Reborn as a trendy craft beer pub, and though I would normally lament such a development I have to say it is very good. Loads of beers on (mostly of the American pale ale variety), good vino for the ladies, and 2-4-1 pizza on a Monday, could become a regular haunt!

I have been in here a few times and it is a very comfortable pub even though the selection of beers is rather limited. Occasionally there is the dreaded and totally unnecessary pop music to be heard but not constantly. Friday night's should be avoided by any sane person as that's when they have wannabe pop singers and karaoke . The best time is during the day when it is quite civilised and a good pub for a quiet chat and a bit of a laugh.

Lovely little pub with very friendly staff! And I have heard it is Steve Fox's new local :-)

From what I see from sitting in this pub now, it is alright. Nice staff, clients and beer. A real pub I am pleased to say. Ahh, and here comes Cidermaster now!

Nice little quite pub. Doesnt serve food, but the landlord/landlady didnt have a problem with us bringing our own fish and chips. Jukebox 1GBP for 3 songs, a bit out dated though.

This really is a great pub.

-Friendly staff
-Superb landlord and landlady
-Well-kept beer
-Good juke box
-Big screen sports with great atmosphere (free sandwiches at half time)
-No trouble

What more could you ask for?
bricktop - 6 Nov 2008 17:31
I disagree about the real ale - they do a great pint of Flowers Original

I like this pub. Its a locals pub and its got locals inside. If that puts you off then.. well.. good.
Plus points:
+ Great if you like lager, more so if you like Stella, they serve one of the best pints in south london.
+ Love the jukeboxes, nice pooltable, weird poker arcade machine from the 1890's.
+ Big screen.
+ Great Staff, I rarely wait long for my stella and the Landlord and Landlady bring around sandwiches. The Polish girls are really friendly and Caroline is gorgeous ;O)

Only bad point is that some of the clients have terrible language, even to offend me! lol

This pub was the dogs bollocks back in the 80's. Have'nt been in there in years, so will have to give it a visit to see if any of the 80's locals are still around.

'Not too hot on the real ales, unfortunately' says a reviewer below. That's a bit of an understatement- I get the feeling that the landlords actually actively hate real ales- they pulled down a poster advertising the Battersea beer festival after just two days, replacing it with another of those generic Carling/Sky Sports/what's on this month on the big screen posters. Come to this pub if you like the most average, bland, unremarkable, dull pub in existence- if your idea of fun revolves around Carling, Sky TV, Fosters and other similar pub rubbish. Would you like proper beer, proper conversation and an atmosphere where the oxygen has not been replaced in its entirety by smoke particles? Best go elsewhere (and I do, although I live 3 mins walk away).

Was in last night watching arsenal playing really badly(whats new!) Had a great time.
Loved the touch of the barstaff offering free sandwiches. Reasonably priced beer too but not too hot on the real ales unfortunately.
rabidbarfly - 8 Mar 2007 13:42
good little pub for locals but not one i would go out of my way for. its deffinatly the best in tooting for a quiet beer
westyw9 - 23 Feb 2007 17:27
I tend not to do re-reviews of pubds but I'm going to make an exception for the Rose

The more I go the better it gets - not flash in any way but just a really comfortable place to have a drink and the landlord/lady and staff make you feel very welcome.

The fact that this pub does not do food (other than the plates of sandwiches mentioned by other reveiwers) is a ver good sign - it means that they focus on serving drinks rather than worrying about the kitchen

Has become my boozer of choice in the last few months
murgatroyd - 11 Feb 2007 20:12
The Rose and Crown is simply amazing! It is the only pub in London to make me feel at home since I moved to london a year ago.

Me and my housemates regularly pop in for one on a Friday or Saturday night and usually end up staying for the night. Bernie and Lilly, who own the place, are so so so lovely and all the locals will become your best friends in minutes.

The Karaoke (every Friday and Saturday) is so much fun and nobody cares if you are really crap....most people are. Linda, who runs the Karaoke on a Saturday, is awesome. She is so old school and loves to belt out a few classics herself. Love her!

Get down there to have lots of fun with all the Tooting locals, have a few nice drinks, a bit of a sing song and a dance before the night finishes. Awesome.

