged. Not the warmest welcome I've ever come across.

Still the best Pub in the World!!!

Keep going guys!!

steff - 29 Dec 2004 22:13
This is a fine local boozer. Has live bands virtually every week, a great selection of Thai food available, two massive screens for the sport AND a pool table! The bar staff are friendly and efficient (especially the American lad) and the pub has a nice feel to it. Don't let the decor or surrounding areas put you off, this pub is a definite winner.
anonymous - 22 Dec 2004 11:35
Great live music, decent beer.....
Adam - 20 Oct 2004 18:59
been down there a few times recently had some superb djs on a friday hope they come back
deano - 17 Oct 2004 13:08
Possibly the most unfriendlist pub I've ever been in. If you are a normal person wearing anything more than scruffs and thinking of going in there then forget it. For example, I went in with a friend and two girls at the bar started growling at her "So when did this place turn posh then ?" and continued to bore holes eyes in the back of her head for half an hour.

I've just moved to Wimbledon and I'd always wanted to go in and watch the bands and play pool, but this pub is well off my list. No wonder it's always pretty near empty whenever I walk past.

Landlord....SORT IT OUT !
Mike - 11 Oct 2004 13:10
Good for watching the GAA Guinness is good. Go with the comment below about the Russian barmaid. Add also the American guy to the list. Very brash.
