Previous review was harsh! Apologies. Will visit again soon!
BestBeerBoffin - 19 Feb 2017 23:37
Well this used to be a good pub but that has long gone. I gave it a visit on Saturday afternoon and it was a terrible experience. There was only one person serving behind the bar which was annoying in itself, and about 12 guys blocking the bar area and drinking there, isn't that banned yet? I was eventually served in a not especially friend way, the beers were also pretty mundane, the Gales HSB was adequate. The worst part was being sworn at for simply doing nothing by a rude person in the pub. I accept swearing happens but it seems unfriendly to do it out of the blue. No reason to visit again so a 0 rating is given. I'll visit the Robin Hood next time and see how it goes there.
BestBeerBoffin - 17 Dec 2016 17:27
Another good back street pub, Fullers house if you like their beer, clean and tidy
ThePilgrim - 13 Sep 2015 18:11
Love this place, tucked away, beautiful location. good beers. Had a chilli which was really good, not so sure about the burgers on a slate
Diogenes - 26 Sep 2014 21:57
Takes some finding - as it's tucked away behind a church! This probably explains why it was quiet even on a Friday afternoon. Good selection of ales and of hot food - even if the food was served on a trendy slate rather than a proper plate!
Trev - 1 Aug 2014 18:53
This is a very well run pub with interesting, well kept beers. I'm starting to go here regularly now. Bar staff are friendly and knowledgeable. It does good standard pub fare if you want to eat. It's in a quite unusual location for a pub and as building seems the wrong way round! Coming in off the street you enter by what looks the back door, but should be the front and you pass the beer garden as you go downstairs. Then the "front" door looks out over the graveyard. It all adds to the intrigue of a fast improving pub.
alexw123 - 16 Dec 2013 12:39
I thought this Fullers pub in Guildford was the best of the day in Guildford and the surrounding area. The pub is on the hill overlooking a graveyard and the city centre. At the entrance on the other side of the pub is a nice, secluded outdoor drinking area that is probably suited to smokers too. Beers on were Fullers London Pride & Summer Ale, Gales HSB & Ossett Silver King. It was nice to see a guest beer. In fact, the pub is hosting a beer and cider festival this bank holiday weekend. The barmaid was friendly. Whilst I will only award this place a 6 out of 10, it was the best of a fairly average bunch of pubs I tried.
blue_scrumpy - 22 Aug 2013 19:17
I visit this pub regularly, It is a lovely pub. Good beers. The beer festivals are great fun, check out the next one August bank holiday.
Dlanca - 18 Aug 2013 17:49
Echo the positive comments on this hidden gem. It's a Fullers pub but don't fear you just get the bog standard range, there is usually one or two guests or specials as well, and they have beer festivals every so often as well. Has an outside seating area, pleasant place on a warm summer's evening.
PhilR - 4 Aug 2013 22:46
This is my favourite pub in Guildford by a mile. Friendly bar staff, good food and some of the best kept beer I've tasted. No wonder they've been rated as 'Master Cellarman'.

Regular live music make this place a real find. Make sure you check it out.
old_drunk66 - 6 Dec 2012 17:08
Used to be good. Now not so. Dirty, worn and tired with pretty average beers on. A shame as it is in one of the best locations in the town.
oldjg1 - 25 Nov 2012 22:32
Visited in June 2012 - some nice Czech lager on draft - friendly service: recommended
Scepticus - 16 Sep 2012 21:43
Lovely local pub with well looked after beers. Interesting live music pretty regularly.

Bar Billiards too!
lanehead - 12 Sep 2012 17:47
Visited this pub to find very welcoming bar staff and knowledgable on the superb range of ales available !
Andy and the team are creating a very nice place here ,and has just been awarded Master Cellarman Award !
On my visit, five real ales on the bar including 1845 which was in great condition !

When in Guildford,go and find this gem of a pub !!

