Now has a sign outside stating 'we now sell Nelson Ales' so against my better judgement I ventured inside for a beer. The moment you enter you discover where the majority of Rainham's unemployable drink - this is a lesson in what happens when you have a limited gene pool, you would think that they had Super Tennants on draft...
Anyway, onto the beer - It may have been Nelson's at one point but it certainly wasn't when I got to it, tasted somewhere between mould and pipe cleaner though I may be mistaken on the latter.
The redeeming feature of this pub was the dog, a large friendly fluffy thing, however I'm not sure how long it will last if a local gets an attack of the munchies....
I'm glad I ventured in here though - it means I never have to go in again...

Avoid like the plague. I was in there a couple of years ago when a rather large girl with glasses came in and performed sexual acts on 3 of the punters who were sitting up at the bar in full view of everyone else in the pub. It seemed that this was in exchange for a drink too which tells you a lot about the type of people who go there. Railway? It's off the f*cking rails and has been for quite some time! Never again!

Has bar and lounge and is handy for the station. Couldn't see any ales so had a lager. Okay for a swift pint while waiting on a train.

Went in to this pub a couple of weeks ago after a horrendously delayed journey from London (desperate need of a pint). We went in to the first pub we could, The Railway. All seemed fine, the bar maid was courteous and friendly, there were a few people in there enjoying themselves, they were a bit loud, but hey, its a pub and the atmosphere was calm and friendly. The dcor is a bit grubby and could do with a bit of a revamp, but its not offensive its a real working class pub, much preferred to a wanky wine bar. My friend and I commented that this is actually a nice pub (contrary to its past reputation), perfect for a cheeky swift pint before you go home to the wife! Then a man came down the stairs (assume the Landlord), stomping through the pub fing and blinding, he was obviously very angry about something. He continued stomping and swearing and when the bar maid asked him a question, he spoke to her the most condescending manner I have ever heard. This guy obviously has some serious issues, we thought he was going to kill somebody! With this, what started out as a very calm and relaxing pint, turned in to the pint from hell. We suddenly felt very threatened and uneasy, totally changing the ambiance of the place. Most of the people in the pub didnt seem that worried about it and we heard one guy say oh hes off on one again, suggesting that this behaviour was a regular occurrence!

Im tempted to go in again in the hope that this guy was just having a really really bad day. I think Ill take a few more people with me this time (safety in numbers), in case the angry Landlord is angry again! Overall Id rate this pub:

Location: 7
Staff: 8
Atmosphere: Originally 6, dropping to 2
Beer: 7

Defo been turned around in the last month or so. Worth a try. Riff Raff gone and trying to make a go of it. Fairly friendly with a few doughnuts, but hey, same as everywhere!

I went into this place last week and it really has turned itself around. The people are really friendly (now all the crap has been barred) and the atmosphere was really welcoming. There were a few louts but that is expected anywhere. I was really suprised to see quite a few people in their 20s there playing pool and enjoying themselves. It is also a regular place to see the rainham sheriff which is a bonus. The drinks are quite cheap considering . The bar staff are really friendly as well, I was surprised to be served by a young girl who was very funny and welcoming. The place is much better than it's reputation and I will definately go there again!

Went past the Railway yesterday and it is very much alive and, in traditional fashion, kicking.

Terrible place........ Full of people who are barred from all of the other pubs in Rainham.

My Brother-in-law used to work there and told me a couple of interesting things;

1) He found a crack pipe in the toilets a few times.
2) Drug use and dealing was very open.
3) When you ask for a double with a mixer and have had a few drinks, its custom for the staff to serve you a single and top up with mixer..... oh but tthey still charge for a single.

Avoid at all costs as it really is a dive, and I do normally enjoy a pub with a bit of an edge! Shame as it is perfectly placed to really draw in the crowds.

Cheap and scruffy local. Pit-bull terriers both sides of the bar. Loud juke-box. No cask.

The last time I was there, I opened the door where there were some clearly debatable-aged drinkers shouting their heads off.

Then, as I approached the bar, a bony woman with no front teeth started grabbing me and gesturing me to dance. I then turned and left as quickly as I had come in.

Before then, it had always been an awful pub with a poor reputation. Always full of louts of all ages that clearly wouldn't be allowed into any other pub in Rainham. The staff were ok and the beer is pretty much standard but there is no reason why you would ever want or need to drink there.
