This is really good. Top beer, staff really friendly & excellent food. Really cheap B&B with a marvellous breakfast. Stayed here three times now, can't recommend it highly enough

A very nicely looked after pub easily reached by tram fron Sheffield. Good choice of beers and knowledgeable staff, comfortable and spacious.
jennyjohnson - 9 Oct 2016 19:29
A spacious bar area which has evidently had a makeover recently. Good beers at good prices and well worth a visit on a crawl in the Hillsborough direction.
16jamesdoc - 21 Jun 2014 12:08
I have been to the pub for a beer before but this time I stayed overnight (good honest pub B&B). Large bar area plus conservatory and home-brewed ales - some of which I liked; others I thought not. Guests were from Rudgate; Fugelstou and Dukeries - all at good prices. Yes they use a sparkler but that's how they do it in Sheffield! (ask for it to be taken off if it is a problem). Good pub grub and they have regular live music sessions. Friendly staff and and overall a good visit. very easy to get to by tram - they stop just up the road.

After a disappointing 90 mins watching the Boro up at Hillsborough this was a great start to our post match pub crawl. Very good ale, excellent food and brilliant friendly service!
Alfnoax - 5 May 2013 18:29
Paid my first visit to the Hillsborough recently and was not impressed. Six handpumps offering beers from Rudgate and the pub's own Wood Street Brewery. My companion and I opted for the Wood Street Pale Ale, dispensed through a sparkler. The beer was hazy and flat. I returned the beers and asked for the sparkler to be removed. The beer was still flat. We cut our losses and left.
There is a pleasant terrace at the back of the pub offering views across the Don Valley. However, on this showing, I won't be rushing back.
holbornboy - 22 Apr 2013 21:14
a great way to start off our valley crawl. about 8 to 10 ales on tap. their own WSB (?) ales and about 4 from Oxforshire. don't judge the outside appearance, it's great inside!
juninhocrunch - 11 Dec 2012 11:00
They brew a very fine Ebony Stout here which made it difficult to resist coming back a few times on the tram. It only cost 2.50 a pint too.

The staff are friendly, service is prompt, and the Sunday lunch is pretty good. About 10 or 15 minutes' walk from the other very good pubs in the Kelham area.
apchilcott - 16 Oct 2012 21:04
On a recent day out in Sheffield this was one of our ports of call and it was well worth the tram ride to it. The brewery has apparently been recently renamed Woodstreet but I guess the beers are just as good as they ever were and the Woodstreet Pale was just about the best beer I drank all day. The hotel provides pleasant surroundings and prices are cheap! Recommended.

Booked in on Wednesday night as was working in the area. Enjoyable stay, friendly staff and good ale at a good price. What more could you want?

Superb pub: the Crown Brewery tap. Friendly welcome and relaxed atmosphere. Food and accommodation also on offer. A must visit when in Sheffield and easy to get to by tram.
wobblybob - 28 May 2011 23:34
The Crown Brewery tap, in an area of Sheffield that has seen better days and now is a testament to Britain's declining manufacturing industry. The pub, however, is an oasis, nicely fitted out with a conservatory to look out over the hills, the gas works and the Mecca bingo super centre surrounded by barbed wire. Around 8 real ales in excellent condition and highly convenient for the tram makes this pub weel worth a visit.
Abteilung - 21 Apr 2011 19:22
Gem of a pub by the tram lines - 8 ales on tap including 5 from the Crown brewery - a pint of 'Dislocation' was 2.20. The Traditional Bitter was very tasty. Cheaper than Devonshire with 2.90 for a 5.8% ale. Large pub extended out the back by the conservatory (careful greenhouse effect) with a small beer garden surrounding it. Ale pie, chips & mushy peas were lovely.
Booze_Allen - 20 Apr 2011 16:02
Well worth the tram ride out of town (get off at Langsett/Primrose View) to find this hotel-cum-pub-cum-brewery which offers good beers ; B&B and food as well as a traditional pub atmosphere in the bars. Handy if you're on your way to Sheffield Wednesday footie (but not as close as the New Barrack Tavern) but make the effort anyway to visit this bar and try their beers.
mcroyal - 16 Feb 2011 23:04
The Crown HPA is the best beer I've ever had and I've had more than a few in my time! Smashing pub. Another slightly out of the way Sheffield gem. Although this one is a bit easier to get to than some 'cos it' on the tram route.
JCsbrogues - 18 Oct 2010 16:21
First visit to this pub whilst visiting sheffield for the speedway. Very friendly pleasant barmaid, excellent choice of real ales, kept in very good condition, didnt try the meals as there were no menus present didnt think they were cooking but found out too late they were doing trad roasts, an excellent pub and definately one to visit when i do a sheffield real ale tour, great pub.
bellevueace - 26 Sep 2010 23:16
This pub will always be remembered for the meeting point for the CUFC away supporters who travelled to see Carlisle humble the Sheff Wendies in Sept 2010 (top of the league replaced by number two!) Yes it's a fantastic pub with great staff and a wonderful selection of beers, courteously offered through the Crown Brewery sat below the pub. The Hillsborough Pale Ale was good, the Stannington Stout nice but the Duke of "Whatever" tsted superb, an exceptional brew. Easy to reach by tram from the city if there's no big game on and a great view from the beer garden. I will be returning at some point.