Keep up the good work andy and the Team !!
quinboy66 - 25 Aug 2012 09:10
An acceptable locals pub which is remarkably average. Worth a trip for an average drink if nothing else.
EyeOfTheTigerBeer - 10 Jun 2012 20:37
Great Pub with real ale and great atmosphere. Listened to a really cool band there also
Natsbadger - 3 Sep 2011 00:34
Excellent. Fullers pub with Okells as a guest beer. Really friendly with customers ranging across the generations. Beer quality superb.
AndySk - 15 Aug 2011 16:47
Nice pub. Under new management by freindly young couple. Has bar billiards & darts board side by side. Don't think I would risk a game of billiards while someone is playing darts unless I had a tin hat on. Outside seating to front and rear. Bit exspensive.
Pubmania - 21 May 2011 14:48
Wow! I think FredCarno, BagBilbo and Dementer seem to have lost their bearings! Are we all talking about the same pub or have they posted on the wrong wall? I have used the Royal Oak frequently since it's re-opening and I cannot relate to any of their comments. Regrettably never met Bruce and Em but they must have returned to their natural home on Mount Olympus and opened a wine bar specialising in 40th birthday functions! The Royal Oak is a great pub with a great atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, friendly locals and the food is terrific and priced better than any other pub in Guildford I've been to. Haven't come across any scruffy unpleasant staff or poorly kept ale. In fact it was good to see another ale pump arrive this week! Hydes Original should make a nice change for you! The new management are clearly trying very hard and are making a real effort to make this one of the best pubs in Guildford.
itsyourround - 19 Apr 2011 01:11
FredCarno and BagBilbo you are spot on this once very good pub is now below average, would not now go out of my way to drink here.
Dementer - 18 Apr 2011 11:54
Popped into this little pub for the first time in a few months. I always used to come in for a pint of London Pride, which was the best pint of Pride in town, and a baguette. What has happened to this lovely little pub? The staff were all smiley, happy and capable, the place was clean and polished. Now the place has an air of complete neglect, the man I think is the landlord is unshaven and scruffy looking, the food unpleasent, the ale worse.
BagBilbo - 11 Mar 2011 15:08
It`s lost most of what I liked about this pub shame.
FredCarno - 23 Feb 2011 18:03
My partner and I and friends have been using this pub since October 2007 when Bruce took over. Prior to that it was dark, dingy and a mess. Bruce and Em did a fantastic job with this pub and we have had many enjoyable nights there. My partner had her 40th birthday there and the buffet was something to be remembered. I understand they left due to extortionate rent. So sad to see the pub return to its former self. Well done Fullers - another splendid pub spolit.
theguildfordfour - 23 Feb 2011 14:57
Visited the Royal Oak on its re-opening night - 11 February 2011 - great atmosphere and friendly crowd in there. The beers, Pride, HSB and a guest called Front Row (for the 6 Nations) were good and the HSB was a particularly ecellent revelation! I was so impressed I returned on Saturday to watch the rugby! Staff are a very cheery lot and service is quick! Glad its re-opened and I wish the new management every success! Well done guys.
itsyourround - 13 Feb 2011 14:41
Good old Fullers up their own backsides as normal, dropped a right bollock letting this pub shut, one of the oldest in Guildford shame on you.
When Fullers were the real Fullers Smith and Turner they were a far better company and this would not have happened.
FredCarno - 30 Jan 2011 10:57
A lovely little pub just off the main high st so no chavs or loud youths in here great atmosphere i had an ale dont remember which i had but there were 2 available went down nicely played some darts with my friend and had a pleasent time nice little patio chatted two the owner for a bit and i will be coming back
thor5355 - 26 Sep 2010 00:23
Sells a good ESB or Seafarers bere.

Sells a good ESB or Seafarers bere.
DrinkingJoeFrazier - 5 Sep 2010 12:15
A characterful old pub situated off the High St behind Holy Trinity Church and it's graveyard, with another enterence on Sydenham Road.

This was my first visit for a few years and a strong smell of bleach as I entered was a little alarming but it soon passed and I put it down to the fact that it was a very early visit on a Friday morning and they had probably just finished cleaning.

The pub is nicely decorated in an olde-worlde style and there was a variety of seating - from classic pub tables and chairs to leather sofas. Everything was clean and tidy.

There were two ales on: London Pride and a very tasty Fullers' Summer Ale. Amongst the usual keg suspects I noticed Aspalls Cider.

I was served by a friendly and cheerful barmaid and then the pub dog, a spaniel, proceeded to fall asleep on my foot! The main customer stream at this time of the week seemed to be blokes of a similar vintage to the dog, coming in for a chat and a read of the paper, leading to a nice relaxed atmosphere.

