user reviews of the Priory, Reigate

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Joules Cocktails and Wine Bar - as this place is now called - continues to be very popular, opening late five nights a week.

It has a niteclub atmosphere, and is where the young locals congregate - after the other drinking establishments close.
croydonpeer - 10 Oct 2019 13:36
Been in here once for an indifferent cocktail served by a pleasant enough young lass who did not have a scooby about how to make cocktails, which is strange as that is what they are meant to be all about.

As previously mentioned the place is very rarely busy and an urgent re-think is needed before it all goes tits up.
kevmac - 18 Jan 2013 16:15
Yep, only busy week-end evenings. A bit of imagination/flair/enthusiasm is required fast - or the place will soon fold, like The Priory (previous name).
wealdman - 21 Oct 2012 00:04
Only been there - early evening, after work.

Nobody in the place, no atmosphere/bored staff, no food, no imagination, no future......

brewmason - 16 Oct 2012 22:10
Went in early evening....very quiet, but looks good. They have plans to do food, I was told - by the barman, on his PC.
sussexfox - 24 Aug 2012 10:15
The new Joules is opening on Friday, 27th July. Looks good, inside and out....
dolphox - 24 Jul 2012 09:44
Still closed with the builders in.
kevmac - 8 Jul 2012 13:27
Opening, I believe, later this month. Good timing - with The Market soon to close until September!
tempest - 14 Jun 2012 13:15
Drove past last night and it certainly seems to be a pretty substantial refurb going on.

Not sure what this will mean for the chances of getting a decent pint but it could be a good addition to the Reigate scene.
kevmac - 29 May 2012 12:41
Soon to be 'Joules Cocktails and Wine Bar'.

Staff curently being sourced and, externally, this new venue looks good.
mandraker - 28 May 2012 13:01
A new wine bar, I've been told.
mandraker - 23 May 2012 10:17
Now looking good - with a new dark grey exterior. Looks like a new pub venture is on the way...
tradervic - 22 May 2012 10:03
For Sale sign is down - and work is taking place inside, with a skip outside. Whether it'll be a pub again, or something else, is unclear.
tempest - 16 May 2012 09:45
Closed, not missed, serves you right for barring me you jokers. Job Done
scooterroy - 22 Mar 2012 18:00
tks goffie for ruining a good pub. pse stay in brighton wiv ur m8s.
randolf7 - 17 Oct 2011 00:01
The sign says - locks changed. Enquiries to Admiral Taverns....

Awful place recently. But then Andy Goff and Mikey spend a lot of time in Soho and Brighton !!

Maybe the place might have survived with more interest.
beerlager - 11 Oct 2011 21:59
CLOSED
randolf7 - 16 Sep 2011 21:50
Gone downhill.

Grumpy staff, no live bands anymore.

Fred
FredWhispers - 3 Sep 2011 11:06
Now, up for sale.
tradervic - 31 Aug 2011 12:17
Is this place open....if so, when?
beerlager - 5 Jul 2011 12:22
Closed again last night. Still no opening hours shown - probably because they don't know what they are and don't want to be accused of not keeping to them!
wolfdog - 27 Jun 2011 11:33
Yes it is difficult to know when this place is open. I called in today and the young barmaid did'nt know what the new opening hours are - or even what days its open!
wealdman - 25 Jun 2011 23:33
CLOSED TONIGHT
tempest - 21 Jun 2011 21:56
I work just up the road from this pub where we used to get take-away breakfasts in the mornings. Without any notice - verbally or by window notice - this stopped and, as said before, the pub seems barely open; this seems to be under the pretence of a refurb - but no work is taking place and the pub appears to have the new name 'priory nights'. It would be good to know what the opening hours are and whether food is available anymore - but, there are many other pubs in Reigate which can cater for us nearby office workers.
randolf7 - 21 Jun 2011 15:40
This pub seems closed most of the time now - and open at weekends, although the hours are somewhat unclear.

It might be a good idea if the notices outside gave the opening hours instead of talking about 'ongoing maintenance'.
beerlager - 21 Jun 2011 11:03
Closed on Sundays and not showing Sky sports anymore. Good music at weekends.
wolfdog - 8 May 2011 09:30
Dunno about the 'homosexual' aspect of the last post - but the comments about Richard, the manager, are accurate. Put simply and kindly, he's in the wrong job!

Good sports pub (Sky etc.) and the other staff seem fine....as does the beer and food. The beergarden is one of the best around; we hired it for an office 'do' last summer - and all went vey well.

randolf7 - 20 Jan 2010 11:28
I believe myself to be one of the more gentile 19 year olds that enjoys a night out in reigate, and yet i am consistantly disappointed with this place!! The older woman that works here is an absolute dream to talk to, but what ruins it for me is the manager, Richard. Please, if your reading this, resign. I'm assured by the other potential patron's comments that you are widely loathed, so why continue to be a complete arse to everyone who doesn't have crows feet you strange little man!

