user reviews of the Prince of Wales, Pimlico

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Usually a nice pub to visit with a selection of fine ale.

Unfortunately there is a largish barmaid with an attitude problem more interested in chatting with chums than serving customers.

Not a bad pub. Friendly (and attractive) barmaid, my pint of Doom Bar was fine too. Nothing special about the place but OK-ish. Shame the sandwiches ordered came with white bread.
Paul_Rochdale - 13 May 2012 22:17
Nice enough pub with freindly enough folk and a reasonable pint of Brakspears Gold.

Enjoyed a few pints in this place over the last few years. This is only a small pub and very easy to miss if you do not know of its existence. A lot of regulars frequent this establishment but are friendly enough, and there is a nice little outside area for smokers.
alcohol1c_anonymous - 26 Feb 2011 16:25
Had a pint of very drinkable Landlord (3.20) last night. Decent enough pub but by virtue of it being just one room, was very busy around 6.30pm.

Not a bad pub, beers are in good condition and the place sports a nice atmosphere. Will return again. The guinness is good in here

Real ales on were London Pride, Timothy Taylor Landlord, and the more rarely seen OHanlons Yellowhammer. I went for the Yellowhammer as it as an ale that Ive only had a couple of times before, and it was as good as I remembered from the previous occasions. Food menu consisted of Thai food great if you like it, which I do and the chicken green curry was most enjoyable. However, a group of six American tourists wandered in (presumably having taken a wrong turn at Buckingham Palace) looking for some fish and chips, and were somewhat surprised to find that an English pub didnt have this staple menu item on offer.

This is a smallish one-room pub down Wilton Rd, which looks as if it ought to be a backstreet pub, but is prevented from being one by virtue of being on a busy thoroughfare. There were some stools at the bar; one high table and high stools, as well as some normal tables and chairs and a scattering of small stools. There didnt seem to be anything unusual in the way of decor, though I did spot some prints at the back featuring the Crown Jewels and other regal paraphernalia. There were some picnic benches outside, presumably for smokers, with a canopy over them which unfortunately made the inside even gloomier than it would otherwise have been on a very dull and overcast day. There was TV monitor on showing the cricket, but muted, some pop music being played, and I saw a one-armed bandit flashing away. Its carpeted throughout, which gave it a warm feel, and the windows had some Victorian style drapes next to them.

But my abiding memory of this pub is the overpowering smell of disinfectant, or some other cleaning product, that lingered throughout my visit. Nonetheless, I quite liked this small and reasonably cosy pub. I am sure that without the all-pervading smell of disinfectant it would be much nicer.

This is a pretty standard boozer which is long and thin as can be seen from the picture above. Landlord and Pride were available during my visit, but there were three hand pumps with their clips turned around and Amstel was also available along with a standard draught range.

It was pretty busy during my visit as a match on Sky Sports was being aired on the plasma screens at either end of the bar. There was nowhere to sit so I sat outside on one of the picnic tables and enjoyed my well served pint whilst people watching.

This place doesnt really stand out and I wouldnt purposely return.

The Victoria line was closed down for maintenance this weekend and being a nice, warm and sunny day, I thought a walk was called for. For those who don't know the area, Wilton road from Victoria station down to the Pimlico riverside is a pleasant trot with interesting shops, bars and hotels aplenty. With a nice holiday buzz about the place. Passing the Prince of Wales on a sunny corner, I decided to pop in. A clean, bright old fashioned pub. Pleasant, pretty blond girl served me a well kept and drawnpint of Tim Taylors. Sitting outside in the suntrap cul de sac side of the pub was very pleasant I have to say. The locals were old fashioned Pimlico people, Londoners all, a fact, so nice and rare these days. When so much of SW London has become Latinised with Hispanic and South Americans all over the place. This pub reminds me of how nice and English pubs were in the 1970s. A place that I will drop by again if passing. very

Went to this pub on a Monday evening around 5.30. Interior was pretty scruffy. Seemed to be a rough element in there. Whole experience topped off by girl wandering around selling pornography from a holdall, many in the pub seemed to be regular customers of her. Bar staff wandered past as this was happening and said hello to her, so seems to occur with their knowledge. We drank up and moved on. Wouldn't return there and definatly not a place to take kids.
butch_2000 - 29 Jul 2009 11:06
Was doing a crawl tonight and ended up here in the early part of the evening and found it pretty grotty... slighty grotty mix of customers and very poor beer, in fact the pint of london pride i tried would have been better kept to go top of chips... was sharper than gillettes finest.

