Used to love this place. When I first went it had a front bar that was about authentic as it got. Became a little grotty with time, but the quiz was brilliant, being run by enthusiasts and raising loads of dosh for St Christophers Hospice.

Long since blown away, but thanks as this made me try the EDT after a ten year absence which is much more my cup of tea (or pint of beer).

Now called The Great Exhibition.

Some people were playing monopoly. Danger Mouse was showing ironically on a tv screen with the sound turned down. Del Boy and Rodney were pictured promoting their New Years Eve Party, batman and robin style. It made your great aunt laugh back in 1990 something. Neither Rodney nor Denzil would drink in here.

As has been said previously, this pub is now the Great Exhibition. It is tucked away on a street corner in the back streets of East Dulwich. I was slightly disappointed with the pub. It's a Laines pub and the only 2 ales on offer were both from Laine - 48 & Best Bitter. There was no real cider either. It was very noisy in there too, with some kind of entertainment that was more annoying than entertaining. The interior was also a little too dark for my liking. Seemed to have a fairly young, well-heeled crowd, with some dining. But there are far better pubs in East Dulwich in my opinion.

My first visit here and I wasn't expecting how busy and noisy it would be at 1pm on a Saturday.

Brunch was the reason the place was so packed, not a spare table in site and only room at the bar for a beer.

5 hand pumps with 3 ales on which were Sambrook's Pumphouse Pale Ale & Junction & Laine's Best Bitter. Again I opted for a bottle which was Fordham - Copperhead Ale - 5.0%

This is a large 1 bar establishment with plenty of tables aswell as original features these include large industrial style ceiling lights above the bar, big glass fronted windows, attractive decorated glass and wooden bar and bizarrely a large cows head with horns on the wall in the rear garden / smoking area.

A decent pub but hard to judge whether its a great pub as brunch was the most important thing for 95% of the punters during my visit.

Another one I will return to.

Ales all far too hoppy for my liking.

4.20 for a pint of Symonds Cider, but then again, that's about the average price is this part of South East London these days.

The pub itself is done out in a quite modern / couches etc type fashion, to attract families and young proffesionals eating overpriced meals.

It's not really my bag but then again, you may well dig it.

Have been coming intermittently to the pub quiz (Wed night) for several years - probably 3 or 4 times a year with a group of friends. Used to be a good night out - has steadily gone down hill over the past year.

Problems - quality and availability of decent ale has nose-dived, to the point that this week there were no ales at all on offer on the Wednesday night. Previous weeks it has been very poor quality. For heavens sake - this is the pub quiz night - a promotion. Sort it out.

Secondly - the quiz has been getting progressively later - this week the quizmaster hadn't even turned up by 9.40. Our team includes a couple of people who used to trek down from North London to come along, but as it now tends to run significantly past 11pm, it's no longer a viable option.

This week, with the lack of beer and abscence of quizmaster - we walked out. Probably not to return - there's not much else to reccomend this place imho.

East Dulwich has a sore lack of pubs that haven't turned into over-priced restaurants with a bar. CPT is a proper pub, with friendly staff and a good atmosphere. It has Sky Sports, seating outside and is a great place for a quiet pint. And unlike most places in the area, it doesn't seem to be overrun with massive buggies and screeching children!

Highly recommended.

so this place is for sale? saw in a catalogue, will return in summer , see if if changes. beer was ok , I liked the back room bar area

Great pub, music and beer. Staff are polite and although it could do with a bit of modernistic decor it'll do well in the area. I'll be back
millwallandy1 - 22 Jan 2008 10:07
truly astonishing

Excellent pub with good beer - inc Adnams broadside, well kept. The front bar is done up in an Lordship Lane type of way, it is very pleasant although annoyingly they have put a TV up in there, which they leave on continuously. Although it is the less attractive room, the back bar has much more character and I would say is probably the best place to drink at in the area.

Great pub, fast becoming my favourite in East Dulwich. The lounge bar is great and has real old fashioned feel about it. Staff are nice and friendly and also good for sport without getting packed out like the EDT.
gooding - 29 Mar 2007 11:03
Without a doubt the best boozer in East Dulwich and worth escaping the comfort zone of Lordship Lane for. Seats in lounge recently recovered. Staff first class, friendly. The combination of the bar and back lounge works well. The lounge is the place to be in the winter when the fire is lit. Beer is excellent.