Well worth a pop in when in Guildford.
flashharry1965 - 31 Aug 2010 12:00
A great location at the rear of the churchyard, we found this one on our wanderings up from the Three Pigeons. Tried the HSB and another from Gales which escapes me. Initially, we would've sat out in the pub garden - (more like a patio with 4 tables) but the aforementioned jukebox was pumping out some 50's dirge, which isn't what you need on a sunny early evening. It' seemed a little quieter inaside. It's tastefully done out for sure but seemed to have a stand at the bar locals crowd, rather than pasing trade. We only got a snapshot, as were weren't there long, so I'd definitly go back for another beer !
watsonworld - 23 May 2010 17:40
Popped in for a quick one as the icy conditions continued to trouble the town.

Quick service which was to my surprise then again it was hardly packed, indeed very empty for a late afternoon.

On tap were three ales - Pride, HSB and Jack Frost. The Jack Frost was excellent.

Also this pub has a warm and homely feel and there is said to be live music at weekends, while the jukebox adds to the atmosphere.

In general a great pub, if a little small for when it gets busy and thus I shall give it a 9/10.
PubReviews2010 - 7 Jan 2010 17:57
If the staff could cheer up this would be a great pub. It has everything required such as a fine ale selection, as well as being situated on a graveyard and selling good food. Darts board as well which is rare these days.
JohnOcean - 23 Dec 2009 14:10
This is a great pub and the Jukebox is cool. The currys are tasty.
PubWithTheGrub - 18 Oct 2009 13:56
Yeah I agree with Bring on Beer about bar staff but other than that good pub. Seems better in evening than in daytime.........
running_around_pubs - 28 Sep 2009 11:59
It is a great shame that those horrible munchkins known as Fullers should take over from Gales, The greedy swines are getting everywhere and the beer is noticeable not as good as it used to be here. The food is edible.
BestBeerBoffin - 30 Aug 2009 17:37
Gales ales which is rare
best_pub_in_city - 30 Aug 2009 15:36
Ohh it appears people do not like this place but in my view it is Guildfords best pub and you have possibly visited at the wrong time of the day ive found if you visit in evenings the service is friendly and there is one very nice barmaid who is happy to pull the drinks.

This pub offers lots in the way of entertainment and often a friendly atmosphere in a town where there are more and more faceless bars so give the oak a go ad dont be disappointed. If i had one disappointment it would be the lack of ales being on - HSB is not the best but the Pride makes up for it.
BigAleDrinkhead - 31 Jul 2009 13:02
A shame to say but the last 2 comments are spot on ,this place has lost the pub feel it once had that made it a good drinkers pub.Yes it does have a dart board, but what kills the atmosphere is the smileless service and the telly thats always on showing basicly adverts.
If the staff showed the customer some respect then may be the pub can turn around and get back to the good times, after all The Oak is a small pub that needs its drinkers as for a food pub it ain`t.
ThePilgrim - 31 Jul 2009 10:22
i agree with botb, the character of this pub has changed, and the staff are more interested in talking to each other about last nights conquests than serving customers, a pity it used to be a good pub
littlecon - 31 Jul 2009 08:41
dominoeffect - this isn't a personal attack at you. I don't know you or anyone else who works there. This website is a pub rating website. The point of it is that you can see what customers think of the pub. I am simply giving my opinion.

The Royal Oak used to be an amazing, quirky pub run by great people with bubbly, friendly staff. It had a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The beer was great (with a guest ale that was usually pretty fitting for the time of year etc).

From my, a punter, point of view things have changed - that atmosphere that made the pub it was has gone and watching the landlord barking at the staff (which I have personally witnessed) doesn't make for a nice relaxing pint.

Try not to be appauled - there are much more pressing things in life to worry about than a beer forum!!

bringonthebeer123 - 31 Jul 2009 06:15
bringonthebeer:

I am currently one of the staff, and I don't feel as though I am miserable!?
If you've got a grudge against one of the staff members/landlord, why don't you say something to he/she? If you believe that writing behind a hidden name will give you satisfaction, why not try the real thing? And don't target the staff, I'm appauled by this, because I really don't believe that I am miserable. Anyway, as for the landlord, I cannot even understand where what you're saying is coming from?!!! Totally out of order! Putting such things in writing is so disrespectful. Come on now, grow up.
dominoeffect - 12 Jul 2009 18:41
Hmm well surely people should be able to make their own minds up about it taking into consideration the negative comments??! It isn't a bad pub - just mundane and boring with miserable staff and a rude and extremely dodgy landlord who is up to no good most of the time.
bringonthebeer123 - 10 Jul 2009 03:18
Good gales pub.

