user reviews of Flan O'Briens, Bath

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A prominent pub built of Bath stone and occupying a large corner plot just opposite the Theatre Royal, it doesn’t have quite as much of an “in your face” Irish theme as you might infer from the name, and as far as I could make out the only items representing the Emerald Isle were a few small flags and some Guinness ice buckets.

Inside it’s all one large, open room with very high ceilings and large windows on two sides giving a light and airy feel. The flooring is dark black boards whilst the paintwork is mostly a pale khaki green with dark brown paint on the timberwork. There are a few old black and white photos on the wall and a small fish tank behind the bar, but other than that there was little of any note. A large projector screen was showing the rugby as well as a plasma screen elsewhere and the volume was somewhat too loud making it difficult to escape from the commentary if you weren’t interested in it.

Beers on tap were Doom Bar and Butcombe, whilst the solitary cider was Thatcher’s Gold. Overall, this isn’t a bad pub, but it’s not especially great either. At least it’s not been gastrocised or otherwise tarted up, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of atmosphere and the beer choice is somewhat uninspiring.

Was passing through Bath on Friday 17th Dec on my way to Trowbridge and decided to check out a couple of pubs in the city where I lived for 8 years.

For some reason I stumbled upon this place first and only went in because it was empty, which at 5pm on a Friday is worrying!.

It always used to be very busy in here most evenings when I lived in Bath so I was shocked to find only a handful of other punters here. The interior has been given a lick of paint and the high tables replaced with barrels on which to place your drinks, so now it resembles an O'Neills Irish bar more than it did in the past!

Only one person serving behind the bar who I assume is the new manager/owner. It used to be run by an Irish guy who wore glasses and who also owned the Green park Tavern on Lower Bristol Road. (Is he still about?)

Anyway, I paid 3.00 for a pint of Abbey Ales Bellringer. Okay, I know this is an Irish pub in Bath, but come on - Bellringer is brewed less than a mile up the road so why the need to charge that much I don't know.

I'd hate to think how much of Guinness or lager costs here!!

Went to a few pubs when i visited Bath recently, this one was my favourite - very good location and they have a decent selection- If i lived in Bath this'd be my local

Great pub. Bit pricey but that keeps all the hobos out. Always a good atmosphere, and a superb pint of Guinness. Closest thing to an Irish Pub outside the Emerald Isle.

The only thing irish about this place is the name- not particularly nice like many pubs in Bath.

Okay its a bit on the pricey side but it has always been good in there and I find it doesn't try and throw the whole Paddy theme on you which is nice. Watched many a game of footie and rugby in there and always enjoyed it.

If you drink Guiness and the other Euro piss then it is expensive! But I think it's 2.60 or 2.70 for a pint of Abbey Ales Bellringer whicj is why I think it's a great pub! And they show football on Sky!

Third rate plastic paddy theme pub.

As other's have mentioned, this is one of the most expensive pubs in Bath. It is pleasant with a reasonable pint of Guinness, tho not much choice of beer.

Ok it's a bit on the pricey side but it's the best Irish theme bar I've been in. And when the telly's off you can always watch the fish.

I am either getting paid to much or was too stupid to notice the prices but with live football all day a good sized pub and quick, good service i'm not complaining.

It is a decent enough pub but it is also very, very expensive - even for Bath. And the beer isn't very varied or really that well looked after.

Great pub, friendly bar staff, great location. But why so expensive?? Was in there a couple of weeks ago. (Not my choice!) I've been to Irish bars in Oslo, Copenhagen, London, Budapest etc, and they ALL "up" the price of a pint by 30 or 40 pence!! Apart from Flanaggans Apple on Mathew Street in Liverpool - now that's how you should run a Irish pub and not rip people off!!!

What a great traditional Irish bar. The management is friendly and the beer is reasonable. Hard to find a decent pub like this in a city centre and you have 2 in the same street. If you fancy a change of scenery you can alternate from your Traditional Irish bar to your Traditional English bar by walking 20 metres up the road and into the Grapes!! Great Location and great pub!

The best 'Irish' pub in Bath! Well i suppose it only has O'Neils for company just up the road, but its nicely decorated and in a good location between the second shopping street. Occasionally has live music in the evenings and a good atmosphere when full (thus better than most places in the centre of town) so worth checking out.

Fantastic atmosphere, VERY friendly and knowledgable staff. I had a great night and will definitely be back.

Been going in here loads recently - totally agree with ericmarco - landlord is a quality bloke. Always happy to help out.

The place also has wicked music. Very rare to get the Jam, the Clash and the Pistols played in a pub, rather than a club, on a Saturday night. And with a late licence as well Wednesday to Saturday, you can't go far wrong.

Popped in for a quick pint-whilst nothing special the manager was a real gent. He went out of his way to help, recommending somewhere to eat and phoning ahead to see what time they stopped serving. All of this wasdone without me having to ask, take note that it was a landlord/mananger should be like.

A fair "Irish" pub. Guinness isn't bad, but not Excellent.

Excellent guiness- a good "character" pub in the city centre

Is a reasonable Irish bar, but you won't find any pub in Ireland anything like it.
TheGP - 10 Aug 2004 15:10
Nice Guinness. Typical Irish themed pub. Best thing to do in this pub is to sit at the bar on a high stool and watch people go by.
Mark - 4 Mar 2004 16:08
Good Guinness and for watching sport. Some odd customers, mind.
mdma - 31 Jan 2004 12:13
The real pub left in the city centre
