They've just applied for a licence to have naked pole dancers, apparently. Classy joint.

This pub is great if you are part of the great irish diaspora. If you have the temerity to be English you are as welcome as a rash.
Incidentally, Cat is part of the occassionally resident band and a very fine singer who graces The Chevy and The Cart and Horses (sorry Cat, you've been rumbled!)

The area seems to have improved just recently, so maybe I'll give this place another try.

You're right is does sound like an advert - that wasn't really my intention. I think most people will agree that when you have been a patron of a pub for such a long time and seen the different landlords come and go and see how hard each one tries to make a go of things, you feel you need to put a good word in for your local and fight their corner if you like. The pub isn't as good as when Sean White had it, it's different to when Geoff had it and better than when Ted and Jenny had it. Everyone needs to be given a chance a making a go of a business and that's all the new governer is doing and I'm just backing his determination. It is also true that the area is a dive.

Hmm - funny. The post by 'anonymous' reads more like an advert than a review. How cynical of me. Part of the pub's problem is the area it's in - that stretch of road outside Maryland station is a hellhole and an absolute magnet for the dregs of humanity.

This pub is one of east london's greatest little hidden treasures. Traditionally an irish bar the Manager ensures equal hospitality and entertainment to everyone - regulars who have been frequenting this pub for many, many years, students and teachers from the local Uni and a new young crowd on disco night. It's true to say, this pub has been 'stuck in a rut' for a few years, this mainly due to previous owners who would not 'allow' the management to make the most of the place. In this past few months, the previous Manager has now become the owner, new bar staff have been employed the garden is being refurbished, new t.v's have been installed, live music is booked for every weekend and a disco karaoke every wednesday. What more can be done and it's only a tiny bar. The Manager will try to cater for your needs playing in his own Irish band (Ard Ri)at the Chevy on a regular basis. Overall, whether you're looking for traditional Irish Craic, a sing song or just few quiet pints whilst watching the footie - you will enjoy a great night at the Chevy.

This place is one tip! Just off the tube from work and thought i have a quiet couple and red the Standard. I got served eventually and sat down to open my paper and starting reading, treid to turn back to the front page and it had stuck solid to the table ! Had to peel it off ! So I asked the staff behind the bar could they possible wipe the table well........ the looks I got ! I dont know maybe it's me but was this too much to ask ? I was told that they would try to clean it in a minute ( obviously because they were so busy because there was 4 other people in the pub !)
Well I moved table to a less dirty one, had aother drink and left, and the table still wasnt cleaned. Mind you the bar maid was busy talking all time !

I agree with M Strutter, great pub when Jeff was their but boy how things have changed for the WORSE! Went in there before xmas and the bar staff was down the end of the bar smoking a cigarette talking to some women and ignored me. While waiting anothet customer came in waited...& waited.... and left, then I followed. As I pushed the door open I was asked by the barmaid "can I help you?" I replied "Yes, 10mins ago" and off I went across the road to the Cart & Horses which i will review at a later date cos I still find the experience there rather emotional but one day i will pluck up the courage to tell you all about it....I hope.