Nice local crowd.

Ok for sitting outside in the summer.

Don't get too drunk and walk on the graveyard.
best_pub_in_city - 21 Jun 2009 19:41
Glad Fullers have taken over this some time ago now. Still we have to put up with the rather disappointing Gales Ales. Seafarers and HSB seem to taste strange. At least there is a good old pint of Fullers London Pride.

On another note I ate here a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed the heated up curry tremendously. If only the staff had been a little more cheerful it would have been great. Even so this is a decent pub situated by the graveyard. I shall give it a 7/10 for having a good Pride and good food.

The jukebox and regular live music and pub quiz also add to the entertainment of this pub.
proper_beer_eating_chap - 10 Jun 2009 19:38
Forgive it was the GALES HSB - easy to get them confused. The Fullers ESB is great but they don't sell it here - try Kings Head.
BestBeerBoffin - 29 May 2009 11:06
One of Guildfords Great Pubs. Avoid the ESB (Extra Special Bitter) Not the best - other than that this is top notch.
BestBeerBoffin - 29 May 2009 11:05
I visited this "old favourite" the other day out of curiosity. I found the staff polite, friendly and efficient. The atmosphere was great and the food fanatsatic value for money. I would certainly bring friends back in the future.
AleTime - 20 May 2009 23:11
I'm one of the staff at the Royal Oak, and having only been working there for 2 months I can say that it has got the best atmosphere for any age. This is my first job, and I have been welcomed so kindly by the landlord(s). You could come in any day of the week, and ask any customers who are currently situated in the pub what they think of the service, and undoubtably all of them would say that it is a great pub, and a lovely, kind, and relaxing atmosphere (apart from when there is a party going on, then it isn't soo relaxing, but very fun and kind nevertheless). Anyone who comes into the pub is treated with full respect, and no one will be harassed. I would recommend this pub to everyone and anyone. Not only is there a great selection of drinks (alcoholic AND non alcoholic) but between the hours of 12pm-3pm you can get served quality food, for a very decent price. And I'm not just saying these things because I work there, I am saying these things because I actually, fully believe that this is a brilliant pub, and only having been working currently for two months here, I have had so many customers who haven't been to the pub in 5 years come in and compliment all the changes, and say that The Royal Oak has turned around for the BETTER. Anything negative written about this pub should be ignored, as it is all false information.
Now, come and check out The Royal Oak, get some great tasting ales and a lovely lunch!!!
dominoeffect - 18 May 2009 23:55
A nice little pub set back a bit from the high street. Nice, friendly, family atmosphere and good pub food (although only served at lunch time). I have spoken to the landlord on more than one occasion and found him chatty and friendly. Also, a really nice pub for after-work drinks!
bigg532017 - 17 May 2009 20:34
Oh dear. This was once such a wonderful pub with lots of character (some would say too much!!) and a lot of charm. It was very unique to say the least. What the hell has happened?? The owner is rude and unpleasant and I have personally seen him shouting at staff in front of all the punters - now that makes for a nice quiet beer doesn't it?! It has lost everything that made it the pub it was for all these years and is now unappealingly bright with nothing more going for it than all the other lifeless pubs. Shame.
bringonthebeer123 - 14 Apr 2009 03:35
dont think its that bad like some of the others have made out, for my money its one of the better pubs in the town really. beer is really fullers if u fancy a real ale i think it was Esb and Pride but also a changing guest ale at times as well. i notice they r doing all meals for 5 pound or less i think to do with the credit crises lets hope they do ok because lets face it we dont want any more of these good pubs to go and be replaced by bars with no personality.
PubMessenger - 22 Mar 2009 14:18
Like beergibbon I visited this pub very regularly when a less discerning teenager, and recently re-visited it (briefly) for the first time in about six or seven years. I wasn't desperately impressed: a boringly functional one-room interior and they've taken out some of the more imposing furniture since the mid-1990s! I wasn't too convinced by the furnishing though, and bits of it were rather over-lit. The three ales on tap were as listed by beergibbon - this is an ex-Gales house now owned by Fullers after they took over Gales. I think I'd go elsewhere in Guildford to be honest, although my hometown isn't exactly known for having quality pubs.
grecian - 28 Feb 2009 19:09
Went on Friday to meet up with some old school friends. Place hasn't changed much since I frequented it during my sixth form years.