Attractive pub from outside, but the inside, the interior, customers and drab selection of beverage does not match up with exterior, 7.5 for outside, no where near it for the actual pub.
SW2boy - 28 Jul 2009 00:48
Despite working close by in neighbouring Victoria, until a recent weekday afternoon, the area of Pimlico had remained unexplored by this usually eager reviewer. The first pub encountered and in fact, my sole stop was the Cask Marquee accredited Prince Of Wales. First impressions are decent enough with a tidy looking, traditional exterior, coupled with several fully occupied benches. Sadly, within, you are confronted with a rather tatty interior with little in the way of interesting features or architecture. Seating consists of a row of stools alongside the bar and several accommodating tables towards the other end of the room. I would have felt rather bored during mu stay, if it were not for the surprisingly good array of tunes that got an airing: early-Madonna, Travelling Wilburys, Slade and Status Quo. My ears were suitably soothed at least. Clientele during my stay consisted of evident regulars and a few stray office-types The atmosphere seemed jovial enough. Disappointingly, choice at the bar was a little more restricted than expected, with only two of the six hand pumps being in operation: London Pride and TT Landlord. The latter was priced at 3.10 and served a little too warm. There were two hardworking buxom barmaids present to serve and both were smiley and pleasant during their tittle-tattle with the locals. To conclude: overall, an OK local If here could improve the ale selection and tidy up the interior, then I suppose this potential patron could swing by again.

Old men reeking of pipe tobacco, local builders, students. All life dwells here. Eschewing the high end nature of the other establishments in the area, the Prince Of Wales stands still in its own personal realm. A soapy pint of London Pride remains your reward if you stray from the premium lagers that the majority of the patrons imbibe here, but that is not what this place is about. I have a soft spot for places like the Prince Of Wales, and I quite liked it here. Recommended for people watching.
Misk. - 5 Jun 2009 02:19
Seen much better days.... starting to attact a rough element.

Committment to real beer poor.
jamesbartlett74 - 23 May 2009 16:00
I stop off in the POWales quite regularly - I like tired pubs, see review below, and yes the staff are pretty good here. Customers in non office turnout hours are mixed bunch in age, voices, swearing capability etc. Anyway usually a good pint of Pride to be had. Tables outside for better weather and to watch the bustle of people shopping and making their way to and from Victoria train & bus stations - quite a parade sometimes. And they do nobbys nuts.
gonetolunch - 16 Mar 2009 19:30
Middling sort of pub - Abbot (on) and GK IPA (off). Nothing special, but I've been to plenty worse...
rpadam - 21 Nov 2008 23:32
The Pub is a great little boozer, locals and bar staff very welcoming but whats happened to Sherri?! Now i must say this young woman was the life and soul of the bar, no matter what time of day you came in, always there, always happy, always laughing, very infectious! It honestly made you want to stay longer... I am sure thats the whole point of a local...
James83 - 4 Aug 2008 10:59
Watch out for short measures and light-fingered staff, who'll short-change you.
davidb - 29 May 2008 17:50
I like this pub. You can go in here and nobody will disturb you if you just want a pint and to read. The staff are friendly and place is usually kept clean and tidy.

I have seen quite a few people in suits here including myself. I have not experienced any problems.
Kerrminator - 9 May 2008 14:16
Nipped in for a quick pint while passing through the area. First impressions weren't great, rather tired pub throughout and staff didn't seem awfully happy to see someone in a suit. As noted previously this is very much a regulars pub, and while it's not uncomfortable being an outsider it's not the kind of place I would go if alone and just looking for a place for a quick beer. Indeed, the free WiFi is not well advertised and I get the impression that breaking out a laptop would draw a few funny looks. Prices were on the high side of average: 3.10 for a Kronenbourg.
fredrix - 19 Nov 2007 17:23
Friendly pub with friendly service. Obviously a "regulars" pub, but they are very welcoming. Beer was good, but not tried the food. Shame it so small, and could do with a bit of makeover - the toilets in particular.

blueallover - 1 Aug 2007 09:59
We went in Prince of Wales on Saturday night on a weekend trip to London and thought it was great. The weather was pants and it was pouring with rain so diving into a cosy little pub like this was exactly what we needed. Beer was fine and not extortionately priced. Only grumble was the ladies toilets *shudders* - grubby grubby grubby
anonymous - 2 Jul 2007 14:01
Very much a 'drinkers' pub. Over the last few months there has been a BIG improvement. The food is pretty decent bar-type fare. The ales (and surprisingly wines) are in good nick.

The location could hardly be better, being only 8 minutes walk from Buckingham Palace, two minutes from Victoria Station and a few minutes more from Horshuards, Whitehall and the rest.

