BigAleDrinkhead - 1 Nov 2008 18:15
Fullers pub open til midnight. Great atmosphere, great beer, freindly staff and landlord is good company. Has the best jukebox in town, apparently over 42,000 songs 11 tracks for £2. Haven't seen any live music yet but will be going tonight
ummmbeeer - 31 Oct 2008 19:58
Good Pub, glad to see live music is back on!!
louise82 - 18 Sep 2008 23:08
They serve drinks here if your patient enough.
TheSurreyPubMan - 15 Jul 2008 21:02
A good pub, lager is ok bit pricey, but hey ho. They have some bands on know and then some are very good, some crap!

Not seen the landlord serve anyone yet!

great HSB beer but would like more varied guest ales. Not sure about TV on most of the day...Great bar staff who are genuinely interested in serving you. Nice to drop in for a chat.
foursimple - 16 Jun 2008 14:41
dear gentlemen,i was in this fine establishment not three weeks ago, what a great pub,yes it is rather over the top on the price of ale,but it was in fine condition, and the service was of top quality, the four guys i was with had a great time and are going back next week, hope to see you down there.6-10.
Man_at_the_bar - 4 Jun 2008 16:48
Got to say i find London Pride very over rated there are so many far better ales !!!! Fullers are a little up themselves now a days i`m afraid
Shame
Beersupper - 4 Jun 2008 16:21
Hello Biker, how are you dear chap?

Just to say I may of got the price of the beer wrong, If so I'm sorry Sweet Caroline... ;)
MrReasonable - 4 Jun 2008 16:13
caroline123, Mr Reasonable did not say London Pride is £3.35 - he said it's £3.30. Now let me see, is that a literacy problem or - knowing the price of a product ? As an old Guildfordian, why does something trouble me slightly when I regularly pay £2.60 for London Pride and we're another 40 miles further from the origins of this wonderful ale ! ?

Bemused, not amused biker.
Biker - 3 Jun 2008 15:05
London pride is actually 2.95 not 3.35 like you suggested
caroline123 - 2 Jun 2008 21:48
And across the road from the Robin Hood you have the Royal Oak, nice view of the graveyard, nothing too creepy about it at all ;). I like this pub in many ways, the bar staff are more on the friendly side than the Robin Hood for example. There are darts and jukeboxes to entertain the crowds. One downside? The ridiculous price of the beers. Was it really £3.30 for a mere pint of London Pride. However i'll still visit here sometimes.

8/10
MrReasonable - 24 May 2008 12:05
Yes the HSB is indeed excellent. Met the new manager and he seemed to be a genuine guy who wants to succeed. Despite this being my first visit I was made to feel welcome and got chatting to a few people who obviously were regulars.

Meals are not available in the evening I believe but the sandwich I had was good, and cheap.

Of all the pubs I've visited in Guildford this one seems to have kept itself as a real pub more than the others - the words trendy and bar spring to mind. My only criticism is the price of the beer - this was the most expensive pub I've visited in the town. This seems to be a Fullers tendency everywhere now. My rating is a point lower because of this.
GrahamA - 6 May 2008 14:35
Now has London Porter on the handpump, good to see. Also does an excellent HSB
aleman - 6 Feb 2008 11:21
Good pub this or it used to be its gone way downhill in the last 18 months. The new manager is trying to get it back up and running. But for me its to bright and what the hell is there a TV on for at lunch times????????
ThePilgrim - 8 Jan 2008 10:55
The new 'owners' have grasped the nettle and taken on the challenge. It was never going to be an easy task but the beer [especially HSB] is great and the pub now has an atmosphere of it's own. It is hard to believe the turnaround in 3 months. Well done Bruce and Di for setting the scene and partying like the rest of us. Initial problems that related to the referb (lights too bright) have now been resolved and together with the in house home entertainment system we can listen to Bruces favourites. Food during the lunchtime is of a good quality. Why can't they advertise on the high street like some coffee shops do further down. I hope you're here to stay Bruce. Thanks again. 4 simple ingredients - malt hops yeast and water = HSB!
foursimple - 21 Dec 2007 01:47
Agreed Beersupper, it has in the past been one of the finest pubs in Guildford and the new 'keepers-of-the-ale' deserve a good start. Visitors, if you're visiting the Castle or their superb grounds and gardens, it's ideal.
Biker - 3 Nov 2007 08:47
Bugger off indeed old boy not the said thing you tut tut.
Just a note to wish the new managers all the best ,please get it back to normal its a good pub.
Beersupper - 2 Nov 2007 21:35
Feel free to comment as much as you like Biker

I would visit the pubs you've suggested but they're a little bit far out.

aleman - 29 Oct 2007 19:25
Aleman and Beersupper, are you two running a private chat board for this pub or can anyone join ?

As an old Guildfordian, I feel a decent ordinary (laid back) Guildford boozer like the 'Oak' does not deserve your undivided attention to this extent.

Bugger off and review some other interesting pubs like the Three Compasses in Alfold or the Limeburners at Newbridge.