An ex local of mine! Wonderful place with properly trained staff. No pretensions and nice people on an evening. The landlord obviously knows his salt. No food except crisps and the odd sandwich tray going round. The selection of drinks is bog standard but they still have a couple of Keg Bitters on sale!!! It's the only place I've every been where I've enjoyed a pint of Flowers Original so that's saying something. They have Pedigree (nah) and Special on too.

mitomighty - 10 Dec 2006 15:20
Good place for a quiet pint in the lounge and to watch sport in the sport bar. Karaoke is hilarious at times and bar staff handing out sandwiches is appreciated after a few pints
Nora - 6 Dec 2006 13:39
evrytime i hit tooting we hit this lovely place, sick ofshiny looking pubs love this little gem it's a proper pub and has a wicked atmosphere
scotney - 30 Nov 2006 00:09
Hahahaha... was the 20-something singing Chas and Dave about 2 weeks ago? Was it Rabbit?

Guilty as charged, your honour. Glad you liked it - back there tomorrow when I'll reprise it...
dickybt - 17 Nov 2006 14:14
Love this pub so so so very much!!!!

Karaoke on a Friday and Saturday is entertainment, esp. the old man who sings Will Young and Robbie Williams, proof that you should in no way judge a book by its cover.

Talking of which, Chas and Dave sung by a 20-something??? Absolute classic!

anonymous - 11 Oct 2006 21:02
It sometimes gets busy Friday or Sat nights but not unpleasantly so. Usually when they do the karaoke which is sometimes hilarious to watch! Trust me on that one.Loads of lagers and flowers original, young's special and pedigree on handpump usually. Landlord obviously knows his salt as staff ar well trained. Shows up other better known pubs in this respect.

Downside is the right hand bar which can get a bit lairy when the chelsea mob are in but only in a noisy, smokey way. Not the best place to watch a big game.

A funny one, the Rose and Crown. I moved nearby some time ago, but it took me four or five months before I ventured in. It always seemed slightly daunting from the outside; made me feel I'm not quite Local enough, although I've lived in Tooting three years.
But the Rose is actually rather pleasant. Only been a few times now, but the staff are friendly, and there's a good choice of beers (ie not just lager). Peculiar music policy. Good place for a quiet pint or three and a good chinwag. Not been there on a busy night though - does it have busy nights??
Jamiebgoode - 16 Apr 2006 15:18
A really decent local boozer - staff and landlord are efficient and friendly

You get a few noxious drunks in the side bar but mostly genuine characters. For most of us the front bar is preferable.

Managed to retain the ambience of a good South London pub without succumbing to the effluent that inhabit Spoons or the Hoorays making their way ever further down the Northern line from Clapham
murgatroyd - 6 Apr 2006 20:37
I suggested this pub in June 2003, and 2 1/2 years on I'm moving back to Tooting. First stop, the Rose!
dickybt - 20 Dec 2005 14:09
What I like about this place is that everyone wants to have a good time here and if you avoid London football games everyone is really nice, a mixed bunch and they seem to want YOU to have a good time too! The Staff are removed but SPOT ON. The landlord seems to know the coup! I love footie but would generally avoid watching it here BUT if I had a spare evening at the weekend I would come here everytime!! SAT NIGHT YEAH!!
anonymous - 11 Dec 2005 00:46
My local. Not the brightest of pubs, but clean, safe and fun. On the plus side: good clean beer, big screen for football, nice management/barstaff, good mix of people (usually), and hilarious kareoke complete with Elvis. On the down side: Chelsea fans aplenty, beer is'nt cheap and they don't do any munchies. Overall: 8/10
Dr.T - 9 Dec 2005 12:18
The bar with the footie is a bit boycey but OK but the real delight are the Karaoke evenings at the weekend. Marvellous - you'll be surprised at what you see - professional level yodelling, spoon playing, opera singers, the obligatory Elvis - great stuff. A decent local.
mitomighty - 29 Nov 2005 15:43
its a good traditional pub, recently renovated, all the staff are friendly and polite.its true it is a chelsea pub but ive never had a problem in there and i support spurs. When the footballs on its agreat atmosphere plenty of banter and mickey taking all in good humour.cant knock it 9/10.
poolshark - 19 Aug 2005 14:19
Great pub if you like Chelsea. If you dont people think you are gay. Which I am not. I like girls. Good laugh on a saturday night with the karaoke, except when some 40 somehting drunk guy keeps singing Neil Diamond songs and winking at old women. Thats wrong, surely?
hardboiledegg - 5 Aug 2005 14:12
I love this place - a real pub where you can feel you have escaped from London.