'Mine Host' is John a good and funny landlord.
magicbrian - 3 May 2007 17:55
Nice benches outside on a quiet side street away from the traffic, lovely pint of Pride, very low-key, just gets on with the business of being a decent boozer with no fuss or attention-seeking gimmicks.
beaucoup_fish - 13 Apr 2007 11:18
Baffled by the comments on this page. Know the area well and if its a cheerful local with a proper pub atmosphere and decent beer your are after go to the Prince of Wales.
MikeJ - 3 Mar 2007 10:14
Admittedly I went here a while ago (in October - it's now Feb), but I can say without reservation this is worst pub I have been to in London.

My friend and I came here after a running race in Hyde Park (walked for a bit afterwards, natch) and ended up ordering food.

Despite me ordering first, my friend's arrived first. I continued to wait, over a pint of very badly kept ale, for 45 minutes. Only when I went inside to prompt the barman, did he 'remember' and put my order through.

It arrived, soon afterwards, cold. Unfortunately there had been a change of bar staff by then, and the manager had gone AWOL. Attempts by the friendly bar girl to ring him failed.
tbp - 13 Feb 2007 17:39
I don't know why everyone is bashing this pub?!! A friendly local pub with good pub grub and a decent pint served by friendly staff. Nothing fancy but a good pub!
Clarry - 4 Feb 2007 15:03
Great little pub, the London Pride and Timmy Taylors is fantastic. Also had a very hot chilli bowl here and it was to die for. would recomend this pub to anyone.
anonymous - 20 Jan 2007 15:57
Better pubs are available nearby. Ok for a quick pint but nothing much else.
WaitorseBoyz - 16 Jan 2007 15:05
i used to frequent this pub alot and have not been it for quite a while but was in the area again and thought i would go back, it was absolutely terrible the beer tasted flat the food took forever and the staff grunted I can honestly say that I will never be back in this dive again and would recommend that all shpuld avoid, its going back to the bad old days of Gallaghers a real shame..
anonymous - 16 Jan 2007 14:11
Reasonable standard pub if you are in need of such a thing - nothing special and certainly not worth going out of the way for but perfectly competent at what it tries. I suppose the best thing about it is that you can usually get a seat.
trousers - 16 Jan 2007 10:28
The Prince is a real find in Pimlico, just far enough away from the bussel of commuters (unless your in a rush to get home that is) but an excellant lookout spot for watching the world and people go by! Always a varied crowd in with lots to say so can call in at any time and be chatty with bar staff or fellow drinkers- suits me perfect.
anonymous - 15 Jan 2007 22:58
This pub is the dogs bollox (sorry to swear, let's call it nuts instead!) I'm a London weekly commuter, living in foreign parts at weekends - ok South Manchester! I can safely say this is the friendliest pub I've found anywhere south of Watford Gap! Keep it going! Pop in & I'll buy you a pint!
anonymous - 15 Jan 2007 22:42
Visited this old haunt the other day to see if it was still the same old p.o.w circa 1980 that i remember.
It was always crammed to the gunnel's with London transport crews from the garage next door.

I should of read the recent reviews here especially David b who has got it described in one, before venturing.
The Pub has been destroyed by bar staff that don't give a shit, a landlord that has his little group of admirers all huddled together like a pack of frozen penguin's and a few punters dotted around nestling from the cold wet weather outside.
we finished our drinks and ventured outside, even with the rain and wind it felt warmer and less damp than the dump we had just left...!

clapham - 11 Dec 2006 12:10
oh.no... not again.... not another of my good boozers gone. please remember, its the manager/licencee and staff who make the pub inviting for the punter. give up now. replace the staff or lose another pub.. this is another f**k up by the owners who seem that they dont care.... guess it must be hard to get staff with personalities these days!!!!!
cannon - 18 Nov 2006 09:04
Gone down hill like a turd in a high-pressure sewer pipe.
Licensees spend all their time smoking at the far end of the bar, even when punters are waiting to be served by amateurish staff (BTW, rapid staff turnover - never seen any of them there more than once).
Expect short measures and short change.
Avoid.
davidb - 11 Oct 2006 14:59
finally back to my old haunt. got to admit its still has not got the sparkle it used to have. but still a good pint served here and friendly staff.
cannon - 10 Apr 2006 09:06
i disagree with the comment on unhelpful staff i regularly frequent this pub and its a hidden gem in this unusual area the staff were fantastic and the landlord was very hospitable(if very lucky to have a beautiful lady on his arm)would recommend this pub to anyone

anonymous - 5 Mar 2006 18:08
Has potential intimate, good location, decent beer, friendly service, no TV but really needs to sort out its smoke extractor problems. I realise some people come to London hoping to witness one of our famed pea-soupers, but dont think it necessary to recreate the Great Smog of 1952 inside a pub.