Always the same beers on tap whenever I visit being Jack Frost, Gales HSB and Pride if my memory serves me correctly.

Not my favourite pub in Guildford but better than any of the bar drivel on Bridge Street.
beergibbon - 19 Jan 2009 11:55
Nothing wrong with a tv mate, don't be so old fashioned! Good pub, expensive beer but ok fullers which is good.
GuildfordAndWoking - 10 Jan 2009 21:31
Good pub just needs to get shoot of the TV and get a guest ale in,there is life after Fullers ale you know.
Beersupper - 1 Jan 2009 17:28
Yeah one of the best pubs in town ale is good, characters and good fun pub. pride and porter and esb.
BigAleDrinkhead - 1 Nov 2008 18:15
Fullers pub open til midnight. Great atmosphere, great beer, freindly staff and landlord is good company. Has the best jukebox in town, apparently over 42,000 songs 11 tracks for 2. Haven't seen any live music yet but will be going tonight
ummmbeeer - 31 Oct 2008 19:58
Good Pub, glad to see live music is back on!!
louise82 - 18 Sep 2008 23:08
They serve drinks here if your patient enough.
TheSurreyPubMan - 15 Jul 2008 21:02
A good pub, lager is ok bit pricey, but hey ho. They have some bands on know and then some are very good, some crap!

Not seen the landlord serve anyone yet!

Jon
Jonny1967 - 15 Jul 2008 17:48
great HSB beer but would like more varied guest ales. Not sure about TV on most of the day...Great bar staff who are genuinely interested in serving you. Nice to drop in for a chat.
foursimple - 16 Jun 2008 14:41
dear gentlemen,i was in this fine establishment not three weeks ago, what a great pub,yes it is rather over the top on the price of ale,but it was in fine condition, and the service was of top quality, the four guys i was with had a great time and are going back next week, hope to see you down there.6-10.
Man_at_the_bar - 4 Jun 2008 16:48
Got to say i find London Pride very over rated there are so many far better ales !!!! Fullers are a little up themselves now a days i`m afraid
Shame
Beersupper - 4 Jun 2008 16:21
London pride is actually 2.95 not 3.35 like you suggested
caroline123 - 2 Jun 2008 21:48
Yes the HSB is indeed excellent. Met the new manager and he seemed to be a genuine guy who wants to succeed. Despite this being my first visit I was made to feel welcome and got chatting to a few people who obviously were regulars.

Meals are not available in the evening I believe but the sandwich I had was good, and cheap.

Of all the pubs I've visited in Guildford this one seems to have kept itself as a real pub more than the others - the words trendy and bar spring to mind. My only criticism is the price of the beer - this was the most expensive pub I've visited in the town. This seems to be a Fullers tendency everywhere now. My rating is a point lower because of this.
GrahamA - 6 May 2008 14:35
Now has London Porter on the handpump, good to see. Also does an excellent HSB
aleman - 6 Feb 2008 11:21
Good pub this or it used to be its gone way downhill in the last 18 months. The new manager is trying to get it back up and running. But for me its to bright and what the hell is there a TV on for at lunch times????????
ThePilgrim - 8 Jan 2008 10:55
The new 'owners' have grasped the nettle and taken on the challenge. It was never going to be an easy task but the beer [especially HSB] is great and the pub now has an atmosphere of it's own. It is hard to believe the turnaround in 3 months. Well done Bruce and Di for setting the scene and partying like the rest of us. Initial problems that related to the referb (lights too bright) have now been resolved and together with the in house home entertainment system we can listen to Bruces favourites. Food during the lunchtime is of a good quality. Why can't they advertise on the high street like some coffee shops do further down. I hope you're here to stay Bruce. Thanks again. 4 simple ingredients - malt hops yeast and water = HSB!
foursimple - 21 Dec 2007 01:47
Agreed Beersupper, it has in the past been one of the finest pubs in Guildford and the new 'keepers-of-the-ale' deserve a good start. Visitors, if you're visiting the Castle or their superb grounds and gardens, it's ideal.
Biker - 3 Nov 2007 08:47
Bugger off indeed old boy not the said thing you tut tut.
Just a note to wish the new managers all the best ,please get it back to normal its a good pub.
Beersupper - 2 Nov 2007 21:35
Feel free to comment as much as you like Biker

I would visit the pubs you've suggested but they're a little bit far out.

aleman - 29 Oct 2007 19:25
Aleman and Beersupper, are you two running a private chat board for this pub or can anyone join ?

