please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Drove past yesterday and I think there was a notice on the gate indicating the place had closed down. I hope I'm wrong but that's the way it looked

This is my favourite eating place. The beer is fine, although I am a wine drinker. The menu has a good choice, the food is excellent and is good value. The service is very friendly and attentive. The chef is happy to suggest dishes which are not on the menu at the time, or to prepare something you particularly like. We keep going back.
browserandsluiver - 10 Jan 2012 13:30
Yes this is a restaurant not so much a pub so take it for what it is.
These one hit comments do stink I have to say,my baby woke and the chef went and cooked him something, Really get real !!!!

We have been to the Barn twice now and both times were very impressed. The Sunday lunch is superb - lovely local meat, perfect vegetables in copious quantities, excellent roasties and all served quickly and courteously. The staff cannot do enough, they are polite and friendly and are always offering to bring extras of everything. My three year old liked the Yorkshire puddings so much that they brought him three more and he ate free! Children are welcomed with open arms generally. Yesterday the chef was taking a break at the end of lunch service, but when my baby woke up, she spotted him and immediately offered to go back to the kitchen to make something for him. I cannot say enough good things about this place. We live 30 minutes away by car, but will be coming back as often as we can. So glad we found it. Ignore the 6.6 rating - if I could rate it 11, I would.
Castlehardy - 28 Nov 2011 15:40
To be fair it is not a pub, its a resturant, good food, but no pub atmosphere what so ever.
greengu11 - 16 Nov 2011 10:58
It`s a give away when someone posts a one off comment saying `Amazing,Spectaclar` etc etc.
Nope not having any of it thankyou very much.
No rating given either.

I have never before felt the need to comment on a pub or its food, however, after visiting The Barn, I felt I should.

I'll keep it brief.

My family and I went for sunday lunch, I had the pork, my partner had the beef and out daughters had chicken (The kids ate free)

The food was faultless, absolutely delicious, the REAL roast potatoes were cooked to perfection, all were served with an absolute wealth of vegetables, all of which were cooked and served perfectly.

The puddings were quite obviously homemade and nothing short of spectacular. Many pubs fail on puddings as they use items that have obviously been bought in.

The staff were amazing, very polite, very helpful and very friendly. This in itself is something of a rarity.

The pub itself was very warm, comfortable and very had a great atmosphere.

We live about 15 miles away but will not hesitate to return. It's definitely worth the drive and the food was great value for money.

I booked a table for my wife and I last Friday and pre-ordered a Paella. Wow! it was fantastic, easily the best I've had. The service also was second to none and we were fussed over by Carolyn (who is as tasty as the food) and her staff. This is a great place to eat where we were made very welcome. I will find it difficult not to become addicted to eating here and have already made another booking.

Hi,
i am the one of the owners of the alfold barn. thank you for all your comments some good some bad. it is a good way for us to see where we might be going wrong. I would like to clear up the comment from borderterrier. This lady had a booking with us on one of our busiest days, a Saturday night. She failed to turn up and we turned other people away as her table was reservedfor her and we were full.. the next day we left messages to make sure we had not got the date wrong and the booking was for another saturday. we had no reply until the following thursday, when my wife Carolyn managed to get through to her. (she had still made no attempt to call us to explain) we were told in a very curt manner that we were not a priority for her.
We are in a recession and every pound is the difference between survival and closure...a very real prospect in these hard times. This lady has no regard for small family run business'. For no contact for over five days is unforgivable. i hope this clears up the issue, and i do hope she never has to worry about a small thing like making money to pay bills.
scottmaguire - 7 Oct 2011 17:25
i think you are lucky, you've only experience the rudeness(and very snobby) attitude on the phone, not while you are there, giving them money
littlecon - 6 Oct 2011 10:37
I would love to be able to review our experience of The Barn was, however due to unforseen circumstances (we were involved in an accident on our way there that evening), we never made it.

This morning i received a very stroppy call from a woman called Carolyn rudely questioning me as to why we never showed up for our reservation, there is a polite way to make such a call to a customer, and whilst i appreciate we should have called to explain it was not a priority that night! Despite my explaining the situation to her she was still seemingly unable to be courteous or at the very least professional.

I guess we won't be trying The Barn @ Alfold!
Borderterrier - 6 Oct 2011 09:42
i must admit i have had the bad luck on a midweek of turning up later and finding the barn closed. as it is more of a restaurant than pub, they cut their cloth accordingly. i have always found it best to book midweek.
neil10 - 9 Sep 2011 11:51
Could not get in the other Thur`s night at 9 pm lights on but no one at home Mmmmmmmmmm.
ThePilgrim - 19 Aug 2011 19:55
Comments gone missing I see, Mmmm does the truth hurt ?????