Secondly there is the case of the latest change in decor. I understand and respect completely that the three owners are all homosexual (not a joke, they are!) but the dimmed lighting and pink sparkly balls above the bar? I sit down in there and can almost smell the salt off brighton beach!!

Overall, a good friendly atmosphere if your an emotionally crippled amoeba who likes paying to be openly despised by your local bar manager.
Laguna_Loire - 12 Jan 2010 00:43
You are spot on with your comments, not surprising when I walk past this, erm well what is it pub cafe coffee house??? they don't have a clue what it is, to go elsewhere I am glad I had the row with the vermin bouncers and got barred. Goffy Rich (get the personality transplant or carry on baggage handling on your days off)your pub sucks and I hope it goes down the pan it won't be long haha
scooterroy - 18 Nov 2009 18:07
Possibly the worst pub I have ever visited. No Ales available on a Saturday, dark and dingy with a smell of disinfectant. Horrid food and the rudest, most unpleasant "manager" imaginable. Avoid at all cost - you have been warned!
paulie22 - 6 May 2009 13:23
Uninspiring choice of real ales (although I doubt that was on the checklist for the refurb), lots of nightclub blue lighting and generally stark interior and plasma screens showing MTV.

I'm sure the above points are what the targeted clientele want but the bar really should carry an 18 certificate I.E. don't go if you are any older than this.
Schooner - 18 Apr 2009 21:33
Good for lunch and football (numerous plasma screens) - with a bright conservatory area at the rear. The governor had a highly successful personality bypass, but the other staff are cheerful, efficient and friendly. Overall, one of Reigate's better offerings with deals and happy hours - recently refurbished.
mapwizard - 18 Nov 2008 19:35
Is it me or has the garden been paved over?
willn - 24 Oct 2008 14:00
Garden and Conservatory seem OK but limited real ale, and what was available tasted a bit suspect
martins2 - 1 Sep 2008 22:55
OK but could be so much better.

The garden though is excellent on a hot summers day
kevmac - 29 Apr 2008 12:54
I wanted to thank the owners for letting me work in the priory pub this last year, and as an American, I found it enlightening. This is what I learned.
1. British people are very polite and considerate.
2. Despite what others have commented on, there is a very nice mix of people who use the Priory. Students, Veterans, Retired people, Workers from Reigate. All of them kind, polite, even when drunk.
3. Football (Soccer) is an exciting sport to watch on TV. Chelsey Fans, Liverpool Fans, Manchester Fans, Arsenal Fans, and any other supporters can get along and have fun.(If you have big enough bouncers):)
4. Working in a pub is hard work.
Seriously, the people who work there are beautiful, fun loving, and the patrons are great.
To my fellow Americans who visit this pub, you don't have to tip even if it is the best service you ever had!
anonymous - 24 Jul 2007 14:53
My best Reigate pub so far. Bouncers do a good job at keeping out who is not invited apparently..That is fine in my book. Music ok but not brilliant but plenty of chairs.
anonymous - 30 Jan 2007 17:50
To the younger, more "corporate" pubgoer with a penchant for watching footie, this place probably screams out as a must-visit venue, but for traditionalists it is utterly lacking in genuine atmosphere and character.
Don't get me wrong, it's an improvement on the cavernous grime and gristle of the Castle, its goth and metaller-favoured earlier incarnation, and is, well, nice enough. The garden has been opened up to good effect in the summer, and the staff are friendly. Even the ale is reasonably well-kept in my experience, which was a surprise.
Yet it's still somehow forgettable - and not because I'd drunk too many shots of coffee sambuca and goldschlager (yes, those who like fancy shots are well-catered for here). It's a bit spartan for me - no comfort or cosiness. Also too many flashy Reigate types poncing about.
Perhaps the most insufferable feature though is that they feel the need for 2 burly bouncers to cover the entrance even on a quiet weeknight - who do they think they are? It's either self-importance, or they have a drug problem that they don't want to publicise! Room for improvement in my book.

TWG - 10 Oct 2006 16:32
This establishment reminds me of an empty, depressing student union bar. The scraping of stools, sachets of sauce, the overwhelming pungent stench of vinegar, TV's all over the place with crappy music channels on, pretty young girls behind the bar, clueless as to how to operate anything etc etc.

There's never one or two people who go in there, it's always a clan of morons, like they've just stepped out of their halls to all go and get some beans and chips and a pint, just before they head of to some vacuous night club filled with people that have nick names like "Bomber" "Fizzer" "Basher" "Jimmy" and "Ker Plunk".

