user reviews of the Malt and Hops, Taunton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Loved the place. Everything a proper pub should be: decent good value ales, real people and proper pub decor without the ubiquitous modern day gastlypub (gastropub) focus which has ruined far too many great pubs of yore. Owners, I applaud you.

Now Molly Malone's Irish bar.

Totally awful place. My pint of real ale was appalling, staff terrible and a pointless massive tv screen on with non league football that nobody cared about.

Couldn't wait to get out.

Certainly not a pub for the discerning beer drinker; the beer was undrinkable, but worse than that was the attitude of the staff who just didn't care,

Recently made over as poorly conceived Irish pub ( in Somerset Ffs )
Apart from that its a welcome change to find a decent clean pub serving a good selection of real less and other drink brands.
Comfortable seating. Darts. & pool.
Good luck to the landlords who have saved it from oblivion.
Deserves support from East Taunton .

No longer closed and not re-developed. It's now called Molly Malone's and is being marketed as an "Irish themed inspired venue" ( whatever that means) and comes complete with miserable sour faced bar staff for authenticity.
Ales were just about passable but no more than that.
Ok for those that like that sort of thing.

Closed down and sold, probably for re development. To be honest it was always a poorly run pub and nearly always empty, but its a nice old building and its sad to see it go.
The bad news is that the publicans who ran it into the ground have now moved across town to take on another lame duck of a Taunton pub viz The Crown & Sceptre
They will fit in well there as that place has always been a dump. Its also opposite the so called "Ale House" and the Plough so there will be stiff opposition for the title of Tauntons worst boozer.

Looks half decent but whats the opening times? And does anyone actually ever drink in here? I had a pint of otter fairly decent bit on the cold side but still a bit unsure as I've not seen anyone else frequent the place.

Only one real ale when I has here, much more of a Fosters type pub, massive garden out the back.... Alright for a quick one, then quickly move on to the Racehorse.

A sign outside advises booking a table for sunday lunch, but when I went past last sunday the place was empty, no one in at all. I was going to have a beer but didnt bother.
I can only assume that they want you to book so that they can inform the chef if he needs to get up on a sunday morning or not. My guess is he has a lot of lie ins

No Real Ale?! Really doesn't need any further comment does it!

Sorry, 100 yards down on the RIGHT hand side

Well Mr Arbiter, perhaps I can help. I don't know how well you know Taunton as I believe you are from Glastonbury way. But assuming you know the Racehorse, the Malt & Hops is down the road opposite the Racehorse, about 100 yards down on the left hand side.
There is a carpark adjacent (pay & display) if you are being driven, which I believe you usually are. Otherwise its a 15 minute walk from the station, although this takes you through various back streets.
Hope this helps, cant tell you much about the pub as it has changed hands recently, as has been noted.

I don't have a clue how to find this place!
The map on here doesn't help at all. It might require some footwork I think.

Obviously the criticism was aimed at the previous Landlords. The new tenants are running an excellent pub in a friendly and welcoming manner.
Serving good food and drinks in a warm and inviting environment with the advantage of a most attractive beer garden in the Mediterranean style with Palm and Olive trees. Five minutes from the County cricket ground and the town centre it's the ideal oasis for a relaxing and enjoyable sojourn.
I've been a regaular throughout the last two tenancies,These one's have got it right!

It's closed - Fire Alarm has been goin off for at least 2 weeks - Landlord not paid his rent. This pub used to be excellent, now it has enough lights in it with the intensity to be able to perform surgery in every corner of the pub!! Far to clincial and you'll not get much change out of an Ayrton for 2 drinks!
GP2659 - 14 Jan 2011 15:42
It's certainly not a restaurant, although they charge restaurant prices for basic pub grub.
Very pretentious without having anything to be pretentious about.
Dr_Pangloss - 13 Dec 2008 18:22
Strange atmosphere. Is it a pub or restaurant? Friendly staff, send your mother-in-law and wife there for a meal while you venture into the realms of sniffing out some ale elsewhere!
suavegeezer - 29 Nov 2008 20:14
Definately not a drinkers pub as described previously. Food OK if you want to eat but not the sort of place I'd make a beeline for.
beggarsbanquet - 13 Jul 2008 16:11
Although there is a bar here, they seem to turn their noses up at anyone going in just to drink, prefering to concentrate on diners.
This being the case I wonder why the owners didn't buy a restaurant instead.
As it happens there are better pubs in town for the drinkers, and better restaurants in town for the diners.

Restaurant atmosphere, food is OK.