Stayed here during this year's World Snooker Championship. This pub/b&b is a little out of town, but not so far that you cannot walk it and it is also right next to the tram route. We were all pleased by the beer selection, of which there was a mix of beer from their own brewery accompanied by some interesting guests; all were top notch, especially their own session bitter. Accommodation was very reasonably priced (20 each for 3 sharing) and came with a hearty fry up that set us all up for a day at The Crucible. Well worth a visit if you're looking for a great value, unpretentious b&b, or just a few pints. The tyres next door added to it somehow.
cheesyal - 31 Aug 2010 19:55
Good beer, great value, spotless, near the tram. An essential stop on the ale tram route.
dry_riser_inlet - 6 Jul 2010 01:14
Nice pub just on the outskirts of the city centre, and home to the Crown Brewery which I believe brews its beers below the premises -
Can be a little devoid of atmosphere when not full, although this seems to be down to the slighly characterless interoir - The bar staff are friendly however and the range of real ales, both home brewed and guests is good. - On my visit there were three from the home brewery, as well as three guests.
Worth a visit if in the area.
SouthYorkshireman - 6 Jun 2010 23:36
There can't be many pubs where, on a Sunday night, the conservatory is slowly colonised by 30+ folk musicians (including a harpist, numerous fiddles, concertinas etc). It's not always like this mind. What is consistent is the beer: always a good selection, including the decent Crown beers brewed on the premises. I had one featuring a badger on the pump sign. I can't remember the name it was that good. The food is good value. Better for carnivores though (the veggie burgers are a bit disappointing). But that's am minor grumble. Great bar staff, friendly locals, eccentric music.
Stein - 17 May 2010 18:50
Great pub. Great food. The Crown Brewery Hillsborough Pale Ale and Stannington Stout were exceptional brews. The Samuel Berry's OK but a little hazy. Easy to reach by tram. View from the beer garden spoilt somewhat by the pile of used tyres in the backyard of next door's motorcycle shop.
Slake - 4 Mar 2010 19:49
Slightly out-of-town from other pubs on a Sheffield crawl but easy enough to get to by public transport and handy (of course) for the Wednesday ground. Spacious, above its own brewery and good for beer, chat and even accommodation. Hop on a tram and go there
Arctium_lappa - 10 Jan 2010 18:05
Starting to slow down a bit as this was 8th pub of the day, but we enjoyed Bazens Octobeer here. Plenty of Crown beers on the bar, and clips on the wall showed the beers available from the cellar as well as the guests on the bar. Always good ale. We have eaten here when we have started the trail at this end of the tram route and the food is good and reasonably priced.
gillhalfpint - 18 Oct 2009 11:45
Pretty pricy at 60quid a night for a twin room, but breakfast and Crown Ales (brewed in the cellar) are good. Very nice place otherwise.
swcooper - 13 Aug 2009 10:58
There aren't many small hotels like this in the big cities. This is a cracker - good beers, lively atmosphere, decent bed and breakfast and a really good location for exploring central Sheffield - highly recommended.
mtaylor40 - 9 Aug 2009 21:28
Beers from the Crown Brewery (located downstairs) were Hillsborough Pale Ale & Traditional Bitter (both 2), & Stannington Stout, also Spire Sgt Pepper Stout (5.5%abv, laced with black pepper), Empire Brewing Commerci-Ale Traveller (clip has pic of Mini-Traveller), Ossett Yorkshire Glory, Abbeydale Absolution, Great Newsome Frothingham Best, plus, coming next (but available direct from the cellar NOW), Hop Ripper IPA, Ossett Light Ale, Great Newsome Jems Stout, Bridestones Pennine Gold, Abbeydale Belfry. The small bar to right of entrance suggests it used to be the hotel reception and the office behind is now the kitchen. Wood floor continues to lounge area on the left, where mixed seating is reminiscent of a budget hotel but the warm welcome & beer line-up puts this in a different league. Beyond the bar & lounge area is a nice conservatory with bleached pine tables & a couple of Raj style rattan chairs, as well as smaller tables & stools, there is a cobbled balcony surround with picnic sets, and a board listing belgian style bottles. Mon: pie chips peas & pint 5; Wed: curry rice & pint 5; pie of day wi chips & mushy peas 4.95; chunky chips wi cheese 2.50. Tues is big Jims quiz night, 8pint prize. Six en-suite rooms, 3dbls, 3twins, 60 b&b, or 40 single. Ill be booking in advance when I get the chance to tour Sheff properly, and its right by Langsett tram stop. As JB points out, you can see the former name Wellington in stone over the door, and this and the Wellington down the hill (Henry St) were, or are, known as the Top Wellie & Bottom Wellie. Great stuff.
trainman - 31 Jul 2009 13:32
Agree generally with the comment below. For real ale fans this is a must, as the amount of microbrewed beers available means that the pub can proudly take its place in the Don Valley 'ale trail'- indeed, many may wish to start here, by taking the tram to Langsett Road station, practically outside the pub. However, it does lack atmosphere- it is bare boards and there seems to be very little to look at while you sup your pint, apart from the Sky Sports News screen. This may well be different in summer with the conservatory at the rear- I visited when it was cold and dark and this added to the feeling of starkness. Pub architecture fans will prefer the less well-known Ship down the road, but for the man (or woman) who loves his (her) beer this is a gem.
Carlurmston - 22 Apr 2009 13:37
Single bar pub serving beers from the on site Crown Brewery plus guests which, on my recent visit, included Acorn and Salamander.

