I've never seen the middle section tables reserved!! It's always the back section and they advertise that all the time. As for the curtains...the back curtain opens around 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays and around 8 pm on Sundays. The front curtain to my knkowledge is always open. As for the lack of real ale, it is a young persons venue, so they cater for 21-40. I'm sure there are some in the age bracket that drink real ale but surely not high enough numbers to warrant sell it in this venue.

Clean, staff ok, younger venue, food and drink expensive, very quiet apart from friday and saturday nights which are too busy and too long to get served.
never know which curtain is open, so never know if you can sit at the front, middle (which the seats are sometimes reserved) or the back. No real ale!

In response to psweeds123, no i dont expect quality control of glasses but that was one of many things that ruined the place for me. It appears i am not alone regarding the DJ either noting the other comments. Maybe it would have been a good idea to throw my the dirty glass at the DJ. At least he might have shut up!

Yes, there aint many alternatives but when a new place opens you wish that it would finally be a place thats worth going to in our er, um, lovely town.

But once again you get disappointed.

Dont get me wrong, its has got potential but my first impression was "Christ".

I did ask them if a photocopy of my passport would be accepted but they told me it wouldn't, something to do with scanning the ID.
claire1605 - 1 Apr 2008 17:52
Claire, why dont you take a photocopy of your passport. Im sure they would accept this and it will hardly cost you a thing!

All I would say, A very nice venue, yes the service is a bit slow - as the staff seem quite young but hey when a new bar opens thats to be expected as the masses try it out.
As for the Dj, I would agree with the comments below, there is promotion and there is promotion. Every song every two mintues, some promotion talk or some encouragement for the local birds to dance. Maybe he should consider his track selections and then he may not need to beg the punters to dance.

In response to Nochavisinmypub's comments that the music was too loud? a glass was dirty? and there was a large queue at the bar?

So, what's the alternative? no queue to get a drink, music turned down to accomodate everyones conversations and every glass to go through quality control when it comes out the dishwaher?

I've only been there twice, as I'm not big on drinking round Bexleyheath and although its far from perfect it ceratinly gets the thumbs up from me for a few beers locally on a Saturday night.

Oh dear. What a missed opportunity. Lets face it, the Rat and Parrot was awful (and those who say it was good were only people who couldnt get in anywhere else or had been barred from other places). Most of the drinkers who can type or hold a conversation without using 'text speak' were glad when it was shut down.

I went on the first Saturday it opened. First impressions are good. Security let people in as it was the first week without being too heavy on the ID thing. Very flash id policy. It scans your driving licence which i dont have a problem with but it unfortunately leaves the screen next to the door looking like a rogues gallery of offenders!

Must admit, i'm a bit unsure about what the door policy is going to be. If you are old enough (and look it) do you still get asked for ID. Is it mandatory?

Once you get one thing you notice is the decor. Very swish and looks the part but from then it goes downhill.

Firstly, DJ's should be there to play music and give the occasional 'shout'. He wouldnt shut up talking. The music was really loud so conversation could only be made by shouting even if you stood right at the back but add the DJ's laughable rapping along with some of the songs only made people annoyed.

Leave the fake 'gansta' speak to Tim Westwood on Pimp My Ride eh?

As for the punters. Im afraid it was a lesson in what Bexleyheath has become.

Drinks? Well, quite a few cocktails are on offer from what i remember. Usual beer selection and admittedly the prices were ok. One of the girls we were with ordered a JD and coke and had to take it back as the glass hadnt been washed properly. Quite a queue for the bar as well.

So overall, not very good. Shame really as what Bexleyeath needs a a high quality bar / drinking venue for the mid twenties onward crowd.

Bloody hell, what a difference 3 months make hardly recognised the place.I enjoyed my frequent visits to the late rat and parrot, but was more than a little impressed with the sucessor.DJ was fantastic, staff was attentive and helpful, and doorstaff were more than happy to help when asked. Will most certainly visit this establishment again.GOOD LUCK IVORY LOUNGE

Goodbye to The Rat and Parrot, hello to The Ivory Lounge. Yes, its arrived, another modernised trendy bar for the Bexleyheath masses. I paid a visit last Friday (21st Dec) to check out the latest occupant of number 167 Broadway. Before entering for the first time, expect to be asked to provide ID, in order for your photo to be onto their computer system. A good idea in so many ways, yet one which tells you everything you need to know about the type of customer they anticipate. Now, the bar itself. The changes are quite dramatic. Before the change, it was all rather open and bare. Under new ownership however, things have changed. The bar is split into three sections. The first, with pine flooring, has a coffee house feel to it. You could almost be in a Starbucks or Costa Coffee and with the coffee machines and left over cakes and buns on display, this section, is evidently the bars priority during the afternoon hours. In the evening, it seemed to have more of a chill out vibe. Further on is a narrower section with a long bar to the right and a giant mirror to the left, with chairs and tables tucked all around. The third and final section is where the DJ has his booth and theres a small-ish dance floor. There are now two sets of toilets at either end of this establishment. Drink selection is standard, though Peroni on draught is perhaps a rarity. It isnt particularly cheap, watch out for measurements and dont drink the Heineken. It was off. Music was decent enough. I was glad Rnb wasnt given too much attention. Instead it was a mix of commercial dance and modern pop. Not really my thing, but it couldve been worse. The staff were attentive enough and bouncers seemed reasonable enough in regard to letting smokers out to poison themselves. Some will love it here (my girlfriend did), others will hate it and then youll find people like me, completely indifferent to the whole experience. Everything considered though, I guess I recommend it.
