One of if not the best pub in Devon.

Fantastic olde worlde cosy place with massive fireplace and many a local character dotted about the place.

The food is also magnificent as so is the ale.

The pub in it''s quiet location is a humbling reminder of what life was once like in the countryside of Britain.

Very hard to get to by public transport but a walk is all part of the fun.

10/10

Good beer, usually 3 on. Food excellent and the pub itself is superb and in a quiet area, love it. Accomodation upstairs needs to be modernised, clean and functional, needs updating, especially the bathroom.

Don't go to this pub! It's mine all mine and I don't want everyone in the World to go there and spoil it! It is the best pub in England but there is a terrible dragon that lives in the village and eats strangers!

Can only agree with everything that's been said about this absolute gem of a pub. Went yesterday for the first time after a walk in the local area and was met with the friendliest welcome from staff and locals that we've ever experienced anywhere in the country. The barmaid immedietely asked for our first names and used them all through our visit and meal. The cask ale and food was suberbly presented and served and was excellent value. Only downside......not enough time to spend there as we live an hour's drive away!! This will become a regular with us.

There are not many reviews of this pub but thats not to say that it isn't very good, what it means is that most people can't think of anything else better to put on here that what others have said before!

However this is probably one of the top 3 pubs in Devon, of course that is only in my opinion! I have been visiting this pub from Plymouth for the last 8 years i guess and this is a true gem, it nestles in a sleepy village that wouldn't look out of sorts on a chocolate box, the pub it's self is a fascinating building and dates from the 15th century. It is an old Devon cob and thatch building and it oozes character! Jamie Stuart and Pipp Hutchinson used to own the Double Locks in Exeter and then the Kings Arms in Winkleigh, at the time of running the Kings Arms he also ran the Duke along with a farm, however nowadays he is doing well with just the Duke and the farm, tiring stuff i'd imagine!

The Duke is one of those pubs that doesn't change, but this is a good thing, when you walk in it is one of those pubs that no one looks you up and down, it doesn't matter if you are wearing a suit or a dress or wellie boots with a gun over your shoulder or even if you have your dog with you, this pub is just fantastic, the food is good and of a high standard, the real ale is 2nd to none being served directly from the cask, Cotleigh Tawny and Adnams Broadside as regular and up to 2 guest ales and the rooms are comfy but quirky. In winter the pub is warmed by a huge open fire place, if you're there early it is worth getting the rocking chairs by the fire. This place, although in the middle of no where can get busy and it is worth phoning in advance if you are to book for a meal.

Even with all the pubs closing all of the Country, i think this is one that will always survive, long may it continue.

What a Pub! If you understand what a british country pub is all about then this will not disappoint. Locals, visitors, walkers, wellies, dogs, log fire, beer and food!

Good beer from the cask; a barman who knows what he is talking about and treats everyone the same; efficient, polite and unobtrusive but attentive staff; friendly locals; properly priced top quality food but not overly fussy - restaurant/gastropub standard without the price tag. (That was the bar food, I expect the seperate dining room wouldn't disappoint either - it looked nicely laid out). They must of changed the menu since Gudgeons report because it certainly wasn't 70's, more pub modern with some local specialities and traditional favorites.

It is a popular place. Get there early for a table even early/mid week on a late Octobers evening.

Pub decked out with photos of past events etc. Cartoons of the pub and other bits 'n' bobs that get donated/left behind through years of life. Only thing missing was a pub cat in front of the fire or tucked away on a bench somewhere (can't give it 10/10 now!).

If you have read Ian Marchants 'The Longest Crawl' you will agree the owner should be made Minister for Pubs.

If your are looking for a English village pub, this will be on your list.
Beer at it's best, the down side is it is at times very busy this may have something to do with the beer.

Don't just visit in the summer in the winter you will see a log fire that you will want to go back and have a second look to make sure you saw wright the first time.

This has got to be THE quintissential English village pub. Situated in the village square next to the church, a thatched roof, original beams, roaring log fire (in the winter), great atmosphere, an extensive menu and superb food. Add to that a good range of ales straight from the cask, and friendly staff. The only downside is that this is a small pub which is very popular with the locals and it can get pretty busy so seating is at a premium. Food is served right through from noon til 9-10pm, so best visit early evening to guarantee a seat.

Cob and thatch country village pub with regular following of predominately older crowd. Reasonable range of beers that includes Adnams Broadside, Cotleigh Tawny, and Sharps Doom Bar, all tapped from the cask. Large range of 1970s pub food.