i frequent this establishment at least once a month, and invariably go for the duck. in fact i normally order it because they change the menu every day. it is tender moist and cooked to perfection. i am not a chef but it seems to me the hotter a meat is inside the more well done it will be.....any chefs out there? the food is always very good and the family that run it are always courtious and bubbly. if they were rude i wouldn't like to think what this customer must have done. we will be back as usual next month, see you then alfold barn.
thevirg02 - 18 Mar 2011 10:34
i am soooo shocked by the last comment. the lamb is one of my favourites at the barn, and it certainly does not come out of a packet. the meat is tender and slowly cooked over several hours, as any person with cooking knowledge would agree. i love the selection of vegetables you get (as part of your meal) and the choice of potatoes is staggering, home made chips are a real treat. as to the owner wearing shorts...he does. that doesn't put me off a place, a girl can wear a short skirt and this reviewer would be happy i suppose. having spoken to the family several times over my visits, it is more than apparent that they wouldn't know how to use a microwave, let alone do all the cooking from one. i wonder if this person made his comments to the owners on the evening, or perhaps he likes to make stories up....
neil10 - 18 Oct 2010 19:03
Really????? I do not understand these good reviews i have eaten here once and shall not return in hurry. Theres a "barman" in shorts the wine comes from a tap on the bar and the food seems to be needing a microwave technician not a chef. There was 6 of us in the party i had a lamb shank, which looked lovely until you got to the meat under the gravy. The meat was dry with burnt edges. The gravy was there to try and hide the fact the meat was out of a packet and over cooked, there rest of the meals were of the same standard. A real pity as i am local and the building is fantastic.
theseal - 16 Oct 2010 10:54
went here with a large group from london, for st georges day. we had a set two course lunch which was outstanding. there were 30 odd of us and the food came out so fast. i have never had such a good roast dinner. we will be back.
liam21271 - 2 May 2010 11:28
Dont live in the area but was coming back from holiday and tried to avoid traffic on the M25 and stopped here for a meal. It was very busy but the lovely waitress looked after us and managed to fit us in. It was a great end to our holiday, the food was great. I had a squid starter and one of the best steaks I have had in years for my main meal. My wife didn't have a starter but loved her home made steak and kidney pie, not sure how she managed but she also had banofee pie. My wife also had to finish the drive home to Oxford as I enjoyed the good selection of red wines. I will definitely drive this way to and from Gatwick airport in future. There was a chap in shorts as mentioned in previous reviews but he seemed harmless enough despite being a little stressed as it was so busy, also gave me and my wife something to talk about as it was very cold outside, not really weather for shorts and deck shoes.
squire - 20 Mar 2010 23:38
amazing building and amazing owners. i wish this was my local, the food is top restaurant quality without the stupid pricing. i will be back, and the bloke in shorts was really quite friendly.....see you again soon.
georgejames - 4 Mar 2010 19:55
i am quite surpised by the last comment, as they don't do a bar menu....very odd. would this person be genuine or not? you be the judge. I go here at least once a month. the pies are the best you will try...and i mean the best, none of this pie lid trash. and the family i have grown to like very much are very friendly, maybe roythebike has attitude. they don't suffer fools believe me!!!
neil10 - 2 Mar 2010 20:23
Having read all the poor reviews of the Fox down the road, I went to this place on a saturday lunchtime. Place was full of smoke and I mean choking, eye watering, nauseating smoke. Something wrong with the fireplace evidently. Anyway, geezer in the shorts shouts out "you booked in with us?" Answer no, so am told to "go sit in there and I'll bring you the bar snacks menu". Very little grace about the fella. "In there" was this smoke filled room, so we continued right out the door and went to the fox. Clearly doesn't need new custom so good luck.
RoyTheBike - 21 Feb 2010 16:27
i am stunned by the last two views....what pompous old fashioned people. the food is good and the service is great, what more do you want.
I know for a fact this guy always wears shorts and always has. we have been going here for over five years now and its always been the same.

neil10 - 27 Oct 2009 18:46
"guy waiting tables did so in shorts and a polo shirt, not quite what you might expect"

You are correct jolly_local. Not what I or, any of our friends would expect here !

We haven't visited for some months now so will ask friends who live across the road what has changed ?
FAB1 - 11 Oct 2009 18:46
Had lunch on a friday, great building and very good food.

Service a little slow and guy waiting tables did so in shorts and a polo shirt, not quite what you might expect.

Having said that he was very attentive and friendly.

