please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited in February 2017. Approx 8 hand pumps at the bar including at least one cider. I had a pint of McConnell's by Thornbridge which is a 5% stout and set me back £3. A crowd of workmen types were round the bar. Very traditional and old school looking inside. Bare board floors and banquette seating with some pews and mix of tables and wooden chairs. Main bar seems to be split into two sections and there is a further back room. I also noted a wood burning stove.

I love The Rising Sun. The views of the valley are beautiful, the selection and variation of Real Ale is exceptional, always well kept and served with a smile by the (more often than not) friendly and informed bar staff.
Sadly, on my last two visits I've felt uncomfortable about the extra curricular activities quite openly happening in and around the premises. I'm an open minded man with a "Do whatever you want" attitude to others and life, however, I'm not sure the smells of the "specialist tobacco" quite fitted with the families bringing their children in for a Sunday afternoon (wonderful, by the way) pizza. I'm a smoker and it was even happening in the covered smoking area to the rear.
I believe the landlord is a popular chap and has always been amiable on my visits, as has his wife (who makes the stunning pizzas) they keep a wonderfully clean and inviting local. I just hope for the old fuddy-duddies like me, this doesnt and hasn't become the norm.
I will be back for the views and the beers, but I won't be rushing.

Can't believe it! I've only just read the former reviews and discovered others have experienced similar problems. So I'm not being paranoid, phew! If the landlord and landlady ever read this, it might help for them to know because otherwise, you have a wonderful pub and have done a fabulous job since taking it on. I also enjoy the Railway, my friends are locals and would even consider myself a local.

I loved this pub until recently. It has a fantastic range of really good beers including two from Millstone. They also have folk nights and various other things on and I've enjoyed many a night there. However my last two visits have really put me off. The time before last, the barmaid served me a pint which I relaxed at the bar with. There was a man in the corner of the bar who the barmaid was obviously well acquainted with. It wasn't a particularly busy night but when I'd finished my drink and wanted another, the barmaid ignored me, served others and whispered things to her friend at the bar who gave continuous shifty looks at me. I wondered if it was me being paranoid and thought perhaps she hadn't realised I was waiting to be served but after virtually shouting for attention, I realised she was ignoring me. I had no alternative but to leave. As the pub is on my travels, after a couple of weeks of contemplation, I came to the decision that perhaps I had been paranoid and that the barmaid and man at the bar who I had never met couldn't possibly be behaving to me like that so I went in again (hoping that there would be someone different behind the bar). However, unfortunately she was there again and the man at the bar behaving in exactly the same way to me except no pint at all this time! Don't think I'll be going in again.

This pub has loads going for it, cracking range of well kept ales and good pizzas. Its also far enough away from the village centre to keep most of the idiots away. It falls down with the music which is often turned up to stupid volumes-so you can't have a conversation. This is even worse when the young bar staffs boyfriends come in and the place turns into a youth club. Shame as it spoils the place.

Like belle vue ace said a great pub with a great range of real ale 2 open fires and knowledgeable staff. I can see where Mr ace is coming from when he talks about the staff thou as I feel it seems to have that feel of a locals local. I never had any problems getting served as we were one of the first in the pub. I want to go back at night and try the homemade pizzas but be warned they only sell them Thursday-Sunday from 4pm. A good walk from train station but well worth it.

Good pub, good selection of well kept beer BUT... just called in and it was pretty busy the young girl behind the bar was serving and i walked up to the bar right in front of her, so she definately saw me, she completed serving her order and then served the other person who was in front of me, a couple then just walked in and she went straight to them and to another couple of locals who were behind me, as good a pub as it is this girl wants to learn to serve in order instead of local faces first, hate this when you come across it in a pub, a negative aspect for me.

The pub has definitely become a fixture for real ale in the Tame Valley. Beer always well kept and sensibly priced with a good selection available.

Very impressed. Visited about 6pm on a friday night and it was BUZZING. Great mix of folk and I loved my Tiger Rut pint from local Millstone Brewery. Everyone speaks highly of this place and now I know why. Proper success story for Richard! Loads of real ales and also plenty of wine. Wish it was nearer the train station (it's 1.1 miles from Greenfield)...

Great pub. Excellent refurb without ruining the ambience. Fantastic range of real ales. No food-pity. Very friendly owner. Bar staff gorgeous, owner ugly.

Yes, this is a lot better.
Went a few years ago, not impressed. Now got new owners and 10 handpumps, most of which appear to be guests. We had 3 - all in top condition.
The pub's clean and modern with out being poncey, the back room's a bit spartan though. Saturday night in January and packed - what does that tell you?
Aparrently the refurb was supposed to be a "lick of paint and in job", but actually cost a fortune...
Bit understaffed maybe when we visited, perhaps they had a rush on.
Anyway, well worth a visit.

Well what can one say about the Rising Sun,being my local for many a year(apart from the wilderness years it had under the previous owners, clueless comes to mind)its so nice to see it refurbished and back to its old self, with all the old regulars coming back in and with a tremendous choice of real ales from the big breweries and not forgetting local breweries to, and also the wonderful warm welcome you get from Richard&Charlotte(Landlord&Landlady). Who need pictures on the wall when you've got fine ale and conversation to be getting on with. Look forward to seeing it installed back in the GBG where it rightly belongs. Well done and keep up the good work.

Called in last night to see how the new pub looked. Had a very well kept pint of Tiger Rut. Considering the pub has been open for 2 weeks I couldn't believe how half finished the pub is, especially the toilets. It looks like whoever started the refurb got bored just as it was reaching completion. Unfinished painting, no locks on the toilet door (the toilet was clean though), bare walls in the bar area. Hopefully this will all be put right in near future because if not I fear people won't come back. If that happened it would be a shame because with all its features, log fires etc, it has the making of a great pub.

The Rising Sun re-opened Friday 15th Oct having been totally refurbished. The new owners have done a great job. On the bar is a straight row of ten handpumps. On the opening night three of these were selling a range of beers from the local Mossley brewery Millstone. Beer quality excellent and at prices lower than surrounding pubs. In addition to the exisiting wood burning stove they have opened up two previously unused chimneys and these now have open grates. The floor has been replaced and a new bar installed. The toilets have been renovated and are now clean & tidy. Looks set to be an excellent drinking house. Good Luck to the new owners. Make the effort to visit if you're nearby.

Quite rightly removed from the Good Beer Guide and currently closed for refurbishment by the new owners. New owners used to looking after busy local GBG pubs for their parents! This looks set to become the best pub in Mossley - watch this space.

Just popped in here as i was passing, the pub smells damp and musty and i was served the worst pint of tiger rut ive ever tasted. A really good beer when on song, surely not to be included in next years beer guide? A thumbs down.

Our favourite pub; lovely owners who keep the good range of ales well in warm surroundings. Perfect to have a pint of local brew whilst looking out over the valley. I only wish they opened a little earlier than 5:30 in the week.
