user reviews of the Big Angel, Whitby

Not much character, a bit like a works canteen. I prefer the Wetherspoons conversions of banks and cinemas. That said, comfortable & cheap.

WETHERSPOONS reopened a derelict eyesore in Whitby a good selection of real ales and the usual decent quality food what's not to like

A souless wetherspoons that looks more like a posh fish and chip restaurant. Beer is good tho.

As others have said, now The Angel, a JD Wetherspoon pub.

First impressions - a smart looking pub, though unnervingly quiet downstairs considering the number of people in. Seemed a bit soulless. There is a second bar upstairs with more seating and the same ales are available on both bars.

I spotted Greene King IPA, Doom Bar, Columbian Creek (Osset Brewery) 3.8% and Jorvik Blonde 3.8%. Two local Whitby ales were "coming soon" - a shame, as I would have liked to have sampled them.

I went for the Columbian Creek at £2.65 for the pint - expensive for a Spoons but still on the cheap side. A pleasant pint. Service downstairs seemed very slow so I tried the upstairs bar which was running a bit better at the time of my visit.

Now a spacious Wetherspoon. Sells Westons Old Rosie cider.
A reliable source of reasonably-priced evening meals in a town where most of the cafes close by 7:30pm.

This pub is now a wetherspoons outlet and lodge. A big refurb has been done and is now the smartest pub in Whitby, no yobbos in like it used to be. Beers are expensive for a spoons. £2-89 for real ales and Carling £3-09, well what do you expect its rip off Whitby. Staff didnt seem very obliging. There are 2 bars upstairs and down, we found it better upstairs, you get away from the buggy brigade
Worth a visit the views accros the harbour are great, nice front patio area as well

This pub is still closed, but good news! It has been bought by Wetherspoons. Work starts early 2012. So it may shake some of the ripoff pubs in Whitby, when it opens, and may give locals a place to be proud of and reasonable prices. Something which is sadly lacking here.

this shitehole is now boarded up. its about time too it attracted all the low life and cretins from teeside. i must say though the premises are in a great location and it would be a shame if it was not kept as a pub

This pub is now closed and boarded up on 7th january 2011. Apparently been bought by a pub chain, I wonder which one?

Dont bring manchester into it a place like this wouldnt last 2 mins round here.

Ha! This is an absolute dive, run by people who obviously don't care about customers. The toilets stink and the whole atmosphere is unwelcoming. There are many better places to have a drink. I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than go to the "Big A"

Got to agree, this is an awful pub.

A refurbish a few years ago has actually made the interior much worse, very bland. Awful sound system and the world's smallest dancefloor. Beer is the worst in Whitby, often the bottled drinks are served warm. Could it possibly be the worst pub in Whitby ? It belongs on a council estate in Manchester, not in a prime location in Whitby.