As an old Guildfordian, I feel a decent ordinary (laid back) Guildford boozer like the 'Oak' does not deserve your undivided attention to this extent.

Bugger off and review some other interesting pubs like the Three Compasses in Alfold or the Limeburners at Newbridge.

I will make a point of visiting the Oak again very shortly and either condemn or condone both of your views as valid or otherwise. Be good !
Biker - 26 Oct 2007 10:05
Aleman i like this pub but its not run at all well.
Beersupper - 28 Aug 2007 13:04
Aleman i visited this pub ( which was one of me fav`s) again the other day and it needs a real good shake up its not that homely any more in need of a good clean & really needs a good landlord in to sort it out,or you could send the management on a management course if that would do any good!!
Beersupper - 17 Jul 2007 08:52
Lunch times are totally different to evenings.
Evening is the time the maddness takes over must be something in the ciggies!!!!!!!
Beersupper - 20 May 2007 13:52
What do you have against this place in particular though Beersupper? I will admit i've never eaten here, but i've always found the beer here to be fine. And the service has always seemed adequate and fairly prompt, feels like less of a locals pub than the Robin Hood over the road
aleman - 16 May 2007 19:16
O dear O dear O dear what the heck has happened to this once very good pub have the loonies taken over the asylum i think so.
Hang your head in shame Fullers for ruining a lovely Gales pub well done you idiots.
If it carries on like this it will close and end up a block of apartments or is that what you have in mind?????
Dont be shy Fullers feel free to say.
Beersupper - 13 May 2007 19:14
Stroller took the words out of my mouth with this place. Used to be a very good pub, but has gone so downhill. It can be difficult working out who is on duty to serve you a drink!! You then get sighed at when they have to get up off their seat to do it.. The only way of getting a clean table is to ask them for a cloth and do it yourself!!
thirstypunter - 30 Apr 2007 16:27
6 months since i last called in here and my what a change the place is now a complete Craphole. The bar staff are all over the place ( not sure what the short barmaid was on but was not on this planet)drinks being thrown all over the place, people just going behind the bar to help themselves.
Who the heck runs this wreck of a pub.Keep well clear if you fancy a chilled night out.
It will be another 6 years before i venture in here if ever, such a shame a good pub gone bonkers.0/10
stroller - 13 Apr 2007 18:17
Went in yesterday for lunch the service was great but hold up the food, well it was only scampi & chips but it was yuck the scampi was rock hard.Come on people this place should not have a bad report on this site but you are getting very close to one.Plus point beer was pretty good.
Beersupper - 26 Jan 2007 18:38
Is perhaps a bit close-knit here. However the drinks and the friendly enough atmosphere continue to make this place one of the better places to go
anonymous - 17 Dec 2006 00:31
As i said before this is one of only my two fav. pubs in the town, but i must agree with other reviews the bar staff do let this place down .Every thing else comes first other than serving the customer.I do hope this changes as i dont want to be put off comming herE.
Beersupper - 16 Dec 2006 13:28
Appears the bar stuff here change quite frequently, pub itself is rather similiar to the Robin Hood just nearby. Sells fullers drinks at the moment
anonymous - 12 Nov 2006 10:44
I have been in here a few times recently & i have to agree the bar service is not that bad,(yes they do talk far to much to their friends )but the wait on food is really awful.I will not use this place again!!!! I would have given this 2 for being there but its not worth that.
stroller - 19 Oct 2006 20:53
I'm not a regular but have been in a few times to kill time, read a book etc. The staff do chat with their mates but never fail to spring to action. I've always found them as friendly as I'd want staff to be. The beer is good, the juke box excellent and location by the graveyard perfect - especially on a dark wet windy day.
HoodedCrow - 13 Oct 2006 13:36
To back up my earlier comment on this pub; i have yet another criticism. Went in recently to savour a saturday afternoon beverage, when i ordered a latte the barman had no clue what i was talking about, He proceeded to ask what i assume was the bar manager to make it for him. When she fianlly decided to get up and make it, i patiently stood at the bar as she went through the motions only to hear her say "Is it for somebody important?!" This pretty much brought home to me that this place is not worth sticking around in; i duly walked out and will not be returning again.