Good pub.
jolly_local - 2 Oct 2009 14:37
Cracking pub, if you want to eat. Not sure if it is really a drinkers' pub. However, my friend and I have been three times now for Sunday lunch (you have to book) and the food has been fantastic - outstanding! The staff are friendly and very attentive and if you want seconds of veg or roast tatties with your roast, no problem.
HerbieSpike - 21 Jul 2009 17:34
lovely garden, amazingly well kept adnams broadside. shame it is the only real ale, but at least it is in tip top condition. food was llovely and the kids ate free. ( you can't beat that in a recession)
nealstanten - 18 Jun 2009 11:29
we have had a knightmare getting in here to eat. we must have tried four times and they were always full. I am glad we perservered, the food was outstanding, and the whole ambience amazing. i had the fruit de mer and it is eye popping and so fresh. definitely book in advance.
sophier1905 - 13 Jun 2009 13:05
i cannot praise this place enough....in this modern era of no service, this establishment has gone one step up...you get treated like you are eating at a michelin star restaurant. the food is brilliant and you get lots of it. for sunday lunch you actually get offered more during the meal..in a recession! we will definitely be going back, if only for the fact our kids ate FREE.
davesomg - 10 Jun 2009 09:10
had a great meal here again, sounds boring to keep enjoying a place doesn't it? the service was amazing and the building always enthrawls me.
neil10 - 9 Jun 2009 18:54
As noted below, this is definately more of a resturant than a pub, but the beer is more than decent.
A lovely old barn in the middle of nowhere, the food here is some of the best I've tasted for years, eaten in a lovely atmosphere with very efficient and exceptionaly friendly service. Ideal for a summer evening meal on the way back from the coast.
flashharry1965 - 27 May 2009 09:07
very nice pub/bar and restaurant. quality food and a very good well kept real ale. i would advise booking as we were very lucky to get a table.
jsamson89 - 22 Apr 2009 19:44
this has got to be the most atmospheric place i have been in years. i went as i read a brilliant write up in the surrey advertiser, and i was not disappointed. the food is top notch and the staff are very attentive and friendly. customer service is not dead!
kalbright - 17 Apr 2009 20:45
amazing food, amazing building and very nice owners. not exactly the place for a beer night out, but the adnams was served to perfection.
simonw99 - 8 Apr 2009 13:12
my husband and i went here on a midweek evening in february. the place was very quiet, so we were a bit worried...you know what they say. i had the fillet steak and my other half had the fish and chips. i have never seen a piece of fish so big. it was to die for...probably caught that day from the freshness. my steak was mouthwatering and so tender, i didn't need the steak knife. why is a place like this quiet.....they should be beating people away from the door.
cazz02 - 19 Mar 2009 19:44
went again last sunday. the roast dinner was amazing, they offer more potatoes and vegetables and you don't have to pay extra for it. also our kids ate FREE.... how good is that. we will be visiting very regularly over the summer hols with the little ones.
squeeler24 - 19 Mar 2009 19:37
i haven't been here for ages, went for valentines and it was out of this world. i hope it stays a secret so that me and my friends can keep it to ourselves.
neil10 - 18 Mar 2009 20:00
absolutely outstanding. this gastropub has no rivals, for quality and service. they do a two course lunch for 5....no this is not a misprint. one of surreys best kept secrets.
mike52 - 18 Mar 2009 19:23
outstanding by any standards but a bit pricey
FAB1 - 17 Dec 2008 06:42
Had a lovely meal here and beer is well kept.I agree this is far more a restaurant than a pub but all the same good service and we will be back.
Beersupper - 8 Dec 2008 10:53
Splendid food, served by a loquacious and charming landlady. Not really a pub for a quiet pint but, as a pub-cum-restaurant, this is one of the better ones in Surrey.
Tobias_the_Pickler - 15 Aug 2008 01:08
Went again on last Sunday in August 2007 with another friend. Yet again, superb food and service. We decided to share a starter and they plated them up on separate plates. Chocolate pot pudding was NOT shared and my friend, who is vegetarian, had the best veg hotpot she had ever tasted - true praise.

Have yet to go again, but will be there soon.
LadyHGG - 24 Apr 2008 14:09
More a restaurant than a pub, it is family run and the food and people are fantastic.

Well worth going to.
bar_runner - 21 Jan 2008 19:08
very good food, but i am not sure it should be on a pub site. lovely old building and the family that run it seem very friendly. this is not somewhere you would go for a drinking evening.
neil10 - 16 Nov 2007 20:01
Its not a pub, more a restaurant. Dropped by for a drinkm, but did not feel welcome
anonymous - 4 Oct 2007 19:42
Went with a friend to try out the food. Good quality, well-cooked delicious food and a chocolate pot to die for!! Service A1, friendly, fast. Food hot, freshly cooked and interesting selection for all tastes and pockets. Very popular for the older generation because of easy access.
LadyHGG - 15 Jul 2007 22:04
one of the best gastro pubs in the area...serving seafood and british home cooked food...lobster and crab at weekends. it has a lovely little snug bar before you go into the restaurant...open fire and warm welcome from a family run place.
sqeeler24 - 30 May 2007 11:06
this is a great place for top quality food and atmosphere. the pub is over 400 years old, with beams and open fires....excellent.
cazz02 - 26 May 2007 16:42
this is by far the best food in the whole area...i agree its not a pub, but my god can they look after customers in the restaurant. make a point of ringing to order a pie of your choice, they make them to order....how good is that?
sdvm - 17 May 2007 17:33
fantastic food, more of a restaurant than a typical pub. Very warm welcome and can accomodate large parties.
