I have passed this place on many previous visits to Manchester & kept walking out of some reverse snobbery I suppose. Too grand for the likes of me! This year I ventured in because it was raining & I was hungry. Glad I did. A pint of Doom Bar @ 3.00 was surprisingly cheap & the food was top notch. Friendly service too. Plenty of space & a wide range of customers: post work drinkers, families, ladies who lunch late & tourists like me.

Quite a large spacious pub with plenty of seating and a rotating selection of real ales to choose from. Never seems particularly busy or lively, but perhaps that is disguised by the size of the place, allowing people to spread out more. No complaints here.

Sampled a London Porter here last night. Was in fine condition but a bit pricey...£3.10 a pint. It's OK for a couple but I couldn't spend a lot of time here. As previously mentioned in my earlier comment, the venison sausage and mash is still being served.

A Nicholson's pub that has been tastefully converted from a former bank obviously, it has some nice quiet corners to sit down and relax in. Service polite and efficient, the ale range was nothing special but my pint of Pale Ale was more than drinkable.

A boozer that would be good to start or end a session in.

Good ale and a friendly welcome, nice atmosphere too.

Maybe we caught this place on a bad day, but the mumbling drunk on a bar stool was not much of a welcome. The beer was excellent but both of our lunch dishes were dry and past their best. "No one else has ordered so it won't be long" . Now I know why.

An excellent pub with some of the best staff in the area. Always a pleasure to visit the Bank.

I like this place well enough. Really friendly and attentive staff every time I've visited. Decent range of beer usually in good condition. Quiz machine for those that are interested. Okay, a chain pub is never quite going to have the character of some others, but this place isn't a bad place to enjoy a pint.

I've only ever been in this pub on two occasions. My last one was very good as I had the Venison sausages and mash. This is what the pub specialises in various filled sausages. The real ale was ok but nothing to go mad about!

Quite civilized.

Been here quite a few times - there's a cracking bottle of wine for about 7, and the food is good as well. Its rather quiet during the week, but does pick up again come friday night. I would definitely recommend this pub as it is very chilled out and there is a mix of ages, which I always think is a good thing.

Although a chain pub, a decent place with 6 cask ales available. I had the Cumberland which was well kept and at a very reasonable 2.45 for a city centre pub.
Decent, plain food, again at good value prices.
Handy location for the city centre, worth a visit although probably somewhere best to visit when its quiet!

Nice city centre pub, with a good selection of real ales.

This place used to be the Portico Library and has had most of the main features retained since it's conversion to a pub originally by the Firkin chain quite a few years ago now. Has decent selection of real ales (up to 6) at a reasonable price for the city centre. Choice and quality has been improving lately beer wise and the service has been getting better as well. Definitely on the up at the moment. Well worth caliing in for one.

Had a pint of Fullers London Pride in here this afternoon, 2.35 a pint. Good service, the barmaid even removed the sparkler when asked. Surprisingly quiet for the Monday before Christmas, I'm guessing they're all in Primark! Cumberland was also definitely on today, along with Skinner's Ginger Tosser and something else which escapes me. Nice interior and comfortable, better than McSpoons!

Can't agree about the choice of real ales, although what I had (Santa's something or other, 4% ABV) wasn't too bad at all. I had been lured in by the sign outside for Jenning's Cumberland Ale. When I asked for it, the barmaid looked at me as though I was from another planet, and said she'd never heard of it. When I was half way down my first pint of Santa's whatever, I happened to glance at the drinks menu on the table, and the beer section started: "You will ALWAYS find Jennings Cumberland and Fuller's London Pride," which made the barmaid's comment even more bizarre.

No complaints with the food I had (gammon and eggs), but I was queuing for a good ten minutes to place my order, and by 1.45pm the whole place looked like a bomb site with dirty glass and plates on every table, used napkins littering the floor, etc. The place was way understaffed for the steady stream of people coming in.

Bank conversion with the usual impressive splendour of an interior- marble, pllars, etc. This place has the inevitable feel of a chain (M & B) about it, but despite this it's not bad at all. The interior is complemeted by a good selection of real ales- 6 handpumps on my last visit- and pub grub at a reasonable price. Nice neo-classical fronatge too. Nothing amazing, but all an all a good experience.

Improving city centre pub with decent real ale selection and food.

Have paid a couple of visits to The Bank recently and on both occasions there's been a fair selection of real ales to choose from, although somewhat over priced, and they have tasting notes attached to the pump clips to give you an idea of what you're buying. The pub is a grand old building and it's history can be read on the back of the menus. Clean tidy pub with a relaxed atmosphere in the daytime - have not tried it in the evenings. Good value food is available all day and they specialise in sauasages with various fillings.

This Pub when it Re-Opened used to have a descent Selection of Real Ale but now it seems to be lacking a real choice of Ales so its best to give it a miss

Nice spacious pub quite elegant inside. Real ale and food good

This pub USED to be excellent but after a strict "no in any way alternative-looking staff" policy, has stripped it of all but a fraction of soul... At least Mike still works there.
Luke_Vertiis - 18 Jun 2006 16:39
Beer good if a little pricey but I did feel I'd intruded on a gentleman's club and given the lack of a TV on cup final day we didn't stay too long.
Does appear to cater more than most for those who prefer to drink something other than beer, lager or cider

I was there on saturday 15th April, around 2 pm, with a friend. We took a place at a table near the window and had to wait AGES. The waiter came, started cleaning the table next to us without saying us a word. After he cleaned the table he left again and served other tables. We thought he was not responsible for our table and ask the other waiter in the restaurant, who was standing (= doing nothing) at the bar.

He just said that we were sitting at the wrong table and did not explain us further why there are "wrong" and "right" tables.

Needless to say, we left the place straight away. Apparently they don't know what "customer service" means.

Had to wait ages for food. But they did give us some "sorry about the delay" beer, and it was very nice.
