user reviews of the Plough, Doncaster

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Old fashioned local style pub with front and back room reminiscent of public bar and lounge of old. The Acorn Barnsley Bitter went down nicely. Close to bus and rail stations and shopping centre.

Great locals place in contrast to the Tut'n'Shive next door. Only 3 ales on and dissappointingly only one remotely local in Barnsley Bitter. But they did have Bitter and Twisted on which pleased the Boss. Heritage wise a must to visit for the stainglazed windows and other period pieces.

Always a good experience, a proper pub with good, well-priced ales, friendly service and a good crowd of regulars. The Barnsley bitter and Black Sheep were in good condition, although some of our group found it a bit cold for their liking. For some reason, there were a bunch of Cockneys there last Saturday sining loudy and drinking a mixture of port and blue WKD at half past 11 in the morning, but they soon staggered off bellowing down the road and we did not see them again. I hope this pub remains relatively unchanged, as it has in the years I have been visiting.

My 2nd visit since October when i first reviewed this pub, and i must say it's even better 2nd time around.

An excellent real pub with real people, friendly locals and good bar staff.

I will return.

After the long walk from the Tut'n'Shive we finally arrived at The Plough which is a superb little town boozer which,as has been said before,is something of a time warp. Great atmosphere with two busy rooms full of locals and shoppers and racing on the telly (footie results followed). Barnsley Bitter;Golden Sheep and John Willie Lees Bitter on the pumps and all excellent. Very friendly with efficient staff who seem to know everyone who comes in!! A proper pub and not too far from the station (if you cna dodge the busy dual-carriageway!!) Highly recommended.

This place looks quite bland from outside, but make the effort and go inside. It is a little time warp, full of wooden walls, and 1930's style features. There are two distinct seperate rooms, one of which which had a nice warming fire. There were several real ales on offer on the bar, whilst the gents outside toilets in December certainly made you realise what it is like to be a Northern drinker.
The pub is welcoming and cosy, and should be visited if you fancy a proper pub which has yet to be ruined by anyone wishing to turn it into an identikit town centre bar.

This is a superb of a dying breed of pubs... a small local boozer. The beer is well kept with Stones and Barnsley bitter regular along with rotating guest beers. It has a small bar and an even smaller lounge.

The bar is a superb place to call in and have a few beers and maybe watch a bit of horse racing and the football results. There are 2 TV's catering for each and betting slips on the bar... overall this is a real gem of a pub... the toilets are outside the smoking area small but the regulars are a friendly bunch and the beer is great !!

What a cracking little pub. I echo the thoughts of mcroyal

Popped in a for a few pints on a Sat lunchtime, even though it was clearly my first visit the barmaid and locals made me very welcome.

3 different ales plus the regular Stones on, I had the guest which was Full Moko from Sadlers, of the Black Country, perfectly kept and poured.

I honestly cannot praise this pub enough.... I love it here.

My next visit to Doncaster will now be much sooner than planned just to visit the Plough.

Top pub

Now on to my views of the pubs in Scunthorpe.........

The back bar seems to be fitted out for WW2, only Alvar Liddell reading the news was missing. Nice and cosy for a Pompey fan held up at Donny station on the way back from Scunny.

Quirky little two room pub only 5 minutes walk from the railway station and the town centre. On the Saturday I visited the back room was full of football fans and the front was filled with racing types. All in all made for a good atmosphere. Add to that an excellent pint of Barnsley Acorn and you have the recipe for a top boozer. Well worth looking out and a better choice (for me) than the Tut next door.

I enjoyed all 3 beers in here before my train home! Traditional little local (right next door to the Tut@n@Shive)which features in CAMRA's list of unspolit pubs - although the laminated bar top was a bit out of place. However, great atmosphere with a huge mix of clientele - most of whom were drinking the fine ales (Copper Dragon.Acorn and Kelham Island). 2.50 for the most expensive pint. Well worth visiting and literally 2 minutes frpom the station (although you have to get across the main road). A highly recommended pub.

Two bar town centre pub handy for the station. The bar at the front was fairly busy with no tables available. We retreated to the lounge at the rear, which was empty. 3 or 4 real ales were on. A fairly traditional pub. But nothing to write home about.

Used to go in this pub quite a few years ago. Was always welcoming and I often drank more than I should have there...Just wondered if Tony Mac still went in??
dartswinedrinker - 4 Nov 2010 22:28
Only 2.40 for a great pint of Skipton Copper Dragon, the kinda place you will go for a pint while changing trains and never return to the station!! 7/10

A gem for real ale fans. Often other local beers in a ddition to the usual local Acorn brewery beer. No food though. Toilets are interesting.

A rare find nowadays - a proper locals pub in a town centre. Friendly welcome and a tip-top pint of Acorn Brewery Barnsley Bitter - at a very reasonable 2.00. Also stocks guest ales. Well worth a visit!

This welcoming town centre locals pub looks fairly unassuming from the outside but the pub does have the distinction of being on the CAMRA inventory of unspoilt interiors. The plans for the last major alteration in 1934 can be seen in the corridor between the 2 bars and show what is now the main bar divided into a Dram Shop and Kitchen whilst the rear Smoke Room appears to have been left virtually untouched. Evidence of the main bars division can be seen by the presence of 2 pretty tiled fireplaces and despite the expansion, it still has a cosy, intimate, old fashioned feel to it. A collection of bottles winds its way around the top shelves and an old Donny Rovers picture tells you where the locals loyalties lie. The 2 TVs are pretty basic affairs rather than the fancy mod con flat screens that you now take for granted. Note also the unusual tables. The rear smoke room centres on a tiled coal fireplace and the room has some fine coloured glass windows as well as the original call bells and a service hatch. Collectables include plates, an old radio, and some fancy teapots. A small courtyard keeps the smokers happy and also leads to the gents which you almost expect to be open air!

3 Ales on offer - Acorn Yorkshire Pride & Barnsley Bitter (both 2 a pint) and Bass (2.40), the Yorkshire Pride being the pick of the bunch for me. The locals were very friendly and welcoming with a bit of football banter after they threatened not to serve me in my Spurs shirt! A terrific little pub that is part of a dying breed in town centres.

The brunette barmaid who works here on a Saturday night is possibly the sexiest barmaid in the whole of Doncaster. Can't pull a pint well but who cares!!!
murtonvic - 2 Aug 2009 12:32
Friendly staff, beer well-kept and not too expensive. As GuideDogSaint says, worth a visit.
DuchyBoy - 8 Dec 2008 12:27
Nice little pub just out of the shopping centre. Barnsley Bitter was excellent, Bass ok too. Nothing to get really excited about but simply a down to earth, friendly local.

Worth a visit.
GuideDogSaint - 24 Feb 2008 22:03
The perfect locals' pub, friendly, welcoming, warm (if the door to the gents' isn't open all the time). The Barnsley Bitter is always perfect condition.
Andreas_Buergel - 3 Jul 2007 14:52
In sharp contrast with the next door Tut & Shive, this pub exudes tradition. Only a choice of two real ales from Bass and Acorn Brewery but always in perfect nick.

Not too bad bit lively as Donny Rovers had just turned over Aston Villa 3-0. Come on the lads :o)
BigJapp2 - 6 Dec 2005 13:48
Good Boozing bar with Friendly staff and a very pleasant Landlord and Landlady. No frills But the Barnsley bitter is always singing.
martshaw - 3 Oct 2005 14:10
Old fashioned boozer just off the main drag but not on the 'circuit'. Good public bar and quieter saloon at the rear.