I will make a point of visiting the Oak again very shortly and either condemn or condone both of your views as valid or otherwise. Be good !
Biker - 26 Oct 2007 10:05
Aleman i like this pub but its not run at all well.
Beersupper - 28 Aug 2007 13:04
Aleman i visited this pub ( which was one of me fav`s) again the other day and it needs a real good shake up its not that homely any more in need of a good clean & really needs a good landlord in to sort it out,or you could send the management on a management course if that would do any good!!
Beersupper - 17 Jul 2007 08:52
Lunch times are totally different to evenings.
Evening is the time the maddness takes over must be something in the ciggies!!!!!!!
Beersupper - 20 May 2007 13:52
What do you have against this place in particular though Beersupper? I will admit i've never eaten here, but i've always found the beer here to be fine. And the service has always seemed adequate and fairly prompt, feels like less of a locals pub than the Robin Hood over the road
aleman - 16 May 2007 19:16
O dear O dear O dear what the heck has happened to this once very good pub have the loonies taken over the asylum i think so.
Hang your head in shame Fullers for ruining a lovely Gales pub well done you idiots.
If it carries on like this it will close and end up a block of apartments or is that what you have in mind?????
Dont be shy Fullers feel free to say.
Beersupper - 13 May 2007 19:14
Stroller took the words out of my mouth with this place. Used to be a very good pub, but has gone so downhill. It can be difficult working out who is on duty to serve you a drink!! You then get sighed at when they have to get up off their seat to do it.. The only way of getting a clean table is to ask them for a cloth and do it yourself!!
thirstypunter - 30 Apr 2007 16:27
6 months since i last called in here and my what a change the place is now a complete Craphole. The bar staff are all over the place ( not sure what the short barmaid was on but was not on this planet)drinks being thrown all over the place, people just going behind the bar to help themselves.
Who the heck runs this wreck of a pub.Keep well clear if you fancy a chilled night out.
It will be another 6 years before i venture in here if ever, such a shame a good pub gone bonkers.0/10
stroller - 13 Apr 2007 18:17
Went in yesterday for lunch the service was great but hold up the food, well it was only scampi & chips but it was yuck the scampi was rock hard.Come on people this place should not have a bad report on this site but you are getting very close to one.Plus point beer was pretty good.
Beersupper - 26 Jan 2007 18:38
Is perhaps a bit close-knit here. However the drinks and the friendly enough atmosphere continue to make this place one of the better places to go
aleman - 17 Dec 2006 00:31
As i said before this is one of only my two fav. pubs in the town, but i must agree with other reviews the bar staff do let this place down .Every thing else comes first other than serving the customer.I do hope this changes as i dont want to be put off comming herE.
Beersupper - 16 Dec 2006 13:28
Appears the bar stuff here change quite frequently, pub itself is rather similiar to the Robin Hood just nearby. Sells fullers drinks at the moment
aleman - 12 Nov 2006 10:44
I have been in here a few times recently & i have to agree the bar service is not that bad,(yes they do talk far to much to their friends )but the wait on food is really awful.I will not use this place again!!!! I would have given this 2 for being there but its not worth that.
stroller - 19 Oct 2006 20:53
I'm not a regular but have been in a few times to kill time, read a book etc. The staff do chat with their mates but never fail to spring to action. I've always found them as friendly as I'd want staff to be. The beer is good, the juke box excellent and location by the graveyard perfect - especially on a dark wet windy day.
HoodedCrow - 13 Oct 2006 13:36
To back up my earlier comment on this pub; i have yet another criticism. Went in recently to savour a saturday afternoon beverage, when i ordered a latte the barman had no clue what i was talking about, He proceeded to ask what i assume was the bar manager to make it for him. When she fianlly decided to get up and make it, i patiently stood at the bar as she went through the motions only to hear her say "Is it for somebody important?!" This pretty much brought home to me that this place is not worth sticking around in; i duly walked out and will not be returning again.
mooty123 - 26 Sep 2006 23:20
One of only 2 good pubs in Guildford, needs to get back on its toes though,i here it might be changing hands will watch with interest.
Beersupper - 9 Aug 2006 12:54
Hit a raw nerve eh? Good, maybe from now on you will try not to make such 'mistakes' and will get off your behind and serve customers that are not part of your little gang.
I made the fatal error a couple of weeks ago of going back to this place. Despite waiting patiently and politely to be served the barmaid seemed to be most disgruntled that a non regular had the audacity of making her leave her stool where she was holding court with her regulars.
It makes me so mad as this has the potential to be such an excellent little pub, a breath of fresh air compared to the likes of Yates's and co.
kitcat - 19 Jun 2006 07:28
Gareth - 5th of March - to call the bar staff sour-faced is a sweeping generalisation, we would only have been that way if you where rude. Be polite next time and we wont look at you with such obvious disdain.
KITCat - 9th March - I guess your so perfect you don't make mistakes??
And as for anonymous - 6th March - you must be invisible because we've got about 50 regulars who come in everyday who have never complained once. And if you put an incriminating comment like that about us at least have the balls to put your hand up to it.
The Royal Oak is a fabulous pub, really old school, live music, quiz nights. And the bar staff will go out of their way to make you laugh. Plus we pour a damn good pint!
MercedesMcGarry - 14 Jun 2006 14:04
Great little pub. Beer is fantastic and the girl that served me was very friendly. Try the Prize Old Ale (bottle beer - 9%)... tastes like sherry. The Discovery is fantastic. They have live music too... I saw a guy doing blues stuff - great gravelly voice!
therivierakid - 31 May 2006 17:49
A good half of HSB overlooking the cemetery here. Let's hope Fullers don't wreck it (though in their defence they don't tend to wreck pubs, it's just that after their takeover of Gale's we're feeling a bit defensive).
beeronaut - 21 May 2006 08:21
Nice pub, granted, but will fail completely if they don't improve certain bar staff who seem to be more interested in doing crosswords than serving a thirsty customer. The pub's only as good as the bar staff, so lose the slackers!
anonymous - 6 Apr 2006 23:59
POSTED BY KITCAT 9 MARCH 2006