Also, sadly, let down by some of the younger bar staff who would much rather talk to their mates than serve waiting customers. Could do better.

anonymous - 25 Jan 2006 15:44
Truly excellent old style boozer in a very unpromising area for that sort of pub. Good, if unexceptional, selection of ales (GK IPA, London Pride, Adnam's bitter and OSH) but really good ambience and surroundings.
Joe_Cundy - 11 Jan 2006 17:26
What happened to this one. it was a gem. still is good but a change of landlord really changes a pub. still a great place to go, but lost a bit of its appeal to me. but will still go back for a quick one to see how things are going.
cannon - 1 Jun 2005 22:28
A place you're happy to spend a few hours in - something rare in the public house desert that is Victoria. Staff are friendly and efficient and the beer decently kept. Worth a look, but don't all come at once because it's too small for all of us...
davidb - 26 Apr 2005 13:58
Tiny friendly pub - would want a bit more from a place for a 'night out' but great for an intimate pint with mix of locals and randoms
benjamin22 - 7 Apr 2005 16:02
Great pub due to the friendly staff, the very attentive manager, and the freshest Guinness in London. Easy place to meet locals and tourists; nice mix of people; good restaurants nearby!
Tburrows - 3 Feb 2005 21:33
its everything you need for a great night out. staff with personalities (wow!)and great beer (even better!) and no tv (no football....thank god!!). what else could anyone ask for. dont just take my opinion go and see it for yourself.......
cannon - 26 Dec 2004 16:19
The staff are always very friendly and don't look at you as if your alien which is quite rare in these parts. The landlady always remembers my name even though I only visit occasionally. There is usually a good atmosphere with great music. Most importantly the beer is top quality. shame it's in a weird area. A little cracker. 8/10 P.S it has become female friendly unlike before under the former owmers.
Isabella - 20 Oct 2004 01:14
The only pub in the area without television: they pride themselves on this. So not the place to go if you want to watch football, but an ok place to have a drink.
beeronaut - 27 Jun 2004 09:33
Good food, Cold beer, Friendly staff. What more could you ask of a pub.
John Dude - 25 Jan 2004 14:44
missed the stella, but great that it now back, great staff, nice atmosphere, generally good pub.
Paul - 14 Jan 2004 20:49
cozy pub, clean loos, food OK though my lamb was pretty tough after sitting in the carvery all day. Good beers and friendly staff. No TV, no crap music.
Evan Thornton - 22 Nov 2003 00:01
This is a 7/10 purely for the friendly bar staff. I don't like the pub itself much at all!
Clare - 24 Oct 2003 13:42
best pub in the world, coz of the fantastic staff!
MS - 29 Sep 2003 21:08
was a scary dive before the makeover. does a good speckled hen. frequented sometimes by strange local drunks.
staff are friendly - been there three times in three months and landlady still recognises us. only complaint is that the bangers + mash is ruined by crappy gravy.
dw - 22 Sep 2003 23:27
not sure about the last comment, definitely have nothing against the beer, some of the best ales i've tasted so far, and the nachos are to die for. i'll be back
impressed kiwi - 6 Aug 2003 21:26
It's ok if you don't mind all your beer to have the haziness of the Hoegaarden. My fried loves it because this is the closest place to find the Belgian stuff
Mark Robins - 3 Aug 2003 14:24
beautiful atmosphere and great if you want to chat to locals and also lost tourists.
john - 25 Jul 2003 16:02
ridiculously friendly staff who actually remember your name when you go back a month later. Great to while away the hours sitting outside on a summer's day. I think I might adopt this as my local!
NDH - 25 Jul 2003 10:38
fab pub, great staff excellent real ale and delicious food
andrew - 21 Jul 2003 21:27
yeah it's a really classy place. heaps of friendly people in the area. the staff are great too and wont be afraid to hold a conversation with you about something other than the weather. the guys have a good taste in music too. thumbs up from me.
JK - 20 Jul 2003 22:26
A great pub attracting members of the local community plus visitors looking for a friendly, traditional atmosphere. Great staff, great food, great drinks, great time, what more can you ask for?!
pub conisseur - 16 Jul 2003 21:28
Recently refurbished and opened under a new name ( previously gallaghers ) attractive food menu, and the refurb has done wonders attracting a whole new clientele. Also has comfy benches outside it for afternoon sun drinking etc.. Worth a visit if your in the area.