Always has a good evening at this place. Good staff and friendly locals. Not pretentious at all.
Donnington - 24 Sep 2006 16:18
very nice wine and snacks. also good area to sit out front. back of pub is horrible. really needs doing up. felt like i was sitting on some really horrible stuff. staff are very friendly and good local for the summer until the back is done up.
elm8 - 4 Jul 2005 17:22
Been in this pub several times recently and will definitely be going back. The front has been done up well, but I prefer the back. OK - so the seats might need a re-upholstering, but it has charm, it feels like a proper old pub of which sadly there are less and less.
Good well kept ales - especially pleased to find Speckled Hen on draught.
But the best thing about the pub is the staff, especially Jamie the gorgeous manager - worth a visit just to meet him.
Trillion - 18 Mar 2005 14:59
This pub has not been the same since Brian left. The front bar has been very nicely refurbished and the beer is good. But the back is in a terrible state, you have to laugh there is a sign outside saying no work boots or dirty overalls, yet if you went in the back you would come out dirtier than when you went in. Such a shame as it could be a good pub.
ashbyc - 21 Feb 2005 17:13
as a local to this pub for a long time i`d like to say how much i still love it . probably even more since they did up the front. the 'old' back bit is so cosy. feels like christmas. i don`t bother with the front. nice staff.
swifty - 2 Nov 2004 14:46
The old side is very shabby, the beer quality is variable and quite expensive. Looks like someone is trying to milk the punters
Old and Crusty - 24 Aug 2004 17:32
What do you mean the "old side" needs a revamp JMK? Don't you mean restoring? Look what they've done to the Plough, the Cherry Tree, the Patmac, the Foresters, the Grove Tavern. Even Gateways has gone, now you can buy limp yellow brocolli in trendy Somerfields for your vegan bird and put poor shop asistants out of work by checking the rubbish through an a self pay machine with the help of a faceless moron. Post a photo, I'm curious.
old empire - 29 Jul 2004 01:06
Great.Staff were really cool.Old-side needs a revamp but otherwise the place to be in East Dulwich.Love it.9/10
J.M.K. - 6 Jun 2004 23:39
I love it. Just because it's the only place in ED that is a bit homely... I like the no kids anywhere rule (who wants them running around in a pub anyway?). Staff used to be better though
Anna - 26 May 2004 15:23
was once a nice pub, with a good atmosphere. however, i find it now has a more pretentious air about it. Definatly too expensive also.
amymay - 30 Dec 2003 20:57
Friendly with a great atmosphere, loads of football, fantastic outside area with heat lamps. Plenty of other places to go and eat in ED so great to be able to get away from it! The best place to be.
Steven - 4 Nov 2003 13:00
God nows what some of these people are banging on about. Who need food when you go and watch every game of football possible. Average beer prices for E D and never any hassle in there a good outside area. Better than the Uplands by about 10 miles.
Simon - 27 Oct 2003 14:42
Far too expensive for a run down badly managed pub. The quiz is not nearly as good as it used to be and the prize sucks! Only go there because its near.
Barry - [email protected] - 21 Oct 2003 16:04
Pub Quiz - every Wednesday at 8:30pm. Its a general trivia quiz. Entry is free, but we hope you will buy a raffle ticket or two in aid of charity.
Lesley - 5 Oct 2003 17:32
Bit expensive, but the only places cheaper in the area are grubby places like the Castle. Atmosphere is friendly and it feels like a real local plece.

Main bad point is that it's trying to be something it's not. It's a nice back street boozer, not a trendy Clapham "bar". Stupid rules like the dress code put people off, and I don't see why people can't sit outside and have a drink with a kid in a pram.

That said, I love it. It's by far the best place to drink in Dulwich!
Kenevil - 25 Jul 2003 13:59
OVERPRCIED for a local, place is falling apart, miserable bar staff, NO food, doesn't allow children(even outside), can't wear 'working clothes' - not very good for a back street local.
brian - [email protected] - 24 Jul 2003 17:45
The best pub around, good 4 locals
ok prices
Bagpuss - 10 Jul 2003 14:09
good local for those who live in that part of east dulwich and dont want to go to the refurbed uplands tavern. good regular crowd, nice traditional decor, football screens, outside seating.