"£2.50 for a pint of soda water and splash of lime."

When someone behind the bar makes this kind of 'mistake' someone else behind the bar needs to start paying attention!!!!!!

I know Guildford pubs are just plain rip-off's but this really is taking the p . . .!
Biker - 11 Mar 2006 13:37
I always used to put up with the high prices in this place simply because it was the sort of proper pub Guildford centre does not have many of any more. That is however before they attempted to charge me £2.50 for a pint of soda water and splash of lime. If you're loaded fine, drink here. If you do not like daylight robbery try the Kings Head down the road.
kitcat - 9 Mar 2006 12:43
As far as I know it's the only Gales house in Guildford, although I suppose I should now call it a Fuller's house! The HSB is kept just right - nectar! Noisy, smoky, exciting. A great pub!
fellwalker - 7 Mar 2006 02:04
As an (older) individual who was a 'Biker' in the sixties and frequented this lovely old boozer far too often for the good of my pocket!! - be thankful, it's still run by a proper landlord/landlady who does not serve 'pap on tap or plate'. My wife and I went in here recently, we were positively impressed.

Look around Guildford, plastic and chrome dumps, most of them run by half-wits and rogues. I will pay you a visit next time I'm up from the coast. ps. try and be nice to the staff for a change!!
Biker - 29 Jan 2006 10:35
Lovely pub. Sam, the land lady is great, sings and plays guitar to entertain the locals. Very friendly.
Saw a fantastic band called the Casinos this week. Bloody marvellous. They have a s site at www.thecasinosrock.com
slapjim - 28 Jan 2006 18:12
Dont know if the pub quiz is going on still. Had live music instead last night
aleman - 14 Oct 2005 22:41
A fantastic little pub, this place is 'local' without the negative connotations. Real Ale and an up-for-it landlady: what more does a man need!
ben_the_melon - 28 Mar 2005 21:14
A rare local feel considering it's smack bang in the middle of the city. Not too many tables but a good place to impress your friends with local knowledge. A hidden retreat!
anonymous - 28 Dec 2004 18:22
What is with the recent Goth invasion?
Vindaloo - 2 Dec 2004 14:08
Rather small pub, not terribly exciting, barstaff are a little unfriendly.
Russ - 8 Sep 2004 16:13
Doesn't really seem like a young person's pub. Sort of a friendly local but friendly in a slightly tribal way. Passes the Guinness test (if the beer in a pub is of a reasonable standard it has a good Guinness), while the Gales beer is average. Has live music on a fairly regular basis. Also check out the jukebox and the TV when matches are on. Not a bad pub, but the younger you are the less you will get out of it.
Will - 8 Aug 2004 22:14
They used to hold darts contests here.
aleman - 3 Aug 2004 11:25
Pretty sour faced bar staff and a increasingly drab atmosphere.
Gareth - 5 Mar 2004 12:23
Doesn't the sign say "big baps served after 2pm"? Either way, that's the level of humour we like in a pub.
Vindaloo - 12 Jan 2004 16:40
Only visited during day- good pint
of Gales.
Steve - 1 Jan 2004 19:41
Not great, but has a big sign next to the bar saying "Big Baps served daily"
James - 20 Dec 2003 14:06
Amazed by previous comment.

Great beer: Gales' GB, regular music/events, good value food.
Vindaloo - 13 Aug 2003 13:06
This is an amazingly friendly pub for a town pub. Both the bar staff and the drinkers are very friendly, especially if you go in when it's a bit quiet. Last time we ended up being taught how to play the Ukelele. Once you've found this pub, you'll keep on going back there.
Gizmo - 21 Jun 2003 13:42
A weird mix of customers - however one of my favourite bars as they don't shove you out the door within 5 minutes of ringing time!
Matt Le Ross - 23 Apr 2003 16:46
Very friendly staff, good enviroment. good beers
Jon - 12 Nov 2002 12:39
About as close to a real pub as you're going to get in Guildford town centre.
Geordie - 1 Aug 2002 08:57

got anything to say about this pub?
