really friendly bar with excellent local beers and amazing garden

I went to their beer festival yesterday and found all the staff friendly and attentive, where this pompous bit comes from I cant tell, could it be the other pubs in the village whose reports are less than inspiring. For a small festival its one of the best I have ever been to - even the rain did'nt spoil the atmosphere. Compared to the usual private beer festivals along the line of the A69 this was great value 3 / 2 Camra, and all beers at 2.60 a pint, take note you 10 / 3 pint rip-off merchants ( you know who you are ) there is a new boy on the block, and the festival was for charity so you cant use that excuse. I hope that this will not only be a once a year occasion, I will certainly offer any help I can with publicity. Keep up the good work.

The battlesteads is alright to be fair. Its expensive, however the food is okay and so is the portion, not great value but not bad. The staff are good and the decor is nice. The beer garden is also okay but nothing spectacular. It was known as a hikers stop but its not so much now due to over priced rooms. Although warks a lovely stop, its not central to many walks so charging the prices they do drags the popularity down, hence the 5 rating.

The beer was very good making Battlesteads well worth a stop: five pumps of local real ales, all well kept. As another reviewer said, only limited space inside, but if the weather's fine it has a very pleasant garden (though take some midge repellent in the Summer!).

Contrary to the comments of some posters, I found the owners and staff friendly. The food was fine, and well cooked, but there was not as much variety as I would have liked over a period of a few days.

I don't know what the fuss is all about.
Its a small family run hotel with a limited amount of space indoors but its in a great part of the Country. Hills, rivers, woods, walks and walls (Hadrian of course) and other (better) pubs are not too far away.
Its okay for an overnight stay, but its a bit pricey for anything more.
I agree that the staff/owners/managers (its hard to tell who is who) are a bit pompous (you can take the man out of the town etc).

So, if your their daugther that must make you the short 'blonde' who was supposed to manage the pub they had in North Shields. The pub was going down hill while you were there and now your a gardener. Hmm speaks volumes.
I admire your diversity and that you must be mult-skilled. Are you qualified as a bar manager or a gardener. Why aren't you the bar manager at the hotel?
And as far as anon comments, you made many anaon comments about the pub and even pretended to be a customer posting comments on at least one occassion.
So laugh at yourself before others.

Ha Ha Ha I just read 'anonymous - 30th July 07' makes me laugh when people leave comments like theirs but hide their names!! why bother leaving a comment??
I happen to be the gardener there at the 'steads, and happen to be the 'pompous townies full of their own importance' daughter and have seen first hand the hard work, effort and incredible stress to make it what it is now. 3 years ago it was on its knees. Now its a destination venue with a beer garden really becoming something too !!
So to anyone reading this - yes Iam biased totally, visit the'steads and make your own mind up and next year the beer garden will look like its always been like that !!

This is an excellent hotel / restaurant with lunchtime and evening specials which are great value. The food is of a great standard and the staff, including the owners are very friendly and certainly not pompous !!! The owners and chef come from the Magnesia Bank which they made into arguably the best pub in the North East for food music and beer -they are now doing the same to the Battlesteads. Well worth a visit

The bar is okay, its got a nice beer garden to have a drink in on summers afternoon. This place should be full of hikers but the food is too expensive and they don't do what you might call bar food, its all restuarant stuff. The people in charge came over as pompous townies full of their own importance.