Unless I'm misinformed the Crown Brewery beers are only available at the pub itself.

4 Crown beers in total were available - both the Hillsborough Pale Ale and Traditional Bitter at 1.90p and 2.00p respectively being pleasantly tasty pints.

It's a former Gilmours Windsor Ales pub called The Wellington as evidenced by the etched windows and signage over the door.

There's a conservatory at the back and a few seats outside which afford a fine view of part of the Don Valley, although there's a rather unsightly Mecca Bingo Hall about the size of an aircraft hangar to contend with.

I'm disappointed to have to report that the interior of the HH is a rather characterless bare boards and wooden chairs affair with no real cosiness or pubby feel to it. Some old photographs/brewery posters/mirrors would certainly improve the atmosphere which, to me, felt a bit like sitting in a railway station waiting room.

Despite the existence of an on site brewery and the availability of guest beers, I'm not as keen on this place as some of the other pubs round here, although I would still probably recommend a visit.

Finally, note that, despite the name, the pub is not particularly close to the football ground, which is a couple of stops away on the tram
JohnBonser - 8 Apr 2009 13:46
Top-of-the-range place - excellent beer (with their own ales brewed in the cellar under the Crown Brewery name, plus guests), food at very reasonable prices and value-for-money accommodation. Particularly liked - well, everything - but would particularly mention their Wood Street Porter.
rpadam - 28 Feb 2009 14:39
Cant get enough of The Hillsborough Hotel. The beers brewed in the brewery are so good. Heard that their Traditional bitter won gold at Rotherham beer festival last week. Its a must for any beer or food lover!
kat2009 - 26 Feb 2009 15:52
Late review from October when we visited Sheffield to do the Pub-Tic-Tram-Sport beer festival that we thoroughly enjoyed. This was the first of the 3 participants we visited, and we had 6 great beers from their list. Always a must to visit whenever we come to Sheffield for good beer quality and great food too all at reasonable prices.
gillhalfpint - 17 Jan 2009 11:48
This was the first of five visits to good beer guide pubs in the area and just like the other four it certainly did not disappoint. We quaffed a perfect pint of crown "traditional" brewed on the site and sat in the extension out the back lookin at the great views, 8/10
fat_beer_badger - 28 Nov 2008 18:37
This an excellent pub. Well worth the short tram trip out from the Centre. The ever changing guest beers sit nicely next to the excellent home produced ales. Food is excellent value as well.