To summise, if you hate students, or anything to do with them, don't go in.

anonymous - 3 Oct 2006 10:18
See the tumblewed blowing through here all day now, lovely. Shame more younger people don't see this website and keep away weekends then it would go bust. My mission that I chose to accept would then be accomplished. Luv Tom C and the weird church people
scooterroy - 26 Sep 2006 16:56
Funny, I said I would never darken this pubs doors again and guess what 4 weeks later word goes around I'm barred? (never been barred from a pub in my life)talk about giving someone the sack after they already quit. Like I said neanderthal bouncers (who actually know that I was correct over our little dispute) Miss you Les and Jenna!
scooterroy - 20 Aug 2006 20:39
Visited here Saturday early evening with 2 younger mates. I didn't need ID but the others did, 1 could prove his age the other, even though "legal", couldn't so we were all aggressively asked to leave by the brainless neanderthal on the door. After reading previous comments here I will be writing to the SIA (Security Industry Association) to complain to the appropriate people, I work for the police after all so not what you know. I'll never darken this pubs door again and slag it off whenever I can
anonymous - 7 Jun 2006 19:16
Oh Dear Oh Dear, what has happned to this once 9/10 pub. As an ex member of the local pubwatch committee I have had 4 different people contact me to complain that the bouncers (who I actually get on alright with) are extremely heavy handed and offensive almost encouraging punters they don't like the look of to try and have a pop at them so they can "legally" retalliate, nothing short of bullies. Sunday roast (boiled parsnips and half a plate of potatoes??? is it a Polish cook thing)leaking roof, in my Sunday potatoes and parsnips!! how long has that been going on, get a better chippie Andy. Sorry folks but still great for sport and breakfast when it is not raining but if you are a 20-40 bloke when the doormen are on or you want a Sunday Lunch avoid
scooterroy - 12 Feb 2006 17:25
Get in Early on a Saturday and have the full english and by the time you have enjoyed it they are serving, happy days. Not sure how it will fare over the winter months as 2/3 rds of the "space" is outside but friendly staff (except Dill but we are used to that, sure he is a closet Basil Fawlty) always good for sport and something to entertain most nights. Come and try it out, I dare you
scooterroy - 21 Sep 2005 19:58
Not bad at all - and getting better.

Great place to watch footie.

Can occassionally feel like a bit of a Student Bar, but generally speaking its pretty good.
RobW - 3 Aug 2005 13:05
Pub gets better and better. Now open until midnight Fridays and Saturdays (if you are in y 10,30) reat beer garden extended out th back. I never give 10/10 like Mr George Sell my Physics teacher at Albury Manor so still 9. Do you think Jan and Ian are doing it?
scooterroy - 19 Jul 2005 21:46
Andy or Richard must have read my last comment. Machine changed and I won 75 out of it last week. They are getting a family licence soon so you can bring your kids along for the " top" breakfast lunches etc. double handy for single dads. and don't forget girls Les Dove is serious eye candy. Something for everyone now 9.5
scooterroy - 7 Mar 2005 14:26
Good pub, should be busier really. Breakfast is top notch, friendly atmosphere. Negative the fruit machine must be switched to the lowest payout percentage, or I'm just unlucky? positive lots of screens for sport, music etc. garden great in the summer, conservatory will get done eventually and Les behind is top eye candy!!!!!!
scooterroy - 20 Feb 2005 10:17
Great pub went on a sunday night which was quiz night and was a good laugh with a group of friends quite hard questions for us dumber people.

Also went for Breakfast the other day and was impressed with their portions (and got a free tea)

Good Atmosphere

Dart board gone.. A pub is not a pub with out a dart board

:-(
Ronnie - 13 Sep 2004 16:07
They've HOSED monkey at The Castle turning it into the immaculate Priory. It's a different place, much more a bar than sh*thole pub it was before. Ideal for Redhill chav's posh night out with a new girlfriend!
goosegog - 22 Aug 2004 20:15
Quick update...Plans for a conservatory out the back (not sure if it would cover the lot or not). 2 pints of diet coke cost 3, that's the cheapest in Reigate.
smuj83 - 21 Jun 2004 10:44
Now called The Priory, went there for the first time since the refurbishment last night. Very posh, a massive improvement on what it used to be. Pool table has gone but has been replaced by a number of plasma screen TVs, comfortable sofas, chrome and pine furniture. You'd think it would be expensive but it is very reasonable. The garden has been redone too, didnt see any heaters though, if they got some it would be spot on. I think I shall be spending many a summer evening there.
smuj83 - 17 Jun 2004 15:55
My brother in law left his gold card behind the bar once. Very much a sporting/lads pub - lots of rugby and football matches
Helen - 11 Nov 2003 20:07
Must be seen to be appreciated
The Amazing Winkle - 2 Jul 2003 16:30