It is very much a locals pub, but I go in here about once a month and get made to feel very welcome.

They have a cheesy disco/karoake on a Friday and Saturday night which is amusing even if it's not your usual thing.

I'm very surprised about the comment from the user below re. the old gent. I can only imagine that there was some history there that the user didn't know about - this place really knows how to look after its locals and has had the same staff for the 7 years I've been living in Balham.

Very good Flowers Original.
anonymous - 15 Jun 2005 17:52
Not too bad after being done up, but I was disgusted to see an old gent being told he wasn't drinking quick enough, having his pint taken off him and being made to leave. He even had to ask for his money back. Terrible behaviour.
Dano - 17 Sep 2004 11:29
Aaron, when were there EVER Gunners boys in there? Never. It's a Chelski pub and has been since year dot.
Rich - 5 Aug 2004 17:46
Great Love it to bits. Come on chelsea
Luke - 28 May 2004 11:20
Great local pub. Been drinking in there for about a year and loved it each time!! Come on you blues
Luke - 28 May 2004 11:13
This used to be my local from 99' - 2000' - sounds like all the old Gunners boys have moved out and the Chelsea lads have moved in. Shame.
Aaron - 13 May 2004 04:25
This is my local, I love it.... simple as......

John - 25 Mar 2004 15:36
It's being refurbished at the moment anyway. They're putting windows into the lounge bar at the back, moving the toilets to the back of the pub & opening it up a bit. It's just sad that this place and the Wheatsheaf are the only 2 pubs left in Tooting pretty much - by 'pub' I don't mean some identikit Slug & Lettuce.

If you want that sort of thing, jump on the bus, jump on the tube, or just jump off a cliff for all I care. Just don't spoil the few remaining pubs left in the area.
Rich - 25 Mar 2004 14:05
I think the Rose and Crown is ace. The bar staff are friendly, and they've got a decent juke box - essential to any good pub. OK it's not been tarted up but the presence of leather sofa's and the promise of rocket with your cheese toastie don't always make for a good boozer.
Jenna - 13 Jan 2004 12:38
This pub's also my local - certainly not as rough as it used to be in the days when you could buy/hire power tools over the bar but still get random tantrums from Chelsea fans when their team's losing. Go to the wheatsheaf opposite tooting bec tube just up the road if rough, ready, irish and authentic is your thing. If you like things a little more 'clapham' smoke's just a little further past the tube and sells over-priced drinks in nice surroundings.
anonymous - 5 Nov 2003 20:13
not a bad pub, just by no means a great pub. do not cheer for team playing Chelsea, other than that, you will be fine
oliver penney - 5 Nov 2003 17:04
In an area with a chronic lack of drinking venues, this place should be laughing. Sadly, the complete lack of ambience (bad music, bad lighting, bad decor etc) means that it's usually empty. It could be so great, but no one seems to be bothered about changing it.
Bill - 5 Nov 2003 16:43
big chelsea fans pub and great atmosphere for any chelsea game, they even lay on free sandwiches at half-time, other than that quiet, cheap, no frills pub
Aaron - 23 Oct 2003 16:52
Ironically my "local". So dull I would rather go to any other pub in Tooting for a night out. One virtue is that on a Friday after work it is usually pretty quiet so you can get a drink without having to queue and there are plenty of seats available. Not bad just uninspiring
Justin - 9 Sep 2003 12:03
The landlord looks like Dirty Den from EastEnders
Gary - 3 Jul 2003 17:28
Traditional Saaf London boozer. Pool table, 3 fruit machines, darts, big screen Sky. Public and saloon bars, ladies in the back, men in front. A pub for your purist. Has a reputation of being a bit rough - unfounded in my opinion. Look out for the local Elvis impersonator who turns up from time to time.