Coming from the South East I appreciate the pricing policy. Not many places left where you can get a pint for under 2.
alexw123 - 29 Sep 2008 11:03
Certainly the kind of place I would like to stay.
The home brews are fantastic. I had the well-hopped "Hillsborough Pale Ale" and the "Traditional Bitter". The "Stannington Stout" is an award winner. All beers, especially the home brews, are cheap, even for Sheffield. Kid on the bar asked if I wanted my Salamander Shogun Stout topped up, and for once I was in a position to say no, that the head was the perfect size.
Website and chalk board update to show what ales are on each day.
Lovely view of the hills from the rear.

Nothing but praise.
Dimple_mug - 17 Sep 2008 17:52
Been in here a couple of times and the range of drinks on offer is impressive, aleheads will really enjoy this place.
ChrisP87 - 19 Jun 2008 15:13
excellent pub, superb ales....visit here when Sheffield Folk Festival is on, so good music too.
alehouses - 5 Mar 2008 11:58
Ended my Sheffield crawl here for the first time in over 4 years last Saturday night. Absolutely superb beers available, and the Crown ales are absolutely BURSTING with flavour.HPA was exquisite.

Friendly locals, too, namely Nick and Ashley - nice of them to invite me onto their table. This is a great pub to finish a crawl given its late licence to 12 midnight on weekends, and it should be included on any Sheffield crawl.

Classic!
lad_newton - 26 Feb 2008 18:56
Another great visit to the Hillsborough, and I was tempted by the liver and bacon at 4. Excellent value. Enjoyed the Church End and Bridgnorth beers with my meal.

Very good pub/hotel from our visit to Sheffield yesterday for the football. We were here for our visit to the nearby blue part of Sheffield (CUFC). Some of our friends were going to be staying here overnight in the hotel. We met up with other parts of our real ale touring party during the afternoon.
8 Hand pumped ales were available during our visit covering most of the different beer styles. A number of their own Crown brewery ales were available. Crown Brewery is based in the cellar of the hotel. The pub was very fiendly both from staff and other customers. When I enquired about which ales were dark I was given two tasters before I could stop her. This was an example of how they obviously try and make all their customers go away happy with their choices.
Love_good_ale - 2 Dec 2007 21:41
Real ale heaven - I stayed here on 4 August and was bowled over by the friendly staff and relaxing ambience - not to mention the excellent ales. The bar is spacious with scrubbed foorboards and well upholstered seats round the walls. Bedrooms were clean and simply furnished.

I will be back again soon!
dozysharp - 15 Aug 2007 09:54
Called while in the area and the three beers I chose were in excellent condition as usual. There is a lovely conservatory area at the back with outside seating round it for smokers.
gillhalfpint - 19 Jul 2007 12:49
Another on my North Sheffield crawl- Why aren't all hotels this good?
Pathetester - 30 Mar 2007 10:03
This is one I have added to my Sheffield crawls as it has got better and I now enjoy the food as well as the beers. Good choice in good condition.
gillhalfpint - 3 Dec 2006 23:53
Good choice of real ales and friendly service in a pleasant atmosphere. Would highly recommend it.
Beerybloke - 23 Apr 2006 17:17
Sorry guys but while the range of beers is still good, it's nothing like the "Del Days".
Bram - 29 Jun 2004 16:52
Get there soon - under new management from March
DDofMedway - 28 Jan 2004 13:58
Hear Hear - re Simon's comments - couldn't have put it better myself! GO there!
lad_newton - 12 Jun 2003 17:46
A hotel bar that is only open to the public from 4.30 Thursday to Sunday incl. Saying that, the pub still manages to sell about 15 different real ales per week - about 40 pints per hour. A real ale mecca - one of many in this area. Various drinking areas and either hot food or filled rolls available at all times. Have not road tested the accommodation but have had good reports. On site Crown micro brewery too - try the Pale Ale and the Stannington Stout - vastly better than Guiness.