Hit a raw nerve eh? Good, maybe from now on you will try not to make such 'mistakes' and will get off your behind and serve customers that are not part of your little gang.
I made the fatal error a couple of weeks ago of going back to this place. Despite waiting patiently and politely to be served the barmaid seemed to be most disgruntled that a non regular had the audacity of making her leave her stool where she was holding court with her regulars.
It makes me so mad as this has the potential to be such an excellent little pub, a breath of fresh air compared to the likes of Yates's and co.

Gareth - 5th of March - to call the bar staff sour-faced is a sweeping generalisation, we would only have been that way if you where rude. Be polite next time and we wont look at you with such obvious disdain.
KITCat - 9th March - I guess your so perfect you don't make mistakes??
And as for anonymous - 6th March - you must be invisible because we've got about 50 regulars who come in everyday who have never complained once. And if you put an incriminating comment like that about us at least have the balls to put your hand up to it.
The Royal Oak is a fabulous pub, really old school, live music, quiz nights. And the bar staff will go out of their way to make you laugh. Plus we pour a damn good pint!

Great little pub. Beer is fantastic and the girl that served me was very friendly. Try the Prize Old Ale (bottle beer - 9%)... tastes like sherry. The Discovery is fantastic. They have live music too... I saw a guy doing blues stuff - great gravelly voice!

A good half of HSB overlooking the cemetery here. Let's hope Fullers don't wreck it (though in their defence they don't tend to wreck pubs, it's just that after their takeover of Gale's we're feeling a bit defensive).
beeronaut - 21 May 2006 08:21
Nice pub, granted, but will fail completely if they don't improve certain bar staff who seem to be more interested in doing crosswords than serving a thirsty customer. The pub's only as good as the bar staff, so lose the slackers!

I always used to put up with the high prices in this place simply because it was the sort of proper pub Guildford centre does not have many of any more. That is however before they attempted to charge me 2.50 for a pint of soda water and splash of lime. If you're loaded fine, drink here. If you do not like daylight robbery try the Kings Head down the road.

As far as I know it's the only Gales house in Guildford, although I suppose I should now call it a Fuller's house! The HSB is kept just right - nectar! Noisy, smoky, exciting. A great pub!
fellwalker - 7 Mar 2006 02:04
Dont know if the pub quiz is going on still. Had live music instead last night

A fantastic little pub, this place is 'local' without the negative connotations. Real Ale and an up-for-it landlady: what more does a man need!
ben_the_melon - 28 Mar 2005 21:14
A rare local feel considering it's smack bang in the middle of the city. Not too many tables but a good place to impress your friends with local knowledge. A hidden retreat!

What is with the recent Goth invasion?
Vindaloo - 2 Dec 2004 14:08
Rather small pub, not terribly exciting, barstaff are a little unfriendly.
anonymous - 8 Sep 2004 16:13
Doesn't really seem like a young person's pub. Sort of a friendly local but friendly in a slightly tribal way. Passes the Guinness test (if the beer in a pub is of a reasonable standard it has a good Guinness), while the Gales beer is average. Has live music on a fairly regular basis. Also check out the jukebox and the TV when matches are on. Not a bad pub, but the younger you are the less you will get out of it.
Will - 8 Aug 2004 22:14
They used to hold darts contests here.
aleman - 3 Aug 2004 11:25
Pretty sour faced bar staff and a increasingly drab atmosphere.
Gareth - 5 Mar 2004 12:23
Doesn't the sign say "big baps served after 2pm"? Either way, that's the level of humour we like in a pub.
Vindaloo - 12 Jan 2004 16:40
Only visited during day- good pint
of Gales.
Steve - 1 Jan 2004 19:41
Not great, but has a big sign next to the bar saying "Big Baps served daily"
James - 20 Dec 2003 14:06
Amazed by previous comment.

Great beer: Gales' GB, regular music/events, good value food.
Vindaloo - 13 Aug 2003 13:06
This is an amazingly friendly pub for a town pub. Both the bar staff and the drinkers are very friendly, especially if you go in when it's a bit quiet. Last time we ended up being taught how to play the Ukelele. Once you've found this pub, you'll keep on going back there.
Gizmo - 21 Jun 2003 13:42
A weird mix of customers - however one of my favourite bars as they don't shove you out the door within 5 minutes of ringing time!
Matt Le Ross - 23 Apr 2003 16:46
Very friendly staff, good enviroment. good beers
Jon - 12 Nov 2002 12:39
About as close to a real pub as you're going to get in Guildford town centre.
