Sadly another leaving lunch since my last set of comments. Food quality still good but hard to find a basic hot snack without it being fanciful and expensive. Good selection of beer and quality good; on at the time were Adnams - Lighthouse and 2 others

Went for colleagues leaving lunch and very impressed by the quality of the food. It is pricy but you definataly get good quality. I recommend the House platter. It's a meal in itself!!! Had a good pint of Adnams - Bitter too.

I have visited this pub many times and have always had a great experience. Lovely pub, warm and inviting, spacious and light. Menu has lots of choice, some meals are quite pricey, but the quality is definately there. Have always had excellent meals. Lots of choice for beer and cider on tap, they have the delicious Aspall cider,my favourite. Friendly staff. A little gem I think, tucked away by the river in Bourne End =)

Went today, following the Cask Mark listing guide.
The pub had loads of diners and plenty of trade. But frankly I thought that it was rather poor.
The man behind the bar was one of the most miserable people I have ever met. Why do these people work in bars? Why don't they find a job they like.
The very reasonable beer was consistently served as very short measures. The bar staff said that was what they are trained to serve! Topped up to only a fairly short measure very grudgingly. What on earth does cask mark mean?
Food was tiny portions, top prices and pretty poor.
One to avoid I think.

I have been to this pub a few times before for a drink and the food looked good so we decided to take friends along last sunday for lunch, we will not be going back.......

Despite not being particularly busy the service was AWFUL! It began well, our starters came within 10 minutes of ordering but it then took nearly 90 minutes for our main courses to arrive (we all had sunday roasts).

There were loads of members of staff milling around but they all lacked any hint of urgency (one of the bar staff was more interested in clearing the dishwasher and arranging glasses than actually serving customers!)

It was most frustrating as when our food did arrive it was very nice, unfortunately it did not make up for the inexcusable wait!

Wanted to like this pub more ... great location by the river and nice building BUT inside it felt like a by-the-numbers gastropub, more a restaurant than a boozer. friendly staff.

My return visit at late lunchtime today was unplanned, but caused by the closure of the M40. So, let me start with the good news; cosy fires were burning, the Rebellion beer was excellent and exactly the correct temperature this time (compare my comments of 6 September). The service was friendly, efficient and speedy- this despite the place being pretty busy with customers of all ages. I had the chipolata sandwich, with a side order of chips; I thought it rather dreary, and would not particularly recommend it. My colleague had the small serving of fishcakes, and was happy with the quality.

So, its popular with families and groups, and in a pleasant setting- although Im not itching to return next week, Ill certainly be back. By the way, both the Festive Menu from 1 December and the Christmas Day menu look reasonable- but dont forget that wine is not included!

Lots of good reviews so took friends there to dinner on 8th October.
Never again!
It all started so well, delicious starters and friendly service (if a little slow). Then it all went downhill and we waited.....and waited... for our main courses but our waiter had disappeared. Tried to attract the attention of a waitress at an adjoining group of tables but she was chatting with two friends who'd just come in. Finally, our waiter reappeared (no explanation) and took away our starter plates. Eventually, 90 minutes after we'd sat down and 15 minutes after the waitress's friends had arrived both tables got main courses simultaneously. It became apparent that we'd just been forgotten. My pork fillet was dried up and tough, my wife's fish was congealed and unappetising. All the meals were on plates which were hot on one side and cold on the other.
As I said at the start-never again.

I have visited this pub regularly over the past 7 months and have had some lovely meals. Usually I visit at lunchtime during the week and am therefore in a bit of a rush. However I went this weekend for a Sunday lunch and had a fantastic meal. The menu is varied, portions are generous and despite the pub being busy the service was good and not rushed.

All dishes chosen were delicious and the look of another customer's Yorkshire pudding will be making me choose the roast beef next time I am there. Also, the treacle tart is a must and I can't resist everytime I go.

You can also take a nice walk along the Thames within a few minutes of the pub to work off the calories from the treacle tart!!

Verdict: Good value, excellent food. Highly recommended

An excellent place. My daughter works nearby so this is their local when lunchtime calls for a special occasion.

Our service was excellent, but to be fair we had made sure we were the first through the door, as we hadn't reserved. Yes, maybe the beer was a bit too chilled, but there are far worse ways of getting it wrong.

But enough of that, what about the food? Excellent !
A superb range of meals, and all really good value. Although none of us had the Sunday roast, we will next time, having seen a few being carried past. My wife's crumble was to die for - my cheese board was the nicest I have seen in years - and my daughter had her usual treacle tart. Tart ?? It was more like a cake, about two inches thick and dripping with treacle. That'll be my choice next time.

As an aside, there is no children's menu, but they do serve half portions of four of the normal items.

And just think - a few years ago this used to be a Beefeater / Brewers Fayre ( can't remember which). Somebody obviously saw the possibilities in this place, and boy have they delivered.

I have used this pub two or three times a year over several years, and would recommend it. The approach down the lane to it is fun- but do drive slowly round those corners!- and its setting is pleasant, with easy access to the river Thames and an easy footpath.

The appearance of the place has lots of character, and inside feels roomy, even when busy,as it was when I last visited on Wednesday 27 August. My usual comments apply: the menu is varied, the prices reasonable, the service friendly and efficient. Parking is easy and adequate. The only reservations that I have are that the beer is mostly kept too chilled for my taste (I need to ensure that I get the one that is merely cellar temperature),and that it has a reputation for slow service. I didn't find that on 27 August, although I understand that a party of ladies that had booked did. In any event, as well as the two other people I went with I also bumped into old friends there, so all in all a worthwhile outing.

Verdict: Well worth a try, and you'll probably want to go again.

Nice pub near the banks of the Thames. Seems very popular. Seeing a female member of staff nagging a male member of staff, very sarcastically, to clean the fridge door handles while he was trying to serve me was, however, mildly distressing (for him and me).
